Anne K and I ended up dropping by here for a bite after one of the last YEE's.

The space is really tiny, but they served pretty good sushi. Their wait staff is on the slower side (read serves like they're exhuasted) and sadly our drinks had to be requested a couple times before they were brought out.

The only real negatives for me were that the chef doesn't hand stuff to you, thus food somtimes sits there for a bit when you could be eating it and it's generally pretty hard to move around if you're at the bar.

I'd come back and try it again though.

Fish isn't as fresh as the Bush location.

Salmon special roll: I thought it was ok. The roll was butchered in all odd shapes but whatever.

Caterpillar: Typical. You can't really go wrong with heating up already made unagi and slapping it together with avocado and rice right?

10 piece sushi lunch: This came with 2 salmon, 1 tai, 2 hamachi, 1 maguro and 6 pieces of spicy tuna. Mmm is my math off? That's more than 10 pieces. Oh well. Salmon was fresh, sweet and a large cut, the tai and maguro were ok but the hamachi was fresh and buttery. Spicy tuna, again, typical.

    Miso: $2? Ripoff.

Side note: They give you a little dish of free pickled cabbage. It's good. Eat it. Oh and this place is TINY. Like super hole in the wall.

The closest sushi joint to my office, I'm not at all perturbed by the cutesie size of this restaurant. The servers are always nice, and the food is a-ok!

I always order the lunch combo: 8 pieces assorted sushi, miso soup, salad, and free hot tea. It's a very light but satisfying meal, and the fish is always fresh. I end up paying $11-$13 total for my meal, which is pretty decent given that I'm at Union Square.

The ambiance is awesome, with a window facing the street and natural light that makes you feel quite relaxed. I bring my book here for lunch, and sometimes stay for an extended amount of time just because of how homey it feels (unless there are incoming guests waiting for a table, of course).

Definitely dependable for fresh fish and simple sushi. I have yet to try any special rolls here, but I presume they're just as great.

    Bottom Line:

A great sushi bar if you're eating alone on a lunch break from work. But, if you're with a big group of people, perhaps try Sushi Toni that's about a block and a half northeast of there.

When I first walked into Akiko's I was surprised by how small the space was -- the restaurant had at most 15 seats, four tables. The staff seemed to consist of one sushi chef, the hostess/cashier/waitress, and one kitchen chef.

When I arrived with my friend late on a Friday night (around 9pm), they had run out of spicy tuna and closed their main kitchen, meaning we could only order sushi. By the time we had finished our meal, the restaurant had run out of everything except for salmon.

We ordered the Philadelphia combo (16-piece) and San Francisco roll (14-piece), and were served salmon in each instead of tuna. The touch of smoked salmon in the Philadelphia roll made it my favorite of the night, although both orders were tasty. I was also pleased with the complementary tea, mini-salad, and miso soup, all of which were pleasantly mild but still flavorful. Overall, the meal was nice, but not spectacular.

My friend and I evenly split the bill, which came out to $11.15 each without tip -- not bad considering we were hunting for a place to eat around Union Square so late at night. We were both full after we left the restaurant.

We actually came here by mistake. Our reservation was for Akiko restaurant, but we walked into the wrong akiko! Who knew there are two restaurants both named Akiko within two blocks of each other?

We bit the bullet and ordered the  lizzy roll (avocado & salmon), double star roll (cucumber, avocado and unagi topped with hamachi and tuna), seaweed salad, eggplant and sashimi sampler. The food was pretty good. The fish tasted fresh and the sushi was decent sized.

The place is TINY. I think it only seats around 10. We probably saved ourselves $30 eating here. Not a bad little neighborhood place.

Strolled in for a beer and some late lunch sushi around 130 with an uncle. He's vegetarian and said there were plenty of options for him, so with a shrug I agreed.

This place is tiny. The size of a closet tiny. There's maybe space for 15 people in this place and one table basically keeps the doorway hard to get to (maybe a fire code violation.)

The service was ok, we didn't see any open tables and we were about to leave and the waiter was attune with who was ready to go and said that we'd have a table almost immediately.

After being seated we were brought hot tea and then asked promptly if we wanted something to drink. Maybe it was the fact the place was small but the waiter was on point. We ordered a large Sapporo to split, and for five dollars we each got almost a full beer to drink.

On to the food: it was fresh but not memorable. Cheap but not too cheap.

