What is so great about Akasha Yoga? EVERYTHING!!!

    Instructors:

The instructors are very knowledgeable and attentive, offering each student individualized assistance. I cannot believe how much my practice has blossomed under their guidance.

    Studio:

The second-story studio with two walls of windows offers an amazing close-to-nature feel. I especially love practicing in the studio during sunset! Beautiful!!!

    Classes:

Akasha offers a wide variety of classes for every level of practice, and I can always find a class to match my energy and mood. My favorite class is Vinyasa 2-3 with Helen on Tuesdays at 5:15.

I also like that I can sign up and pay for classes online if desired.

Finally, the owner, Stephanie, and even the other students are so friendly and welcoming! Great yoga community!

I love yoga and I love Akasha.  I have been practicing at Akasha for just about a year, and Akasha is the perfect yoga studio to learn from teachers who are engaged, enthusiastic, warm and welcoming.  I walk into the studio and am always greeted with a smile, whether it's from Stephanie, the awesome owner or one of the teachers at the front desk.

I love the space, small enough to feel intimate, but with natural lighting! High windows/sky lights and large windows looking out with a view of trees and sky.  Practicing yoga at Akasha during the rain is THE BEST -- and be sure try a class that will fall during sunset because the colors in the sky are usually amazing!

I love Akasha! I've been going here for almost 2 years now and I can definitely say I love going here! This place has gone through some major changes over the past 6 months--in an awesome way! The studio is a perfect space; small and intimate but open & fresh. All the instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly and supportive. They are all unique and offer a variety of different classes and methods of teaching--so you won't get bored! The owner, Stephanie rocks--she will make you feel at home and welcome at Akasha.

With the help of all the great instructors I have definitely grown in my practice and ability. Starting with little yoga experience and low flexibility, I am now taking the advance classes and doing what I never thought I could!
If you are looking for a great yoga community, this is the place to be. It's a great place to come if you are just starting out and want to know what yoga is about or if you are an advanced yoga and want a challenge and new insight in your practice.

    I love Akasha!

Akasha yoga is wonderful!! Very intimate place with some amazing teachers. Check their bios before you go, because teachers vary a lot, both their yoga styles as well as how they teach.

There are lots of classes at different times with teachers with a variety of yoga styles. I signed up for a new student package at $30 for 5 sessions and I liked all of the classes I've tried. They also have a Deep Relaxation class which is very interesting. You slow down more and really feel what your body is telling you.

Recently I tried more Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga and absolutely loved it. For Hatha, you slow down more but learn the poses better. I really like how teachers actually correct you one by one and gives each individual attention. For Vinyasa, I just feel so much more energized after class, and my heart beats up fast which proves some parts of it involves cardio. I feel so much better just after practicing weekly for a month. No need for luxury spas or massages after yoga sessions. I am sold!

Btw, here's a good reading if you're wondering what all these different styles of yoga means:

This is a really nice studio. I think most yoga studios are similar and of course what's really important is finding an instructor who has a style that you like. My favorite and regular class is led by Melissa. I have been taking her class weekly for the last year and a half and it is consistently different and always includes new challenges.
Other teachers have filled in from time to time and though they had different styles they were equally good and helpful.

I have been practicing yoga for about 5 years. Akasha Yoga is an amazing yoga studio. The instructors are very knowledgeable and very in tune with the students taking their classes. They are very attentive making sure each student is very comfortable and asks if they have any pains/issues that they can assist in modifying their practice. You really feel like you are taking a private class.
Akasha has wonderful vibe. It feels like home to me.  It's a place you just don't want to leave. The owner, Stephanie, is an incredible person as well as her instructors! She cares for each and every one that comes through the studio door.  She and the instructors at the studio are very positive and you can't help but smile when you see her and the instructors.
The classes are always evolving, so you'll never get bored. The big amazing windows that bring the outside in make you feel like you are at one with nature. There is always something new at Akasha. There's a rocking yoga on the last Saturday of every month, where for example, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd theme songs, are played while doing yoga. Believe it or not it works and rocks!!!  The studio has a special that for $20.00 you get 3 classes. How can you beat that?!!  If you love yoga you need to come in and take a class. There's a variety of classes and levels for whatever mood your body & mind is in.

Despite the small studio, they have a good variety of types of classes.

