Better than your average greasy subshop. Big variety. Tons of appetizers that appeal to a variety. And for cheap non gourmet pizza... it's really really good.
I've been going to these guys for years, it's a little less personal than before they did the remodel and the owner knew your order when you walked in the door and even asked to confirm if you were so and so who orders from such and such. Suffice to say the owner knows his customers and cares about them.
It's in the ghetto = why some complain.
New staff always can try your patience when you're hungry.
But bottom line, you get way more than you pay for. -

I LOVE their cheese slices. They are perfect. Thin, crunchy crust. A lot of cheese. The sauce isn't too sweet or acidic. Cheap!
It's gotten extreme too. I walk past this place on my commute home and have to get a slice like...every day. -

Went there last night around 10:40 pm, got a small pizza to go... apparently it's $5 for credit card / which is actually illegal... just wanted to get 2 slices so my friend and I got a small pizza instead. $8.50 - whatever... I thought that was kind of too much for a small pizza... but fine whatever. we were starving and no other place really existed around there to get pizza after 11 pm... Waited 10 minutes... got the pizza, walked home... opened the box and pleasantly surprised at the quality! Thoroughly enjoyed the pizza and were happy people! I recommend this place if you can get over the quirks of a mediocre service established that might be just a bit overpriced.

After moving to Mission Hill recently, we decided to give this place a shot at the recommendation of a neighbor. We ordered takeout and took the walk down to pick-up our food.
When walking inside there was a sense of disorganization regarding where to pick-up or order. Any sort of signage inside would be nice for a first-timer, but we've got it figured out now.
The service wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. My favorite thing about places like this is that generally there is a friendly face that keeps you coming back...I think they must be counting on their food doing the trick!
We loved the fact that you can order online...and we paid online too. That was very nice.
We ordered a hamburger pizza and crispy wings. I would've preferred to have the sauce on the wings, but since we couldn't agree on a sauce, we went with crispy. We also ordered buffalo and honey bbq on the side.
The food was good, maybe even very good. The pizza had about the perfect balance of toppings and sauce and the crust was very good. I was glad it was good because the we passed 3 other pizza places to get there! The wings were excellent...much better than a chain like BWW.
Sounds like you can't go wrong with just about anything although you'd have a hard time convincing me to order ribs here. Also noticed that they had pizza by the slice which could also work out well.
Stop in a give it a shot! -

Friends of ours were over the other night & ordered from here. The delivery was pretty fast - 15-20 mins from the time they ordered to the time the food arrived at the door... & while I live very close, I still feel like sometimes when you order delivery, people take their time.
Their chicken alfredo pizza is amazing! The sauce is super tasty & unique...& the chicken & broccoli were cooked perfectly. While I had to fold the pizza in 1/2 since the crust was a bit weak, it was delicious. Look forward to ordering from here again -

I'm happy not talking to people, especially when I am really hungry. When my blood sugar takes a nose dive I am more or less beyond being talked off the ledge and you better not be holding out on me with a package of Pop Tarts you rat bastard son-of-a-gun. Being able to order chow online and have it paid for online (tip included) takes a lot of hate out of me. Getting said sustenance in a timely manner and in an edible condition is better than any consolation that a Good Samaritan or psychotherapist might give me when I am in these dire straits of hunger.
AK's does all that. This is not to glorify the place, it's really not all that but it is a respectable option. A veggie pizza loaded with broc, spinach, onions and olives and an order of better than average onion rings ordered through Foodler was delivered eerily on time.
Hunger squashed.
Urge to kill subsiding.

