Pluses - Good rainbow roll, well cooked chicken, salad was fresh and dressing hit the spot. Good service by seemingly friendly people.
Minuses - Short Beef Ribs tasted like they had been cooked earlier in the day, teriyaki sauce was too sweet, miso soup was too light for this yelper.
Cheers!
Uh oh akagi's...you're failing me...
i used to love love LOVE this place, but i just went two nights ago..and i think it has sadly gone downhill.. =(
1. food is cheap however it isn't the best quality
2. i ordered the dragon roll and it was about $5. the dish only came with four pieces and my sushi was falling apart!
3. we ordered a side of edamme (sp?) and it was literally only about 15 pieces
4. food portions arent huge
5. when u ask for a fork..they give u a PLASTIC one..not good for a dine in restaurant.

BUYER BEWARE: yes, the food is cheap, but quality is lacking.
I was excited to eat here since the place was full at 6pm, and a good handful of people were coming in to pick up their to-go orders. I quickly glanced over the menu on their window and was even more excited to see just how inexpensive everything was!
I had to fight the urge to order all rolls (the prices were tempting) since I briefly read some Yelp reviews beforehand which advised to stick to the bento boxes, and I'm glad I did. I ordered a 2-item bento box with tempura and sashimi and the usual miso soup, rice and salad came with it. The bf also ordered a 2-item bento with a beef with noodles option (I can't remember the name) and sashimi. But we couldn't help ourselves and ordered spicy tuna and dragon rolls, too.
Miso soup: what happened to the tofu?? Mostly broth with bits of green onions and seaweed. I didn't finish it.
Salad: room temp with hardly any dressing. Nothing special here.
The sashimi was "meh," and I think it was cut funny. The pieces were long and fat/tall(?) rather than rectangular and thinly sliced (if that makes sense to any of you). And the color was more of a unhealthy, pale pink color. You eat with your eyes first, and I almost lost my appetite just looking at it. And the tempura was your average tempura. Good amount for around 7 bucks.
Then came the rolls.
Spicy tuna: biggest disappointment! I love spicy tuna, and this was probably the worst one I've ever had. It had a spicy sauce on top that I am almost positive is some kind of Mexican hot sauce - Cholula? Tapatio? Crazy thought, I know! But seriously, once I figured out what that odd taste was after the second piece, I couldn't eat anymore of it.
Dragon roll: Four large pieces, but stuffed with mostly rice. I actually picked out the middle because it was just too much rice.
Speaking of rice, the sushi rice had a gummy texture, as if there was too much water. I actually looked back at the sushi counter to see who was making the sushi, because I was shocked that a sushi chef wouldn't notice this texture. I've had messy rolls, not-so-good-tasting rolls, but I've rarely experienced gummy rice in/on the rolls. This was another reason why I couldn't eat another spicy tuna roll and why I picked at the dragon roll.
I can see the appeal of this place, but I don't think I'll be coming back for a while. Overall the food is 2 stars, but the prices bump it up to 2.5 stars.
Came here on Friday after a day of fun in the sun beach hopping from Ocean Beach to Rockaway Beach!!
It was packed, but we waited for about 5 minutes! We were seated and there was the rush of service! The waitstaff is nice, efficient, and have great sense of humors!
Ordered Dinner Combo Bento Box with 3 options (yes 3!!). Chicken Katsu, Tempura and Tuna Sashimi. Yummy yummy in my belly! I also ordered 2 orders of Spicy Tuna Roll..I effin love this roll. Its just the right amount of kick with the tuna!
Very satisfied!!!! Plenty of left overs, and it was still delicious later on!
Akagi..you have yet to disappoint me (and I dont think you ever will)!

Akagi is my definition of Japanse and sushi on a budget!
3 item bento box dinner with salad, miso… Read more »
I had a slight case of the runs today after eating 6 tiny pieces of sashimi wrapped with rice yesterday. ?Obviously the fish had gone bad,
Yelp is all about people reviewing a restaurant based on the place's ability to live up to expectations - expectations about food, service, decor, portions, pricing, etc.
