Phenomenal sushi!
I was weary of celebrating a belated birthday dinner here based on the recent reviews, but not being from the area, it came highly recommended by a friend, and it sure didn't disappoint. I made reservations about a week and a half before and even had to call a couple days before to push the reservations for 6 from 7pm to 7:30 and they were very accommodating.
Akios is sort of like a "diamond in the rough" hidden amongst several shops, between a beauty salon or supply store and a clothing store if I recall correctly. Inside you'll find very simple decor; welcoming and reminiscent of sushi restaurants in Japan, albeit quite roomier. It was a full house when we got there (this past Friday). Service was prompt and very friendly. We started dinner with a large hot sake and decided to split several of the large special sushi platters - 1991, 1993, Yellowtail Special, New Salmon Special, and the Salmon Half & Half. We also ordered a couple of the chicken skewer appetizers and a Rainbow Roll. A couple people ordered other things - tempura, Crunchy Roll, green tea, miso soup.
The cuts of fish were extremely generous (given the price of the platters that range $15-$20) and fresh! The yellowtail especially melted in your mouth. The seared scallops from the 1993 were perfectly cooked and seasoned; no need to dip in the ponzu or butter sauce. The New Salmon Special Rolls were so huge that it was difficult to get it in your mouth cleanly in one shot and oh so yummy. Everything we ordered with the exception of the chicken skewers which were a little dry, were absolutely delicious.
After more sake, my friend bought me a glass of plum wine; great sipping wine that reminds me of gummy bears and accompanied the free scoop of green tea ice cream for my birthday. I had it in my mind it would be something like what dried salted plums would taste like. They sang and even had a tambourine!
This place isn't cheap and the fact that the special sushi platter menu doesn't have prices should be an indication, but it was worth every penny, not that I paid, but I would gladly put a dent in my wallet for their sushi and make the drive to TO.
Maybe we got lucky, but I doubt an establishment such as this would not have been in business so long if their fish made people sick consistently or if their sushi wasn't fresh. Tons of mayo based sauces or teriyaki sauce on a sushi roll isn't the real deal and you won't find that here. It was a nice change to have Japanese food prepared by Japanese people; not to say that other folks can't make good Japanese food, but this is authentic. -

Camarillo, CA
Came out here from Camarillo wanting to try something different. Loved it! Catapiller roll was so delicious along with my favorite side, spicey tuna hand roll. I had wanted to do Mexican since it was cinco de mayo making a margarita most appropriate for the occasion. Lucky me they also served margarita which where delicious! Love the location for stone colds desert afterwards :-)

I totally misjudged this place. I came here recently with a friend and the food was so good. Maybe last time I went I just happened to get something that wasn't great but this time I went my veggie roll was delicious. I am not a huge fan of their teryaki sauce but that was the only complaint that I had.

Los Angeles, CA
Two words: comfort food.
I first ate at Akio's when I was 15 years old. 10 years later and I still love this place!
Akio's has a strange but welcoming vibe. The head hancho (the guy who usually mans the desk up front) seems like a stern gentleman, but in fact he really devotes himself to great and fast customer service. The sushi chefs are cheerful and make the sushi bar a fun experience. Though Akio's can get pretty packed on weekends, the amount of people never bother me. The crowd is mostly families having a great time-- and this cheerful vibe makes eating at Akio's a wonderful time.
Now to the food part! Akio's is really generous with portions and I think their combos are great deals. Combos mostly come with miso soup, a delicious green salad, a good portion of rice, and whatever delicious entree you order. I usually get the Goban combo because I love sashimi. All of the combos have a little bit of everything, and it's easy to pair up your fav Japanese foods instead of ordering separate costly dishes like other sushi places.
Eat here. Relive the good times family experience when you were an awkward 15 year old. You won't feel awkward anymore once you eat the delicious food. -
Review from Karen R.
Although Sushi is in their name, they are some what traditional in their menu options. I was surprised they didn't have any "specialities" or designer rolls or sushi items they had come up with to be "signature" items. They were very limited on their sashimi options, having only the platter of sashimi available that was 7 pieces for $17 which I thought was high. They were happy to convert the sushi to sashimi for me and the avg price of their 2 pieces of sushi was $4.50.
Their best value is the sushi combination if you like having 1 of many different types of sushi and one roll to share. Their spicy tuna roll was a bit different in that it had spicy chili sauce dollops on top of each cut piece of roll rather than the usual chopped tuna mixed with wasabi. The actual flavor of the pieces of tuna and yellow tail I had as my sashimi was quite good. I felt it was a little on the expensive side, but could just be what is expected for a sushi place located in a mall in this area of California. -

