Review from Sarah W.
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Sac. It's one of the few that's actually authentic (most of the servers really speak Japanese and don't try to correct me when I order a "sah-poro" instead of a "suh-poor-o) and they have the freshest, most high quality sushi in town BY FAR. I can't recommend any rolls off the menu since I usually just tell the chef what I'm in the mood for. Last time I asked for some kind of roll that incorporated hamachi, salmon, jalepenos and lemon and it was THE BEST ROLL I'VE EVER HAD. EVER.
The staff is SUPER friendly but it can get busy, especially during weekend lunch time. Aside from the sushi I love the ramen, the tonkatsu miso is my favorite. The tempura is also very good. I've gotten a boring meat-based bento box a couple times before and it was just ok. I don't really like the dressing they put on the salad. If you come here and order something boring like teriyaki chicken you probably won't be impressed. This place is for RAMEN + SUSHI.Listed in: My Neighborhood

I finally found real sushi in Sacramento. I don't know where the local sushi shops learned to slap cream cheese on fish, but i'm over it.
Akebono, is a simple family restaurant with high quality sushi. Lots of great rolls, and fresh fish. The best I've found in Sactown.
I hear the ramen is excellent also, so i'll be returning soon.
Peace out. -

Went here with a couple of friends for a get-together gab gab. Honestly did not expect this place to look how it did. It has way more of a busy vibe than anything else. We got seated right away though.
Ordered a bento with mix tempura and sushi nigiri. They could offer more tempura but the sashimi was pretty good. I forgot what my friends ordered but they ate their food fairly quickly. It was pretty good food though. I think the portions were well off, except for the mix tempura.
The service was a bit off to me. I understood they were kinda busy but it was weird after receiving our food that they left the check there for us even before we could take a bite out of the food.
Regardless, I'd come back again. I loveeee sushi. -

The best so far in the Sacramento area for ramen. Akebono offers a variety of authentic Japanese cuisine. From the sushi to the curry the food tastes just as how it would have been prepared in Japan. Having lived in Japan for three years, I grew accustomed to the customer service level not normally found in American establishments. The workers at Akebono quickly remind me that there is so much more that goes into a great dining experience. I will definitely be returning very shortly.
If you are an individual that only like some made up concoction for sushi rolls then Akebono might not be for you. Sushi is done right here, meaning proper sequencing and pairings with their fish. -

Is it wrong to like a place that sells the same type of foods your restaurant does? :P
I'm not saying my place is bad in the slightest as I take advantage of my employee discount all the time, but Akebono is really good. I've had the mixed sashimi plate and it was really good but only slightly better quality than most sashimi in Sac. I usually come for the Croquette Curry and the Kaisen Shio Ramen. It's so good, I love croquettes and Japanese curry doesn't have as strong a flavor as Indian curries. I wish they had the option to make it spicier though, S&B ain't enough for me. The rice is far from dry, just how I love it. It's a tad pricey, but comes with so much! I hope it's not the box mixed curries like Hokkaido Ramen uses.
I hope they don't change the Kaisen Shio Ramen, it's so amazing! It comes with corn, spinach, seaweed, crab, scallops, shrimp, mussel, and squid and a lot of 'em! They cut a little square of butter to melt into the soup like they do in Japan too. Everyone who's eaten their ramen say it's the best and I concur.
Service is nice and prompt, the waiter with long hair and glasses is always super nice. Kinda small space so sometimes gets croweded but I've only waited once and it wasn't long at all as the bar is usually empty. Sit at the bar people, it's the same thing if not better because if you need something the sushi chefs will usually tell the servers to help you. The hours aren't the greatest but still reasonable. Water is always refilled when running low.
Overall great place, especially for the Japanese specialties that no one else really offers around here. I always recommend trying Akebono! -

Okay....I just got to laugh! I went to Akebono again and this time tried the TEMPURA ZARU SOBA. I never tried it and I did for the first time. It's really not that bad at all. Ive seen others order it but never tried it. I guess because I never cared for cold noodles. But someone treated me out and she always ordered the TEMPURA ZARU SOBA. I figured that I might as well try it.
Just imagine cold buckwheat noodles and dipped in a cold sauce. Slurp it and whoa....its cold. Well...it was a delicious cold and then you take your tempura dip it in the tempura sauce and eat. It's amazing how the cold noodles would balance out with the hot tempura. It was excellent. I LOVE IT!
It's a nearby restaurant where I live, so this is my favorite restaurant. Im addicted to this place. HAHAHAHA4 Previous Reviews: Show all »

