Wow this place is rad - even radder still given the fact that it's a discount service provided by the SF Dept of Public Health. It's not only cheaper, but cooler and better than anything provided by a "private" clinic.

I called and they didn't have an appointment for a week. I told them I'd be in Bali by then and they got me an appointment the day before I depart. They then called back and asked if I'd like to come in today, which I did.

I get to the office and they're super friendly, welcoming, have cool international music playing and have every Lonely Planet travel guide under the sun that I didn't get to read because I didn't have to wait.

Pamela spent time going over my immunization records, explained what I needed to do and walked me through in depth how to be safe and protect myself from nasty mosquitoes. She was super thorough and I never felt hurried or rushed in the way I always feel when dealing with private and for-profit clinics.

This is not only an amazing, highly effective service but also an example for any haters of public health that something can be run better, cheaper, more efficiently and more friendly than a private practice.

I strongly recommend you go here if you're planning on traveling abroad or need vaccinations of any kind.

This place is WONDERFUL! So efficient, so knowledgeable, so friendly. We had Robbie, the seasoned travel veteran, walk us through all of the immunization we would need for an upcoming African adventure. She was AWESOME. Not only could we barely feel the shots even happen, but she talked us through everything, gave us travel advice, and even offered us her first new born. Okay... well at least she was amazing.

OH - and the best part, it's REALLY CHEAP! We were blown away by the prices, in addition to the service. Check it out pronto, Tonto.

What? What? This is part of a government health dept!  Holy $%^#! They're friendly and more efficient than my doctor's office.

They answered the phone immediately and never put me on hold even when I was going back and forth on available appointment times.  The woman was super friendly and made a point of explaining their process and asking me to arrive 20 minutes early for my visit.

When I arrived, the receptionists were both super friendly and welcoming (health dept - come again?) As soon as you check in, you're given an awesome summary of what's needed for the countries your're visiting. This is more useful than anything I found online or on the CDC Web site.

I downloaded all the paperwork from the AITC Web site and filled them out in advance so I just had to hand the papers to the receptionist when I arrived.  The questions are really detailed and I couldn't imagine trying to sit in an uncomfortable waiting chair while trying to figure out how many days in each city on my month long trip.

Thanks to my lucky stars, I got Bobbi as my nurse and she was awesome. She called me back 10 minutes earlier than my appointment time.  I loved that she was up to date on health issues going on around the world. She was also in the Peace Corps and has a good understanding of 3rd world travel. We agreed that I needed a yellow fever and typhoid update and she rocked at giving shots. Ask her about the "pinch and jiggle" method so you don't feel a thing. I think she had both shots done in 20 seconds - no lie.

Toss in some Permethrin Insecticide for Fabrics and 3M Ultrathon and I was out the door at around $250. It wasn't cheap but the service and knowledge was worth it.

First rate in every regard.  I was very skeptical about the quality because I perceived this to be a government-run clinic...I could not have been more wrong.

Quality:  The nurse who administered my vaccinations was far more knowledgeable and well travelled than any doctor I had been to.  She was patient, kind and capable.  The clinic also give out brochures about the diseases and vaccinations (for free) and detailed maps with overlays of malaria.  I found their country reports (free) more useful than browsing the dept of state website.

Timeliness:  my appointment started on time and I was not rushed.

Price: this was not important to me.  The shots aren't cheap so if you are worried about saving money, you might want to look around.  I think I paid $300 for the appointment, hep a, typhoid, flu, tetnus.

    You can't go wrong here.

I called this place up one afternoon and they asked me, "what time are you free in the next two days?"  Unfortunately I had to cancel and tried to reschedule.  "Sorry, we don't schedule into next month."  Could be annoying, if they didn't ALWAYS have appointments open at the EXACT time you want (within their somewhat narrow business hours, but you can't have everything).

I'm a risk-seeking traveler with a tiny paycheck, so I'm looking for the bare minimum in traveler's shots.  The lady who helped me, a portly blonde lady wearing kente cloth kulats, was knowledgeable about requirements, patient when explaining the procedure, and good at distracting me from the piece of metal sliding into my arm.  She even listened to my inane stories about other shots I've gotten, because she clearly cares deeply about my immunization history.

The travel clinic made me feel confident that I was protected from funky jungle diseases and even recommended NOT getting some shots that weren't TOTALLY necessary.  Fuck yeah!

