I have to give it 3 stars for the Chicken Pita Sandwich and their fries which are seasoned.

It is most definitely true that this place is ghetto and shady as hell. It does smell funny. I wouldn't doubt that most places have the same health code violations that these guys have. I've been here multiple times throughout the years and haven't gotten sick (yet).

It is your typical Gyro's place. It's greasy but not more greasy than most greasy spoon/fast food places. Order your stuff to go and you will be okay.

Oh holy hell no. It's now been shut down by the health department, but just..... all kinds of no. Just go to Standee's. Or Dominick's. Or take the Red Line to Clarke's. Or Pick Me Up. Or Hollywood Grill. Or Golden Nugget. Or all the way to 35th and walk to Maxwell Street. Anywhere but this.

    Oh god.

Open 24 hrs, cheaper than cheap and riddled with health code violations*.

*I'm speculating on that last one

That said, aj's is still somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me. That greasy delicious burger smothered in mushrooms and peppers saved me from sheer starvation a couple of times. Plus, you're almost sure to see some sort of spectacle if you go in late at night, a shirtless man selling floor lamps for example.

I'd definitely give it a try if you're in the area. If nothing else, you can laugh at the interior and get yourself one meal closer to a heart attack.

This a greasy spoon type joint; it open to 4:30 AM so as for the people at the bars can get something to eat when they close the bar.
It is what it is, if you eat here on a daily basis, not sure you live for a month, but if you need something to soak a belly full of alcohol, this is for you.

I cannot believe I once suggested to some friends we eat there sober.

    I am so fucking sorry.

The guy taking the orders was stoned out of his gourd.
The booths are colored bright red and yellow which sort of give it a circus vibe.
There other location is mildly better in terms of ambiance and decor... just regular booths at least.

Dress is semi-upscale to casual, if you are wearing pants that will probably suffice.  No shirt and you can probably be served also.  I am not sure if they would serve you if you were completely naked except for one of those barrels that they wear in cartoons.

It is open 24 hours though.

Wow, I'm thoroughly puzzled as to why ANY Yelper would rate this higher than 2 stars. Have they lost their sense of taste and smell?

Last night I really wanted some hot dogs and fries but there really isn't much to choose from in my neighborhood. So I walked over to AJ's thinking, "how bad could it be?"

Oh lord, it was BAD! First, the restaurant is a complete mess, smells like stale cigarette smoke and mold, and was poorly lit. Now, that's usually not a problem (see my Hella's Gyros review) but it still wasn't a good impression. Service was horrible. Between the manager on the phone and the cook who spoke broken english, I was surprised my order came out correct. It was expensive and took FOREVER for them to make 3 orders of hot dogs & fries even though it was slow (I was 1 of only 2 customers there).

When I finally got home and sat down to eat (I only live half a block away), the hot dogs were ice cold. It was like they had been cooked in lukewarm water. The fries were also barely cooked, some were still frozen on the inside. It was so nasty and inedible that I barely finished half my dinner.

    AVOID!

This place is terrible in all aspects. Their food is greasy and gross. Their dinning area smells like mold. This is only compounded by their awful delivery service.
Last night I made an order around 6pm. After three calls to them at 7:00, 7:20, and 7:45, I finally got my food at 8pm. When I got it, it was cold, mushy, and they messed up my order. I called to complain; they took down my information, and said to call today during the day. I called today and the guy who picked up the phone spoke very broken English. I tried to explain what happened the other day, but he couldn't understand me. I will never give these hacks any more of my money.

Oh gosh if you're looking for a heart attack on a plate go here. If you're looking for a heart attack on a plate yet still wanting to eat something tasty go to Patio Beef. Italian sausage here is dry, dry, dry...I thought I had made a mistake and ordered their beef jerky sandwich...oh nope....they don't have that on their menu. Next.

You can eat your fill at AJ's for about four dollars and not get food poisoning but I can't guarantee you won't throw up at the end anyway.  Even if you're on a student budget, why risk it when there's a McDonald's up the street.

Looking for something quick to eat and it's late at night?  This is the place for you.  Greasy food, wouldn't recommend eating it often.  Staff and people in there are quite interesting.  I must admit chocolate milkshake really hit the spot, and it came with an enormous straw.  The menu is quite large and they even deliver.

This place is scary and the food is made of greese but that's why I love it. It's always entertaining and 24 hours. I can't but laugh at the pictures on the wall.

When I lived in Roger's Park I LOVED this place.  Yeah, it was dirty and the people who worked there were weird but they made a great cheeseburger.  I love the lame pictures on the wall that the photography "studio" took.  They deliver too which was always an adventure.  The food tastes even better after a long night od rinking.

great place for food when you are hungry and nothing else is open.  this place used to be 24 hours but i guess not anymore.  they have a 2 for 1 gyros deal.  The burgers used to be better back a couple of years ago, but they are still good.
