This place was awesome! We came here after my brother's graduation from CMA in Vallejo and had a blast. I HIGHLY recommend asking for Wayne as your server, he kept us laughing all night long. Their sushi is one of the best I've had- the salmon crunch is to die for!!!

Their beef wrapped asparagus is also delicious.

The restaurant itself is a bit small, but they have a large patio and we sat 10 people with plenty of other tables to spare for other parties. Also, the bathroom is around the back so :/ not the most ideal, but is definitely not an issue when considering how great the food and service is.

    A solid 3.5 stars.

    The good:
    - Great service, the husband and wife duo are super sweet and get everything right to you. It's kinda random and funny but they call all the ladies sister and all the guys brothers. Just a random note.
    - Portions are really big and its definitely a good value for your money
    - Food is fresh

    The cons:
    - While the portions are big, the qualityh is just okay (I'm referring specifically to the sahimi). The rolls look good thought, but I didn't try any of those.
    - The grill items like the corn on the cob, eggplant etc is really eh. It tasts like someting you made at home and its really not that special. I really don't think that it's restaurant quality.

So thet two things I ordered were just okay and I'm not sure if that's representaticve of the rest of the food. So this place is just okay, I would only come back again if I were in the area for business or something and had no other place to eat...

My mommy loves to eat here, but we always order the same thing! LOL. Probably because it tastes good!  We always get the lunch Black Cod bento box. It comes with a salad and miso soup. The grilled fish is soft, tender, and full of a subtle yet tasty flavor. It also comes with 3 pieces of california roll, rice, a slice of orange, and an item of your choice. I chose the crispy spicy tuna roll which had a creamy rich sauce that was delicious. I wanna come back and try the sushi rolls next time.

The service here was speedy enough. They waiter and waitress were very welcoming and friendly. The waiter seemed very happy and smiley, striking up small conversation us while we were waiting for our lunch. Our food came out fast enough and eating everything made me REALLY full, but I'm a small asian girl...so I'm not sure if the food would have the same effect on a bigger person. Haha. When I come here again, I'll be sure to write an updated review!

My husband and I still love coming here 3 years later (true story: he asked me if I would be his girlfriend at this very restaurant years ago). The waitress is always super sweet and I love that they offer us free ice cream. This is like a mom & pops sushi restaurant and we've been happy with everything we've ordered whether it's sashimi, nigiri roll, or bento boxes. A+ from me :)

Driven by this place many times and had never taken the chance to try it out.

Went there for my sister's birthday and was pleasantly surprised.  I use to eat a lot of Sushi but have not visited many of these type of restaurants the last few years.

I was the only one in our party that did not get the bento box.  I ordered some miso soup and two types of rolls.  Both rolls were very good and satisfied my cravings. It was enough for me.

The rest of the group really enjoyed what they had and we all agreed that we would come back again.

The food was good, price was great, and waitress was very friendly and responsive.

I look forward to coming back again and trying more Sushi rolls on the menu!

I love the mango chicken bento box with the crispy spicy tuna roll. I can't find the chicken or a roll like this anywhere! I have been craving it lately. We drove out there Sunday for a late lunch only to find they don't open until 5. bummer. We went to our normal sushi place Sozo Sushi which is open all day, evens Sundays.

From the outside the place looks like it may not even be in business, and inside interior is a little sad. Once you have the food it is easy to get passed the looks of the place.
I love that the bento box gives you a choice to get a roll as well as a main dish.
The price is right, especially at lunch time.

Service is friendly and food comes in good time.

I don't care much about how posh a place looks,
so I am rating this on the food and service alone.

    Delicious and highly underrated!
We normally go to Nama Sushi, which we love, but we've been here twice now and have decided Alisai is better.  The fish is tastier, rolls just as good and the portions are larger.  The service is spectacular.  Wayne (the owner?) bends over backwards to make you feel welcome.  They're not nearly as popular as Nama and the atmosphere is not quite as nice (e.g., if you're trying to impress a date), but they seem to really appreciate the business more, and it shows.  You're also unlikely to wait here.  We need to keep great sushi choices here...Check it out!

I live nearby so wanted to try this place. Got a dragon roll, teriyaki plate and udon. All of it tasted decent....nothing super tasty, but all of it was a bit overpriced. I guess because its in Walnut Creek. Can't really comment on service because I got my food to go, but I will say that when I went in to pick up my food that there wasn't a single customer inside....so that's a bad sign. I probably won't be going back here because I don't believe in overpaying for food.

