Richmond, VA
Best sushi in Richmond. Akida is a total hole in the wall place and super small. I have been going there for almost 10 years and have never had a less than amazing meal. The fish is always fresh and the rolls are well made. They now even have the "trendy" rolls for those who don't like traditional sushi. A must try in Richmond.
Note: be careful about parking in the Bank of America lot (there are tons of signs saying don't park there); they will ticket and tow.

Found this place while roaming around downtown Richmond. The location isn't the greatest and I was a bit hesitant to go inside but boy was I impressed. Authentic, yummy food at a decent price.
It's a bit small inside so try to go during off-peak hours if you can.
Crunchy, spicy salmon is excellent as is the edamame and philly roll. -

Akida is definitely my fave sushi place in Richmond! I generally judge my sushi experience on the spicy tuna roll - and this spicy tuna roll does not disappoint! The seafoood always tastes fresh and I just love all of the servers there! They are all very attentive and sweet and the food always comes out super quick!
Also, they have tons of really creative, delicious rolls - I try a different one every time I go and they are all super tasty!
If you don't love this sushi - you can totally blame me, but I'm positive you will love it!!!! -
Review from Jamie D.
Oh, Akida. Such a hole in the wall- and such a good one at that. It's tiny and looks pretty sketchy from the outside, but if you can get over the lackluster exterior, it's totally worth it. The fish is always fresh and the servers couldn't be friendlier. I've been noshing on raw fish here for a few years now, and I've never been disappointed. It's not as pricy as my favorite Richmond sushi spot, and it's a lot closer to my abode so it's a stellar choice when I'm really craving edamame and salmon (which is quite often).
The seating is limited, so on weekends you sometimes have to wait but isn't that the case with most in-demand restaurants? On my most recent visit, I grubbed on an Alaskan roll, salmon sashimi, and edamame. I must say, the seaweed paper was a little on the chewy side- I chewed and chewed and then chewed some more before I broke it down enough to swallow it. BUT, this isn't normally the case and Akida has done me right so many times that I can't dock 'em for this one little mishap. And even though the seaweed paper was subpar, the salmon was so fresh and the thickness of the sashimi was perfect. Nothing's worse than getting cuts of thin, flimsy, and just plain sad sashimi.... and Akida has proven time and time again that they know how to serve solid salmon sashimi.
Thank you, Akida, for consistently providing me with scrumptious sushi and super sweet servers! -

Cozy casual.
It is a hole in the wall because it's so small and one wouldn't expect to find a japanese restaurant on this street but it's clean and the service was good.
They had a special combo for about $17.00 which includes an appetizer, soup or salad, a regular roll (6-8 pcs) and a special roll (6-8 pcs) which I think is a good deal.
The salad dressing is the usual japanese dresing of grated ginger and carrots which is an all time favorite of mine.
I was disappointed that the unagi roll didn't have enough unagi on it.
I barely tasted it!
Overall, I still recommend this place since the rest of what we ordered was good, the wait time for the food isn't long once seated. -
Review from Lisa N.
Akida has authentic sushi and is probably the best you can get in Richmond. You can actually watch the sushi chefs make your order if you sit at the bar. I've been here twice and both times, I left full and satisfied. I ordered the philadelphia hand roll (standard), spider roll (good), and salmon sashimi ($2.50/piece which is pretty pricey). Minuses include the small restaurant, long waits during dinner time, and parallel street parking.

Don't expect a huge place with gorgeous decor... this literally is a hole in the wall. We drove by and the outside doesn't look that great but we gave it a shot anyways. The place has about 7 tables plus a few chairs around the sushi bar. They have a combo menu which for the price is not that bad... for about $18 you can get a salad, appetizer and two orders of rolls. We ordered the Robinson roll and spicy shrimp roll, both were good. The salad dressing was sesame dressing which we loved! The service was good and the food was quickly prepared. We will definitely go back!

