Long Beach, CA
I really enjoyed the food, but apparently the owners make the waitresses stand in particular places while customers are eating. This made me feel VERY uncomfortable. I felt as if I was being watched the entire time, and I couldn't help but feel sorry for the servers.
Not the emotions I want to experience while eating an otherwise enjoyable meal.

The most AMAZING Uni of all time! The fish was so fresh and the portions were incredibly generous. I love this place.

Not good and bad value.
I honestly think the people that rate Aki's high are people who have not been to good sushi restaurants. I had the salmon and yellow tail sashimi and both were underwhelming. The cut of the fish was on the small side and both tasted less than fresh. The fish had not turned, but it definitely was a while since it last saw the sea.
At this point we wanted to leave, but got two more things (spicy tuna and spider hand roll) just to be polite. Both were just decent until we received the bill. $40 for these four items, overpriced and underwhelmed. The only reason why I didn't give it a 1 star is that we did not get violently ill.
Save your money, go to Taiko in Irvine, it is worth the long drive and wait. -

Ordered online through http://eat24hours.com. We put tip with cash, and like we stated during check out, we tipped with cash.
The next day I noticed the below email. Not only did this restaurant have the nerve to "demand" a $10 tip for a $40 order, but Eat 24 went ahead and placed the charge without my consent. Unbelievable. Not only will I never eat here, I'll be seeing the owners in small claims court.

I have been on the big hunt for a good sushi place in Long Beach. I don't have crazy expectations for sushi, just that it must be authentic, fresh, and not fusion. I found out about Aki from Yelp and I was excited to try it, since I heard that this place is an authentic restaurant, run by a Japanese chef: Aki.
I came here for dinner and immeditately noticed that the sushi bar had 3 stations, run by different sushi chef. Aki's station was full and the other station didn't have anyone. Since I was super hungry and couldn't wait, I just sat at one of the available station. That was my first mistake.
I can be critical on who my sushi chef is. I find that those with years of experience will know how to create delicious sushi. Truthfully, you can find a fish slicer anywhere, but a skilled craftsman will make a big difference to your sushi experience.
My sushi chef was really young and must have been in his early 20's. I later learned that he was a novice, as he had to ask Aki questions about sushi several times. He even had to ask Aki to cut the albacore to make albacore sashimi for him.
The other disappointing fact was that the sushi was not fresh at all. I literally tried most of the specials (blue fin tuna, red snapper, bonito etc) and was not happy with any of it. The funny thing is that I kept ordering...I was super hungry! I should have stopped, but I really wanted to give Aki the benefit of the doubt. The last straw was the albacaore sashimi. The sashimi was not fresh and it tasted frozen. I never had frozen sushi before.
Despite my bad experience, I am willing to give Aki a second chance. Next time, I will make sure I sit at Aki's station. -

I really wanted to like this place because it was so close to my apt.
I got a dragon roll and it was the first and only time I had ever had eel with the BONES still in it! I was choking the whole time trying to chew and swallow that stuff..
never again. sorry Aki's. -

It's rare to find authentic Japanese Food this good outside of Japan but Aki delivers.
We have been coming here for over 2 years and every time it is just as good as the first. We go for the Chicken Karage (Japanese Fried Chicken), the Ginger Dressing, the Aji, the Half Shell Oysters, the Quail Eggs and the Vegetable Roll with Cream Cheese.
The Service is awesome, Aki-San is always willing to share the Saki and the fish is fresh and tasty. The Best Japanese Food, Sushi included, in Long Beach! -

I love this place! I have been here quite a few times and each time just as good as the previous.
Pros: excellent variety of sushi (I recommend the Oh! Spicy and Laker Roll), amazing thai entrees (Crying Tiger), the service is very welcoming and they definitely cater to their guests! Big screen to watch the games. Pretty much my favorite local spot to go to.
Cons: Parking. Depending on what time you come in, you're battling w/ getting a good parking spot. I never really had a problem, maybe once or twice. Obviously it doesn't effect my opinion of Aki.
Great place to go! -