Decor is great. Service is great. But do I go places for nice decor and service? Methinksnot.
I'll be honest, I'll completely hit up this place if I'm craving some tempura or fried japanese snacks. however, sushi and sashimi are just mediocre.
i made the mistake of eating here one night after visiting my favorite-sushi-joint-in-the-world-that-i have-yet-to-review. frankly, biting into the tuna and octopus included with the goban made me a little sad. -

The only authentic Japanese restaurant in the Thousand Oaks area. I remember coming here as a kid and being scared of all the fish structures on the wall.
Make sure to take note of the abnormal opening hours. -

I've had better nigiri but it certainly was very fresh. The spicy tuna roll was okay. The seafood soup was good but they used a lot of imitation crab. Tempura veggies, gyoza and grilled shrimp on skewers were all good. I prefer head & legs on my shrimp, more flavorful & crunchy, but I can see how that might not go over too well with certain people. No heads or legs here. The service was excellent. The place was full of very happy regulars.
I wish them all the best and another great 30 years! -

Went here tonight for the first time. The service and sushi were mediocre at best. The one redeeming quality was the ginger.
Our waitress did not seem to want to answer our questions about the sushi. The menu just lists different sushis, but unlike most restaurants has no descriptions. She kept looking away and as soon as she would answer a question, she'd run off.
We ordered spicy tuna roll (regular tuna roll with Sriracha added), a cucumber/avocado salad (overpriced) and crunch rolls (shrimp tempura roll with extra panko crumbs). The crunch rolls were average; have had much better in the valley. They didn't even have fried onions on top. Ummm. Hello!
The most bizarre was their interpretation of a spicy tuna roll. It was just a tuna roll with hot sauce on top. I will not be back most likely. -
Review from amelia s.
When my husband and I visited Akio's recently, we were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. We ordered a chicken teriyaki dinner, edamame, sake, and a caterpillar roll. The food was good, and I was particularly impressed by the presentation of the caterpillar roll. The sushi chef fashioned the caterpillar's antennae out of herbs, and the it's eyes out of finely diced cubes of cucumber. It was super cute and creative. Overall, prices are fair, food is good, decor is nice, but service is a tad slow.

Castaic, CA
I started eating at Akio's in 1985 or 1986. I actually haven't been there for nearly 10 years, and was surprised to see it is still open and Akio is still serving! What I do remember about it, that I'm surprised no one has mentioned, are all the "secret" specials on the sushi bar menu... The #2, the #10, #12, #23... I think there were over 50 of them. And every once in a while, Akio would renumber them all, just to stop the regulars from falling into a rut. You would order a #10, and find that it was something different. You would say, "Hey Akio, I thought #10 was the garlic special!" and he would say, "No, that is the #12. #10 is the salmon skin special." So you would eat the #10, love it, and try the #12 next. And that's how you discovered new specials... until three months later when he changed it all up again.
The roll I remember the most though is the Dynamite Roll, which is completely different from the roll of the same name at any other sushi bar. This was about 3-4" across, and you would order it with "green fish" -- wasabi rolled right into the roll. And then Akio would tell you "dip both sides" into the hot sauce, and it would just about blow your brains out!
Can anyone send me a message and tell me if those dishes are still on the menu? I'll be in town for the Amgen Tour this weekend, and would like to stop by and relive old times. -

OK Yelpers, you guys are killing me on this one! I am giving this sushi place it's average rating because I do not want to help\hurt it's rating since I have not eaten here.
I drove all the way to TO to meet a girlfriend for dinner at Akio's only to find that IT IS CLOSED ON MONDAYS!!! This would have been great information to have ahead of time. Hopefully this yelp will save someone time and gas money!
**I plan to check this place out in the near future and I'll update my rating based on that visit!** -

