Review from Andrew S.
Let's start off with an introduction. On the first week of working for the company I am employed by, we order Japanese food. I am handed the menu and the place is called "Akiyama", I like the name and the place sounds very authentic in Japanese food like sushi. I love saying: Akiyama. By the way, if raw fish does not sound appetizing to you, Akiyama has other cooked menu items. Sushi is on the top list of foods I like. So the delivery comes and it's for three of us. We're sitting in the cafeteria eating and another co-worker comes in and says "you ordered from Akiyama and you didn't ask me?" At that point I can tell that Akiyama is considered the accepted local Japanese restaurant before I even arrived at the company. At Akiyama the sushi is made well and fresh. It's not the best I had but it is very good, considering it's the closest and practically the only sushi spot within an acceptable distance.
It is located in a small lot or plaza with good decent parking around the area. It's not different at all from other Japanese places, upon dining in. You walk in and there's only a handful of seats. There are the Japanese style partitions for decoration and practical usage. The host in front, if there, will greet and show you to your table. They will pull tables together if you have more than a group of 10 or so, this was done for a birthday lunch; being a small restaurant, it will still work out. You can see the sushi maker doing his thing in the back and all other dishes come from the back kitchen. The salad is pretty basic but it is fresh and a good palate opener, thus goes the same for the common Miso soup served in most Japanese restaurants, Akiyama serves the Miso soup light with a hint of the Dashi flavor including the kelp and bits of tofu. The fish in the sushi is good by itself, meaning before I start popping the whole thing with dabbing a bit of wasabi and soy sauce, I usually separate each component to one piece of the roll and try each part like the seaweed, rice, fish and other ingredients individually, especially the fish by itself: each variety are fresh and have good flavor.
Of all the years and numerous dine in and deliveries, never had a problem or mixed up order. Four Dumbs Up. -

This place is awesome. The sushi is good and fresh, the staff is super nice as well. They have really good lunch specials, definitely worth a try. I've loved everything I've tried here. If it's not lunchtime, the prices are average for sushi. Probably one of the best sushi places in Queens.
If you're staying to eat, be warned it is TINY. I usually prefer to eat in early here, as there is not a lot of seating at all. The biggest tables hold up to 4, so don't come here in huge groups. -

They have the best sushi ever! The service is really friendly. I love coming her. We drive all the way over from Astoria to eat here.

Hands down one of the best places in Queens for sushi because it's always fresh. The staff has been there for years and is always friendly and accommodating. It's a small location so in the winter come prepared with a scarf just in case you end up sitting next to the door.

Since I was in the neighborhood, we decided to come to this restaurant for lunch.
The server was nice and fairly attentive. The place is clean and had cute decor. We had the following: shumai, sashimi deluxe, shrimp tempura roll, salmon avocado roll, spicy tuna roll, and eel cucumber roll. I wasn't a fan of the shumai, but the rest were okay. The fish tasted fresh, which is a plus.
In my opinion, there are other sushi restaurants that are better that are closer to where I live. -

Ehh... (Based on the sushi) I suppose it's alright if you're really hankering and need an immediate neighborhood fix. But if I had the option to go elsewhere, I'd likely seize it. The rice in 2 out of my 3 rolls was undercooked/over-seasoned or something. Off-putting.
To be fair, the California roll was one of the better ones I've had in quite a while and the bites of nabeyaki udon I snatched from BF were tasty. -

My mom's entire family frequents this restaurant on a regular basis, which is definitely a sign of great food because we don't just eat anywyere. We even started having our Christmas dinners there because the food is so good!
Our normal dinners start with "Age Dashi Tofu" which is cubes of tofu lightly fried, served in a thin sauce. We also have seaweed salad and crab salad along with miso soup. It's possible to get full on these appetizers alone!
For my meal, my latest obsession is with "Green Mountain," which is a shrimp tempura roll with slices of avocado on top and a special sauce. The "Spider Roll," a fried soft shell crab roll, is also extremely good. Even the basic california rolls are so yummy! For birthday parties, we usually get a huge tray full of it to go along with the Italian food from Martha's Vineyard!
I don't actually eat the sushi (raw fish) because I like the dishes that I do order. However, I have had the "King Roll," before which is a california roll with tuna on top and I did enjoy it. My dad, along with my grandfather and uncles, usually get the sushi or sashimi and the owner, Winnie, is always more than happy to substitute certain fish for others if my dad doesn't like a particular kind.
My cousins usually order the dinner boxes, which consist of a chosen entree (ie. chicken katsu or terriyaki or salmon) along with rice, california rolls, salad, dumplings and more. It fills them up well!
Even when we're full, we usually always order dessert. The green tea ice cream and the red bean ice cream are so creamy and delicious! But beware, one dish of it can probably feed three people if you're full!
The owners and staff are great. Because we go there so often and because my grandfather has assisted the owner in terms of engineering and architectural issues, they know us very well. We eat in or order out and always enjoy every bite! -