Akida is my go-to spot for sushi when in my neck of the woods (Northside). Though there are a of lot great choices around Richmond, good options are sparce near downtown & the fan. The sushi there is always fresh and they have a lot of rolls that are full of fish but are really cheap for what they are (i.e. the triple roll). Like many other shoebox restaurants in the area, seating is limited. So it's not great for big groups - 4 or less is best. If you get there by 7, you're less likely to wait. If you have to wait, there is not much space to stand and the outside ambiance leaves something to be desired (read: sketchy). One of my favorite parts? There are few places in Richmond with a nicer wait staff. Also - if you call for takeout, add 10-15 minutes to how long they say it will take or you will definitely wait!

Oh, it's all right. I would give it five stars for a cozy, enjoyable atmosphere and two stars for the food. If you like the the sort of sushi with names like 'crazy dragon roll' or 'spicy girl roll' (note: these are actual names--however 'girl roll' not actually made out of girl), then I'm sure you won't be particularly upset with Akida, but if you prefer fresh and simple nigiri, then I wouldn't bother. I know that Richmond isn't the Bay Area--so, expectations checked, Akida is essentially what one would expect from a sushi restaurant in the center of Virginia.
The miso was good enough, but the complimentary salad was bizarre and a little bit unsettling... Why would I need a tiny little cup of iceberg lettuce and an unidentifiable salad dressing with my sushi? Is this something they usually do in Japan? Certainly I'm no expert in the culture, but I felt a little bit like I was at Olive Garden. My unagi-don was similarly unsettling--there was an awfully uneven ratio of white rice to the actual unagi, and the unagi itself, while not so bad that I couldn't eat most of it, was bland, uninspired, and full of little bones or cartilage.
What was so upsetting about my Akida experience is that the restaurant itself is so lovely! It has a very quaint but pleasant ambiance, with dark wood everywhere and a nice little sushi bar to sit at--I would have loved to come here often to have a drink and wind down at the end of the day, but I couldn't justify spending the money on such dull food. I might come back for some tea and soup just so that I can relax at the bar. -

Small, might have to wait to sit. So amazingly yummy. Crispy roll was melt in your mouth!
I really like the chopsticks! (they aren't disposable, they're nice) The sushi bar is a big tree, it is pretty fun to eat at :) -

My favorite sushi spot in the fan. Beats Sticky Rice or Carytown Sushi any day. Me and my college roommate discovered Akida randomly while in the Old Navy dressing room. We were discussing getting sushi for lunch and one of the employees suggested it. My sushi standard was from then on changed for ever. It is the best little whole in the wall, with about 10 tables max. The sushi is always fresh, their spicy mayo is the best I've ever had, and the salad dressing is amazing. I stopped going for a few months due to lack of money, but recently have discovered they have a special for $18 bucks that includes an app, two rolls, soup or salad. What a deal!

My rating of Akida is the same, but I wanted to say that I have been back to Momotaro (I spelled it wrong in my first review when making comparisons) and I now think that Momotaro is better sushi than Akida. I will keep going to both of them though.

I wanted so badly to like this place.
I'm currently looking for Richmond alternatives to all of my favourite things in NoVA as I'm moving to the River City this summer. I had high hopes that Akida would be my go-to sushi place in Richmond but alas, my hopes were dashed almost as soon as I took my first bite.
I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Spider Roll. The Spider Roll at Akida could have been excellent... had there been any meat in the roll. I don't know why the sushi chef decided to do this, but he left most of the meat sticking out of the back of the roll where you would usually find the fried crab legs which lend the roll its name. The tempura was good, the meat was good, but almost none of it was wrapped in the roll with the rice. This was weird (but not weird enough that I didn't eat all of the meat sticking out of the roll anyway). The components of this roll were good but I take points off for it not actually being a sushi roll.
As for the Spicy Tuna Roll, it wasn't. In order to get any semblance of spice from this roll I had to put a generous amount of wasabi on it. Even then it wasn't what I'd call "spicy". Puzzlingly, this roll also had tempura flakes in it. I'd never seen that before. Either it was a particular stylization by the sushi chef or it was in there as filler. I sincerely hope it's the former.
With all of that said, the fish was fresh and my dining companion had no complaints about her sushi. She ordered a combo, which comes with a surprisingly large bowl of miso soup. This was a plus for her as she had just gotten off of work in rainy, cold Richmond and was craving something warm in addition to our mostly raw feast.
Though the sushi was unfortunately flawed, Akida had its good points: the presentation of the plates was lovely, and the restaurant itself was just adorable - very small, quite warm, and situated in a nice out-of-the-way location. There were enough tables to allow each dining party their elbow room (if not necessarily their privacy). We were lucky enough to have the place mostly to ourselves during our visit, but I can see how the proximity to your fellow diners could cause a problem when the restaurant crept closer to capacity. The menu was extensive and the sushi was reasonably priced. Service was prompt, attentive, and professional.
It seems that I'll have to keep looking for my Richmond sushi alternative, but I plan to keep Akida in my back pocket. Maybe I'll go back on another night and see if they have a different sushi chef who could improve on my experience. -
Review from Jess H.
This place is alright. The sushi is good, but I found it to be a bit expensive relative to the portion size. It just wasn't filling. I went back to work and I was totally starving an hour or so later.
The shop itself is very tiny. It looks almost run-down from the outside, and then inside it's a little claustrophobic. Be sure to park on the street, the lot right next to Akida is actually for Bank of America customers only, towing enforced. -