I don't eat sushi so why on earth am I writing a review on a Japanese restaurant whose specialty is sushi? When I lived in CA, my sushi-loving friends first brought me here. I fell in love with the American-created California roll: susi rice with crab and avocado nestled in the middle all wrapped up in seaweed. While that doesn't sound that appetizing they are amazingly delicious. Although I never experimented outside my area of comfort (I did have some raw tuna at one point) everything I did eat here was fantastic. Their simple starter salads are served in a chilled bowl (why don't more restaurants do this?) and the salad greens are absolutely fresh and crisply; tossed in are some slivered carrots, and it's all topped with a spicy ginger dressing. The miso soup is marvelous with only a slight hint of fish flavor. I sampled most of the number specials and they were all delicious.
The service here is polite beyond belief. As is typical in Japanese culture, the cooks are loud and funny. The female waitresses are amazingly polite and gracious.
Aside from one visit where my friend almost choked on her tuna roll, I never had a bad experience at Akio's. I miss their food tremendously. There's no place like them in New England. -

Camarillo, CA
Once upon a time, way back in the 70's , Sushi Bars were an alternative to real bars- and the scene was also a singles meet kind of thing at the actual "bar" Part. The sushi master reigned supreme, and often for his regulars would create a "special " dish that became ingrained in the operation, yet did not appear on the menu. Akio , the owner and sushi master, did this as well. Now, these special items are an open secret, and appear on their own special menu.
I mention this because as far as I'm concerned, everything you could possibly want in a "special" sushi item can be found on Akio's Special Menu. Crave two kinds of tuna, fresh and unadorned, big slabs of gorgeous fresh Tuna? Maguro and Ahi? Order the Tuna Special. How about a cooked roll? Try the Part 1. I crave these things. Sliced roll with salmon, crab and tuna, cut and lightly fried golden . There's others as well. If you go , sit at the bar for the really special things although they graciously serve at the table as well. The rest of the fare is great- one time I had Japanese style teriyaki and yakitori.
Best of all, and this is important in these days of corporate owned chains, this place is local family owned, and they work hard to keep it consistent and good. Keep your money circulating in Thousand Oaks, it's good for everyone. By the way, many of the staff speak very little english so if you want answers, sit at the Sushi Bar and talk to Akio. Simi Valley, CA
This place is packed at dinner time. Don't come here with an empty stomach. Their rolls are appetizer size, not dinner size. You get the eqivalent of a small handroll in a cut roll. It'll take at least two orders of something to get you full. The prices are much too expensive for what you actually get.
I've gotten upset stomach every time I've come here, and after multiple tries, I've decided to permanently cross this place off my list. -

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. Sat at the sushi bar, right in front of the owner (Akio), who has apparently been running the joint for the past 30 years of so. I've been back one other time, and it was just as good. I'm hopeful things stay that way.

Agoura Hills, CA
We're a bit confused as to why this place gets such good reviews. We visited last night, and were very underwhelmed. First, we waited a long time for a waiter, and then even longer for our food. Second, the sushi was fresh but bland, with the sushi rice being so sticky it tasted stale--and yet, somehow, the rolls still didn't stay together. And the beef teriyaki had a sauce that tasted like it came from a bottle.
If you want a really good sushi and Japanese experience, drive a few miles to Agoura and try Sushi and Wasabi. -

Akio's has been our favorite since the 90's. Ask for the tuna collar! Akio will give your kids a wrapped toy if they color him a paper placemat. The dynamite rolls are the best!!!