This review is based on four separate visits to try out a variety of their extensive menu so that I can offer a well rounded review.
Overall it's a mixed bag when it comes to their food, it will depend on what you order.
Foods tried:
Rolls: Awesome roll- Um actually it should be called unappetizing! Everything that could be wrong with a sushi roll, happened to my Not-So-Awesome roll. The sushi rice was mushy and WAS CAKED ON TWICE TOO MUCH, the tempura shrimps center was not crunchy, and the taste overall was well.... errr unappetizing.
Gyoza: steamy, tasty soft center and slight crunch outer, surprisingly very good! $4.95 for 5, see photo.
Gomoku Ramen Noodle Soup: Soy based broth is too salty for my taste and blood pressure but the abundant toppings of vegetables, quail egg, shitake mushroom slices, three jumbo fresh shrimps made up for that. The ramen noodles was ok, basic noodles that neither tasted better or worse than your packaged noodles. See photo
Champon Ramen soup - opted for buckwheat noodles (thin). Pork based broth, delicious! If you like skinny noodles, opt for the buckwheat. Seafood and vegetable toppings. Recommended!
Teriyaki Chicken and Tempura Bento Box: tempura included two shrimps, one potato slice, one broccoli, one zucchini slice; good but I would have liked to see one more veggie slice of acorn squash or sweet potato. The teriyaki chicken was ok, not particularly better or worse than others. The accompanied rice was too mushy so I had a difficult time picking it up with chopsticks. Sushi rice should be sticky. Anwoo clouded two, thick juicy slices of orange, yum!
Service: Very good. The waitress forgot to bring my tea, charged me for it, when I brought it to her attention, she was sincerely apologetic and offered me tea. Mistakes happen, a sincere apology goes a very long way. Subsequent visits have shown excellent service.... i.e., i rarely had to ask for anything.
Ambience: Casual to trendy, nice but a bit small. -
Review from Andrew L.
This is a great all-around Japanese restaurant.
I was first intrigued by the numerous ramen debates that pitted this place against Shoki, which I have been a huge fan of since the time that Edokko on Broadway closed down. The loss of Edokko left a gap in my heart (and stomach) that wasn't filled until Shoki opened its doors a year later, for which it won itself a loyal fan... but then years later I found out that Akebono's ramen recipe was based on the one from my lost love Edokko. Do I settle with my new love, or try to revisit an old flame? What is a boy to do?
-- begin tangent --
This is straight out of an Asian drama... except nobody's dying of Leukemia or needs a kidney transplant. In the drama it would feature some girl who lost her fiancee in a car accident and after years of mourning, learned to love again by dating the guy who was there to comfort her. Then suddenly, she runs into her dead boyfriend's long lost twin and her life becomes a jumbled mess and she walks into a truck. Ack, the conflicting emotions. Fortunately this is real life and I'm allowed to have an open relationship with my restaurants...
-- end tangent --
So, is there enough room in my heart (and stomach) for another ramen place? The answer is an emphatic "yes." The ramen is legit and they've got a wide variety of ramens to choose from. Also, if you're looking to tackle a food challenge, they've got a large super spicy ramen challenge. It's only about habanero hot, but the temperature of the broth and the quantity is large enough to make it an ordeal... but it's possible. I did it. -

This place is good. I enjoy coming here to get my sushi and other japanese cravings done. I love the fried foods here. It is delicious. I come over here to eat, because it is near home, not only this it is also near my school. It is a perfect location to eat in a different location than campus food, and also from home when one does not feel like eating. Their tempura is CRISPY! DELICIOUSNESS! and the tonkakatsu is CRISPY! goodness. their rice is a must because it is like sticky rice. and then their salad is good, esp their salad dressing.

Simply one of the best. Japanese restaurants here in Sacramento! Service was excellent and the food was awesome. Ordered a seafood ramen while my wife ordered the dragon roll and shrimp tempura which were all amazing!! I would definitely rate this place 6 stars if there is such a rating in yelp.