Some hole in the wall joints aren't hidden gems, they are just average.
Came to grab a quick lunch bite and could have literally driven right past this place because it is tiny and in a pretty decrepit plain building complete with graffiti and spider webs. Circled back around into what appeared to be their parking but it was the neighboring BOFA lot, and they will tow you in a heart bit, saw a spot across the street from Akida but it was permit only, so finally just decided to park down the street.
I am a nerd, I know this. I enjoy anime and other quirky nerd things like watching a sushi chef prepare sushi. With this in mind I ordered the a chef's choice to see what the chef could do and watch him in action. I was bummed out. He had the fish pre-cut. Not that the fish wasn't fresh or good but it took something away from the experience. It gave my lunch experience a chain restaurant feel. Next time I'll try somewhere else unless I am craving a McSushi. -

Akida has great traditional-ingredient sushi. You're not going to find any of the new, fashionable mint-mango-tuna-etc kind of rolls, but that's just not their style, and they're great at what they do.
I'm a repetitive person, so I always get something along the lines of salmon avocado roll, tuna avocado roll and a christmas roll (yum!), and I'm never disappointed. The fish is fresh, the rice is still warm, the prices and the service are both good. I also love Akida because it's a hole in the wall (in a cheerful, we're all about the food way rather than a sketchy way).
The reason I don't give it that fifth star is twofold:
1. I am a huge fan of agedashi tofu, and theirs is not very good.
2. They can go overboard with the spicy sauce and the crunch. I don't generally order rolls with those ingredients so this is more of an observation of my friends' rolls, but I've been surprised by how totally covered/smothered some of the rolls have been. -

Akida is a great kind of hole-in-the-wall neighborhood sushi restaurants that serves decent traditional-styled sushi. It's my own bias, but I hate the sushi that contains cream cheese or that is completely deep-fried -- it overwhelms the individual flavors of the rest of the ingredients, changes the texture completely, and I think my palate actually gets angry at me. I actually have a theory that some places use mayonnaise and cream cheese to disguise their poorer quality fish. Back to the topic: Akida serves westernized styles of sushi as well, so nobody is left out.
I have to agree with a previous reviewer that their agedashi tofu was very disappointing. A proper agedashi tofu is silken tofu lightly deep-fried and sits in a light, slightly salty-sweet broth of shoyu and mirin and topped with slivers of green onion and bonito flakes that dance on top, literally (they dance from the heat that radiates from the tofu). What I got were lumps of firm tofu deep-fried to the point of drawing out whatever moisture was left in the blocks, leaving chewy hard cubes. Bleh. Even so, it's not enough to bring my review lower than 3 stars, since their sushi is consistently good and we're talking about Richmond, after all. Fish is fresh and cut well, rice is properly cooked and seasoned, their sushi holds together well, but no wasabi is put in their nigiri-sushi :*(
Pricing is comparable to other sushi restaurants. It's not cheap, nor is it pricey. And expect to be hungry an hour or two later if you're just eating sushi -- it's just rice and fish, after all. Yes, some people might consider it to be pricey for the portions, but you're paying for quality, not quantity. If you're looking for that, head over to Sticky Rice (blech). -