4 stars for being a fun place.
It's old school California Sushi. The chef is loud and crazy, the food is not the best in the area, but it is good. I think Akios claim to fame is that it is the first Japanese restaurant in the conejo valley.
I like to go here about once a year, just to KIT. -

San Diego, CA
My family loves Akio's. This is pretty much the only sushi restaurant that my parents will go to. The waitresses are sweet and recognize us due to our regular visits. The special sushi menu is the menu to order off of but beware, each sushi plate is ~$ 20 bucks and there are no prices on the actual menu. I learned this the hard way when my then boyfriend and I decided to go for lunch and ended up being shocked with an $80 bill. Their fish is very fresh. Get the salmon half & half, but get it all raw -- a slice of salmon wrapped around a slice of avocado is oh so fresh and so clean.
If you plan on going on a Fri or Sat night, make a reservation! -

Los Angeles, CA
I like this place. The food is always fresh, and they do it just about right--esp. the maki (cut rolls)--there is just a normal amount of rice, not too much, like some places give you. I dont know why they put a giant bell pepper ring in with our tempura, but that would be my only complaint. Other than that, its good, and take out is great, too.
I dont think there are a lot of GOOD sushi places in the Conejo Valley, but I think Akio's does a good job with it, so we will be back!Listed in: regular places

Akio is a funny guy, with his gruff voice and Elvis hairstyle. And man, the food is hard to beat. It's a family place, as evidenced by all the kids' artwork adorning the walls. I like all the fish "statues" on the wall too, especially the coelacanth. Now that's something you don't see every day!
If you're doing the low - carb thing, this place is for you. Lots of unusual and tasty items sans rice. Big menu here. The fish is quality and the presentation appealing.
Service is prompt and attentive.
The beer is cold. Good selection of sakes, too.
And if you are one of those self - proclaimed "sushi snobs" and absolutely must try this place, be sure and ask for the coelacanth special. Or some other endangered species, like bluefin tuna. You must know that all of us "little people" are saving it just for you! -
Review from Bobby B.
Newbury Park, CA
There's many reasons that Akio's has survived here in the Conejo since the Janss mall days (1981).
Akio's is fun, friendly, and has excellent food. ANd yes, as one reviewer pointed out, being a popular and fun restaurant, it does get loud in there. So, don't go if you're an anti-social hermit looking for a boring and quiet dining experience.
I must say I have never eaten anything else but the sushi at the bar. Teppenyaki and such doesn't thrill me. But Akio's sushi and his ingredients are top grade. I've had pretty much everything on the sushi/sashimi menu there. The 1991 and 5 star special are fantastic. Sapporo sake bombs!
And the food out in Akio's store front windows is always fresh and never seems to spoil. How do they do that? -

A four means: I'll be comin' back.
Went here for lunch today and what was interesting about this place was the decor. Fishes covered practically every wall and wall divider in this restaurant. The most interesting fishes were the large plastic ones hanging on the wall. Very interesting indeed.
The food was good. I got one of the lunch plates (luncheon #1) and it only cost me $7. Especially since it came with soup, salad, gyoza, sunomono, chicken teriyaki (you could have gotten the beef if you wanted for a dollar more), rice, and vegetable and shrimp tempura.
The service was good as well -- everything was quick. We got seated quickly, our order was taken quickly, the food came quickly, the check came quickly, and the clean-up was also quick. This makes it really nice for lunch when you have to get in and get out in an hour.
Next time I'm coming back for some sushi :) -

I have been going to Akio's for over 20 years. Akio makes the best salmon skin cut rolls ever, they are just divine. Love his spicy tuna as well. Kids can color their place mat then present it to Akio himself for a special prize. When it's busy, it can take a while for your food, but you can order drinks and edamame and other treats. I love Akio's!

Los Angeles, CA
Growing up in Thousand Oaks I'm very familiar with Akio's. They remain THE ONLY (that I've visited and am aware of) Japanese restaurant owned, run and staffed with Japanese people. That might seem like an odd comment but it's such a rarity!
That aside it's not THE best Japanese food but it's pretty great. My mom and I usually go there for lunch, where I normally get the Charbroiled Salmon combo with tempura. It comes with a nice piece of charbroiled salmon, a fried gyoza and mixed tempura. The meal starts with their yummy soup and salad. It's not a miso soup, but a yummy clear broth with a pinch of noodles. I can't quite pinpoint the exact flavor but it's delish! Then they also serve this crisp iceberg lettuce salad. I have yet to find anywhere else that serves lettuce this crisp (almost like a potato chip!) and the miso dressing is Y-U-M! Not too sweet not to tart, just right, I love it!
Last night we did take out for dinner and I stuck with my usual- charbroiled salmon dinner w/ tempura. Aside from everything you get for the lunch combo they add an additional piece of salmon, a chicken kushiage skewer and two gyoza. I know I should venture and try other items but I realllly love the way they grill the salmon! We also ordered the PT.1 from the sushi menu. I was surprised no one else mentioned this on other reviews, of course it could just be something that I absolutely LOVE! The PT. 1 is a roll filled with imitation crab (not my favorite, but eh, what can you do) and scallop. But that's not where it ends, they then dip it in what I assume is a butter/shoyu sauce and then sear it. YUUUUUMMMM! The rice gets this crisp sweet "crust" and it's served with a butter/shoyu sauce. I crave this sometimes! So DELICIOUS!!!
Also to note they serve charbroiled salmon collar. Yes this is still salmon, but it's so good, and a bit of a different taste to it. It's a bit saltier than the regular salmon but a bit rare to find especially for Thousand Oaks!
Love this place!Listed in: Top Restaurants