We love their black cod and Wayne! He's so nice and always greets us by name.  The black cod is flaky on the corners and just literally melts in your mouth. I'm always sad after I finish it because I just want more. Lunches are very reasonably priced and I'm always looking forward to the next time we eat there.

I wish I could give this place 6 stars. Or vote Wayne for President.

The food here is amazing and the service here is quite simply the best I've ever encountered. My favorites here are the chirachi dinner, the black cod, and the oyster fry. The chirachi is delicious and beautifully arranged, the black cod has the most incredible buttery texture, and the oyster fry doesn't jump out at you on the menu, but when you try it, its like that time you first discovered Nutella.

For Your local hole in the wall Japanese restaurant this place is absolutely great. All the workers are so sweet and agreeable. For a vegetarian, they offer many items that are mouth watering or will create an existing dish veggie friendly. Jen always makes you feel at home. My bf, a huge sushi buff said they had some of the best blue fin tuna hes had in ages along with the other dishes. If you want a great meal and not spend a fortune come here!

I actually love this place, and if I didn't create this stupid formula for rating restaurants i would have given them 4 starts for the sushi alone.

    1. The fish here is fresh so if you like sushi and sashimi this is the place to go.
    2. Ambiance is a little too lonely and uncomfortable.
    3. Service is slow and it's too much of a pain to cal the waiter for your bill or a glass of water.
    4.Price is fair.
    5. The place looks like a dump from the outside and the inside is not an eye-candy.

Overall if you're looking for good sushi, this is the place to go but if you are looking for good sushi and great dining experience. There are better places. Still be coming back for the sushi though.

Nice place in an odd looking building. Wasn't very busy when we showed up but got busier as the night went on so come early if you want to avoid the dinner crowd.

Ordered some yakitori and some rolls. The yakitori was drowning in sauces, ok but was looking for something more bbq like. Also ordered 3 rolls, the golden lobster was delicious but the favorite was the baked scallop role. The last was some spicy fuji tuna role that was interesting but not worth repeating for me.

Overall a decent place and worth trying out. Service was fast and efficient and friendly.

    A complete dump.

I ate here a year ago and thought it was horrible. Came back based on 4 star yelp rating. Not sure who's giving this place 5 stars. Hopefully they are well paid.

Miso from a pouch to start. Salty and unappetizing. I watched the server reach into a Tupperware bin with bare hands after no washing to scoop out my salad.  Decided to take a pass on the salmonella special.

Ordered hamachi and tuna sashimi along with a dragon roll. I asked the server for some input on the roll and she immediately went to the highest priced item. The yellow tail and tuna had been over refrigerated and was a day or two beyond serving. It was cut with the care of  a drunken ape. A big block of inferior fish.

As I sit here there is an open container of roe and salad that have been subject to room temp for 45 minutes. It is amazing that they haven't sent someone to the ER. One of they guys noticed my unfinished sashimi and suggested it was OK to eat within 4 hours.  Seriously?

There are many great sushi options in the area. It is worth the ten bucks to take your business elsewhere. Hopefully the health department gets around to this place.  Luckily I didn't need to use the bathroom as well described in other reviews.

This place is great! I only come to the bay every so often, and I have tried many places around the area, to search for theeeee favorite spot for sushi. The staff here is incredible. The waitress is very friendly, and efficient. She even let us sit at 4:30 when they open at five for dinner. The chef is quite the talker too. Their sashimi is very fresh and their rolls are a decent size. They even offer you green tea ice cream at the end of your meal which is amazing! minus a star for having the bathroom outside the restaurant. can be quite scary if you eat at night. make sure to have a friend to go with you.

I really tried to like this place more because the staff were so friendly, but, sadly, it's merely average overall.

The sushi is mostly good and mostly fresh, but we've had some items that were obviously past the sell-by date. As some reviewers have experienced, we asked for recommendations of the freshest fish for the day, and were always pointed to the most expensive, regular menu item.

The chef has never really been able to "wow" us with any of their rolls, but our servers have always tried to be accomodating with special requests. The bento boxes for lunch are uninspired at best... Not much creativity going on, and the better sushi bentos here are expensive for lunch ($14.95).