So I'm a little bit of a snob when it comes to sushi. Well, then again, who doesn't want their sushi fresh and tasty? Well this is the place to go if you want just that. I usually get the spider roll, crunch roll and of course, the tuna roll. Everytime I go, its the same great tasting food. The service, well the service is awesome, the servers are always attentive and alert. The overall restaurant is so clean, you can eat off the floor, but I wouldn't recommend that! : )
Bottom line, go check it out if you want tasty rools, good service and a clean atmosphere! -

Torrance, CA
I agree that this place is very clean and inviting. The staff members are very helpful and everything's freshly prepared in a quick manner.
For you boys who don't want to miss the Laker game, this is the perfect place to take your date for a fair compromise. They have two flat screens so you can look up and check the score every now and then...lol.
Edamame is served hot here and compliments well with a large bottle of Sapporo beer! I enjoyed their yellowtail tuna sashimi, crunchy rolls, long beach rolls, and spider rolls.
The downside is that parking's a bit scarce and the table for two is too small for large orders since they bring it all at once. -

I love sushi, I have loved sushi since I was 8 years old. This is my sushi restaurant that I compare all other sushi restaurants to. Actually, that isn't true. The sushi chef is the sushi chef I compare all others too. I have been eating sushi served by Aki for 20 years and I have followed him to 3 different sushi restaurants.
Aki always gets the freshest fish and is always up for recommending something you should try. I recommend you eat one of everything on the special board. Some other must haves are the yellow tail cheek, oysters and green mussels.
The staff is always on top of things and are quick to clear plates and refill drinks.
When I go to Long Beach, Aki Sushi is always a must have. -

dun...dun...dun...duuuuuuuun!
I chose to write an update on an existing review.
Akis, I've gotta knock a few stars from ya, pal.
I love love love Akis sushi...it's the place to go in Long Beach for fresh quality fish at a decent price. However, tonight was quite disappointing. And as a matter of fact, in all my recent visits, I have noticed the sushi portions have shrunk to itty bitty sushi hors d'oeuvres.
Nah-uh!
Irasshaimase -- up yours man.
I remember many moons ago when the portions were generous and fulfilling.
What happened to those days, Aki?
I have faith that you will wise up and start going back to your old ways...because this rabbit food ain't gonna cut if for this hungry lady.Listed in: Top Places I be Kickin' It At.

Long Beach, CA
I'm still torn about this place...I have friends that rant and rave about it...so I had to try it out for myself...I was seriously underwhelmed when I first walked in...I guess I expected too much...like the place had been overhyped in my head
So here's what I ordered and here's what I thought of each:
-Dynamite: tasty but really small and not that much scallops...I wish they would more some masago in it {or more masago if there was some in it cause I couldn't taste it at all}
-Kama: good flavor but again...too small and I had to ask for some ponzu sauce to go with it
-Spider roll: the soft shell crab was crispy and flavorful...all around a good roll
-Uni and Amaebi: this is where they set themselves apart...the chef let me have one piece of each...for $8...not a bad deal...rather than having to order one order of each...good quality...not the best I've had but definitely not the worst
I will give them a try again soon...and this time I will sit at the bar...get a feel for the sushi chef and see if he's really as amazing as most of the regulars say he is -
Review from Soleil D.
Hm, I rarely give sushi joints a bad rating but this place just didn't make MY cut. I'm comparing Aki's to all the sushi places I have ever been to. For reference, I lived in Westwood for four years meaning I got a little spoiled; there are delicious sushi places at EVERY corner.
Why this place didn't make my cut:
1. It's overpriced
2. The menu lacks variety
3. The rolls I had were -ok.
4. The teriyaki chicken tasted like one of those microwavable dishes you get a trader joe's.
The positives:
1. Big screen TV
2. Good amount of seating
3. Parking lot -

I felt the menu and selections were lacking. The food was not bad, but very average. I left unsatisfied because I had a hard time ordering due to the lack of the menu.
Service was friendly. However, I'd say the service I've experienced at 98% of the sushi establishments I've been to has always been great. So, good job on the consistency.
They also stay open till 10 when most of the others close at 9. -