This place is great. Very authentic Japanese restaurant. The owners and chefs are Japanese. I know. It is amazing.
I have been coming to this place for over 10 years.
If you really like sushi, ask for the special menu. Otherwise, you will be given the standard menu that does not have the truly great sushi dishes. -

I've gone there three times over the years. Service has been HORRIBLE every time. The last two times we waited so long for a server to come over we left before even getting water. Back in the day this place was good. Sushi selection was mediocre compared to any surrounding sushi bars. Save your $ and go Bada sushi or Cho Cho san.

My cousin's kiddies call this the "fish place.."
That's cuz there are lots of fish statues all around the restaurant..
There's another Japanese place they call the "cat place" because of all the cat figurines.. but that's another yelp review..
Anyway.. I've been coming here for years.. since my cousin moved to Thousand Oaks.. the food is always good here and the portions are filling.
Of course, I had their udon.. the broth was so yummy.. I loved it!
The great thing for kids is.. you draw a picture.. take it up to the sushi bar.. and the kids get a little treat.. my cousin's kiddos got that routine down solid!
It a great family place to go and eat.. there's a lot of selections on the menu.. so you can go several times and try some different combination each time.
It's highly recommended.. go to the "fish place!" -

Been going to Akios since 1980. Simply the best Sushi at great prices. Akio always has fun with the kids and the restaurant has drawings from the kids hanging on the walls. The crew at Akio's has been with him forever and together they provide excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere. We we think sushi, Akio's is always first on our list!

First time trying Akio's. I ordered Luncheon No. 10 for takeout, which is the chicken teriyaki with California roll. It came with salad, miso soup, rice, sunomono, and edamame, all for $7.25. All I can say is, you get what you pay for.
The 4 pieces of California roll were okay. The imitation crab was shredded instead of chopped and mixed with the mayonnaise. I prefer the latter, but no big deal.
The chicken teriyaki was terrible. It looked like plain grilled chicken breast that had been diced, reheated, and then covered in teriyaki sauce. You could tell because there were some pieces that had no sauce on them, so it was just plain chicken. The least they could do was put the sauce on the chicken before they cooked it. I suspect they didn't do that because they cooked the chicken beforehand and just reheated it. This was also the first time I had chicken teriyaki cut into chunks instead of strips, and using breast meat instead of thigh. I did not care for it at all. The meat was kind of dry, which is weird considering that it's sitting in a pool of sauce.
The miso soup was good. Not much to complain about.
The sunomono was pretty bad. I prefer the cucumber thinly sliced and marinated in the tangy sauce. This version had thicker slices and no flavor. I suspect they just added the sauce right before serving, so the cucumbers didn't have a chance to soak up the flavor. I ate a few pieces and tossed the rest.
If the best thing about the meal was the bright green edamame, then you know the food was pretty bad. Maybe they were having an off day, or maybe it was because I ordered the food for pickup. Either way, I'm not coming here again. -

Best place for sushi, the fishes are fresh. Even if you do not like sushi, their cook food, especially dinner is also excellent. The only draw back is the price. They are a little bit on the high price. Some of the waitress do not speak English, it it hard to understand them some times. I like the albacore, it is like 'chocolate melting in your mouth'.