Service was snappy until we wanted the check.

I bet there are much better places to eat at in SF but if you wander by, the place has some open tables pop in. As long as you don't expect the best, you won't be sad because it won't be your worst.

We found this place after a day of walking around the mall and it's literally a hole in the wall! It seriously looks like it used to be someone's tiny SF living room.

It was SO HOT in there, there was no ventilation AT ALL. It felt like a sauna and I just wanted to leave but I was so hungry...

The food was good, we got the vegetarian combo and the sushi combo. Both were good and the sushi was fresh. Nothing too memorable however, so we probably won't be coming back especially since we're Oakland dwellers and there's great sushi on this side of the Bay!

I used to come here when I worked in the area. It's a really small restaurant (everyone can basically hear your entire convo lol), but they have some pretty good sushi =) The ladies working here are super nice and the rolls are awesome and reasonably priced! I think I would order take out from here for sure!

This is not a roll review.

Akiko's sushi counter should be revoked. If you are craving authentic sushi, please pass. I came in to discover Akikos level of knowledge, unfortunately they had less than none.

I ordered a piece of nigiri, whatever was freshest - this is a great way to test the waters because you get to observe quality of rice, freshness & cut of fish . I was brought a trough of horse slop - literally 10 pieces of the most ugly, brutalized fish I've ever seen. The cuts would have been more precise if they were made by hurling the steaks into a ceiling fan. The waitress was surprised that I didn't try a thing - and still charged me 20$. Look at my pics but I warn you if you really care for Japanese cuisine then you might be offended.

No wonder I was the only customer...

Literally a hole in the wall but decent and not overpriced for where it is. But if you're a claustrophobic then I don't recommend because place is small. If you're a foodie who's willing to try new food then it's worth a try.

Every sushi house has to have a few house dishes that makes them stand out from others and this place is no exception. Had this sushi plate that looked almost egg rollish but was spicy tuna tartar on a bed of greens with a balsamic vinegaritte. Thats the one dish I remember vividly.

Don't get me wrong though the other rolls we had were worth it too to go and try out. Try out stuff that you've never seen at other places' menus. Yes it may not be good but what if its out of this world? You could have missed out.

Definite recommend this place as a lunch outing,

    Worst Sushi Bar is SF!
I work by this place  and decided to try out one day.  The place itself looks pretty kool and friendly, but that's where it stops.
First of all, the service was SLOW!  I went during lunch and the place was busy, and they only had 2 waiters.
I ordered the teriyaki beef, and the beef was undercooked and cold!  The rice was also cold!  I was shocked that they would serve the food like this.  This was the worst teriyaki beef I ever had.
But the worst part was the unagi nigiri!  The unagi should've been served warm, but it was also served cold and dry!  It was the most horrible nigiri ever.  I was so close to reporting them to the SF Health Department.  Yes, it really was that bad.
With SF being such a sushi mecca... do not go here!  Lastly, for the food they were serving, it was definitely overpriced.

    One word: Forgettable.

There are plenty of little pockets of delicious restaurants in SF that look like a hole in the wall but are really a treasure... this is really just a hole in the wall.

If you MUST stop to eat here, though, their eggplant appetizer is tasty, but there is nothing outstanding about this place. Keep walking and just about any other restaurant you'll walk into will have better food.

Hole in the wall place.  Took a chance.

Got the assorted sashimi set.  Borderline the worst sashimi i've ever had.  I guess that's why it's only $15.

I was there at 9pm on a wednesday, so maybe that was it.  But it seriously tasted pretty aweful...  sad times...

One of the places that make me wonder how they have a decent yelp review.  Or if their quality just went down after the first opened.

They have sushi on their happy hour menu, which no other places in the Union Square/Nob Hill area have (I've called the other places to ask). The sushi was decent. The restaurant is on the small side so this might not be a good place to bring a large group of people.

Ok...they're batting about .500 at best...the first time my wife and I went was at around 2PM and the place was empty, as it was after lunch hour, and they close from 3-5PM.

The food and service were pretty good, but, again, we were the only patrons.

I went back by myself this evening at around 6PM, and it was about 2/3 full.  I ordered a Rainbow roll, tuna roll and salmon skin hand roll.  I knew what I wanted, and ordered as soon as I sat down.  This is important, as will be made clear.

All arrived within a reasonable amount of time...except for the salmon skin hand roll.