I don't care what anyone says, I like AK's. Keep in mind I rarely stray from their chicken fingers. But, I've tried the pizza, BBQ chicken bomb, and burgers - all cheap, and all good.
I've never gotten less than eight pieces of chicken in a six-piece chicken finger plate. You get two sides and they fill that Styrofoam takeout box with all the curly fries it can fit. It's more than enough for two people.
There is almost always the same girl taking your order, although I'm pretty sure she thinks my boyfriend and I are enormous losers for splitting a chicken finger plate as often as we do on a Friday night, she is friendly and efficient.
Way better quality and prices than the Domino's across the street. And, although I haven't ever tried them, they've got some insanely good family size deals.
They're open late. The food always comes up quick. And, despite the toddler that kicked my dog in the face the last time we went, there's ample opportunity for people watching while you wait.
Update: Maybe I take back what I said about the people watching. It's more like adventures in traumatizing childhoods lately. Example: I watched a little girl beg her daddy to quit announcing to the entire place that her mom was a whore while the three waited to share a slice of pizza. -

Last time I went there I ate the spicest Mexican pizza I have EVER tasted. It was so hot that I couldn't eat more than 2 pieces at a time. This is of course coming from a person whose favorite spice is in fact cayenne pepper.
The staff is so-so but the food is always ready quickly. -

Despite driving by it all the time, I never realized AK's Takeout was there for the first year I lived in the area. The frantic night we moved from our apartment in the South End to Mission Hill is when we finally discovered it, and found their pizza to be very good. Plus, I had never had Jalapeno poppers before and thought I'd try some of my boyfriend's, and I've now been hooked on them ever since (still the best ones I've had so far anywhere). The next day, I went to reheat a slice which is usually when pizza tastes even better, and it was AWFUL! It was also awful cold, and eating pizza cold is kind of the ultimate test of its taste. But while hot and fresh, it was definitely one of the best late night pizza trips I've had.
Since then, we usually stick to their other food, and each time we had been pleasantly surprised. They make an amazing cheeseburger, and the fries are to die for. Sadly, the chicken sandwich we usually ordered that was also always amazing now always seems to come bland, dry, and just... blah. I also always try every restaurant's Greek selection, and I'm usually a tough person to please given that I grew up with all that food home-cooked or from down in Astoria, NY, and I did find AK's Greek food to be very tasty. Unfortunately they don't have too much of a selection (I tend to shy away from lamb, but when I went to order one dish that usually also comes in pork, beef and chicken, they only had it in lamb and that wasn't listed on their menu).
They don't usually have good specials unless you have a huge group order you need to place, so don't expect too much, but if you live on the hill it is definitely worth a try. -

When I lived in Mission Hill I probably ordered from AK's twice a week. Although their location leaves something to be desired (there's no seating, really), I think they've mastered the take-out formula. Whenever they delivered they were at my front door LIGHTING fast. Even better, they deliver until 2 am!
I'd give their pizza about a 4 out of 5, and their calzone, dinner specials, and subs all a 5. Their chicken cutlet subs are the best around, and best of all, only cost $5.
Living in the Fenwaty gives me countless opportunities to order out, but I still find myself longing for AK's almost every time. -

I have gotten AK's Takeout Several times to get me through my college education. The pizza is pretty good I have had it a couple of different times. But what I really enjoyed from there are the Calzones, specifically the Buffalo Chicken Calzones...
The best part of these calzones are the size. They may seem a little expensive, but that is because the large is literally a giant pizza folded in half. They are massive and can last up to 3 days in leftovers due to volume. The taste is not the best I have had, but it is above average. Take the size + above average taste + quick delivery time, you have a winning combination. -

Why a +1 star update? Because I have found my rhythm with AK's. While waiting for the 66 at 10:00 pm, the amount of cat calls is pretty unbearable and there is no safe place on the sidewalk of Tremont to wait for that dang bus. If you live anywhere near the Roxbury Crossing T stop, just pop inside of AK's, buy yourself a soda, and patiently wait for the next bus (trust me, it'll take a while). The guys were super-sweet when I did this. It really is the only establishment where you can wait indoors and they're open late! Not bad.
As an added bonus, I put an extra nickel into the soda machine and got a WHOLE quarter back!Listed in: Living on Mission Hill

