My husband and I had a blast here!!

After a brief walk thru of  the old chinese museum and the old chinese boarding school we headed over to Al the Wop's - its in its 73rd ( i believe ) year of operation.

We sat at the bar and ordered our drinks and our food.  My husband got the steak sandwich - but its just this huge steak served on a plate by itself!  Then they include these thick individual pieces of texas toast - you can add marmalade and peanut butter to them - I guess that is the "popular"  or "local" way of doing it.

I had a cheeseburger that was served on the same bread.  It was jam'n!

I thought our lunch was pretty good, my hubbie's steak was a little tough in places but I think that is because it was so damn big?!

The drinks are good and to the stocky white boy that bought us a round when you asked if we had a cigarette and I said "i don't smoke , but i'm sure my husband will give you one"  (even tho it was his last one)  my 4th star goes to you!

There are some darling little shops/galleries in this old town of Locke that you must walk down wooden sidewalks to get to.

The people were all very friendly and if I lived closer i'd be a regular!

There are hundreds upon hundreds of 1.00 bills stuck in the ceiling - i asked how they got them up that high since the ceiling is 15 feet high and I was told a 'good aim and a poker chip" - I told the bartender I needed a poker chip cuz i wanted to do it but that never happened.

Doesn't matter - we had a blast all the same and I left one dollar richer!

Al the Wop's... now called Al's Place, to be politically correct.
Kinda like saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas!!  :(

Lots of history and character....yeah, it is a dive, but that's what
makes it so cool.

Great steaks..served with salad and cheese bread.
(Tip:  go during lunch time.. the same steak is
like $5 cheaper!)

Plain, good food!

Check out the dollar bills stuck to the ceiling....

And it is a great summer outing driving along the river.

When I was a little kid, I got in trouble because of this place. "How is saying Wop a bad thing, when the restaurant is so awesome?" Little, naive Ken wasn't aware of race-relations or dirty words: all he knew about was the delicious steaks, a whacky bar, and a creepy ghost town on the San Joaquin Delta.

Al the Wop's is (by Californian standards) an ancient establishment.  The bar/steakhouse was started by an Italian man in the middle of a Chinese-American hamlet, buried deep in The Delta. The original owner is long dead, but the business continues to operate just as it did ages ago. The interior looks like it was cobbled together out of spare parts and I suspect is sorely in need of a seismic retrofit. The walls are all splattered with relics from the bar's history and an amusing assortment of taxidermy. If you look real carefully, you might spot some dollar bills stuck to the ceiling that date back to before there was a Federal Reserve. The dinning room is a makeshift cavern with some rugged benches from your grandparents' high school cafeteria.

Just as it looks like time left this restaurant behind, the food too is from another era: simple meals, large servings, and cheap prices.  The real draw for my family has always been the biggest, juiciest, and best cooked steaks in the area.  For us, it was the next best thing to being in the Midwest.  We learned long ago to worship my mother's eye for steaks, and this was her favorite place to go.

These days, prices have gone up and the quality has taken a small hit from management shifting over the years.  But snaking along a narrow, scenic, levee road to eat at Al the Wop's on a hot summer's night continues to be a priceless experience - an experience that continues to help define the natural majesty of the central valley.

I love this place! I had a cheeseburger and I'll say it was excellent. The meat was fresh and certainly not frozen. It was cooked perfectly and you can tell the griddle has been "seasoned" well over the years. It's always a huge plus when you're getting your burger from a griddle that's been in operation for over 30 years. The tomatoes, lettuce and onions were all fresh and just the right amount. The "bun", more of a buttered toast on the griddle, was wonderful.

The fries were fantastic too. Nice thickness and cooked just right, crispy outside but still soft inside. I didn't try the steak but it was heavily recommended by several people. Another diner down the bar from me ordered one and it was huge.

You've got to try the peanut butter & marmalade on toast. It's worth driving there solely for that. They griddle the toast same as the burger. It comes nice and hot, slather it with the PB & marmalade and it melts in your mouth. You'd think you'd had enough PB & J sandwiches before in your life but until you've had this, you'd be wrong.

I have photos and a more in depth review on my personal blog.