A part y of two arrived 20 minutes after I did, and received their order rather quickly, including a salmon skin hand roll.

I asked where mine was, and the waitress said, "It's almost ready."  Fine.  Ten minutes later, I called her over and asked her where it was.

She said it takes 15 minutes to prepare.  Fine.

Five minutes later, I asked her where it was.  She said it's done, and I'll get it right now. Fine.

Five minutes after that, I told her to cancel it, as I was done with them...I suspect that my roll was given to the diners at the adjacent table, which I would have understood if she had just admitted the error (maybe the order wasn't put in...I don't know).

When I told her that I wanted to cancel the order, she said, "Can't you wait just another two or three minutes?" which was interesting, in that she had previously told me that it was done, and she was going to bring it to me.

Now I fully realize that she was not responsible for preparing the food, but it doesn't take a half hour to make a salmon skin hand roll, and I was so aggravated by the whole fiasco that my meal was ruined.

It was by no means sushi to die for, and the service and attention to detail were absolutely awful.

By the way, the waiter who took care of us when we first went there said that the sushi chef and cook are Chinese, not Japanese.

Akiko's Sushi Bar gives new meaning to the word "Meh."

Horrible.  We should have checked the ratings before we ate here.  The fish was not fresh, and the chef has definitely not been trained in the art of sashimi or sushi preparation.  It looked like he just took a hacksaw to the fish.  It didn't matter anyways, since the fish was inedible. Ironically, the only tasty portion of the meal was the (free) pickled cabbage.  Everything else was a health hazard. Luckily we ordered very little, and then ate at another restaurant.  Would not eat here again--apparently it is possible to find indecent cuisine in the city.

I'm always happy to pay for a great meal, definitely for sushi. So I specifically asked for a recommendation for a traditional sushi joint with great fish.

To be fair, it was Monday, so Akiko being open was a bad sign. But the menu was great, with a lot of interesting white fish from summer snapper to amber jack.

The biggest problem is probably the service. The service staff seemed... angry? I was alone, and asked to sit at the sushi bar. Once sat (15 min, even though there were two empty seats and infact, they sat me in one of them eventually), I had to wait 10 minutes and ask for a menu. Then, ask for the specials menu and drink menus, and when I only got one, I had to ask for the drink menu a third time. Nonetheless, the sushi chef, though busy, seemed to be skillful and friendly, and the menu was impressive.

The service continued to be horrible. This was consistent with those around me. My neighbors soy sauce was empty, and I reached to offer them mine only to realize it too, was empty. I had to flag down my waiter to order a drink. He was just rude... I had wanted to ask the sushi chef what fish he recommended, and he insisted, "I take all the orders". No prob, dude, but I'd still like to ask a question.

The sushi chef was incredibly nice and asked what I wanted, and as usual, I asked for omakase (whatever you suggest). He asked what I liked and didn't, I told him whatever he wanted and then I waited another 45 minutes. Everyone around me was served items, and I just waited. He routinely asked me what I liked, and I'd expect something to come, and nada. Then, suddenly, a plate full of fish arrived, about 12 pieces of fish, a relatively good assortment, including uni. But the presentation was really meh... I'm not expecting a lot, but a little garnish would be nice.  But that seems nitpicking because...

the fish itself wasn't good. The uni was actually gooey, meaning it was no longer good. It was melting on the plate. I didn't eat it. The salmon was good, but not cut right. He hadn't even cut the slices all the way through. Doing so with chopsticks is tough even for me. The yellowtail was good, but that was it. Everything else tasted tough, and a little off. It was like it was all frozen. The slices were entirely too thick, Sashimi should melt in your mouth. This was chewy.

The kitchen was cranking out typical sushi rolls and people seemed happy with them, so perhaps I was just asking too much. But, these things happen and the sushi chef was friendliy enough. then the bill arrived.

For one small plate of sashimi and a $15 sake, the bill was 68$. I'm thrilled to pay that much and more for a good meal, but this was not one of them. That number is obscene for 12 slices of fish.

    I paid, I smiled. I left.

The restaurant has no email address to contact them at. I'll call tomorrow to complain.

For some reason we had a hard time finding Akiko's walking over from the Angelic Pretty store down the street. Once we found it though, we felt stupid, even though it does seem like a tiny hole-in-the-wall at first glance!