And I gotta say, Akagi always lives up to my expectations. I expect a filling, cheap, fast, tasty meal, and Akagi always delivers. I go elsewhere for sushi, but for bento lunch or dinner, Akagi can't be beat. I've been a patron for 20 years now (hello, 6-year old dama always wondering what was inside of the paper lanterns and scared to go into the hallway that leads to their bathroom) and well into adulthood, I'm still a fan.
Always will be, I suspect.
I've been going to Akagi ever since I was a little girl back in the 80's and I love this place. Although they've had the same decor for as long as I can remember, and their no-frills dining area is as big as my living room and in DESPERATE need of remodeling, and you're considered lucky if your table is wiped clean before you're seated, I'd rather dine in because for some reason the food doesnt taste as good when you're taking it "to-go". But parking and waiting for a table is a b*****. They dont take reservations and I remember for the longest time, it was cash only. I remember one time I didn't have enough cash to leave a tip and so I left my change on the table and the offended waiter chased me outside with my $0.75 yelling, "Here's your money. I dont need your money!" Thank goodness they dont remember me cuz I eat here quite frequently.
Pros:
-Even if it's dirt cheap,I wouldn't recommend the sushi- but the bento's are quite good. The chicken teriyaki is not burnt people, and the sauce is thick and sweet the way it's supposed to be.
-It's cheap. I dont think the portions are THAT huge but I guess they must be cuz everyone keeps saying so. You can get a 2 or 3 item bento for under $9-$10.
-They're pretty quick. You won't spend 2 hours there waiting for your food.
Cons:
-It is a little dirty. I dont want to think about what goes on in the back kitchen. Thank goodness I've never had a cockroach in my food like some of the other reviewers but I wouldnt doubt it. It IS one of those hole-in-the-wall type places.
-Parking is a hassle.
-If you're going to dine in, beat the rush or expect to wait a while.
-They operate during some weird hours sometimes.
Also, I've noticed that they've been raising their prices lately. This is one of those places that have survived for a long time cuz it's dirt-cheap. You totally get your money's worth but with these raised prices, I've got to think twice now. WTF.....
For some odd reason, this is my parents' absolute favorite Japanese restaurant.
Me: "Where do you want to eat for your birthday, Mom?"
Mom: "Akagi!"
I think they enjoy it because of A) affordability and B) they have generous portions, especially their bento boxes.
It's been a good 7 years since I've been to this place, until yesterday when my co-workers decided to eat here. A bit hesitant, I agreed.
Right when I walked in, I was overcome with nostalgia. Visions of that 12 year old girl bored out of her mind, sitting in between her Mom & her Dad on that tight wooden bench waiting for our name to be called filled my head and it was actually a good feeling!
I ordered their California bento box which came with 3 shrimp tempura & veggie tempura, 3 pieces of California roll and chicken teriyaki. All bento boxes come with rice, a side salad and miso soup. It was way too much food for me, but the taste was actually quite decent, especially for $9!
Now I feel kinda guilty for laughing at my parents' love for Akagi. To make up for it, I think I'll treat them out to dinner here for Father's Day.
I've been visiting this place for years. I always order the bento teryaki/tempura combo. Its a no-frills place, but the prices are great and portions are big. Its a good choice for lunch- I think three of us ate for $20, you can't beat that price. I haven't tried any of the sushi, but I definitely recommend the Bento box combos
This used to be a favorite of mine back when I was in high school. But I haven't gone back here since because I've found other spots to get my Japanese food fix. I didn't hate their food though, otherwise I wouldn't have gone there on a weekly basis back then. My usual there was their chicken katsu / chicken teriyaki / mixed tempura combo. And that's pretty much all I had with the occasional eel roll and California roll thrown in. It's really nice to see that this place is still around after all these years. Food is cheap here and you'll definitely get full.
I came here last week with my newly found bud Brian. Onto the food:
Wow...well for 9 bucks it wasn't bad, I ordered a tuna sashimi and chicken teriyaki combination. There were actually a lot of people there. Good sign right? Misleading, I must say.
Although the portions were generous, the chicken was burned, and the tuna sashimi was not cut correctly (it had tendons inside, all of them). It was cut a little high. Well, ya'll know I rate on the food quality, so for this time, definitely 2 stars when you mess up on chicken and tuna like that.