Went here this weekend after doing a little wine tasting at some of the wonderful wineries that are nearby. We had had our fill of alcohol and so we came here strictly for FOOD. I'd love to come back someday and knock back a few drinks, though.

The dining area is quite possibly the diviest I've ever seen (this is a good thing!) second to Poor Red's in Placerville. I immediately felt like a little kid eating at my Grandparent's house.  Every table was stocked with condiments that included, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, A-1, salt & pepper, toothpicks, Jiff creamy peanut butter and some kind or marmalade...yes, I said JIFF peanut butter. How awesome is that?!?

The menu isn't large and doesn't need to be. I had the fried prawns & fries, my boyfriend had the burger and his Mom had a grilled cheese sandwich. All of our meals came with a salad with thousand island dressing and some grilled bread. The burger was quite good! The meat was perfect and they serve it on grilled sourdough bread (the same you get with the meal). My prawns were basic and I regretted not accepting the chicken with mushrooms dish the waitress almost left at our table because it smelled really good. The grilled cheese looked perfect and simple as a grilled cheese should.

This was the perfect ending to a perfect outing and I shall be back.

As LEGIT as it gets.

Lovely Girlfriend and I came in here for One Drink and One Drink Only.  But the environment here grabbed us and we stayed for Three.

Or was it Four?

Coulda been Five.  I can't remember.  But we did give in and split a grilled cheese sando with some "Stinky Fries", which was awesome.

I don't get it.  Grilled Cheese should be the same, everywhere.  Right?  Not here.  The grilled cheese at Al's is miles ahead.  Put some Jif on it and you are WINNER.

I don't understand how they're getting 5 stars.  This place is a dive!  It was dirty, there were flies everywhere... and the food.  My husband and I both got the steak sandwich.  What?  How can you call something a sandwich and serve it on a plate by itself?  We left looking at each other, saying "Wow, that was weird"

I had never heard of this place, and would never find it I suppose if I tried while driving by. You walk through the bar to get to the restaurant towards the back. This place does have alot of character and history. I do like that. It was busy in fact. Seems alot of locals come here.

I had ordered the prawns, my date ordered the steak sandwich. He was really looking forward to a sandwich stacked high with all the fixins. He and I had no idea that he would get some Texas Toast style bread minus the cheese. The steak itself was presented just as that on a plate. There was peanut butter and marmalade on the table that you are supposed to spread on the toast and eat it with the meat that's on the side? I don't know....it was edible and pretty tasty I suppose from what I tasted, but people should be warned. No lettuce...no tomato...no nothin except fries. Hardly a sandwich?
I on the other hand did enjoy my prawns. They were good.
I suppose when you are on the back road and seeking something different to try it's a good place to stop, and check out. I wouldn't go out of my way. I don't see myself or my date to have a "craving" for steak with marmalade and peanut butter. Interesting!

Let's do the time warp again!  Sticky booths and table, dimly lit.  Get the steak sandwich, which is not a sandwich at all, but a giant slab of meat accompanied by grilled bread.  Get the fries specialty, which is doused in garlic and parmesan.  Greasy goodness.

Best place in the world to eat some mediocre meat, drink a Bud, get sexually harrassed by some bikers, and read some deep bathroom-door graffiti ("If you want it, you'll find a way; if you don't, you'll find an excuse") all before noon on a Sunday.

Sure beats church!

I've been coming here since I was 2 days old.  Seriously, my parents took me here on the way home from the hospital.

Al's place used to have the best bartender in the whole wide world.  His name was Chobby and he is one of my cherished childhood memories.  Now I don't know a soul in this place, but it doesn't stop me from going here to relive time of ole.

The food is mediocre now.  It used to be delicious.  I will still eat here, but I yearn for the times of the flat grilled steaks done to perfection.  Not to mention the old salad dressing.  I believe it was mayo, ketchup and relish.  Nothing like a simplistic mix of condiments to compliment your iceberg lettuce salad.

The atmosphere is still great and the drinks stiff!  Bring one of your schmuck friends to be the DD and you'll have a great time.  Make sure to check out the pictures on the wall and don't forget to have the tender of bar show you how to get your dollar stuck on the ceiling.

