13 reviews for AKA Spot
I used to purchase Meekos' grub here religiously because the rescue group recommended all natural dog food for him. The prices are great for their dog food as well as their doggy treats. They even have a wide selection of doggy and cat outfits, collars, beds, toys and even a freezer with raw food options.
If this place had better service and parking I would surely give it 4 or 5 stars but the fact of the matter is, the people that work here are not knowledgeable about pets (I feel petsmart has smarter staff when it comes to animal care) and have a really bad attitude. Not just occasionally, but every time I go in there. Accordingly, I've stopped getting Meeko's food from there and researched a good dog food product available at Harris Teeter. If I need a bone or something and am in the area I will stop by, but AKA Spot offers nothing that I would just make a special trip for.
Petsmart trumps.
Excellent store. This is a great place to come by if your looking for something special for Toby. I have to say I really liked the collection of toys. Something a little more special than you'd find at your regular grocery or even pet store.
Sure the prices, will make it so you'll buy something once once in a while. But it is fun to peruse around the store.
Great store! The merchandise a little pricey, but that's to be expected.
They have a self-serve dog wash in the back. $15 for small dogs $20 for large dogs. You can use all the soaps, conditioners, brushes, and towels your heart desires and don't need to clean up a thing when you are done.
My dog has long black fur, so washing her at my house gets MESSY, so this is a great option instead of having to pay for a groomer every month or two.
Wonderful store with a friendly helpful staff
I drove to Arlington from the District to pick up a dog bed here, but ended up leaving empty-handed because the service was so snotty. Note to the owners: You are not Cartier, so there's no reason to be condescending. You don't sell diamonds, you sell dog bones! Needless to say, I won't be returning.
Note: Even my yellow Lab wasn't thrilled about this place, and there were doggie treats at every turn. That should tell you something.
Great selection of foods and items. If you want the RIGHT food for your pet (i.e. no by-products or chicken beaks), this is the place. Its not cheap, for one, because its actually the good stuff. The staff is friendly and personable, and will chat with you about your animal and their needs. Someone said pretentious, that's odd, in fact just plain wrong, they genuinely seem to want to help you choose what you want but maybe just aren't positive about. Great place.
I love this place and it is sometimes a destination when my dog and I take walks. E.g. last week, my puppy had an upset stomach and they stocked the Solid Gold Seameal I needed for him. So we took a nice, long walk over to them. Their inventory is great and I love the leather leash, Easy Walk harnesses, and sweaters I have gotten for him. It's not cheap but it's not outrageous either. They stock the great food like Innova, Wellness, Merrick etc. I love that this store is in my neighborhood.
Anyone who has read my reviews knows that I tend to lean favorably towards places that pamper pets. AKA Spot is no exception. Another prime spot to visit if you like to give your pets the best of the best.
A few things to note about AKA Spot.
First, they moved to a new location a couple of months ago and I am really excited to say that this location is TONS better than their last - much roomier and it seems like they have more stuff. Don't be confused if you head over there and find yourself in the Clarendon suburbs- the new place is in a cute little yellow house.
Second, AKA Spot has dog ice cream!!! Buy it once and your puppy will be addicted. I bought my dog peanut butter ice cream for her birthday (don't laugh) she loved it!
Third, this place has a great selection of DURABLE toys. If you have a pet that likes to chew holes in toys these will keep them occupied for a while.
Lastly, if you can't make it over to the store check out their website because they allow you to shop online.... very handy
Cool stuff as far as doggie boutique goes. They decided to jump on the "natural pet foods" bandwagon (of which there are few establishments out there that are actually studied in this). Anyway, cool boutique shop with neat stuff for pets.
Their "grocery store," that now resides in their old location, is a waste of time. I went there in a rush one day and after driving up and down Wilson looking for parking, then paying for parking, no one was there. The door was locked and it was FREEZING out. I waited and waited. Finally someone showed up for work and they didn't have one thing I was looking for (salmon oil, sea meal, raw food). THEN, I asked the woman about certain products and she knew nothing about them. I hear now they're on the raw food bandwagon and carrying certain brands. There's nothing scarier than people that really don't understand the details of this type of feeding to be peddling it to the public.
If you need natural food that bad, call Nature's Nibbles. They'll deliver it (even the raw) right to your door.
I love the Spot - the people who work there are so very nice and informative. My only knock is that it's expensive. I went there recently to get a dog bed, and there was very little for less than $100. I ended up going to TJ Maxx and getting a big dog bed for $26.
That being said, my dog and I swing by there every time we need treats or dog food. I can rely on them to carry top of the line nutrition and they have a very useful self-serve dog wash when I don't want to clean my tub!
The selection was nice, but the service was questionable. At pet stores, I'm used to nice friendly customer service from people who not only like dogs but also like people...of all kinds. The workers were a lil "uppity" for my taste. For less classism and better customer service I'll stay to pet stores in the city. I've always liked Doggie Style in Dupont Circle.
I have always had good-to-great service here. I bought a beatiful leather collar there about a year ago for my Golden. People comment on it all the time, and I decided to get one for a friend. Turns out nylon sell much better than leather, so they don't carry the one I got anymore. BUT, the had three huge metal bucket thing-ys full of sale collars. The sales person dumped them all out and helped me go through the collars one-by-one. Eventually we found just what I was looking for. They do seem to mark up stuff a bit more that other places in the area. However I prefer to buy local as opposed to the Bog Box store chains.
This store is amazing. You have to see it to believe it.