I've been coming here for several years now. It's a real good place if you're one for bento boxes. They give good portions and the food tastes good. It's also about $9.00 even for dinner, where as other japanese restaurants would charge 15-20$ for the same thing. I really like the food here because i always leave with a full and satisfied stomach.
Reason for 4-stars. Lately, many of the waiters have turned to latino people. The only japanese person i see there is this japanese lady. And as i've came here for years, this "new lineup" of waiters aren't as service friendly and attentive as the previous ones. Many times i try to get their attention while they chat with what seems like their friends for 5 minutes straight. It also took them 15 minutes to bring me a glass of water. This place also isn't as crowded as it used to be.
So, I enjoyed this place more than I thought I would. I was told by my friends that this place was cheap, and that it wasn't going to be like "OMG WOW" sushi or anything, but quite honestly, I thought this was close to it ... especially since the whole place looks like someone put some tables and chairs in their basement and decided to call it a Japanese restaurant.
All I can say is that I got two rolls and a tempura appetizer for under 15 bucks. I thought that was pretty cool. I was a little scared of what the maguro would look/taste like, but I was quite surprised. For 2.95 I got a tekka roll that was quite tasty, and I also got the mixed roll (hamachi, salmon, tuna) which I have to say was quite big to put in my mouth, but it was still good. The pieces in that thing were pretty huge and the fish was oh so freakin' fresh. The pieces I didn't get in my mouth I ate as sashimi, and with my humongously large side order of rice that was only a dollar, it was pretty damn good.
So, Akagi Restaurant, you have surprised me, and I will most definitely coming back for possibly the sashimi. But not so much the tempura. I most likely will not be ordering it again. Too much breading.
Sushi is like a horror movie, exciting, mind boggling, and might even make you get up and run for the exit! However, just like any good horror movie, Sushi is only good when done right!
Akagi Restaurant in San Bruno is nothing like "The Excorist" but rather "Scream 2" a respectable but somewhat disappointing movie.
First off the parking here is nothing short of atrocious! The parking lot across the street is at maybe a 35 Degree slope, you better have strong arms for closing or opening the door.
Akagi may be crowded, but the wait isn't usually bad. One drawback however is dealing with the eccentric waitress lady (you know who she is) who obviously has a problem understanding the concept of distance. You can be right in front of her, but she'll yell at you with everything she has, thinking you are 22 kilometers away!
Now for the food! The bento box is awesome! Great price for 2 or 3 items and a great choice of items. I usually go with the Sashimi, Beef Teriyaki, and the California Roll. The bento box, in horror movie terms, is the "Sixth Sense" with the Sixth Sense being the sense of finding a great bargain! The Sushi is overpriced and pretty "Plane Jane"! It isn't up to par with High-End Sushi restaurants, but it isn't as bad as Pak N' Save Sushi. Akagi Sushi would be "White Noise" in horror movie terms.
The Sushi is pretty Horrific, the bento box is frighteningly good, and the overall experience (Like any good horror film) leaves you wanting more. So check out Akagi for a hell of a time! Happy Halloween Yelpers!
(This review was written March 23, 2009)
Akagi is about as lo-fi as can be -- from the no frills dining room, right down to the transistor radio playing old school tunes. Yeah, they're keepin' it real. What it lacks in atmosphere, it more than makes up for in value, so I keep my expectations in check. I've been eating there for 17 years and I have never been disappointed by their sushi. The fish is fresh, the rolls are huge and the prices are about as low as I've seen. They always treat me like a rock star and I love 'em for it! Thanks Akagi, for you are the seaweed beneath my sashimi!
PROS: Great food (big portions) / Reasonable price
CONS: Busy place - sometimes have to wait a long time to be seated / No parking.
Overall 4 stars. Great place to take your co-workers out for lunch and Great place for Dinner to take your Family & Friends to.
If you are in need of Japanese food and do not want to spend too much, this is the place to go.
Combination (bento boxes) are such a deal! For the two-item bento box, I choose salmon teriyaki and tuna sashimi! All this with rice, miso soup, and salad for $7.95.
Miso Soup: Too much salt, I wish there was tofu in it. Aw.
Salmon Teriyaki: The glaze was too thick and too salty. Too much cornstarch in the house.
Tuna sashimi: FRESH FRESH AND TASTY.
