Milpitas, CA
Hands down the BEST pastrami sandwich I've ever had. They give you heaps of pastrami on this really nice toasted bread. We usually buy one for lunch...go to Safeway and buy some Dutch Crunch & spinach and make another sandwich -- that's how much pastrami there is.
I believe Living Social or Groupon has a deal with this place. -
Review from Lisa K.
I wasn't expecting anything phenomenal but I WAS expecting good sandwiches and was fairly disappointed. I will say that all the employees were really friendly and hard-working.
The bread was subpar, dry, and tasted like day-old supermarket stuff. The toppings were nice and fresh (nice lettuce, green peppers and tomato), but somehow the default mix they have doesn't really match with what I would like - cucumbers, jalapenos, or pepperoncini are $0.46 each? Similarly, none of the suggested sandwich combos really struck my fancy, so I felt like I like a different type of sandwich than is offered here.
As I've come to expect, the meatball sandwich was not very good. The preparation was nice and hot with melted provolone everywhere, but the meatballs themselves were weirdly homogeneous packed, pureed lumps. Oh well. -

Let's be clear, I've had one thing here, the best meatball sandwich I've ever had. I'm sure there are other great sandwiches, but I don't get over there enough to try them. If they are as good as the meatball then you can't go wrong. So far they've never had an "off" day.
Try to get there at 11:45 or earlier before they get really busy. They are very fast.
The hoagie rolls are toasted perfectly, the cheese is melty and the meatballs and a bit of sauce meaty and full of tomato chunks. -

Pastrami! Great place to get a good sandwich for lunch that fits quite well into my hole in the wall list. It gets crowded but the service is quick and the staff are both helpful and friendly to everyone.
The bread was toasted just right and the pastrami gives me naughty thoughts that I'm not going into detail with on Yelp. There were quite a few options for both the meat lovers and vegetarians alike. I'm saving the fifth star for when I try their griddle items but for the sandwich this is worth the trip. -

i drove by this place for years and never went in. From the outside it doesnt look like it would be anything special. FInally one day i decieded to try it and now i go there for lunch 2-3 times a week. there is parking out front so that make life really easy. food is always on point so you can always expect the same quality. they have great specials on a weekly basis! Service is great as well! Def recommend this place!

Freshness: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Bread: 4/5 (toasted seeded roll, nice!)
Taste: 3/5
Hoagie Sauce: 3/5 vinegar-like sauce
It's nice to see that a deli in the city has inside seating, which was why I decided to try this place in the first place. It had a lot of good things going for it, but I wasn't wowed by any the combination of sandwiches they offered. Because there wasn't anything necessarily appealing, I decided try what they said was most popular - Chris's Combo. It was decent and tasted fresh, but not amazing. It's only open on the weekdays and not somewhere I drive out of my way for, but if I worked nearby, I would not avoid.
I must say though that the front counter service was really good though. -

Decided to order delivery here on a day off (unfortunately I work nowhere nearby and they're closed on weekends) and man that was a good sandwich--I got the hot pastrami on a soft roll with spicy mustard. Huge portions and good meat (which seems to be bizarrely hard to come by in SF). Only downside was the fries which were so-so, but you take your chances getting fries for delivery. If I ever work from home, will definitely consider getting delivered for lunch...

I really liked it... Had the infamous Pastrami Sando... There were about 12 people in line to order when I walked in at 1pm... I'd recommend ordering over the phone in advance to save time... Although that will prob mean I have to wait longer for my sandwich next time... YUMMMY!

This sandwich shop is a bit far for people doing jury duty, and the freeway intersection is dangerous. Safer to come down 8th street. It's worthwhile, if u want really great sandwiches for under $7 each. http://s3yelp2-a.akama... Located just a block away from SO restaurant. And yes, this place is related to AK Meats sandwich shop on Clement & 25th Ave. The space inside is clean, with plenty of tables. http://s3yelp1-a.akama... Service was cordial and efficient, not exactly friendly. But that's good enough for me.
Here's a few food pics to salivate over:
- The pastrami is excellent and delicious! it's NY style, navel cut (that means it has a little strip of fat). http://s3yelp2-a.akama...
- Maria Melt (tuna and cheddar) http://s3yelp3-a.akama...
- Die's Decadence (turkey, swiss and avocado) http://s3yelp2-a.akama...Listed in: Sandwiches for lunch

I'd say this is my second favorite sandwich place after Ikes. The bread is fantastic and they don't skimp on the fillings. The pastrami was to die for. I highly recommend it!

straight good. Used a Scoutmob discount and would totally come back for full price. If it wasn't for the awkward location I would come here more often.
BTW the BBQ sandwich is the bomb-diggity!! -