2nd Review:
Since my last review, the quality has gone way down. Too much sauce on the ribs, bland and mushy mac n cheese, no flavor to the rice pilaf, nothing noteworthy. I'm so over it. Everything tasted like it came from a can.
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------
AK's is a fairly new takeout place located just across from the Roxbury Crossing T stop on the orange line. There used to be some run down type of place there that I was never comfortable frequenting in my 3 years living around here (it was kind of dingy looking). AK's has done a nice job renovating the place - Very well lit exterior with a nice quality banner. The menus inside on the wall are nice and easy to read. It's clear that the owner takes pride in his establishment. A lot of places around this part of mission hill let their businesses get sketchy looking...
ONTO the food!
They have a large selection of offerings - good pizzas (the sausage is great), calzones, pasta dishes (I love the stuffed shells). The garlic bread isn't so great but hey, it comes with the pasta so...
They also have fried seafood, chicken dinners, and barbeque! Beef ribs and pork ribs. The beef ribs are massive but chewy... the pork ribs are more tender... not the softest. They are DROWNED in sauce by default so when ordering ask for "light sauce" - seriously too much sauce. But the ribs are great with the cornbread and yams.
The collard greens taste canned, you can skip them. Ditto the maccaroni and cheese - bland and mushy.
I like this place for the ribs, yams, jalapeno poppers, rice pilaf, and pasta dishes. They also have vita-water and cheesecake.
I like that when I call they see my # on the ID and the computer knows my address based on my last call so you don't have to repeat all that info - ordering goes by quicker. The owner is kind and approachable with suggestions. Decently priced. Friendly delivery guys. -
Review from Sara M.
I've worked near Rox Crossing for 6 months now, and I get takeout once a week or so. AK's is the office go to because they have lots of stuff on the menu and everyone is happy...We usually get salads, pizza, wraps and subs, everything is decent, but my major disappointment is when you walk in and order a slice, it gets pulled off a warmer and plated, not heated in the oven, so you get a lukewarm slice that's been sitting around all morning.

If you're thinking about this place, chances are you want something quick, inexpensive, delicious, filling and you're waaay past worrying about whether or not it's good for you.
As far as those options are concerned, AK's is a smidge above the rest. Their subs are much better than you'll find at the other pizza/sub shops in the area. If pizza or calzone is more your thing, be prepared for a little extra grease (which is really what held me to three stars), but their toppings are still legit. Price-wise, they're pretty middle of the road for this type of place.
As far as service goes, there's nothing to complain about, but not much to holler over either. I usually pick up, but the few times I've gotten delivery they've been very expedient. Some of the workers have strong accents and are hard to understand, but other than that no problems yet.. -

I really like this place. They have something for everyone. Their service is quick and the food portions are good. The pizza isn't great, but it's the only thing I wouldn't suggest. The burgers are cheap and they'll put any toppings you want on them. They are cooked well. The gyros are really good. I enjoy the spicy fries as well.

I live down the street from AK's, so they're often a take-out / delivery spot we rely on when we have people hanging out and I don't have enough food to whip up something for everyone.
The food is pretty hit or miss. The hits include, but are not limited to, the following:
French fries - consistently crispy, which I find rare for a delivery place
Calzones - huge portions and hearty fillings. The small is large enough to split between two people for lunch, no problem.
Salads - fresh, crisp lettuce and a decent amount of peppers, tomatoes, onions and jalapeos. There's also a good amount of topping if you get something other than the garden salad. The only downside is that the pita bread is flat and tasteless.
Hamburgers - cooked medium unless you specify otherwise, the burgers are tasty and come on a big, fluffy bun. They also use shredded lettuce and diced pickles on the burgers, which makes me very happy.
Chicken wings - nice and crisp, they've got a nice seasoning to them.
Chicken fingers - these things are massive! They're nice and juicy though, all white meat, and the breading is always nice and crisp. They also have a good selection of dipping sauces.
The infamous Captain AK's Plate - this is probably only infamous at my house, but it's basically $17 worth of fried seafood, fries, and cole slaw. The seafood includes clam strips and whole clams, scallops, shrimp and fish.
The not so great:
The pizza - the crust is thick and chewy, although the toppings, as with the calzones, are plentiful.
The pulled rib sandwiches - over-sauced, and has wayyy too many bits of hard fat in there.
The cold subs - they just can't seem to get the toppings right, ever. So frustrating. Also, the bread on the cold subs tend to be hard, although if you get a toasted one, it's okay.
All in all, a decent place, with what seems to be rising prices. However, it's definitely a step above Cappy's, 'cause man, I hated that place. And I pissed off their delivery driver so badly one night that I couldn't order from them anymore. :-D -