Salad: did someone dilute the dressing?
DO NOT GET THE ROLLS: they were like 4 pieces. The rice is very dry and it doesn't hold together very well.
One stars off for too much salt in miso and sauces, for sad rolls--4 pieces, and those tea kettles that are badly designed--water spills every time you poor tea.
I have been going to this place for 15 years. Yes, thank you; I have been going there more years than I have actually aged!
It is a little whole in the wall; but those are the best! Their sushi is always good; always fresh and at bargain prices.
I love the little yellow pickles in the bento too!
This review is from a visit a few years back.
Ate at the tiny Sushi bar in the back, because the place is always packed with cheap ass people that will eat anything that is half decent and dirt cheap.
Why the one star? Well how about a freakin cockroach that ran out of my wife's salad from her Bento Box. No joke. I tried to kill the roach with my chopsticks, but the bugger ran under the refrigeration unit on the sushi bar counter before I could kill it.. He turned around and was looking at me! I started to get chills and wanted to get the F out! I told the waitress about the cockroach and she told me I didn't have to pay for my wife's food, but I had to pay for mine "since there was no cockroach in my food". My bill was like $10.00. I wasn't in the mood to fight, so I just paid the $10.00 (no tip) and I never returned.
Mr. Burglecutt
P.S. Another thing is the Mexican waiters and bus boys always put a supply of chopsticks in their back pocket! That is so low class and disgusting!
P.P.S. Yes, the chopsticks in the back pocket next to their ass! If you like the waiters ass? Have at it! No thanks!

I rather starve to death than eat at this shit hole!
Ol' faithful. I forget how much I like this place. The biggest bang for your buck, PERIOD. Considering how much you pay for food, you probably shouldn't expect much. People need to lighten up! It serves its purpose... quenches the hankering for Japanese food. And, with this economy, I bet this establishment will thrive leaving more costly places begging for more business.
Get the tempura and nikanugi (spelling?), which is the beef, onion, and glass noodle dish. It's very good. That's our regular.
Sat in the back sushi bar for the first time. Completely different experience. They really *really* need to replace the sushi counter -- the formica surface is horribly sticky -- I think it's just because the surface is de-laminiated, but it has the feel that it hasn't been cleaned in months.

Bento Box for under 8 bucks cant be beat!!! the chiken was good, just a little fatty bust very good, The miso soup was great as was the tempura, the place is a little plan looking but if I want to look at things I will bring my dvd player!!!!! You are not eating at first class joint, but for the price I cannot complain!!!!!
This is a great place to come to for generous portioned bento boxes at a super affordable price. The Tempura and Mackerel is my favorite. But I've tried almost everything here and it's pretty decent if you catch the meat on a non-dry night. The only thing I wouldn't suggest is Sushi. California Rolls are a safe bet, but I have tasted the fish to be a little "off" so you may wanna stick to the bentos. Always packed and might be a bit of a wait but definitely worth it especially for being so reasonable.
As mentioned in previous reviews, this place is only good for their bentos. Its a great deal as far as quantity since they give you mucho stuff to munch on. The taste is EH...kinda gets dull after the second over battered shimp tempura.
I use to eat here , so I came back to see how it is.
My son and his friend and I went there .
Combo dinners for 2 items - 7.95, combo dinners for 3 items - 9.95.
You will get a wide choice of selections .
my son got Beef Teriyaki and chicken teriyaki, I got beef teriyaki and tempura, son's friend got Momijee -beef ribs, tempura.
We also each got rice, salad, pickled cucumber and miso soup.
I thought the food was great. For the price the food is good.
son liked the beef , said the chicken was a little dry.
Son's friend liked all of it.
Low cost Japanese eats here.
it's inexpensive; lots of noisy people.
It's not good food, its filling and inexpensive.
It's a lot of food for 8 bucks; what do you expect ?
Mexicans make the best Japanese food.
Been coming here for years, and yes its not the fanciest place. Read some past reviews, and yes the waiters/busboys DO keep chopsticks and napkins in their pockets to make it more time efficient when setting up the table. The green tea DOES taste like soap. Yes, only the fried greasy food taste good, their sushi is just rolls of rice.