--Update 2/21/08--
I finally made it back here, and while it has improved since when they first opened, I am still not impressed. The whole lighting situation has been fixed, and I now find the inside rather pleasant and tranquil. I've reconciled myself to the fact that every restaurant in Long Beach now has to have a large screen TV, no matter what kind of restaurant it is, so that doesn't bother me. The unfriendly server that Miki described in his review is long gone, and the servers now are friendly, Japanese, and charming. If we had only had great sushi, I would have really liked the place. But the fish was only average, and our non-Japanese sushi chef had no imagination whatsoever. Most sushi chefs flourish when we ask them to surprise us with their own creations, but not this guy. The place definitely has a local, regular neighborhood crowd, but we didn't find anything to make us want to come back.
--Original review--
Eh. Clearly it was too good to be true that a sushi bar was opening within walking distance. It just opened a week or two ago, and I was looking forward to trying it out. It had a horrid atmosphere, with bright florescent lighting, some annoying radio station that was more commericals than music, and a sorty of sleepy, neighborhood crowd. The sushi was OK, but just OK. Part of me wants to give this place another chance in case I was wrong, but it's hard to justify wasting my time here when there are so many other better sushi places, and so many places in general that have a better atmosphere in which I can enjoy my evening. This place can be safely skipped, in my opinion. -

WOW, sucks to be a discriminated against sushi snob, me thinks. Or maybe it was lack of deo' under the arms, mang....I can't believe the lackluster reviews Aki has received. Oh, the SHAME!
I have only had two dining experiences here thus far... but both were absolutely YUMMIRIFIC. There are definitely vast differences from dining at the sushi bar or at one of the small tables adjacent from said sushi bar. It's not a very roomy place...and does have a tendency to fill up fast, so if you can nab a spot at the bar - best do it!
This gives you a perfect opportunity to engage with the sushi chefs... and try things you might not have otherwise known about, buy the chefs a drink or three, and refill the sake often. I had some of the best sushi -ever- at Aki, and ummm... coming from the East coast where the 3 languages taught in my high school were:
Latin - yawn (dead)
French - oui
and
JAPANESE - !!!!
I think I can say withoutta doubt that contrary to what some may doubt as 'good enough or authentic enough' is actually quite delish, indeed.
But it's ok if ya disagree... thtat just means MORE FOR ME. Ha! -
Review from Ashleigh E.
Long Beach, CA
A friend of mine told me about this place and as I am always looking for a good sushi joint and this one is right around the corner from me, the boyfriend and I decided to check it out.
First impression - this place is SPOTLESS. The boyfriend used the restroom and said that it was the cleanest one he'd ever seen at a restaurant. Always a plus.
Not only that, but the waitstaff was on top of it when it came to clearing plates. Not seconds after we ate the last roll off a dish, a waiter/waitress would magically appear to take it away. Seriously, I don't know where they came from because there was no one next to me when I ate the last Spicy Tuna roll and then BAM! there she was right next to me taking the plate. Color me impressed!
Now, you might be asking yourself, "Self, if she's so impressed, why is she only giving the place 3 stars?". To which I would reply, "Hold your freaking horses, I'm getting to it!". Then we would laugh and laugh! But really though - there were some things I wasn't impressed with. Namely - the food.
Every (or at least most) sushi restaurant has their list of the standard rolls (CA, Spicy Tuna, Philly, Veggie, etc) and then their list of specialty rolls. We tried a little of both and while the specialty rolls were very tasty (the Hawaiian was my favorite), the standard rolls left a lot to be desired in my opinion. They were small and relatively flavorless. Not BAD, but definitely not at the same level as the other rolls were. Perhaps this is a sales technique they use to encourage people to order the specialty (and more expensive) rolls?
The other thing I didn't care for (and this is strictly a personal preference thing) is that I felt it was way too quiet. I don't mind a peaceful setting, but this made me feel like if I had a conversation, not only would everyone be able to hear it easily, but I would be disturbing the peace. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef that served us, while efficient and knowledgeable, said nothing to us. When he wasn't making the rolls for us he was standing there watching the game on TV. No attempt at conversation was made, not even a "how are you". I'm not saying I need to become best friends with my sushi chef and swap dark secrets - but can I at least have a little eye contact?
All in all, it wasn't bad and the prices were reasonable. It definitely hasn't made my favorites list but I may come back if I'm in the mood for some quick, cheap sushi. -

