Review from becca g.
Chestnut Hill, MA
Ajami just opened where Lily's boutique used to be -- 7th ave. at 15th St. -- and I wouldn't have known about it unless my boyfriend (of infinitely greater eyesight than myself) managed to spot the hookah-lined shelves behind poorly-scrawled, hand-painted signage on the storefront.
Inside, sparse, Ikea-style tables and chairs occupy the left side of the shop, a retail section takes up the rear left corner of the store, and a makeshift cafe is set up behind the cash register. There's a bit of seating right in front of the door, but two futons and saggy pillows does not a lounge area make.
So what's good about Ajami? Well, it's a hookah lounge, which is nice. The staff were super friendly and were clearly prepared to stay open later than posted hours for the sake of new customers. The hookah itself (coconut) was good. Hookah-like. Clean.
Cons: we ordered coffee after noticing another table with a beautiful service of what must have been TURKISH coffee, since our plain american coffee came in paper cups. milk (and not enough of it) had already been added for us. very deli-chic, which is to say, not chic at all. the decor is very cafe-like, which is fine, but the overhead lighting is WAY harsh. coffee & its service were mediocre, but not terrible (tea is likely a better bet).
What clientele will this new head shop attract? Well, that depends. If management spruces up the decor, classes-up the signage, takes a more subtle route with the retail portion of the store and expands the cafe, they could have a real 'slope gem on their hands. If things stay as they are? I'm not so sure Ajami can last.
Good luck, Ajami. I want to love you, but for now, I'm just in like.