San Francisco, CA
Damn, why didn't I come here sooner?! First found out about this place on scoutmob. Asked some coworkers about AK Subs and they said it was pretty good so off we went for lunch on friday! We left work at 12 and got here at the perfect time cause right after we sat down with our sandwiches, a bunch of others came in.
Once we walked in, I had a good feeling about this place. The shop smelled so good from all the sandwiches warming in the oven right before being called out and when I looked up at the menu, I was surprised to see such affordable prices. I ordered Die's Decadence, which is a turkey sandwich with avocado and a whole bunch of veggies. I got it hot and on a wheat roll. Took one bite, and it was bursting with flavor. The sandwich was heated PERFECTLY. The bread had a thin layer of crunchy on the outside with a soft and warm interior. It had the perfect amount of filling so it wasn't a complete mess to eat. I don't like raw onions, but the onions were sliced so thinly that I didn't mind them at all. I asked for no mayo and received no mayo and a non-dry sandwich. YUM.
The woman at the cashier was really nice and warm. I wanna pick her up and put her in my pocket. There was also an expeditor when the line got a little lengthy. Took a peek behind the counter and they had a nice system goin on. Sandwich gets put together, handed off to the counter where it waits to be wrapped (if it's for to-go), gets wrapped, and passed off to it's rightful owner. Because of this, it's only a few minutes from when you pay to when you get to sink your teeth into your sub.
3 Coworkers got the philly, 1 ordered a salami sandwich, and 2 got hot pastramis. All looked just as satisfied as me.
I WANT ANOTHER!!! -

Is it bad to say I've been here 3 times in the past week?
I've seriously worked in this area for the past 3 years and have only now stepped into this place. Thank god they reassure you that I wasnt the only one.
Solid sandwiches and excellent customer service. And quality grub available in the early AM for folks like me who have lunch at 9am. -
Review from Michael L.

"....half way home and my pager still blowing up, today I didn't even have to use my AK, I have to say it was a good day...". Ice Cube's lyrics came to mind as I walked into AK Subs.
A standard menu of all your favorite subs. I had to order a couple sandwiches and potato salad to give a well rounded review.
So I ordered the Tony's Pastrami and a roast beef sandwich. They definitely don't skimp on the meat. Tonys pastrami was greasy, salty, meaty grub. Definitely a man's sandwich. Roast beef is everything you would expect in a good sub. Potato salad was ok. Overall, a very good spot when you have your sub cravings.
So I guess for me. Today I had to use my AK, I have to say it was a good day.
Just a note: Don't eat your pastrami sub near your iPhone. I got pastrami jizz all over my iPhone at broke it. Fortunately Apple replaces pastrami jizz damage.. -

Fresh ingredients. Good selection of sandwiches. AND best of all, they will deliver in SOMA. My office will often order as a group when we need to work through lunch. They are fast too.
The only complaint is that I've received hot peppers on sandwiches when I asked not to. But, in SF it is so common for people to put jalapeños on everything, it is an understandable mistake to make occasionally.
Honestly, if you are looking for a fast, fresh, healthy lunch at a good price in SOMA, this is my go-to place. -
Review from liz c.
It's 12 noon right now. Lunch time. And my thoughts are consumed by the thought of consuming an AK Sub.
I tried this place because everyone at work raves about it and I didn't believe them because I take sandwiches a little too seriously. In the end, I am the loser for holding out on trying this place.
They know exactly what they're doing and they don't mess around with service or the quality of food. When I went to pick up my order, they were prompt and to the point, running like a well-oiled machine. I loved it - no waiting, no hassle, no confusion.
I got Die's Decadence on rye but it wasn't until I got back to my office that I knew what was waiting for me. On my way out, I settled on a cup of cream of broccoli and they gave me a large, warm baguette to go with it.
The sandwich was beautiful, like a new born baby. It was warm with toasted bread, mustard and mayo perfectly contained within the confines of the rye crust. Onions and lettuce peaking out just a little but not enough to make you have to shove it back in. It was just a supreme sandwich eating experience. And of course, because this SF, everything was super fresh and crunchy.
I need to go back. -

Tons of turkey. Warm wheat rolls. Bonus bell peppers. Chewy chocolate chip cookies. Super friendly service.
AK is better than A-OK. I'm firmly a four star fan.
Less stars for my attempts at alliteration. -

Highly recommend this place. Die's Decadence is one of my favorite sandwiches. It comes nice and big (about a foot long), no scrimping here. The avocado and mushrooms really make the sandwich stand out. Grab a nice bottle of Aloe Honey Dew drink and grub on!
I've tried the Pastrami sandwich and that is pretty good too. A little oily, but that is because they hook it up with the meat. Next on my list to try is the Philly cheesesteak! -