Why do I love going to Al's? It's not for the booze. It's not for the ambiance. It's for the steak.

The steak, you say? Well, let me tell you about the steak. The steak is grilled on a 30+ year-old grill, seasoned with decades of fresh beef. The beef itself is fresh, never-frozen, vacuum-sealed in its own blood, and not marinated in anything (to my knowledge) before getting slapped on that grill. Oh sweet god. The burgers are done on the same grill, from similarly prepared meat, and the excellence of the grill comes through there too.

Yeah, it's true, the salads are basic, the spaghetti nothing to write home about, and the fries are mostly eh. But I certainly don't go there for any of that (although I do enjoy the fried bread). I go there to enjoy a steak or burger made of meat that doesn't taste like dead cow, that's been grilled on a grill worthy of the title. The meat that comes off of that thing is, by and large, the best straight-up steak you will ever eat, outside of any steak you may cut straight off of a cow you raised by hand yourself from calfhood.

What I am saying is, this is a steak that doesn't need anything to be done to it in order for it to taste good. Sure, you can get a delicious filet or New York steak, all marinated in a red wine sauce, with all kinds of mango compotes or sauces or whatever, really anywhere else, but that is not the point at Al's. The point at Al's is to have a delicious steak in a REAL bar out in the nation's dang breadbasket. A delicious steak that reminds you why man decided to domesticate those dang cows in the first place.

(Note to poseurs: Unless you are an actual biker person, you will probably not want to wear your "biker" gear inside, unless you feel like looking like a twat is an integral part of your day. This is one place I would not dare wear my italian biker-style jacket because holy jeez I do not want to sully the biker ethos by being a poseur in that bar. They are real bikers there and it is their bar, not yours. This is an okay thing, too. Not that anything bad will happen, it's just common courtesy and also not wanting to look like an ass.)

Wow, craziness.....I need to get out more because I had no idea this place even existed.  They are hosting a chili cook off on June 6th. Dollars all over the ceiling??? & good drinks  The town of Locke is amazing. It is an in tact, Chinese town, virtually unchanged since the early 1900s.  Definitely going back.  Can't review the food this time, only stopped on a run and had some drinkys.

Always a fun place to stop by whether traveling by boat or by car.  It is located up Georgiana Slough after a short meandering cruise in the town of Lock (which is right next to Walnut Grove by car).  Once you stepped into (down) the darkened saloon, you can imagine yourself teleported back in time to what it must be like back during the gold rush days.

One of the first things you will notice is the hundreds of dollar bills all sooty and old up the ceiling with a few new bills scattered and if you ask the bartender who or how they got there, he will undoubtedly ask you for a dollar to show you how.  You hand him a dollar bill, he wraps it on his silver dollar coin with a thumb tack through your bill, and give it a quick toss to the ceiling.  Bingo!  Your dollar ends up sticking up the ceiling with the thumbtack but his dollar coin falls out of the fold and back into his hand.  You lose your dollar bill, but he still has his.  You feel like a chump for a second or two, but  it's a must see at least once if you are not local and you are cruising or driving in the neighborhood.  Or you can take my word for it and deny yourself the embarrassment of feeling like a chump.

The specialty of the house is spaghetti and steak.  I've always thought that was a strange combo, but it's actually fairly tasty or maybe I was just hungrier than I had realized.  But hey, you seriously didn't come here for the eats, do ya?

Aside from being a great biker stop on any delta-run you may be on, there's a couple of other reasons to stop. But before you do, you're going to need to do some reading. Go down to your local book store or book shop, and pick up a tome by H.P. Lovecraft: specifically any collection that contains the story 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth'. For the uninitiated, Lovecraft tends to be on the "wordy" side. But take your time reading the story. Take it all in.  Read it a couple of more times. Let the images spawned sink in. Let the world of Howard Phillip Lovecraft draw you in.

Once you've done this, take a trip to Locke. Notice the buildings. Take in the local businesses.

You'll suddenly understand why you should read the story before going there.

That said, Al the Wop's is a required stop, be it for a beer, or a burger topped with peanut butter (which actually tastes better than it sounds).

Keep in mind, this is a place to stop at. the last thing you want is a warm buzz before heading down a curvy levy road, so keep the intake under control.