Portions are huge!
Went here with my family for the first time. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and tempura combo. The chicken wasn't dry! I was surprised and pleased. Tempura came with 2 shrimp- score. My uncle also ordered a sushi boat for the table. OMG! The thing is as big as the Titanic and we all went down with it. By the end of the night I was stuffed.
Cons: not enough parking spaces and the wait could be on the lengthy side. You probably want to go earlier than later for dinner. -
Review from Kacie Y.
Another one of my favorite sushi restaurants in town. I come here maybe once a month with my family. We come here when we have larger groups, such as ten or thirteen people. The waiters and waitresses are nice and welcoming. No long waits at the door unless it's jam packed. The rolls are a bit bigger than Banzai rolls. Sometimes I have to take the rest home, but it still doesn't stop me from eating them! I usually get the Rockin' Roll, which has a variety of raw fish and avocado and is deep fried.
Yummy!!! :] -

Was excited to try this restaurant because of the Yelp reviews!
A little disappointed with the food. Ordered the poke and it was decent. A little bland. Also ordered the spicy ramen. For around $9, you get a lot of noodle but tasted decent. It was not spicy at all and bland. I couldn't even finish half of the bowl.
3 stars for good service. -

Stopped for dinner here before partaking in some bowling on Saturday night.
Ample sushi, appetizers, and drinks for a group of four for only about $70. The bill felt like a steal to me, considering I have easily spent that at Mikuni and other places for just two people. The food was tasty and filing, and the service was good. I look forward to a round two sometime soon. -

Not "bad," but I'm not wild about it either. I had sukiyaki which was kind of a one-note wonder-- sweet. It didn't have complex layers of flavors and was not very savory. Also, the portion was pretty miserly and not very hot. It was mostly sugary broth and didn't contain many solids. It was a lackluster affair. My companion shared a bite of his combination meal and I remember thinking the meat entrée wasn't any tastier than the meat we grill at home. The sushi was okay, but I don't know the quality necessarily justified the price. I felt mildly ripped off and in the future would roll the dice on trying a new place rather than returning here.

Mmmm I like Akebonos. You can't go wrong with any choices on their menu.
I've had their ramen, bento box, and sushi... still haven't had a chance to try their curry and so far everything was delicious. Quantity is definitely worth it and quality is average to above average for what you pay.
Food:
Their sushi is prepared fresh and really well crafted. Prices for rolls range from $5-$16. You can't go wrong with any roll above $9.
Their lunch bento boxes are very affordable. You get so much more for what you pay (compared to other places) and the quality is fairly decent.
Their ramen is not bad. Super msg filled (I think this is standard), but they give you a good amount of noodles to make up for the lack of meat. Their shoyu ramen and their new super spicy ramen (forgot the name) was pretty good. The sliced pork blew me away, juicy and meaty... too bad there were only two pieces.
Location:
The parking lot may be a little dirty, but the inside is clean and gives off a generic Japanese dining atmosphere. The waitresses are very friendly and patient even during the busy lunch hours.
Overall, this place gave me a good impression and I will continue to go here for my Japanese fix. -

decent ramen and sushi good enough to get your ramen and/or sushi fix,
tonkatsu charsu ramen ($9)
I was considering getting the seafood champon ramen and initially thought of getting it since I thought it was called champion ramen but after my cousin corrected me I said if it aint a champion i dont want it. Anyways the tonkatsu ramen broth came out boiling hot which was a plus. The broth itself was not as good as orenchi (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), santa (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) , or dojo (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in the bay area but comparable to miki (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The noodles were firm yet chewy just the way I like it. The charsu was tender but flavorless. They did not have a stewed pork add on option.
dream come true roll ($16)
5 types of fish/meat packed into one giant roll. It contained salmon, eel, red snapper?, imitation crab, and one more kind of sashimi fish. Its big enough to share with 2 people. Its the most expensive roll on their menu but it was one of the better rolls I have had.
Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back as the ramen selection in sacramento is limited to shoki (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which isnt that much better than here. -

I've been here a few time and every time has been pretty good. This place is usually busy but that's because it's good and worth a wait. Most of the workers there is Japanese and that's rare. The waitress do tend to run around a lot since it's usually busy. I like the tonkatsu chasu ramen and I usually have them split it into two bowl for sharing because its such a huge portion. I usually get the dream come true roll which is great for sharing since its so big and the salmon n tuna in there is very fresh. Had the miso chasu ramen and that was also tasty. Only thing negative is the ramen broth is more on the salty side so I get thristy afterward. Overall this is a good Japanese restaurant that have great ramen and fresh sushi. I don't have to go to a "ramen house" to get good noodle and other Japanese restaurant to get good sushi rolls. This place excel in both. I'm a regular now.