Akagi has been a family favorite for several years now, and i have to say that this place really does have good food for a great value. I still have tasted better then Akagi, but for the price you pay, you can't beat it. The only downfall is that you pay for the environment you eat in. Even after going through a new owner, the place is very plain with white paint and no decorations...and for some reason, their men's bathroom freaks me out.
This restaurant used to be good (went there from '91 to '02). From 2003 and after, the food truly sucked!!! They utilized incompetent/inexperienced cooks. Also noticed several other customers ordered their meals barely even touched. I rather go to melaka's 4 or 5 doors to the right.
Whenever I'm feeling some cheap, local Japanese food, I always think of Akagi. Since, it is rather small, whenever you visit there is almost guaranteed wait. Parking is accessible. Most of the time, I'll find myself getting a bento box as they are very tasty and definitely worth what you're paying for. My regular bento box includes salad, rice, Chicken Katsu, California Rolls, and tempura all for under 10 bucks. The dressing for the salad isn't too sweet. I'm not a big fan of fried foods, but the Chicken Katsu in particular comes with a sauce that is rather different in taste from other Japanese restaurant...or maybe it's just me. Although the rice that comes in their California Rolls are excessive, I can't really complain since I only eat basic sushi anyway.
I like to think of Akagi as a fast food version of Japanese food. You're basically in and out. There is no decor. Simple table and chairs and they give you plastic forks to use when eating. Why? I don't know. Maybe they got tired of washing the dishes? I'm assuming they wash the bento boxes and plates so I don't get why they give you plastic forks because you would think that would be the easiest to wash out of the utensils.
Quality taste at an unbelievable price.
No frills with this place - you don't come here for the ambiance - and they don't get fancy with the maki (rolls) either; they have the basic last time I was there: dragon, spider...etc. We'll try the sushi bar next time and I'll let you know - also, the tuna sashimi was pretty good, tasted fresh.
The initial pull to this place for me was how their chicken teriyaki tasted, SERIOUSLY - essentially, it tasted grilled (not out of the microwave, like most places I've been to). That's it. Been going there since then, plus you can't beat the price of their combination lunch/dinner - less than $8, if my memory serves me right.
The service is...good. What I mean is, they're too busy to keep a look out in making sure your glass is brimming. Once seated, ask for hot tea (you get the pot) and whatever you're drinking - they bring a tall glass anyway; and since the place isn't huge, you won't have a problem flagging down a waiter/waitress if you need another fill.
Anyhow, this place is great. As I always say, I wish they'd franchise - but that will lose the charm. It's just right.
[Lastly, on most nights, be prepared to be on a waiting list.]
Cheap and delicious Japanese food! The decor leaves something to be desired, but the food makes you forget all that. I was introduced to this wonderful place a couple years ago and I keep coming back. I've had Japanese all over the Peninsula and this isn't the best I've ever had but it is reliable. Sometimes there's a wait on weekend nights, but it's a very small restaurant (maybe 12 tables?). The service is good, always polite and friendly. They offer different combos and bento boxes that come with tons of food and cost around $7-$12. I love Akagi!
Totally hole in the wall place. From the outside, it looks like the whole experience will be crap but the food's actually pretty good. REAL cheap too. I always get a bento with tuna sashimi and chicken teriyaki. The tuna sashimi is amazing. I love it. Too bad my whole bento couldn't consist of tuna sashimi.
Finally a sushi place for me! :)
Can't beat the price!
Their service is great. I sat at the counter and the chef cracked jokes with me the entire time.
I even got full.
I had a bunch of stuff including octopus and sashimi.
Usually when I east sushi, I end up spending well over $40 but this is a place where I can get it for under $10.
Is it the best sushi?
No but it is pretty damn good and the prices are great.
Great place to go for affordable, yet good, Japanese food.
I've been coming here for several years now and they've improved on decor a little, but nothing spectacular. Somewhat a hole in the wall restaurant but packs a good punch. Nestled in between two other shops, this place can be found in sunny San Bruno close to both 280/380/101.
Plenty of parking IMO. Weekends and Friday nights are a challenge though. Mainly street parking and two lots really close by. One is across the street, the other is a very short walk away. The one across the street is quite large. I can't say that for the other one.