I went to school with a guy named AK. BIG dude. Built like he could crush Cadillacs with his bare hands! And he looked like a big Seal- not the kind you find at Pier 39, but the one married to Heidi Klum. I know, right?! Yum!
So trust me when I tell you these sandwiches are darn good! -

Eh, Ahu Freegin Kidin' Me?
I don't talk like that in real life and it took me five minutes to phonetically type that out but that was because I am not writing this whilst in AK Subs eating a fresssh hot pastrami on a hoogie roll with extra pickles, WHAT!
Its taken me for-ev-er to find a decent hot sandwich of any kind north of LA and this place has em in spades. Soooo many awful sandwich shops everywhere in the bay area, why?
Why also would anyone ever, even if intimidated, put teriyaki sauce on a cheesesteak? Or American cheese, I can make that at home, while we are at it,
fucking magnets how do they work anyway?
Sigh...I need to calm down or else I am gonna paint my face, gain 100lbs and get into a rap battle/slap fight with eminem, that's how ignorant sub-par sandwiches and their corresponding sandwich shops make me...sub-par...Do you want to make more money? Sure we all do? Have a Sandwich! -

Excellent sub shop and right around the corner, so I'm a bit biased.
I usually go for the cheesesteak and has always lived up to my expectation. Very friendly and upbeat staff, timely service (as long as the friendly staff isn't talking too long with a regular in front of you). SFPD can often be found having lunch there.
I do think it's about a buck on the pricey side at $7 out the door for just the sub w/o drink/chips.
Wish they were open weekends. -

A buddy took me to this tiny sandwich shop. I've driven by a thousand times, and never knew it was here.
He ordered a hot pastrami on seeded. I did the same. Well I can tell you I thoroughly enjoyed the toasted bread with melted cheese. The pastrami was not overly salty, and was moist and layered on thick.
We sat and ate, but most took out. We beat the lunch crowd, but the line we saw moved fast.
I will be back at a regular pace to try all the sandwiches on the menu. -

This place is tasty. Went there with a group of five people, everyone left happy and stuffed with a tasty sandwich. Parking is nearly impossible, but worth the hassle if you are in the City.
I ate the pastrami sandwich. It was exceptional. Prices are reasonable, marginally more expensive than togos but higher quality. -

When you move to a new office, it's always nice to know that there's a plethora of food nearby. Scary thing about 7th and townsend is that you look around and just dont' see much.
*trumpets* but that's why yelp is here! A few quick search changes and shablow, AK subs shows up as my new regular spot. Long lines, quick food and delicious options make this place another great gem amidst the ghetto surroundings.
My buddies got a cheesesteak and pastrami sandwich (seperate not on top of each other) and they both looked damn good. For some reason I went with a fish and fries instead. yummy, but ever so slightly less crispy than my fish/fries palate truly expects. STill, the fish was great and the fries rounded it out nicely.
I want to give em 5 (seriously i've never seen a line handled so efficiently) but I'll have to wait until I try an actual sammich to rank em that high.
thank god for delivery! I'll be back for sure. -
Review from Marti L.
Intense blue building that I've passed time after time exiting the freeway. Although at a janky location, the inside is bright and spacious. I was surprised by the consistently long line throughout lunch time.
Die's Decadence: Warm turkey with Swiss cheese, avocado, mushroom, sprout, lettuce, tomato and bell peppers served on my choice of three-seed roll. Lots of veggie and a good amount of turkey. The roll was absolutely delicious. Supreme crunchiness and toasty flavor from the seeds. Each ingredient was present in every bite. Indulgent yet without an ounce of guilt.
My test of a sandwich is in the ability to hold its shape and texture after a few hours. I usually save half of my sandwich for later, so it's important that it still tastes good. The Die's Decadence surpassed the test. I believe the three-seed roll played in huge part in this. After 5 hours, the veggies sweated a bit and no longer warm. But the roll was still ever so crunchy. I was truly amazed. Best leftover sandwich ever! =DListed in: Sandwiches & Burgers!

I can handle any malicious firearms .i.e. AK-47 assault- rifle.
But I'm not sure if I can handle another tasty sandwich from AK Subs.
The sandwich shop features their own creative sandwich specials without the crazy and explicit names like other sandwich shops.
For lunch, I had the Chris' Combo. For $6.39, the sandwich comprised with a combination of slices of fresh roast beef, turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and spicy bell peppers in a toasted hoagie roll. You can get my sandwich or any customized sandwiches hot or cold. And, if your have extra money and/or extra hungry, you certainly can add extra topping(s) with your sandwich, in which I took two thick slices of bacon for additional $1.00. The sandwich is really good and the price is competitively reasonable too.
Purchased separately and not including the meal, I also had a bottle of Honest Tea and a bag of Kettle Chips with my meal for extra charge.
The deli is somewhat small with workers in the SoMa area enjoying their meals and listening 94.9 "The Wild" Workout at noon. "Oh yeah, listening to Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull's annoying jam is what we need to enjoy our meal."
Credit cards are accepted but a $.50 extra fee is charged. The place is only open on the weekdays till 4pm.Listed in: Approaching my 1,300th review

This place is really different from your typical sandwich spot, and I've been to quite a few. Portions are huge, the ingredients taste really fresh, food is flavorful and the service is awesome. Everything I've had so far was delicious. I'm always find myself making yummy noises whenever I eat here. Can't wait to try the other items on the menu!