Parking is limited, but at least it's not street parking like in downtown WC. The interior needs updating, and the bathroom out back is questionable.

Great chicken katsu, especially with the wasabi sauce. Great value on the dinner bento boxes. We've been very happy with the rolls and nigiri.  Wayne and the female server (I don't know her name) are very friendly, very accommodating and always make a point to say hi and welcome us back. It's not a swanky place but that's alright with me. The food and customer service make every visit a pleasure.

Ajisai is buried along North Main Street in Walnut Creek (across the street from Jack in the Box).  You have to look carefully for it or else you will miss it.  The nice thing about the place is they have their own parking lot and the staff is very friendly.  The not so nice thing is that their food is average at best.  They do run some specials for those who are budget-conscious.

Usually I would give a restaurant like Ajisai a three-star rating.  Unfortunately the competition is stiff in Walnut Creek when it comes to Japanese restaurants.  Unless they improve, I think a two-star rating is a fair assessment.

I love Japanese food--it's the only kind of food I could eat for three meals every day, without feeling sick. Ajisai fills a gap for me, and I like its location. after driving by the place a few hundred times, we decided to get Japanese take out.

While the food isn't authentic, it's tasty. The fish is fresh, the prices are fair, and the portions are generous. What really makes this place great is the staff. My girlfriend and I stopped by around 9:30pm after she got off of work one night. Wayne and his staff made us feel instantly welcome, as if we were friends and restaurant regulars. I appreciate his honesty about the menu; Wayne was upfront about what was fresh, what was frozen, and that they use masago instead of tobiko (; flying fish roe), though they have wasabi tobiko (green colored).

Stephanie and I placed a to-go order, and received free edamame while we waited. Ajisai is open every day until 11pm... fantastic news, especially for holidays! Wayne mentioned that he's usually at the restaurant until midnight.

We've been back three times this week. We're greeted by name, sit down, order, have some edamame and something to drink. I like the unagi don, crispy spicy tuna roll, and beef yaki udon.

The service is fantastic and the price is right, the location is convenient and the hours are superb. I think of the food as Japanese comfort food, or Japanese style. This isn't the place that I'd go to if I felt like being super picky about authentic Japanese food (the owner and staff aren't Japanese either), but Ajisai has a nice patio, lunch specials and is open late every day. Awesome.

    Bradtastic Approved.

Service was excellent but the food was disgusting. My gf and I came here for our 5 year anniversary dinner due to the ratings on yelp. I, who grew up in San Francisco and was raised eating fresh sashimi thought the sashimi was very fishy and not fresh. Although the slices of sashimi were huge, I didn't want to finish my meal. The food here is not authentic! We also ordered a spider and a dragon roll. It was very salty and smothered with a lot of unagi sauce which made both rolls taste the same. In addition, this place doesn't have much parking and the bathroom is filthy. Overall the servers were nice and attentive but the food was horrible.

    One star for the servers.

I'm on a quest to try every Japanese/sushi restaurant in the area while I'm home for the summer, so I stopped by Ajisai for lunch today.

    PROS
    - Lunch special runs until 3:30
    - Lunch specials are a huuuge value! Many, many choices for the bento box and I think the most expensive one will run you about $11. Bento lunch comes with choice of one main, one side, California roll, rice, miso soup, salad and an orange.
    - Got two GIANT pieces of salmon in my bento box
    - Crunchy spicy tuna roll was good, however was covered in so much sauce I couldn't really identify all of the components... but that's not necessarily a bad thing cause it still tasted delish!
    - Service was great! Both my server and the owner were super friendly and attentive
    - I asked for a side of Sriracha and he brought me out a giant Costco sized bottle to keep at the table alllll for my greedy little self ((: Loved it.

    CONS
    - My salmon, though huge, was really fatty and so drenched in teriyaki that I had the misfortune of taking one giant bite of FAT
    - The bathroom... ew. First of all, it's outside to the back of the restaurant, much like a gas station. The condition of the bathroom also resembled that of a gas station. No, thank you.
    - Parking is TIGHT. Good thing no cars were parked around the back because I'm sure I'd have hit every one on my way out :P

Overall, I had a really nice experience here and I'll probably check out some more of what this restaurant has to offer.