Outside it doesn't look like much, and neither does the inside. Mostly plain white walls. Visible wooden rafters. Quite small seating only about 30 people at a time. There is a clipboard you MUST sign in on when you walk in. If you don't on a busy night, you'll go unseen as the bus boy just reads off the clip board when a table frees up, which you can totally see yourself since the place isn't big at all. It's "cozy". Not so much cozy where you are rubbing elbows with strangers, but you are close enough to her others conversations.
Tables could be cleaner. I've been here on a few occasions where the table top was sticky since it's coverd with a quarter inch think plastic overlay. Untensils and dishes are clean though. I despise plastic cups, but that is what they roll with. Same goes with their forks and kinves... plastic.
The menu has a bunch of your typical Japanes food choices, with a few in house specials scattered throughout the menu. The prices are very good! I was able to get an Akagi roll, and a mixed sushi plate, while and my date got a bento box, and I still left there paying less than $20! Really great deal. The portions are excellent, and the presentation doesn't look like it was just thrown all together.
The wait staff could be more attentive though. We only saw our waitress when ordering, dropping off our food, and for the bill. We got more help with the bus boy when requesting forks and refills on water.
Overall, great place to get good cheap Japanese food, without that cheap presentation or taste.
I don't care how cheap the food is, if a restaurant sucks, its sucks. The service was terrible! The waitress went to 2 other tables that were seated after us that weren't even ready to order before we finally had to call her over to get some service. To add further insult, before we or even the 2 tables that ordered before us were done, we wanted to ask for some water but she immediately came over and gave us our check. What the hells? We get it, you want us to leave and so in return you'd also like a crappy tip.
And for some reason, every container (tea, soy sauce) spilled whatever you tried to pour out of it. I would never eat at this janky place ever again.
This little popular hole-in-the-wall restaurant used to be one of my favorite Japanese bargain bites in the Peninsula when I was younger. Cheap combination meals that are quite good. My palate has developed a lot since then so the food is not quite as good as it used to be but I'd still be down to go here to grab a cheap meal.
One major con of this restaurant is that it can be very difficult just placing a take-out order because so many other people are calling in as well. If you do call in for a take-out be prepared to wait five minutes on hold before they even take your order. Sometimes they won't even pick up the phone because they are so busy.
Akagi is like a bare christmas tree during the holidays. It's there to serve its purpose without the glitz, glamour and warmth. If you're hungry and want a quick bite, Akagi is a decent spot to go to if you're around the area. It gets busy at times but the wait is quick. Everybody seems to be in and out fast.
The rainbow roll was unexpectingly good. The hamachi, salmon and tuna all looked and tasted quite appetizing. Even the saba nigiri was above average.
The bento boxes are decent. You can order a box with a choice of two items for $7.95 or the three choice one for $8.95. I didn't really enjoy the short ribs but the chicken katsu is good. Beef teriyaki has been tough and chewy in the past. The salad is ok. And you get around five pieces of tempura.
Soft Shell Crab Review: Good size soft shell crab. But they use regular tempura batter and the crab is served with regular tempura dipping sauce. I'll take a pass on this one.
The restaurant is quite bare bones; nothing really catches the eye. You can sit at the sushi bar to eat. The area is very tight at back of the restaurant. The bathroom is kinda dirty and claustrophoic. Just check out the photo posted for this restaurant. 'Nuff said.
Made it back via the take out menu. I have a bad cold and I needed MISO soup to make me feel somewhat human again.
The take out menu had 2 kid options both at $3.75. Chicken Teryaki, rice, 1 piece tempura plus salad or sushi which was 3 cal rol, inari and crab.
I got my miso and the kids got different take out. Everything was as yummy as I remember. Why the 1 star off?? Styrofoam......

I like this place because my husband and I can have a satisfying dinner for $25 (without alcohol) and still have leftovers to take home. It's affordable, basic Japanese fast food. The dinners come with soup and salad, and if you order beer or sake, they give you free edamame (as they should, but not all places do this). You will get better sushi in Japan town, but for the price, it's not bad.
I took my Japanese friend here once and she ordered the hamachi kama, which I think is the fish cheek part. She tells me it's hard to find places that serve that.
We have been going here for over 13 years, and I think it has gotten better in the past year (um, yeah sometimes we will go two nights in a row).