For the past four years or so, AK's has been our standby place to order pizza from. I'm never ordering anything from them again though.
Last night, I placed an online order at 7:32 p.m. At 8:24, I called AK's to see where it was, and I got no answer. At 8:27, called again, no answer. Looked in my bank account and noticed I'd been charged for the order.
At 8:34, after we'd decided to head down there and get it ourselves, someone called me from there, saying the power had gone out but was back on. They said they'd make it right then and it would be here in 30 minutes. I figured I'd get some good free stuff out of the deal, so I said this would be fine.
At 9:15, someone called from AK's and said it would be another 15 minutes. I reluctantly said this was OK.
At 10:04, it wasn't here, so I called AK's. No answer. I called back the cell phone number from which someone had called at 9:15. She was on her way home and said the power went back out and someone was supposed to have called me. I told her no one had. She said to call tomorrow at 11 a.m. and someone would send it for free. I told her I'd be at work at 11 a.m. tomorrow, and I didn't want it tomorrow, which was why I had ordered it an hour and a half ago. She finally agreed to have the manager call me.
At 10:11, no manager had called. I called back the first cell phone number, did get someone who sounded like the manager. I said I was trying to reach AK's. He said "AK's is closed." I told him I'd placed an order at 7:32 and it wasn't there, and someone had called at 9:15 and said it would be 15 minutes. He told me that they were closed because the power went out. He didn't apologize at all that I'd been told 15 minutes and wasn't called back when the power went back out. He finally agreed that he'd credit my card back within two days. I asked about the other AK's location, and he told me, "we have another one, but it's not in Boston -- it's in Southie." I decided to forgo the geography lesson and asked why they hadn't delivered it from the other location then, or, you know, called. Or brought me pizza from somewhere else. Or refunded my money yet. He said he couldn't help me and to let them know if my card wasn't credited within two days. He said he'd have the owner call me right away as well.
The owner called me at about 10:45. He kept saying "it wasn't our fault; the power was out" and kept rationalizing why they hadn't called me, refunded me, gotten me pizza from somewhere else. He also told me he'd be happy to have the pizza show up tomorrow. Didn't offer me anything to make up for it and didn't apologize.
I understand that things happen, but the responsible thing to do is to keep people informed and to be apologetic, not to rationalize and act like I'm inconveniencing him by calling to find out where the pizza is that I ordered three hours ago.
EDIT: A few months after we broke up with AK's, they were still offering us free stuff, and we got over it, and we had great break-up sex (take-out sex?) and now we're back to ordering from AK's, and they're back to having three stars instead of one. They haven't screwed up the order since then. -

I have to second the motions of the other reviewers--this place has gone down hill in the past year or two. Their prices have gone up too, but you can still get a small cheese pizza for 5.99 or a large one for 7.99--which is a great deal. . .adding toppings though makes the prices get out of control. They also have good price deals if you are ordering tons of food. The subs are OK, the pizzas are just OK too, the other food is hit or miss between bad and OK--pretty much nothing surpases OK.
There is a $10 min on cards. -

I have been going there since AK's has opened. I will normally get pizza, chicken finger dinner, or a burger platter. I find the portions large and fairly priced. (even if they have gone up a little) The people at the register are generally friendly to me. I think it is the best takeout place within walking distance of my house.

My wife and I love their burger, the toppings are great and I had the MONSTER 2.5lb burger and I loved every second of it. It was like I was in burger heaven. The people that work there are extremely nice and helpful, they made the experience of being at Roxbury Crossing not so frightening.

somehow my friend keeps convincing me to get food here, and every time i want to punch her in the face afterwords. i've never had good food here before. every time i've had it , it's either overcooked or undercooked. the pizza is disgusting. it's always super greasy, and i hate that metallic taste on the bottom of it from whatever they cook it it. i've sampled a few other things they've had there, and i've never had more than a bite because it was that gross. and worst of all is when you're done eating, you get the feeling like there's a bowling ball in your gut and you can't move for an hour afterwords. just dont get anything there, it's not worth it in anyways way shape or form.