The inside is a beautiful industrial modern little restaurant. We ordered way too much food, but the presentation was beautiful. The sushi was great, the udon was great, the tempura was great. All over, a great place! I'm sorry I'm not in SF more often, I'd definitely make this a regular stop.

Definitely the freshest tasting sushi in the city. Akiko's is a very small, clean and cozy restaurant with phenomenal food. My favorites are: spicy salmon maki (melts in your mouth) tuna tartar( topped with avocado and lemon, so delicious) albacore donburi (always excellent, and they don't mind substituting for other ingredients)
I come here every time I am in the union square area which is quite often and never get tired of this restaurant. They always serve the best tasting fruit after you finish your meal. I highly recommend Akiko's to everyone!!

Went here for lunch today, relatively good.

The place is really small - only 3 tables, 2 of which only seat 2, one which is basically part of the door itself.  However, traffic seemed pretty light for lunch hour, and most patrons seemed to be there for pickup.

Our waiter was very friendly, and had a good rapport with the sushi chef, they kept things lively with customers while remaining polite and giving me and my girlfriend time to ourselves.

Orders came with a free cabbage + furikake (seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar, salt) salad, which was a nice touch.  The waiter was very attentive and offered us extra miso soup to go with our dishes.

Food was relatively authentic - the vegetable udon was light on salt and had a decent amount of actual substance, which is better than most.  Noodles were typical, but that's neither a good thing or a bad thing.  I'd recommend katanaya if you are looking for better noodles.  My tekka-don (tuna sashimi over rice) was quite good.  This is one of the few places that has served me proper sushi rice with my sashimi donburis, as opposed to most who will serve you normal hot rice (you should only get that with chicken and eel).

Price was decent for the area, but more than I would have paid for this food at a "great price" restaurant.

Certainly a good place for a quick, quiet lunch.

Small place but big on hospitality (the restaurant only has 3 tables)!

I highly recommend the Sumo Roll (tuna and shrimp) for $11.00.  It was served with a smokey sauce with green onions and sesame oil.  Both my friend and I loved how innovative and tasty the roll was.

In fact, we were so pleased with the Sumo Roll that we gobbled it up in record time and wanted to try another.  After indicating our preference for raw fish, non-fried sushi, and surprises, the waiter brought a Rainbow Roll to the table.  Sadly this surprise was disappointing!  In fact it was so mediocre, I had time to practice my photography skills (see attached photo).

Furthermore, the seafood udon ($10.50) was bland...  hence the photography practice continued...

Free cabbage salad at the start of your meal and free sliced oranges at the end?  Surprise!  I liked this surprise... so no photos.  You get my drift?

So this sushi restaurant is only half a block away from the JW Marriott, where I was staying, so I decided to give it a try. This is definitely a hole in the wall, so seating is very limited. I sat at the bar because I figured I didn't want to take up one of the four tables in the place. I ordered salmon and albacore sushi and a spider roll. The salmon was ok but the albacore tasted so weird. I'm not sure if it was due to the sushi not being fresh but it left a bad taste in my mouth. The spider roll was just ok, nothing special. I was really hoping the sushi would be great but I was disappointed. The service was just ok as well. I noticed someone from the kitchen staring at me strangely. I don't know what that was about... I would say, skip this place... The prices were fine but I'm sure there are better places in SF.

This is a great little find.

The sake sashimi was a nice cut of fish, and served at the proper temperature. Declicious!

The Volcano roll was not on the menu as others mentioned, but in its place I strongly recommend the Doublestar Roll (Snowcrab & B.B.Q. Eel, avocado topped with 3 slices of maguro, 3 slices of hamachi).

If you're looking for something a bit off the beaten path, but near The Square, this should definitely peak your interest. The food is even so good that it's worth making this a destination location.

Only drawback is the size of the place with only 4 tables, but no need to be shy. Share a table with someone. Part of its charm is the size too.

At akikos...the place is incredibly small..it seats 16 people. The server was very nice when I entered..all tables were filled and she asked me to please wait since someone was paying and about to leave.

It was Sunday after 830, which is a happy hour time for this place. I ordered the 3 dollar seaweed salad and 2.50 house saki. The seaweed salad was a good portion and tasty. I've been some places where its a little slimy but this was very fresh!

I tried the lizzy roll with cucumber and asparagus and a 16 piece roll came out!   Wowza! the lemon made it really fresh and tasty.  Tea came with the meal hot and yummy.

