The elevators are super quick. I like that.
The tubs drain properly and when they don't, the front desk staff gets the drain fixed spit spot!
    In unit washer and dryer!
I felt safe returning at night.
Week day continental breakfast with oatmeal, apples, yogurt, and hot chocolate.
    Big windows perfect for spying.
    Gym on the first floor.
    Friendly front desk.
    Free wifi in your room!
    Excellent A/C unit control.
    Molten Brown toiletries!!! *fancy*

    Bummers but not deal breakers:
Low water pressure in the shower.
Missing vanity light bulb in 415.
Missing kitchen drawer handle in 206.
    Scuffed closet walls.
Tilty TV unit in the living room in 709.
Big windows for spying (it goes both ways).

On a recent 3-week business trip to the DC area, the AKA was home. I stayed there January 3 through January 20 and had a pretty good experience. So why didn't I give this hotel 4 stars? Well, I just kept being torn. For every good thing, there seemed to be a negative. So let me break this down:

    Service & Staff:
All right. Not overly amazing but sufficient. They were responsive when I requested the drain be fixed for my bath tub and never failed to wish me a good day when I left in the morning for work (albeit in a somewhat fake-cheerful way that grated on me...but then again, I am not a morning person). What did turn me off, though, was that one morning when I came down to wait in the lobby on a co-worker, I heard the front desk girl very condescendingly scolding one of the maintenance staff. Granted, he may have deserved it (it seemed that he was getting ripped a new one about being 20 minutes late to work) but what I found very unprofessional was the way she laid in to him right in front of me. It wasn't like they were off to the side. I was sitting right in front of the welcome desk and she was yelling at him right there behind it. I know this has nothing to do with the service I received, per se, but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Housekeeping staff was about 50/50. You should know that AKA only cleans their guest suites one day a week and thus, I only had 2 staff to judge it by. My first clean was very thorough and this staff member even started my washer and dishwasher for me so that I had clean dishes and clothes when I arrived home. While the second staff member also started the dish washer, she/he neglected to clean my tub and sink. Not a big deal, since I had bought my own cleaner to get me through, but I still expected that since it was only one day per week that the clean would be deep.

    Decor/Room:
The Lobby and bar area were very well appointed. Very modern and chic. The rooms themselves are actually 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and are decorated in neutral tones and in a very clean and modern way. The space was wonderful for the price and it truly made my stay MUCH more comfortable not to be crammed into a bedroom but to have an actual living space. The bed was very comfortable and I really enjoyed the sleep CD that was provided. Made for some very restful nights!

Each suite has a full kitchen and I really appreciated the quality appliances and dishware. All in all, I was very happy with the amenities.

My one complaint is that the rooms looked a little worse for the wear. The walls are white so they show every smudge and they looked pretty battered. What made this worse was that I found out the building had only been open since November and had not even had its grand opening yet. The walls are also quite thin and you will hear your neighbors and definitely the garbage trucks in the morning.

    Price:
I am a federal employee, so receive the government rate for whatever city I will be in when I travel for business. Thus, my rate was the same as it would have been at any other hotel in town. From that end, if you are a federal employee, this is a GREAT value! HOWEVER: Beware the freakishly high drink prices at the lobby bar. I wanted to have a nightcap down there more often, but it was WAY too expensive...and not warranted. Sorry...if I am spending $14 on a glass of wine, it had better be damn good!

Overall, I had a good experience at AKA. While 3 stars may seem a little low, I have to defend that by saying that I just wasn't blown away. It was certainly somewhere I would stay again and definitely if in DC for a long period of time, but it wasn't top of the line.

I stayed here for about a month and I really don't know why anyone would choose to stay at a hotel with only 200sq feet when they can get an apartment here for the same daily rate and an extra 1000sq feet to spare. Breakfast included-(excluding weekends)

The decoration is very modern and includes all the amenities you would want and fully stocked kitchen. The best part is having a washer/dryer in the unit. My main concern was having a window in the bedroom and April (the mgr) upgraded me for the same rate to a 2 bedroom. It was great! I also recommended the place to a friend who will be staying there for 4 months-He was upgraded to a 2 bedroom as well, including parking.

The only problem I had with this place was the lack of water pressure in the shower. It shouldn't be a big problem for short stays or for men but after a month I was ready to leave. I still give them 5 stars b/c they were very accomodating and location was great. Close to Red/Blue/Orange lines and the best nightime jogging next to the White House and the monuments, which is always safe with all the SS agents.

I stayed here for two weeks and have mixed feelings about this place.  The flats are roomy, very clean, well decorated, and comfortable.  Continental breakfast is served Monday through Friday but is nothing more than muffins, oatmeal, and coffee.  It's not bad but don't come expecting the works.  Internet is free and fast, each room with its own wireless router.  There is a small gym on the first floor but if you are an avid weight lifter, you might to find a local location of the gym you are a member of as the dumbbells only go up to 27.5 lbs.  The staff is nice and welcoming but seems to be shy in numbers.  There is usually just one person sitting at the front counter which leads me to believe they have a very small support staff.

Here are my only two real complaints. 1. The elevators in this building are incredibly loud. My room was not very close to the elevators and they were so loud that they woke me up every week day when everyone was leaving for work.  You can hear the zooming up and down through the walls.  I should note that none of the walls to my flat were connected to the elevators.  2. My flat was at the back of the building where it faced tall office buildings.  Privacy is not the issue here, it's the noise coming from the workers below.  If the garbage man wasn't causing a ruckus, which echoed through surrounding buildings, or the service workers yelling , then it was the 4, yes 4 jack hammers breaking concrete on the ground below.  This was incredibly loud! I know this is not a regular occurrence, I would just advise you to get a flat that is facing the street and not the buildings in the rear.

Cheap for Washington, DC.  These are apartment style accommodations, meaning you get 1.5 baths, and a full small kitchen.  Service is pretty lackluster - the employees here are young and more concerned with texting their boyz than catering to the clien

Thought we had found a diamond in the rough.  Turns out it was coal.  While the setup of the room was nice, the hotel is loud with a lot of construction.  Had to nearly kick in my room door it stuck so bad.  Work starts outside the hotel at 5:30am and you hear every bit of it.  Lobby is under construction with dust all over.  Overlooked all of this until staff was EXTREMELY unflexible.  Hurricane and birth in the family was not enough to justify change in itinerary.  Thought I would recommend, now never coming back.  Make sure you read the fine print....TWICE.