Akida is true sushi bliss.
Still one of my favorite sushi spots in Richmond. It's tiny, in a good way. The only bad part about that is the wait that sometimes develops. It's ALWAYS worth the wait though, for excellent sushi.
The sushi itself is fresh, delicious, and relatively inexpensive. I love their rainbow roll, and I always get one of the sushi dinner combos. Excellent miso soup and the ginger dressing on the salad is just right.
I love this place for a cozy date, BUT your companion should also love sushi because the menu doesn't offer many other choices besides the teryaki and udon dishes. I've tasted the steak teryaki, and personally, I don't like it. However, I don't come here for steak, so NOT an issue.
Delicious, Cute, Not overly pricey.
ALSO, the lunch sushi specials are AMAZING. Cheap and very filling. -

For a hole in the wall spot, Akida keeps me coming back. Great service, amazing sushi, (I love the Richmond roll, go figure) and if you sit @ the bar you may luck out on some free samples. Some edema me, miso, several of their many rolls and a Sapporo or two is a winner every time.

Came here due to the ratings on Yelp and I wasn't disappointed at all. I brought a friend of mine who doesn't know anything about sushi for her first sushi experience and the waitress, although a bit cold, made some nice recommendations for her.
I had the #8 Combo, which had half a spicy tuna roll, half a california roll, and ten pieces of sushi. The sushi ranged from salmon to tuna to mackerel to yellowtail to roe and was all very good. The pieces were fresh and the portion was generous for 19.99. With tip it all came to about thirty dollars and it included miso soup.
Its definitely a hole in the wall, but most diamonds in the rough are. As stated below, there are seven tables inside as well as 5 or 6 seats at the sushi bar. There were open tables when we walked in around 7:35 pm, but the restaurant was soon busy and completely full by 8:00 pm.
I know one of the reviewers said they don't have that many interesting rolls but the menu may have changed since they went because under the "Chef's Specials", there were all sorts of rolls that were interesting and unique. My friend had a dragon phoenix roll or something and it had salmon on top of a spicy tuna roll with tempura flakes on top. Delicious to say the least.
I'd of given it five stars but our waitress was kind of bleh. The lady that filled my tea was very sweet, however, and I hope a portion of my tip went to her.
I'm looking forward to lunch there for sure and would like to recommend you park on Grace if you can find a spot as you approach Robinson. From there, its a very short walk. -

Definitely the best sushi in town I have found.
The inside isn't all modern or sweet, it's just pretty traditional.
They have the best fish quality, with the right sized portions, and a decent price.
You could go to moshi moshi or sushi ninja and get good quality fish, but they will give you tiny portions, and they cost a little to a lot more.
As far as nigiri goes, Akida rocks.
They get their fish on Tuesdays and Thursdays so that's when I try to go. -

Was fiending some sushi in richmond and found this place next to his VCU apartment. Small place for seating but the taste expands the room. I love this place. They had some hip names for the house rolls of the month and the pricing wasn't too bad. The customer service was top notch.
The tempura was on point, sushi could not taste any better and spending time with a long time friend? What could be better? I noticed alot of couples there as well.
Could this be a romantic spot for lovely young couples? If so, I should bring my gf here next time we're in town.Listed in: Food from the Land of the…

My guy and I went here, and were pretty surprised with how tiny it was. However the food was great. I got miso soup, shrimp tempura(which was very hot, and I felt a tad awkward because I had to wait a bit for it to cool and the waitresses just kind of watched me), the Richmond roll(which I couldn't really finished because of all the cream cheese), and the Dragon Phoneix roll (delicious and not that spicy).
I really enjoyed the food, however I saw that our sushi was done when we got our soups, and just sat at the bar. They could have managed their timing a bit better. -

Found this place exclusively through Yelp, and it was just great! It's a small, simple, basic Japanese place that hits the spot.
We arrived right at opening (11:30am) on a Monday. I ordered the combo item of 3 spicy rolls (salmon, tuna, california) which came really fast and were delicious. Miso soup came with it and was also good. My bf ordered edamame (standard) and the vegetable udon. The udon was ok, but the broth had very little flavor.
All around, no complaints! They even take Amex.
You have to have a good eye to find this place! -