O how I long for the days when I had nothing but free time to drive around in the delta.  So a fat girl, a Greek girl, and I walk into a bar...
No, that's not a joke, it's what really happened when I ate here.  My physically abundant yet extremely picky (WTF?) friend had a problem with most of the food, since there weren't really any choices for her and the waitress obviously wasn't all about "have it your way."

Hell, who am I kidding, the food is standard American crap, meat and pasta and a sandwich.  It's not that bad if that's what you're into.

But since this is the only restaurant in Locke, they don't really have to be good, do they?

I'm a sucker for character.  Like how freckles can make a face more beautiful or a scar on the chin can make a man more handsome; it's just how I see things.  Al's has scars and freckles.  Crooked floors, panties on the ceiling and bartenders who have probably seen (and done) everything; it's crooked and faltering and I wouldn't be surprised if the wood floor suddenly cracked open and swallowed someone.  I love it.  Its part of the soul of the Delta and what makes it feel like you've driven for a day instead of just 20 minutes down the 5.

The food is standard.  The steak sandwich isn't so much sandwich as a "make your own" with a steak and garlic bread.  It's all right, a local's tip is to always order the large because the cuts of steak for the small size aren't as good.  The burger is a burger.

The drinks, the bartenders, the town of Locke are the reason to visit this place...I've spent a lot of time drinking in the Delta and I highly recommend Al's as a place to start or even end the evening.

Disclaimer: The roads are way dangerous and unless you've got a place to stay down there make sure you've got a DD.

Finding Al the Wop's is no dumb trick.  Head out highway 12, and after you cross the Nth Bridge, take a right on an almost unmarked levee road.  Drive for about 15 minutes with pleasant views of farmland on one side and the river on the other, then turn off the levee onto a driveway-like exit that dumps you at the foot of downtown Locke.  The tricky part? Knowing where to turn off the levee.  I always recognize the turnoff by a huge brown boathouse that's right across the road. For some odd reason it's always reminded me of a grain storage facility.  The entry way makes a quick 90 degree-turn, and complete darkness yields to a dimly lit street lined with everything from dilapidated pickups to spanking new Mercedes.

Locke is a cool little town, even if it's all one street and barely 200 yards from start to finish.  Art galleries, a general store, and a preserved schoolhouse from the turn of last century are amongst the storefronts within a stones throw of Al's.

The entrance dumps you into a relatively unadorned bar with scads of dollar bills stuck on the ceiling.  There's a trick to getting them to stick.  Ask the bartender....he'll explain it to you.  The bar crowd varies....mostly boaters at night, and the Harley & Leather crowd during the day.  Don't sweat it....these aren't the kick-ass-and-bust-heads bikers....they're the "find a babysitter and dress up in our fun leather outfits" bikers.  Odd....but whatever gets you off I guess.  Like most places near the water, it jumps during the warm months.  Come the cold weather, the crowds of boater  thin out and the tule fog along the levees gets thicker than 90-Weight gear oil. Brave the winter fog, and you'll probably have the place to yourself.

The kitchen starts where the bar ends, and the entrance to the restaurant is a painfully plain doorway on your right.  Restaurant decor is a-la 7th grade cafeteria Masonite tables graced with equally spartan bench seating.  The menu is sparse, and it ain't for vegetarians.  Last time I was out there, it had two items: Large steak dinner and small steak dinner.  The steak is good but nothing to die for and the salad is marginal.  But dinner comes with (or at least it did last time I went) a side of deep fried mushrooms that I find more addictive that Marlboro Reds laced with China White.

Like a lot of restaurants, A trip to Al's is about  more than  food.  It's the drive.  It's the area.  It's the crowd. If all you're after is a good piece of meat, hit the House of Prime Rib ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) on Van Ness or  Black Angus on March Lane if you're in Stockton.  But if you're up for more than just dinner,  and yearn for something more along the lines of a day-long  journey deep into the heart of the San Joaquin Delta, the town of Locke and Al the Wop's beckons....