Akiyama was the first sushi I've ever tried and to me it was always standard, especially once I broadened my Japenese food taste. This is definetly not the best sushi resturant in Queens, I can name 3-4 better ones in just Whitestone/Bayside/College Point. The sushi is fresh though. They just have your standard rolls though, not to many speciality or house rolls. The prices are good, they deliver quick (I'm 5 blocks away..)
UPDATE: just had the beef negimaki for the first time the other day...very well prepared and tasty, give it a shot! -

The food is fabulous! You cannot go wrong with the Bento Box Lunch Special as the the portions are fairly large and the price is very reasonable......and the quality of the food is excellent! The decor is very nice and the staff is very friendly and accommodating, so that makes it a warm and cozy place, although it is a little cramped because the tables are very small.

My mom LOVES this place. We've gone a couple of times and we're never disappointed. This is why I LOVE sushi!
When you eat here, my opinion would be to order all kinds of rolls! I recommend the Caterpillar Roll and Dragon Roll. A MUST! The Spider Roll is pretty good too. Those are my favorites! The shrimp tempura is a great appetizer. The sushi is also very fresh.
Their fried banana ice cream is really good. I just dont like all the whipped cream they put on it. Fried Red bean and green tea ice cream! Yummy!
The waiter/waitresses are very kind!!
The place is small so there aren't a lot of seats. But great for 2-4 people!
However, if you go late at night when its near closing time, the sushi isnt as fresh. So don't go too late!!! :) -

I love this place! Since I'm not the biggest fan of fish, I always get the California roll and the Spring rolls. They taste so yummy and fresh! I'm now craving it as we speak hahah. This is totally a place for you to try out, and it's so cute inside!

I almost hate to give this soothing little spot a great review, because the last thing I want to do is lose my chance for a lunchtime table. However, Akiyama deserves high praise, as an oasis of serenity, charming and friendly service by name, and delicious Japanese cuisine.
While the space is a bit tight, Winnie and her staff will happily move tables to welcome as many hungry guests as possible. While takeout or delivery are options if the place is packed, sitting down with a bowl of their miso or clear soup is a great way to clear a work-weary mind of the morning's woes.
Nearly everything I've tried has been delicious--especially the yasitame appetizer (stir-fried veggies), the harumaki (spring roll), lightly fried tempura, salmon teriyaki, and my all-time fave, nabeyaki udon, which is rich with fresh veggies, seafood, and a silky egg.
Sushi-devouring friends and colleagues have been impressed, although my husband doesn't like the warmish sushi rice. Due to a health issue, I only eat the cooked sushi bits, but each roll has been carefully prepared and tastes crisp and yummy--with a proper mix of textures. While I'm especially fond of their East roll (sans tobiko, of course), the tempura maki roll and even the California roll have surprised and pleased my fussy palate.
While it's a bit pricy for lunch, Akiyama is worth stretching the lunch budget--and each time, I leave happily full and ready to take on the afternoon with a little more energy.
As for wheelchair accessibility, the entry turns might be tricky, and the restroom is often blocked by supplies on the kitchen entry. The restaurant is all on one level, though, so I'm sure Winnie and her staff would cheerfully do everything possible to welcome a guest on wheels. -

Ugh!! Disgusting! Avocado is brown! I gave it a couple of shots & not good. Small place with poor decor. Rolls are tiny & dry. Save yourself from this awful place & go to casa Asia .5 mile away towards Malba.

College Point, NY
Some of the freshest, best tasting sushi in Queens. I love ordering the sushi/sashimi boat. The Miso Soup hits the spot. This place speaks for itself. The only bad thing I have to say is that I think the restaurant itself is too small and that is unfortunate for such a good place.