Review from Alison M.
My bf and I agree that our meal at Akida was the best sushi we've gotten in Richmond so far, but I don't think I'm gonna stop searching just yet. I liked that the prices were very affordable and that it was an actual restaurant and not a bar like Sticky Rice. The service was great and I thought the dishes (leaf shaped plates) were oh so cute. The spicy tuna rolls were awesome and the fish on the sushi was very fresh.
Now the bad: I didn't like that they don't have real crab. The fake crab stick just doesn't do it for me so I couldn't get California rolls. I'm also a fan of creative rolls and Akida didn't have any to choose from that were under $10. I also thought that my spider roll was supposed to have have tobiko on it, but it was missing.
Bottom line: If you're looking for fresh well made sushi and not for creative rolls its a good option. -

I don't know what it looks like in daylight, but the nighttime Akida is kind of an exciting little cave in which to duck on a drizzly night. Along those lines, one could consider Akida's food as comforting... Japanese mac & cheese... certainly not fancy, but pleasing, filling, and unobjectionable.
The eel bowls were a little on the skimpy side, the udon lacking in taste, and the sweet potato roll quite ill-advised. However, the volcano and dragon phoenix rolls were good and attractive.
I especially liked that they were open late and didn't rush us at all - seem like nice people. My in-laws had raved about it, and I trust their palates in regards to flavor and freshness of fish. I hope to update - unfair to pass judgment after a 5 game volleyball match, spirit rally, and 38 hrs. without sleep! -

Huntsville, AL
This was sold to me as a tasty, hole-in-the-wall sushi place. And that's exactly what it is. A small place (7 small tables and 5 bar seats), in a neighborhood, that serves delicious and fresh fish.
I had the squid salad (no octopus salad on offer) and it was a nice way to start the meal. Small strips of soft squid over the same strips of cucumber with a light spicy sauce and tobiko.
We shared various rolls: spicy tuna, spider, salmon-cucumber-avocado, and one of the house specials called the black sea roll. All were delicious, none fell apart, none were too dry or too moist, and none were overpowering. The black sea roll had a torch used on the top and it was a new taste in sushi for me. Very good as well.
I should also note that the spider roll (battered and fried soft shell crab) was the most flavorful spider roll I've ever had. I've had it before but nothing like this one at Akida. I'm now going to have to start getting it everywhere I go to see if anyone else's is that good.
I generally avoid the rolls labeled "spicy" - not because I don't like spice but because I generally find that the spice used on such rolls is so specifically strong as to make the flavor of other rolls undiscernable - but the spice here is mild enough to disappear and not spoil everything else.
We also had red clam, octopus, and tamago nigiri. The tamago was about as good as I've had anywhere, so no complaints. The octopus (tako) was the softest octopus that I have ever had, sushi or otherwise. It was very nice.
The veggie tempura is very good, served super hot and it remains so for some time. It did not taste of oil, which seems to happen at many places, and the vegetables had good flavor. The only issue I have is with the sauce that accompanies the tempura, and it being too weak. However, it is the exact same problem at every sushi place I've ever been to. Not a big deal.
I cannot say it is the very tip-top best sushi I've ever had, but if Akida was in my neighborhood (or the same city), I'd be there weekly. At least. -

This is my favorite place to eat sushi in Richmond. Ive been countless times and its always consistently fantastic. Some of my favorites are: Akida roll ($16), Dragon Phoenix roll ($8) Spicy salmon roll, and Seaweed salad roll. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. Also, the ginger dressing used in the salads is amazing!
Service is always friendly and speedy most nights.

After years of good praise I finally made it to Akida to try this sushi everyone loves so much. While the food was absolutely amazing I did unfortunately leave still hungry but having already spent over $30 I decided to eat some more at home.
The sushi here is fantastic. I tried the simple sushi rolls like the Spicy Squid and Spicy Tuna Rolls, and several of the Chef's Specialty rolls as well. All of it was flavorful and looked amazing. I will say that I was unimpressed with the steamed dumplings, but they weren't bad by any means... just nothing I would write home about.
Prices are all over the place. Some sushi is cheap, some is extremely expensive. Regular entrees are comprable to other area restaurants. No compaints about service at all. A little background white noise might help, especially in such a small room with no music.