This review is for the travel clinic.  I came here in May 2011 for a trip in June and was able to get an appointment on very short notice.  Molly Hogan, one of the RNs at the travel clinic, was extremely thorough and professional.  They give you lots of information to take home, and fax in your prescriptions right away.  They also have a ton of travel books in the waiting area to browse while you wait.

The travel clinic is a bit on the expensive side, but worth it for the convenience and not having to go through the hassle of an actual doctor's appointment.  During my visit I received a typhod vaccine, meningitis vaccine, polio booster vaccine, prescriptions for ciproflaxin and malarone, and clothing mosquito repellant treatment spray, all for about $240.

We've been there twice: first time when we had $$ to travel and needed immunizations. As almost no health insurance covers routine adult vaccinations anymore we also were not up to date on some basic ones.

The nurse had also studied about where we were going and gave us the inoculations we needed and not a bunch of extras. I don't know what other Yelpers are complaining about - we asked questions and no one pushed "extra" shots on us. The nurse practitioner advised us which ones were most crucial (Tdap and Hep B) and referred us to a Hep B clinic whee we could get the Hep B for free!

The second time we went just the other day was for the Shingles vaccine - we don't have insurance anymore and could not afford the shot although we rare both in the age category that needs it. The  nurse was able to fax out info to the manufacturer Merck and get us the vaccination For $35 each which is a great help.

They do get busy and don't take appointments except for travel vaccinations but they are always pleasant; will tell you how long the wait will be and really know their stuff. I wish all doctors and nurses were as knowledgeable and friendly as the staff here!

I've been here once before, and that experience was fine. I mean, it was as good as getting poked with 5 needles and not being able to move my left arm for a day could possibly be.

This review is for my phone interaction with them today.

Let me start off by saying the young lady who answered the phone was extremely helpful and polite. I would give her 5 stars and a half, so this is not directed to her at all.

I travel internationally quite often. I'm also a RN, so I have a pretty decent grasp on what I need when I travel and my immunization status. I am up to date with all of my immunizations, but I needed malaria prophylaxis. I was traveling on the East Coast and had made an appointment over there, which fell through, so I figured I could make an appointment when I returned to SF.

So I called this morning, Thursday, to see if I could be squeezed in that day or Friday, as I was leaving Sunday night. The receptionist tried to find an open spot, but couldn't fit me in. I explained to her my situation (I didn't need any shots, just  Malarone). She said put me on hold to speak to the nurse, she comes back on and tells me the nurse will talk to me. Yay!!!!

    Or not.

Me: "Hi My name is Nicole and _________fill in long story about how I don't need shots and just malaria pills here_____"
Nurse Lisa: "Yeah you have to make an appointment" ::sounding disinterested::
Me: (slightly confused) "Oh, okay, I just thought maybe I could come in and...."
Nurse Lisa: (cutting me off, sounding even more disinterested in any sound I am making) "So, yeah, you call and make an appointment and then come in and we go over all that stuff with you. So you have to make an appointment"
    Me: "Uhhhhhh, Ok?"

    ::end phone call::

I'm just trying to figure out why the nurse agreed to talk to me if she was just going to reiterate the fact I need an appointment. At least the receptionist pretended to care and wanted to help me out.

Long story short - I get it's my fault that I tried to make an appointment last minute, but I would have accepted it with a smile if this nurse didn't get on the phone and treated me like a five year old.

From one nurse to another - Thanks for the professional courtesy, Ratched.

    10/4/2010 4 Check-ins Here

One day I was sick and stayed home from work, but I left the apartment for about half an hour to go get some soup and tea in the neighborhood.  When I came back, I checked my mail and there were three, unused Trojan condoms in my mailbox!

Not feeling particularly flattered by that overture, I went into a tizzy to find the person responsible. Well, I never found out if the mail carrier had the hots for me, if a crazy ex was getting back at me, or if it was a case of mistaken identity.

Well, I do appreciate a good public health campaign, and though this approach is extreme, if I hadn't already been a fan of protection, I was then.  I think that there are some more orthodox ways of spreading the gospel of preventative medicine, without committing a felony and tampering with mailboxes.