Came here at night and ate outside in their covered outdoor dining area.
Two of us ordered their Bento box dinners which were very good.
Had the Almond Chicken with Almond Prawns: Portion sizes were very large and the cost was VERY reasonable.

The service was excellent and fast, the location is a bit weird for the type of restaurant that it is, but that won't stop me from going back and ordering the same thing I ordered the first time.
Dont know if the sushi is good here
or not, yet.....A "different" experience here. Three stars so far, because of
what the rest of the surrounding area offers : a move to the right location might make all the difference in the world to them. Recommended.

The restaurant is located in a bit of an odd place, but give them a chance and you will become a fan.

We've eaten on the patio and gotten take out.  They are a bit slow in getting the food ready, but that's just because they make everything fresh.

I love the veggie yaki udon, and my husband loves everything.  We also like the little salad they give you with your meal.

The service is very friendly, and you can tell they get to know the regulars very quickly.

It's definitely a good value for your money, and it's the best Japanese in Walnut Creek.

The parking lot is small, but we've always found a space.

I walked in around 1:15 on a Friday afternoon for my lunch break with my boyfriend. He ordered the combo box with chicken teriyaki and I ordered udon.  The combo box was fine, but then again, how can you really mess up on a bento box?
Udon means thick buckwheat noodles, and I was given ramen noodles. Broth wasn't dense at all, and they gave me the white powder chili instead of the red one.  The waiter was friendly enough (maybe a little too friendly), so I kindly asked him if there was any other spice available. He said "spicy tree paste" so curiously, I asked him to bring it out... It was just a bottle of sriracha.  I do love sriracha on a lot of food, but my udon soup? bleh.  Total came out so be about $20, which isn't bad but still not worth going again.

Being Japanese and having been raised on home cooked Japanese food, I tend to be a little picky about Japanese restaurants. Ajisai not only has an authentic feel to it but the service is on point and their food is delicious!
I'm not much of a sushi fan but I have this theory that you can always tell how good a place is by their katsudon. I tried it at Ajisai and was very pleasantly surprised. if you've never had katsudon, try it here so you can see what it's supposed to taste like.

Almost seven months ago, Wayne stayed open late for my girlfriend and me (see original review). Almost every week since, we've stopped by for the best sushi on the east side of the tunnel. The owner, Wayne, and I are now old-school buddies. I'm pretty sure we're going to go out pub crawling one of these nights, ending up sitting side by side at some dive slapping each other on the back and saying how awesome the other person is.

Tip of the year: Ask Wayne how to get "the lobster for free."

    I love this place!!!

Good food, great servers, very reasonable prices.

It's hard to find good sushi in Walnut Creek which isn't ridiculously expensive.  Ajisai is an all-around good sushi joint for eat-in or takeout.  The people who run this place are very, very nice, funny, and accommodating.  Every time I eat in here, I get free soup, salad, ice cream, and a fresh-cut wasabi tasting.  These people take pride in their work, and have fun with it, make a really good product, and I really hope them all the best.

I like this place because it is good, healthy, tasty food, and cost-effective.  I like the bento box with mackerel; the mackerel is a cheaper fish but still very tasty.  When I want to splurge I get the black cod which is absolutely AMAZING.  I've tried probably 12 different rolls, and they've all been good.  I really like how simply tasty the California rolls are here.  I normally never order California rolls, but the ones here are so fresh and simple and delicious I like to get them along with some rock n roll and maybe a fancy roll like Lion King, Spider, or Fuji Mountain.  Very good tempura, too.  Good miso and salad, as well.  They have a big menu, so non-sushi eaters will still enjoy their almond chicken and katsu dishes.  They really give you a ton of chicken if you order a bento box.

Great place!!!  If you want bento boxes and rolls, this place is fantastic, and won't hurt your wallet like most sushi places.  If I can suggest anything at all, try the black cod.  Use the lemon.  Oh my god....SOOO good.  I will miss this place now that I live in SF, and while there are many, many good sushi places here in the city, I hope I will find one that is such a great balance between delicious and inexpensive like Ajisai, thought I really doubt it.  If you live close to this place, definitely add it to your to-go list of options for those nights you don't feel like cooking or you feel like something special and healthy and not-to-expensive.

I totally enjoyed the walks down the street from my work to Ajisai for lunch. I must admit, the appearance of the building doesn't look quite inviting but don't let that fool you.