I thought it quaint and the service was great.  As a solitary traveler, I felt at home eating good food and reading  and people watching.  I'd go there again when I go back to my conference in San Fran!

    Cheap, Great Food, Tiny Place

I've probably been to Akikos 20 or 30 times now so I thought I should write a review. In some ways I want to lie and say i's awful so that this tiny establishment doesn't fill up with yelpers. Oh well...

I may be somewhat biased when it come to Akikos since I literally live 30 seconds away. Regardless though I've been to a quite a few other Sushi Bars and they are never as good as Akikos.

You really can't beat the prices, or the happy hour deals. $2.50 beers & Saki!? Edamame is $2.50 I think too.

Here is how my meal usually plays out...

    Hot Tea (free!)
    Small cabbage salad (free!)
Beer and/or Saki ($2.50 happy hour special)
Maki Roll - I usually get something basic like Spicy Tuna or Salmon, I had the Lizzy roll recently and really liked it too. Prices start around $6 & go up from there for 8 pieces.
Free Sliced fruit (I've had orange, apple, pear, watermelon)

Sometimes I think they run out of the cabbage salad or the fruit at the end, no big deal though.

All in all this is a great place to check out. Because of the small size it's definitely better for smaller groups (5 people tops) & best for 1 or 2 people.

Oh, I love this place SO MUCH! The rolls are ALWAYS fresh, the room is cozy, the waitress makes you feel warm and welcomed every time you walk in through their door, the prices are below any of the sushi places on Union Square. The team works so efficiently, you don't even notice the gap between the time you've ordered and the sushi being brought to you. I have never felt more comfortable and taken care of in a right and respectful way, than in this place. Good job, keep it up, guys! P.S. Thank you for the spicy salmon roll last time!

Absolute best sushi I've ever had and at great prices.  The sumo roll is fantastic.  You get extras with your sushi too, like a little salad and some fruit for dessert.

And like everyone says, the place is tiny, tinier than you're picturing.

They have the absolute BIGGEST sushi rolls I have ever encountered! HUGE. Do not plan on being able to stuff your face with more than one roll unless you are sharing (which, thankfully, I did).

We had the 49ers Roll, the Philadelphia Roll, and the Sweet Potato Roll in addition to some Miso Soup. While the soup was nothing to write home about (Miso Soup rarely is), the 49ers roll was splendid!

The Philadelphia Roll (Salmon, Cream Cheese, Cucumber) was excellent-- one of the best I've had (and it's my go-to roll), with some of the creamiest cream cheese around and a generous portion of salmon.

The 49ers roll was a California roll with Spicy Tuna and Caviar on top, and it was freakin' magnificent. Excellent texture, taste-- EVERYTHING. This sushi made me wish that my stomach was bigger so I could eat MOAR.

I didn't eat the sweet potato roll, but mom assures me that it was delicious. Let me tell you, if the other rolls were big, this puppy was big-ER. Took mom too bites to shovel it into her mouth, but she assured me that it was worth it.

All in all, a pretty great place for a random find!

The small, intimate setting of Akiko's makes it suitable for a romantic dinner out -- couple that with it's affordable prices and it's deliciously fresh sushi and you may have found the perfect spot for a romantic dinner out.

Now, I am in no way a sushi expert. I'm more then happy chowing down on a roll or two of spicy tuna roll from Safeway -- so when my girlfriend brought me here I let her take full control of what we ordered. Their Sumo Roll was to die for. I'd always added squeezed lemon to my sushi, but the incorporation of fresh lemon and garlic was heavenly. In fact, my least favorite roll was the spicy tuna roll she ordered to satiate my sushi cravings.

    I will definitely be returning.

TL;DR -- Amazing Happy Hour deals, fresh fish, delicious sushi, and intimate setting. KInd of everything one looks for in a sushi restaurant. Side note: this place has no ice -- whatsoever.

Stopped in for lunch before heading out of town. The joint is super tiny, but the sushi was amazing. The San Francisco Maki roll was ridiculously good...and after overspending at a lot of of other places, I couldn't believe how cheap the bill was.

    I'll go back for sure

Really good, inexpensive sushi. The sushi combo is a great deal, can't beat the prices. Daily happy hour specials are also a BIG plus (Cheap sake, beer and snack specials).

Only downside is that our server wasn't very attentive and the place is tiny so getting a table can sometimes be an issue, but overall food is good and really inexpensive!