This place is a convenient spot for me, as they are open 7 days a week and most holidays. I come here quite often (at least once a week) and so far have liked most everything I've ordered. Chicken teriyaki, tempura, ika geso, croquettes, kimchi ramen, rocky roll, etc.
The only thing I didn't really like was their maguro poki sashimi. But that's because Kru definitely has the BEST poki sashimi in town.
Oh and I like that Japanese people work here :) -

This is my FAVORITE Japanese spot in Sacramento!!!! I live nearby and eat here at least once a week. It is consistently great. My 5 year old daughter is even a fan. The rolls are really good, but my favorite is the ramen. It comes in a HUGE bowl, I seriously doubt you will be able to finish it in one seating. I recommend eating it there and taking your leftovers home because if you order it to go, you get about half of the portion. The ramen is also a great hangover cure :)

This place was pretty busy when we came! Friday; dinner time; we expected a bit of a wait. We were seated right away by very friendly staff. I ordered tempura and a roll (the Titanic I think?). Both were delicious! And the food came so fast! We were surprised actually. Bf got a roll and tempura which he liked, but was not blown away.
We went back a couple weeks later for the ramen and we were very pleased :) Perfect comfort/hangover food if ya ask me. Only down side is it is a little $$ for noodles.. -

RAMEN is simply wonderful.....
My mother and I frequently order a special combination of Beef Teriyaki and Grilled Calimari Teriyaki. Try it....you'll like it!!!
Call ahead and reserve a table. The wait could possibly be long if you have a large party.
Look to see if there is room at the sushi bar. If so, call a server over and be seated immediately. -

Let's face it: Japanese people (yes, even those of us who have never been to Japan) are a little snobbish when it comes to Americanized versions of the Japanese restaurant. Are Italian Americans the same way when they go to Olive Garden? Me thinks so! I know I expect a lot from my Japanese restaurant so when I find one that I LOVE, I just have to Yelp it from the rooftops!
Akebono is the best in the greater Sacramento area. I live in Rocklin and travel regularly (but not nearly often enough) all the way down to south Sac to eat here. I see there is a restaurant by the same name out in Granite Bay -- not sure if it's the same owners but will definitely give it a try.
Anyway, Akebono is by far the tastiest, most authentic Japanese restaurant around. Remember, I'm not from Japan so when I use the word "authentic", I mean the food is not watered-down Japanese in the way Panda Express is watered-down Chinese food. The noodle dishes -- ramen and udon -- are sooooo yummy! The soups are probably good enough to please my aunty from Japan! Their sushi is super fresh and everything we order always exceeds our expectations.
The service is efficient -- not super friendly -- but if you patronize Japanese restaurants at all, you know you'll get yelled at on your way in, rushed for your order and have your check dropped off efficiently, usually as you take your last bite. I don't take off any stars from Akebono's review because I have come to love this type of service. I don't go here to get pampered, I go for the fabulous food. -

Just when I was about to give up on japanese food I stumbled across this place. It was like a gem in the belly button of an overweight belly dancer, you have to look really close to find the diamond. Anyways, secretly hidden in a strip mall next to old hollywood video and nestled between the peverly bum smelling of urine and king cobra. FYI (peverly is a verb used to describe subtle perversion) you will find this out of this world sushi joint.
Whether its their spider roll, shrimp or salmon lovers roll this place will definitely leave you with an akeboner. It did for me, with salmon eggs all over it.
Once again Eduardo does not believe so with his two star rating. Shame on you, shame on you, shame on you. How can msg have taste its suppose to be tasteless like you. Then you complain about pork slices being too large? They are suppose to be large like sausage links.
Note to self: "minus one candy cane from Eduardos christmas card"
never the less try once try twice but definitely try and try again. -
Review from Jenna L.
This place was recommended to me by my cousins - they are frequent eaters here and said that this is the best ramen in the area, so I was happy to try it. It ended up being pretty decent, even the ramen was pretty good, at least for Sacramento. I got the tonkotsu, and we also got a roll that was pretty good. The karaage was ok too. Surprisingly good place.