I've had two great teachers there, I cannot remember one, but Allison was great. Relaxing ambiance, friendly people behind the counter, variety in times make it easy to find a class to squeeze in.

Small intimate studio.  $30 for 5 intro price is an awesome deal to check them out.

I found a yoga studio to advance into more difficult poses, which I definitely found at Akasha.  There are also L1 classes, but I can't speak for them.  Melissa is very supportive and encouraging.  I think you'll like it if you like yoga.  Just hope it doesn't get too overcrowded!

Akasha yoga has a GREAT vibe! I've been so stressed working a ton and driving all over CA (I'm in sales). Because of this I was having back pains and a general drain of energy.

3 visits to Akasha had me feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and happy!

I took 2 classes with Allison, she is amazing. Her genuinely happy and positive energy seeps into the pores of the students in class- you cant help but smile when you're in the studio with her!

I also took a candlelight flow class with Amanda- they have a live harp player which takes this experience to another level. Bliss :)

I'm a huge fan of Akasha yoga!  Yoga was something I always wanted to try, but for some reason I was intimidated...........  that didn't last even five minutes after I walked in the door.  The owner Stephanie is warm and welcoming, and the instructors are all enthusiastic and knowledgeable.  The Studio itself is beautiful with an amazing view, and you must see it at night lit by candles for a relaxing Candlelight yoga class!  I love this studio, it's become the place for me to destress, body and mind!

When I was living in San Diego (2003-2009), I tried many different yoga studios, but found my home at Akasha - and I already miss it A LOT (now that I live in Berkeley).

The yoga teachers at Akasha are absolutely amazing.  I primarily took classes from Michelle (Monday nights), Melissa (Wednesday and Fridays) and Manel (Thursday and Saturdays).  All three teachers had a unique style, but definitely had the most important thing in common: they are all deeply invested in helping students strengthen their practice.  In each class, many posture variations are made available.  I also found that every class was unique and FUN - I never found that the classes were repetitive, or solely focused on one set of postures.

The best part - which I find missing in other studios - is the chance to LEARN and PRACTICE more difficult postures.  In more advanced classes, it is assumed that you already know certain postures, but this is definitely not the case, especially when you are in the "intermediate stage" (i.e. you don't belong in the beginner class anymore, but you aren't certain how to "pretzel yourself" into some of the more difficult postures).  Michelle, Melissa and Manel always integrated more difficult postures into their classes, and actually took the time to explain how to flow into them, most notably with PROPER ALIGNMENT.  No muscling into these hard postures at the risk of injury!

Akasha also offered special workshops for various asanas (arm balances, inversions, partner yoga, etc) earlier in 2009.  Those workshops were amazing!  It was really fun to go to the workshops (that cost the same as a class!) and I found my practice was much more strong for it.

You can't really beat the price of class packages, either.  They have an introductory 5 classes for $30, and their monthly unlimited rate is also really competitive and reasonable - and definitely worth every cent!

The best part?  I find that the teachers at Akasha are extremely accessible and NICE.  No "I'm holier than thou because I can do ______ or ______" (Insert a challenging posture here).  I've had teachers in the past that actually laugh at you if you can't do something.  Not cool!  You will NOT find that sort of environment at Akasha.

I can't say enough good things about this studio - I wish I could have transplanted it up to Berkeley with me, which is saying a lot because there is a studio up here on practically every block.

I went to Akasha five times, and didn't care for the studio - mostly personal preference, but there were a few incidents with other students' behavior that I found unsettling and rude, so I haven't gone back.

Clearly a lot of folks like the studio, so go check them out.

I actually heard about Akasha Yoga through an ad in Vision Magazine.   I came here and saw one review and I figured I would check it out.  I went to my first class tonight with Monique that was hatha yoga.  The yoga studio has a really good ambiance and nice decorations.  It's quiet and warm but not hot and the class I went to was not heated which was a relief for me because those were the only classes I was able to find in PB when I was looking for a yoga studio.  The class had about 8 people so it was full but not overcrowded.  The teacher seemed to have a pretty firm knowledge of poses and led an interesting class with some good variety.  Also on the plus side, they offer 5 classes for $30 to new students.  I will definitely be returning again and will probably make it my new yoga studio.