For $5, I purchased the HomeRun deal worth $10 in sandwiches. I got the Willy's Philly sandwich and my friend designed her own turkey sub. Both were so yummy. The bread was fresh and the ingredients were healthy and full of flavor. We were in and out in 5 minutes and, after eating my food, I was happy and pleasantly full!

Really, really good subs. First time today, will definitely be back for more. Not as good as Yellow Sub or Sub Center or even Geno's, but definitely worth a visit. Prices are very reasonable (about $6.50) for a special.
Today I tried 4 subs:
1) Pastrami - awesome meat and delicious. Will be back for more.
2) Combo- Roast beef/ham/turkey - great combination of flavor
3) Christians Chicken- the breast was flavorful and juicy
4) Decadence (turkey) - didn't try it but my son and wife seemed to like it as they devoured it and didn't speak during the sesson.
Already planning my next visit....... -

Oh man where do I begin? I love sandwiches and have gone all over the place searching for greats. When it came to pastrami sandwiches, I had a place in my stomach for The Hat's. But that's in SoCal and the likelihood of them opening one up here in the future looks dim. I've been wanting to check this place out for so long but never really found myself in the vicinity. Until today....before picking up the gf from work, I decided to give a quick swingaroo by and boy was I not disappointed.
You're greeted by a friendly staff and they take your order with ease and consideration. You get in, and if there isn't a line, you put in your order and you're out the door with a sandwich or in my case 2 sandwiches in 5 minutes.
I ordered Tony's hot pastrami for myself on a 3 seed roll, and for her I ordered a Die's Decadence.
The pastrami is incredible. It's almost bacon-like as referred to in one of the pictures and there isn't any of the tough connective tissue or huge chunks of fat. It's super moist and flavorful and each bite just gets better and better. It's almost as if the law of diminishing returns was not applied in this sandwich. The bread is super crisp and airy and doesn't destroy the roof of your mouth like some other toasted sandwiches do. There was mayo and mustard but even those couldn't act as a barrier to the super moist and flavorful pastrami. The Hat, you have been knocked over. I wished I had ordered two...
The Die's Decadence was good too! In it's own way. I ordered it on a sweet roll which pales in comparison to the 3 seed roll, so maybe next time I'll get it on that. But the combination of turkey, avocado, sprouts, peppers was good, and to top it all off, a helping of mushrooms to give it that extra flavor boost. I'm telling you, the mushrooms really made the sandwich. Otherwise, it's basically a turkey avocado sandwich. She enjoyed it, which is what counts. But I still wish I ordered two pastrami sandwiches.... sigh.
Next time I go, I'll probably tell myself I want to try something off the menu, like....Marybeth's meatballs but I'm pretty sure I'm going to wind up with Tony's Hot Pastrami.....yum. -

With so many awesome sandwich places around these days, this place is ok. It's pretty bland and I have definitely had better (Think Ike's, Pal's Takeaway...)
I had the pastrami sandwich ( got charged 50 cents for Peperoncinis and they charge extra for cucumbers too???) and although it was nice that they delivered and delivered really fast, I just wasn't blown away and I don't really have any reason to ever order from there again... -

Gotta love this place. The people are friendly and thoughtful. ( They remembered my name...Like the show Cheers. ) http://www.youtube.com...
So far everything I have ordered has been outstanding.
Breakfast= Toasted garlic bagel with cream cheese and tomato (http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) . and a fresh squeezed Orange juice.
Lunch= Hot pastrami ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) , Dies Decadence, or the cheese burger. always a side of fries tons of pepper.
Service is fast and friendly which is always a plus. 4 thumbs up -

Introduced to me by my Hubby who works next door. Great little place. The food is good, but the service is better. Terry is the sweetest lady in any sandwich shop in town. It's worth going in just to see how adept she is at remembering names, faces and what people like. Expect a line for lunch starting at 11am.
Try it. You'll like!! -

Fan. Even their crunchy veggie sub is amazing and delicious. I got the Piro's (which has avocado, mushroom, sprouts, tomato, bell pepper, onion) (minus the tomato and bell pepper, plus cucumber and pepperoncini), which was totally amazing and droolworthy. $7.
Friendly, efficient staff; cool old timey photos of SF on the walls.