San Francisco, CA
My boyfriend brought me here for our third date because he knows my undying love for noodles. I didn't think there would be any good ramen places in Sac, but I must say, I was impressed!
So my boy ordered the Champon Ramen (recommended by our sprightly waitress) and some roll called the Dream Come True. The Champon arrived first, and let's just say it looked every bit like a bowl of ramen for CHAMPIONS! The bowl was so large, I swear, you could bathe an infant in it. The ramen was very fresh and came with generous helpings of shrimp, squid, and veggies soaked in a rich tonkotsu broth. My boyfriend's like a walking garbage disposal, but even he couldn't finish the entire bowl. ._.
Then came the roll.
Holy CRAP. The Dream Come True was about the length of my forearm and the span of my palm. It was by far the largest sushi roll I'd ever seen! It contained FOUR different types of sashimi and was drizzled in some rich, decadent sauce. We each took a bite of our pieces and affirmed that the roll truly lived up to its name. I'm not a big fan of sashimi, but I loved it anyway. At $15.95 it seemed way overpriced, but believe me, it is well worth the money.
What I ordered paled in comparison to the aforementioned, but was delicious nonetheless. The Chasu Ramen was amazing: the tonkotsu broth was not too salty and not too bland-- just right; the chasu slices were so tender and delicate, they melted right in your mouth; lastly, the noodles were soft and chewy, just the way I like it! Overall, the ramen was simple, but satisfying and delicious. To top it off, I had a dainty little sushi roll (I forgot what it was called) that came with fresh salmon sashimi topped with thin lemon slices and bean sprouts--a nice touch! The fresh lemon slices complemented the sashimi very nicely.
Service was wonderful. Our waitress was a friendly petite Japanese woman. (I mention her nationality because there are so many sushi joints owned by people who aren't really Japanese.) The waitress gave us free miso soup and edamame to compensate for moving us to another table. We're definitely coming back the next time I have a raging ramen craving. -
Review from Emily T.
Not bad, not bad, Akebono.
The server was friendly and the service was lightning fast. No really, our food came out REALLY fast even though there was a large table of about 20 people before us.
Anyways, my friend's rolls were good, but I already forgot what they got (and I was just here 2 days ago). My roll, the "fish lovers roll" was truly spectacular! The fish to rice ratio was AMAZING with light sauces that did not overpower the sushi whatsoever. Tuna on the inside. Shrimp, salmon, hamachi, and other stuff on the outside. As much as I love raw fish, I couldn't tell what fish was what. All I know was there were varying colors of pink, orange, yellow-ish, and white. This roll made me happy.
The fish is fairly fresh, however, I've had better. I know better than to judge a promising sushi restaurant based on just one visit, but believe me Akebono, I will be back! -

Sacramento, CA
My first time here, I got the nigiri lunch combo, and it was solid. The miso was just right for me, without the sweet flavor that some has, and not too salty, with fresh tofu sitting in the bottom of it. The fish was good; the salmon was like butter, and as good as it gets. The blue fin tuna was delicious, too. Several other types of fish were included, and they were good without being great. The rice was somewhat like mochi in places; Japanese rice is wetter than Chinese rice, but the grains should be their own separate entities, not gelling together. I've been there twice now, and the rice was the same each time. The second time I got the saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel with light salt) lunch. It was good, but not excellent, and wasn't as big as what I've had elsewhere. I ordered green tea with the meal, and it's strength, bitterness, and flavor were on par with what's served in Japan, while being served in an attractive cup.
The wait staff is friendly, and at least some speak Japanese. Much Japanese is heard from the other tables, as well.
It's been crowded each time I've gone or walked past it. I've heard that stuff gets pretty amazing as you're willing to spend more money.
I live close by, and I'll be there again. -

I think we ordered the wrong items. We ordered teriyaki chicken and it was so-so...super sweet sauce over tough chicken strips. The miso soup was amazing but the salad was all iceberg and thousand island dressing which is to say American-style Japanese food. Good for what it is, thought I thought it was a bit pricey for dinner.
Next time I will go more traditional and order some sashimi.
EXCELLENT for families with small children. Wait staff is awesome.