I visited this place a couple of weeks ago. I had been to Aki Sushi on 7th St many times and have always had great experiences. I was excited to see the new Aki on Redondo open up. Apparently the sushi chef left and opened up his own joint, which they made clear had no standing ties to the Aki on 7th St.
My husband had the Sashimi combo platter and I had tempura and california rolls. I had to make up my dinner with side orders since they don't have any teriyaki like most Sushi places do. I found the menu a bit limited.
The restaurant did seem sort of antiseptic and the wait staff has a bit of a language barrier problem. They were over zealous in clearing plates from our table, almost as if they were trying to rush us out even though it was not crowded at all.
All in all, we are not in any big rush to return, clearly dissapointed. -

Me and my boyfriend stopped here for lunch after seeing how packed it always is for dinner.
I appreciated the stark decor and cleanliness. The workers were friendly.
The reason why I'm only giving Aki 3 stars is because of the sub par sushi. The rice was slightly overcooked and lacked flavor. My cut rolls were sloppy and they fell apart as I lifted them with my chopsticks.
The avocado tasted like it was pre-sliced and then stored uncovered in a refrigerator. Yuck.
The vegetable tempura was excellent, though. Perfectly breaded and crispy. -

Let's see, I walked in with a date who just wanted to have a nice cup of warm Sake. We were told by the lady host there that they are a restaurant, not a bar and we were refused service. Seriously? I would have been happy to get some sushi (I love sushi), but after that treatment... I'm not sure if I'll be going back there EVER. This place is not very professional.

No, no, no. I LOVE the other Aki's on 7th that I reviewed. I'd heard that this one was run by a guy that left the other place and that it wasn't that great and it REALLY ISN'T.
I tried this out two nights ago and it was not amazing. I should have turned around and walked out when I walked in and smelled what might have been week old fish odor. BLAH. We ordered a spicy tuna roll to get started cuz that's what my friend craved and it was awful. SOO fishy tasting. We thought...hmm...you can't really get a crunch roll wrong, right? Wrong. You can and they did. I layered the sriracha sauce all over the pieces so I didn't taste fishy fish. We should have learned our lesson at spicy tuna.
Never again.
Shame, too cuz it's like a few steps away from home.
BLAH.
I give one star for the smiley service. -

Just got back from a first meal there. Pleasantly suprised. Used to go the old place on 7th all the time. I give it four stars compared to that, which would probably get three. Probably won't go back to the old place any more unless I am in the mood for Thai at the same meal.
Our service was prompt and attentive. Nice fat bamboo chopsitcks. The place is super clean. The building is essentially brand new. Parking was a snap even at 8PM on a Saturday.
The fish was tasty and fresh. The rolls had more of a "clear" flavor than a "creamy" one.
We're definately going back and we have to drive all the way across town to get there! -

I have been wanting to try Aki's for some time now, so we finally went to check it out. I'm happy to announce that we were not disappointed! There is an actual Japanese sushi chef who speaks Japanese (bonus!) and the staff is very courteous.
We looked at the menu, but decided we wanted the traditional sushi, so we just asked Aki: can we start with ne omaguro and one ika?
Since it was a Tuesday night, there wasn't much of a crowd, so we received our orders quickly and with a kind smile. One after the other we ordered more sushi until we were full, and for a party of three, our final tab was around $110. Not bad in my book for a few hungry people wanting fresh, quality sushi!

Aki's Sushi is just fantastic. It's quickly becoming a weekly ritual for me.
Everything I've eaten here has been absolutely delicious. Some of the freshest fish around. But what really gives this place an edge above other sushi restaurants in the area is its low-key atmosphere and attentive staff.
Unlike places in nearby Belmont Shore, you can have a conversation with your friends during dinner and actually HEAR what they're saying. I love the laid back vibe. Plus you never have to fight to get a server's attention. One of its many cheerful waitresses or skilled sushi chefs (Yes, even Aki himself!) are always on the ready.
Oh, and did I mention the sushi? It's delicious. :) -

My husband and I LOVE Aki's Sushi, he offers quality fish. Aki's is a traditional Japanese style sushi restaurant. The restaurant is clean, most reviews complain about the plain walls (no art), but we go for the sushi not the decor.
** They added decorations!
*Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Salmon and Halibut are our favorites. Our favorite rolls are the Sam's Special, Alaskan and the Spicy Scallop Roll.
It's rare finding Sushi places that are traditionally Japanese, many are Korean and Thai infused (but they are tasty too). -

This is my favorite sushi restaurant!
I've been traveling all over the USA in my teardrop trailer (http://alisontravelsbl...) and have been to several sushi places along the way. There weren't any I came across as good as Aki's.
I recommend the Alaska roll...by far my favorite roll. If you don't see something you like, tell them and they will make something special for you. Aki, Craig and Alex aim to please!