I love Akasha! After searching for the best and most affordable, I am extremely happy to have found Akasha. Everyone at the studio is so nice and every instructor I've had really makes each class super fun and worthwhile. - The best part is the college pricing. There's no better deal out there :)

Magical place to practice and learn yoga.  Every instructor is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.  I know because I have been going here since it has opened (8-9 years ago, can't remember).  Stephanie, the dynamic owner and also instructor, is so enthusiastic about the power and wonder of yoga.  She is always looking at ways to improve the center.  It is a community where people try to get to know you and friendships are formed.  The yogis range from all ages.  Can't say enough great things about this special and charming studio.  There are classes for everyone, from gentle, restorative yoga to the more arduous styles.  Give it a try!  Can't beat for the first 3 classes for $20 for newbies and special rates for students.

I have been to a few yoga places in San Diego and this is my favorite. A few of the good features include:

~A very relaxing environment from the moment you walk in. The place is comfortable, intimate and nicely decorated. The people at the desk are really wonderful and friendly.
~The yoga studio itself is also very nice: good temperature and lighting control, nice music, blocks, blankets, and scented eye covers for you to use. It also has a large window so you can look outside.
~All classes had a good mix of relaxation, breathing, flexibility, strength and balance. There was no intimidation or snobbery from the teachers or students and every class offered challenges for a spectrum of levels.
~The teachers are pretty different by all were great. Amanda gave me a light, relaxing solo class because no one else came at that time. Marisa had a great class for opening up hip and shoulder joints by exploring the depths of different poses. Laura's class was the most crowded one I went to and she offered more advanced variations of almost all the poses.
~I think the new beginner deal is $20 for 3 classes which is a pretty good way to try different teachers out. They also occasionally have discounted classes on certain days.

I definitely recommend trying Akasha out if you need a little haven to de-stress and improve your yoga skills.

Just recently relocated to the San Diego area and had a chance to take a meditation class with Natalie. Having taken yoga in other studios the thing that stood out for me the most was the sheer intimacy of the place. You come away feeling like you've just taken a one-on-one class. Natalie did a remarkable job instructing and helping us get into a meditative state. The studio and bucolic surroundings just added to the overall experience. My fiance has taken yoga classes there as well and had only the best things to say about the instructors and studio in general. lastly, we've both taken yoga back in Manhattan and they really don't come close to the experience at Akasha.

Akasha Yoga is small, intimate gem of a yoga studio.  Their amazing instructors and clientèle help reach a balance of community and self advancement that I think is a challenge for other larger studios.  I started my yoga journey at Akasha in January 2009.  My prior yoga experience had mostly been at my gym and I didn't realize that I had never really been taught yoga as a practice and ideation.  Yoga quickly became more than just a series of poses as my new instructors guided me in developing my practice.  Each class has its own flow and style with each individual instructor, making every class unique.

Instructors are not afraid to put their hands on you and do so in a way that ensures you have proper alignment throughout the class.  I love that there is actual instruction, showing you postures and explaining what it should feel like so you can maximize the posture in the variation of your choice.  All instructors are supportive of each student's development and invested in guiding personal growth.

Also setting the holistic tone of the studio is the diversity of classes offered.  In addition to traditional hatha and vinyasa classes, Akasha is special in offering outstanding Deep Relaxation classes that make you feel like you're at the spa, as well as classes emphasizing back healthy postures and seminars on breathing techniques.  Overall I love the focus of Akasha  and the community its created, I'm always happy to go to class and feel wonderful every time I leave.

I was visiting the La Jolla/Del Mar area for the month of July, and joined Akasha because of the great Yelp reviews.  It also happened to be incredibly convenient.  I just loved my experience here.  I had five or six different teachers over the month, and every one was helpful, encouraging, and taught me something new about my practice.  (Michelle has got to be one of the most positive people I've ever met, and a great teacher!)  The vibe is relaxed, non-competitive, yet focused.  The studio is small and clean, and there is an abundance of props.  I have to say that its size is one of the appealing features.  You feel like you've found a hidden gem.  Thanks to Natalie and the Akasha staff for a great month of yoga!

When I wanted to commit to self-care and begin yoga, I picked this place and am so grateful. The studio, unlike others, is smaller and has this peaceful, therapeutic sense to it. Everytime I go, I feel better afterwards. I am comfortable there, and the teachers modify the poses/class to his/her students. There are props available and personal massage touches during the class and near the end. The staff is also friendly. In general, love the place and I never feel judged by my level or appearance when I go. What more can one ask for when participating in needed self-care!