My friend and I stopped off here recently for a drink at the bar on the way home from Sacramento.  I remember visiting this place when I was young , foot loose and single.  My girl friend and I had a large group of friends in tow and wanted to eat at a fun and hip place.  Everything was served family style at long picnic like tables with benches which really catered to the fun in me.  We conversed with our table neighbors and even sampled some of their food while we waited for ours.....which even elevated the fun level.  Foods ok but it really is a fun place to go!

If you go to Al The Wop's, you can at least say you've been there.  They are "famous" for their Steak Dinner.  ~$40 for two to eat.
If you order it, you will not be pleased.  It consists of a crummy little salad, a strange gummy pasta dish that has watery sauce (but I ate it all anyway) and is served family style, and a chewy fried steak.  But like I said, you don't go there for the FOOD.  You go there to say you Ate At Al The Wop's.  And you get your budweiser, read everything on the walls, try not to lose your balance when you are walking on the floors, and imagine what Locke must've been like in it's heyday.
There's a Chinese restaurant there in Locke as well.  I haven't tried it, but I mean to.  It would be a shame to go to the last decrapitated Chinese town in California and not hit the Chinese restaurant.

After you have your beer, and maybe some nuts, and stare at all the crap stuck in the ceiling, you can tool on down the river to the Ride Hotel in Ride, which is purportedly haunted.  And smells like cat pee and has mannikins everywhere, but I digress.

It's about 20 miles south of Sacramento, just off of I-5, next to the Sacramento River levee.  They only take cash.  The place is an old Chinese railroad labor camp and looks like a back lot on the Paramount lot.  Amazing place!

Best. Bar. Ever.

Think of this as the anti-park.  No magic tans, flat screen tvs, faux hawks, guys in designer denim or frosted tips in sight.  This is a real live, classic american bar where the goals are to drink, play some doobie brothers on the jukebox and hang out with transient bikers.  There are funny artifacts on the wall (a plastic bass in a thong anyone?) with tons of clever signs (teetotalers required to stand)that are straight out of old Americana.  If you are hungry, they have steak, burgers and surprisingly decent pasta.  They also have jars of peanut butter on the table intended to be smeared on your bread, if your into that kind of thing. One of the greatest qualities about this place has to be the staff.  The waiters and bartenders are charming, boisterous and gleefully crude.  The bartenders will have you in stitches, keep your glass full and tell you funny stories or listen to yours.  Throw a dollar on the ceiling, pet the unofficial dog mascot that hangs out looking for scraps and run around this tiny slice of Sacramento area history that will make you feel like you are in another time.

Any restaurant with a racial epithet in the name in this day and age is quite the rugged individual in a sea of sameness. Perplexingly, it repels and draws you in at the same time.

The food's only okay, but it is a really fun place to visit, and the burgers are even better when you slather on the peanut butter.

Everyone must come here at least once in their life.

Well it can be done people.....I am living proof.  You can grow up in a small farming town and survive pretty much unscathed.  WHAT?  Who am I kidding?  I grew up in Walnut Grove and pretty much was raised by the pack of wolves that call themselves reg-u-lars at Al's.  I have pictures of me sitting on the bar at a tender young age posing to have the antlers of the massive mule deer coming out of my head, I have danced on the bar with friends during the http://dot.com age (didn't quite reach Al's), I have cried crocodile tears after having a huge wedge of bench stuck under my thumb (one of my earliest memories).  It hasn't changed much, most of the faces have been there for decades, and I love it.  The biggest change that happened years back is that they started serving other things rather than the NY strip steak that dominated the menu for so many years.  Now I can't really attest to the food these days.  It's pretty much a liquid diet when I go in there these days.  I remember loving it as a teen..however I believe that it's gone down a bit over the years.  I do love the little iceberg salad that comes in the small wooden bowl with the 1000 island dressing plopped in the middle...as for the rest the only thing that sticks out that I loved was the sauteed mushrooms that came on the side of the steak..  Oh oh oh...I forgot, the hamburgers at lunch are/were really good, and the fried bread at lunch slathered in peanut butter makes me drool!

Just go for the atmosphere...funky town, slanted floors, crazy locals.  What more could you ask for!

Love the bar and their steak sandwiches.  If you drink, you must at least stop here and check this old delta town out.  'Strong Buy'!