Today was my first time trying this place out. I have to say, this place is a big difference from all the sushi places I've been to. The service was excellent, and the fish was tasted/smelled/is FRESH, not like many sushi places. I got the sashimi plate (which included the blue fin.... delicious.), the alaskan roll, clams, and two chef-special plates. The specials Aki made us was ammmmaaazing (had to emphasize that).
The service was also great! The waitresses were friendly and we got everything we asked for quickly. Although the bill came out to be pricey for two people, I realized it was because we kept ordering all the good stuff. It was worth it. -

Ty D. and I came here for dinner a while back, that was my first and last time there. I was under the impression that this was going to be a duplicate of the Aki/Baiplu on 7th, but it's completely seperate. After finding this out we were still cool with staying and trying it out.
We waited forever to get our food and when it did come the portions were tiny which is a total bummer because the prices did not reflect the portions at all. The food did not taste bad, but it was not good enough to go back.
When we left we were still hungry and went to Starbucks for some dessert to fill us up. -

As a new resident to Long Beach, my boyfriend and I were pleasantly surprised to stumble across a great sushi restaurant close by. You can't miss it... huge white sign that says "AKI SUSHI" as you're driving on Redondo.
The atmosphere is not the best I've seen, but it's very clean and the service and the sushi were both surprisingly very good. It's not insanely crowded like most other sushi restaurants, and you have a choice of eating at the bar or at a table.
Hamachi melted in your mouth, you can't go wrong with pork gyoza, best Philly roll I've had in awhile, and my boyfriend says the Poke salad was a little spicy, but overall good.
I'm definitely going back. -

Worst sushi i have ever had in my entire life....
Me and my man went in here and should have known when we walked in to turn right back around because it reeeeeeeked of fish which is not a good sign. We ordered the albacore and yellowtail sashimi and it was so bad texture taste and smell wise that we could barely stomach it.... He almost threw up and i only ate it because i felt bad and was afraid of being rude. The only thing that wasnt that bad was some little salads they have with some seared fish on it but that is only because of all the sauce on it to mask the flavor of the fish
Never going back again EVER -

So sad to be writing this...but after many years of following Aki, I believe the tour ends here...maybe, because it is really fresh and yummy.
I was there with a friend talking about a recent trip to Germany, when a regular(read daily customer who thinks he owns the place), eaves dropping apperently, tapped me on the shoulder-scolded me for having fun, loudly , before leaving. Now the waitress was mortified, Aki said nothing to the rude regular, and we asked for our check and promptly left.
That being said, the pieces have gotten very small, it's a bit pricey, and the environment is STERILE and AWFUL---get some background music or something, Aki.
3 stars because of the history. -

Aki's is a great sushi restaurant. the place is always clean and very inviting. I love Aki and the staff. The sushi was usually always really fresh and tasty. Aki has some different kind of sushi on special as well that are really good.
Why I had to go for three stars.
The toro is not always that good though. Sometimes pretty chewy which is not a good thing. Also I love Aki but if his station is full then you have to sit on his son's side or wait. His son is nice but quiet and I don't feel the connection.
All in all the sushi is top notch and I think it is a great place. -

After following him to three different locations over 15 years, I finally have said "good bye" to my regular visits to Aki-San... but only because I moved out of the area. Imagine loving the sushi prepared by someone so much that you visit two or three times a month for 15 years. Now do the math! YES! That's how good Aki-San is.
I'll leave you to review the other Reviewers. For me to review in depth would be like a son talking about his mother's down home cooking. Do yourself a favor and visit Aki. -

This is my goto casual sushi in LB ( the other is kinoya, but aki wins due to price and location)
I stick with the fresh sashimi and sushi, cant speak to the fusion rolls.
Aki san is a nice humble dude who slangs some fine tasting fresh slabs of fish.
Go there, sit at the bar, and get served.
