436 Route 36I will concur with Craig, Aki Sushi is a wonderful sushi experience on the Bayshore.
My fiance and I tried Aki Sushi last night, and our initial impression is this: great selection, real good quality! When they gave us the warm towels to wash our hands, they were real, terry-cloth towels! Not too many places do terry cloth these days. They were very warm and felt great on the hands.
When it came time to order we didn't select an appetizer at all, we simply ordered the sashimi and sushi love boat as well as two special rolls figuring that would be enough to fill us. The Sahara Special had eel tempura, avocado inside, spicy salmon, tempura crunch outside. The Beauty Roll had spicy yellowtail, mango, tempura crunch inside, tuna and salmon outside. Both were very tasty and generously sized. I don't like skimpy rolls, so this scored them big points with me. :)
The Love Boat consisted of 20 pieces of fresh sashimi, 10 pcs. of yummy sushi, tasty eel dragon roll and lobster salad roll. (photo at right is just a stock photo) The boat was attractively presented in addition to tasting great. I honestly can't believe we ate all of that food, but it was simply delicious and we couldn't help finish it all. We were quite full when we left, that's for sure. I wanted to try a dessert, but I realized I just didn't have the room for it.
In summary, as people who have tried dozens of (run-of-the-mill) sushi places around the area, we really enjoyed Aki Sushi. The decor doesn't particularly "wow" you, but they have booths and tables alike. No hibachi tables! if you want cooked food, it's made in the kitchen.
We recommend sushi lovers to definitely try them out, they are one of the better sushi restaurants in the Bayshore area. I think closer to 4.5 out of 5 stars. Perhaps on a return visit we may move them into the 5 out of 5 stars ranking.

On a whim one night a few weeks ago I decided to check out the new Sushi place that opened on highway 36 right near my house. Coming home from Manhattan every day, my options at night are limited for food. I'm a Sushi fanatic and haven't found much success on the shore since moving out here a year and a half ago. I'm either stuck with Sushi restaurants with poor service or just bad cuisine.
So skeptical as I was, I entered Aki on a whim and took a seat at the bar where I was greeted with a hot towel and tea. Within minutes I knew this was going to be a unique experience and my intuition proved true.
The sushi was excellent. In fact it was quite easily some of the best, most creative sushi and sashimi I've had, rivaling the very best out there, Morimoto and Nobu included. And that may be with good reason. The "wild rumor" that I have yet to confirm is that both chefs came from Nobu! Their artistry certainly substantiates this.
In addition to wonderful sushi, their chicken teriyaki was lightly fried in panko and delicious.
They do not have a liquor license yet, but I wouldn't let their inability to serve sake be a determining factor in discovering this gem.
I've been there three times since my first and the consistency remains top quality. I will make this a recurring dining experience.