How can you not love Al the Wop's and where do I start.  Located in the town of Locke, you will find this little gem.  From the dive bar decor to the cheap but strong drinks, I can not recollect a single time I have not thoroughly enjoyed this place, and I have been more times than I remember.  If you have never been there and end up there one day PLEASE don't let the look deter you from eating there if you are hungry cuz the food is great and abundant.  Years ago, there never really was a menu only Big Steak and Little Steak to choose from (loved it the first time I found this out!)  Over the years they have expanded to sandwiches and salads and other entree dishes.  I would strongly suggest the steak.  Thick and juicy and cooked to order, not something you would expect to come out of a place looking like this.  Then comes the sides (WOW): Salad, bread, sauteed mushrooms, French Fries, and Pasta all for, don't quote me on this, $24 for the litle steak.  My only complaint is the lack of public access from the river if you are on a boat.  If that were the case, Al the Wops would definitely be mixed into the rotation of stops we make on the river while boating and wakeboarding!

I've been going to Al's for 22 years now (holy #@$%, what happened to the time!) and stop by every chance I get.  My first time there was with my high school sweetheart for her birthday (her suggestion) back in 1985.  Seems to be kind of a hang out for the RUBs (Rich Urban Bikers) passing through the Delta on the weekends now.  It's a great ride so that makes sense.  Also a great stop if you are coming in by boat on the Delta as there is a dock almost out front.

Read the reviews here and you'll get a good idea of what is going on at Al's.  The food is OK, not great, but the place has so much damn character that you'll break your neck as your head spins around when you walk in.  You enter right into the bar and see all the dollar bills stuck to the ceiling, the crusty old bar and crustier locals.  Pass through that and you'll get to the restaurant where you'll see rows of short picnic like tables and see the menu of about 5 things: a few sandwiches for lunch and steak, spaghetti and fries for dinner.   The salad is chopped up iceberg, the spaghetti sauce is a bit runny and the steak is just a steak but I've always enjoyed the jar of peanut butter on the table.  I've never been too impressed by the food but just sitting there enjoying the place after a hot day in Sacramento, feeling the cool Delta breezes come in at night is a wonderful thing.

If you do go to Al's, part of the charm is spending some time in Locke and it's funky old main drag, all one block of it.  Do a quick search for Locke on the Internet and you'll see that it is one of, if not the last, remaining original Chinatowns in California.   Cool old buildings lining the streets, leaning at VERY precarious angles.  Walk into any of the shops or Al's and you can feel the floors bounce like a trampoline.  Not sure how any of it is up to any kind of code but no one seems to care.   I remember talking to one of the old timers there and he was pointing out the old brothel, school house and some the other finer points.  Walk off the main drag and you'll see some ramshackle houses and a thrift store.  I seem to pick up a great book or some old vinyl most of the time.  I always thought that it would make a great place to disappear one day if I had to and come to think of it now, I guess in a way, I did a few times.

5 stars cause it rocks harder than the Poison and Ratt put together!

Never been there for dinner, can't imagine going there at night. Specially on the bike. Kinda hard to drink and ride. Anyways you get there BEFORE 2 PM (2:01 your outa luck maybe they have some Minestrone soup for ya) and you kin get a good steak sammich. Ever have peanut butter on your steak? You can at Al's. If you don't like steak sammich's for lunch they have ONE other choice PB &J. Remember Al's is a journey NOT a destination. Unlike Squeeze Inn which is a destination NOT a journey

Way cool!  I really don't know how this bar or half of this tiny town is still standing frankly, but it is and I am happy for that. Half of the bar seems to be sinking and the walls look as if you leaned on them, they would topple, but the drinks are good and the decor is fantastic.  I love driving along the river and stopping in this place for a cold beer and although I have not tried the food, I've heard that it is pretty decent.

The restaurant is great and the bar is a good place to hang while waiting for your table. Great little out of the way place with good food and friendly staff.

The town of Locke is an old Chinese settlement that has the feel of a ghost town. Al the Wops looks like an old saloon inside and probably hasn't changed much in a century. You get what you pay for here, greasy steak, flat bread and beer. A great history lesson and it will make you appreciate the culinary hotbed of San Francisco even more. 3 stars for the ambiance. 1 star for the food.