I'd either order a bento box (which is really a bang for your buck) or some sushi rolls. The service there was absolutely amazing. Everyone there is quite friendly. All the times i've been here, their food has never been a disappointment. It also helped it was just down the street from my office!

I'd recommend this place if you want something quick but fulfilling for lunch.

We went here because of the173 four star reviews that yelpers gave this restaurant. I've had way better bento box & sushi. I went to this other sushi restaurant 3 days after because I didn't get my sushi fix with Ajisai. That "other" restaurant only received 3 stars and is way, way better than this place. I guess yelp reviews are really biased. Wish people would just based stars on how the food really taste instead of reviewing its surrounding area. I mean, I understand restaurant ambiance and customer service but reviewing outside the restaurant, WTH people!!!

Anyway, so in reviewing overall restaurant the parking lot sucks & floor was sticky in the main entrance way. However, there was this really nice waiter I guess thats why I gave it 2 stars.

I would really give this 3.5 stars but since Yelp does not oblige ;( they get the benefit of the doubt on this.

    The Good...
We had a great sushi lunch here. The fish was fresh, portions were good for the price, and the owner was very entertaining and attentive.

Black Cod was good. Simple preparation, nothing fancy. I've had much better but this was nice.

Seaweed salad was perfectly done... not too sweet, not too acidic.

Hamachi Nigiri was awesome. The owner said he gave use the best looking part and I believe him. It was perfect.

    The Bad...
Wish the place had air conditioning... it was small, bad air flow, the front door was open, and it was 90F inside... not kidding. That took a start off right there.

Parking is also very tight, very few spaces.

The Ahi Toro was not good. It was not buttery smooth like it should be, it was stringy and tough.

Huge portions. I recommend the bentos. You get quite a deal, lunch or dinner. The guy and his wife (?) are extremely friendly and they remember repeat customers like myself and my friends. My friend really likes their yaki-udon, and I've had a decent unagi-don. My other friend said their oyako-don was disappointing, though.

Always a treat! I really think everyone should give this place a try.

    Interesting parking space.

This place was excellent! The service was amazing, the food tasted great, and the price was right.

I would skip the jumbo shrimp and instead have an extra piece of cod. Not to say the shrimp wasn't great but the cod was way better.

The pot stickers were amazing and the beef asparagus to die for.

We also had the crispy Philadelphia roll which was also amazing. I would recommend a seat outside rather than inside.

Great food! Great prices! Great staff! Friendly environment. We've been looking for a sushi restaurant in Walnut Creek to call "our place," and I believe we've finally found it. Oh, and Wayne is awesome!

Yo sushi heads this place will stay on your brain hardcore after devouring the damn good bites they offer.  No joke Ajisai is the best thing to grace my lips in Walnut Creek.  Who would have know that just 7 minutes from the hustle and bustle of all the fluff downtown there would be some gangster sushi killing the competition on the low.

My lunch partner Chelsy C. opted that we go grab some fresh air and sushi.  We both scrolled through Yelp and she let me know she was feeling Ajisai's vibe.  It's a cool spot nothing fancy and versace'd, but it has an outdoor patio and a very welcoming atmosphere.  The service is not the fastest but at least they are friendly and sweet right?

We ordered the Tuna Poke salad, spicy crunchy tuna roll, rainbow roll, dragon lady roll, 5 pieces of Unagi and the Rock N Roll.  So about 10 minutes after we ordered they brought us complimentary Miso Soup and then about 20 minutes later our deliciousness was right there fresh as could be, crispy as could be, and spicy as heaven should be.  The Poke salad was bomb boo, like hella bomb.  I am talking fresh slivers and chunks of Ahi Tuna, plenty of fresh tomato, avocado, and spicy dressing all over with a few sprinkled walnuts.   Perfect texture and perfect flavor.  The Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll was the best spicy crunchy anything I've ever tasted and devoured.  If your a spicy tuna lover I must say go for it, especially if you into the whole roll being dressed up in crunch.  Chelsy was very in love with her rolls and swallowed the Unagi quick as could be.

We both have been talking about lunch here since then nonstop.  The prices are ridiculous cheap and the portions are biggie style.  Leave the lounges and fancy smancies for a bit and stroll over to Ajisai.  I bet you'll love it.