The AITC can help you to become HBV, HPV, TB, pertussis, and a slew of tropical diseases free. All of the nurses are sweet and interested in your work/travels/love life.  Everyone should do their part (in a non-stalkerish/creepy way) to contribute to our collective wellbeing. Some may say that the postman always rings twice, but in the case of infectious diseases, one knock is all you get.

I got an appointment here on short notice for my trip to South America.  Was really impressed.  The clinic is well organized around getting people prepared for international trips.  They give out the "AITC HANDBOOK" which has all their tips and advice for avoiding mosquito bites, dealing with diarrhea, etc (complimentary with visit).  The nurse whipped out special maps and then basically interrogated me about my trip plan, pointing out where I would have risk for malaria or yellow fever, and where I would not.  Then we had a helpful discussion about whether I needed rabies shots or not.   Never got ANY OF THAT from my doctor!   The shots were essentially painless, prices were reasonable, I was in and out of there in under an hour.    Would definitely recommend.

I'm traveling next month and needed to get some vaccinations right away.

I recently changed medical coverage from Kaiser to Blue Shield and to my consternation was referred to AITC by my doctor at UCSF because UCSF does not have a travel clinic where you can get shots, which I thought was f*cked-up, because I use to be w/Kaiser where you can get all the shots you need FREE.

AITC does not accept  any medical insurance and I had to PAY $356 for a consultation and 5 shots that I needed.  So, don't let anybody tell you that the shots at AITC are cheap.  They're not!

    Here's what my visit cost:

    Flu $25
    Polio $59
    Hep A/B $105
    Typhoid $83
TDAP $70 (Special  TDAP promotion $70 credit) - So this was free!
    Health Visit Fee $49
    Admin Fee $17
    Assessment Fee 18
    Total: $356

The $70 TDAP credit was a pleasant surprise, but without that credit the total would have been $426!  They don't take cash after 330 when they begin to close up, so make sure to have a credit card if you go there late.  BTW, I overheard the clerk telling a couple their bill was $804!!!!!

You have to make an appointment to be seen at AITC; no drop ins.
I got to AITC about 30 mins early; they ask you to be at least 15 mins early to fill out consent forms and a medical history.  Even so, I had to wait about 20 mins extra past my appointment to finally see a nurse.  The nurse who treated me was nice enough and gave me the shots w/o any difficulty.

I rated AITC "ok" because it provides a very useful service for those of you us whose medical provider does not give travel vaccinations or those of you who don't have any medical coverage to begin with.  The service was fine and I was just miffed that I had to pay so much for the visit and shots, which really isn't their "fault" but the cost is reason enough for not being a "fan."

I didn't check in advance to see if Blue Shield would cover the vaccinations at another clinic BUT I am going to see if they'll reimbursement me for the shots since my provider doesn't offer them.  Learn from my example.

If you have insurance, you should FIRST check w/your carrier to see if travel vaccinations are covered and find another clinic (like California Pacific Medical Center) that will accept your coverage for payment.  Otherwise, be prepared for a stiff bill after your visit at AITC.

Update:  Got an MMR shot the following week for $83.  So, total cost for all shots and other fees was $439!

My co-worker , a visiting scientist just arrived from China, was trying to get her young daughter's immunization record up-to-date before the school year starts (one week!).  Since neither mother nor daughter are fully proficient in English I was asked to help facilitate the doctor's appointment, and I was shocked to find that most doctor's covered by their HealthNet HMO didn't have appointments available for 2 months!

I was referred to the SF Department of Public Health and this clinic, and after explaining the situation to a kind woman on the phone was told to expect a call back.  San Francisco bureaucracy + a complicated situation not usually under the purview of the DPH made me assume I'd never hear back.  Lo and behold, just hours later, I got a call back from a helpful woman who explained that while they didn't typically vaccinate children (unrelated to travel), they could make an exception, etc, etc.  It turns out that during the few hours before the call-back I was able to make an appointment with an insurance-covered pediatrician, but I am VERY impressed with the Immunization Clinic's efficiency, willingness to consider a situation outside the norm, and professionalism.

If I ever do require vaccinations for travel, I know where I'll be going.

If you have to get poked with needles or shot up with Tuberculin for a skin test, this is the place to go! These are the happiest bunch of syringe-weilding medical workers I've ever had the good fortune of paying a visit to. And the administrative staff? So darn nice and welcoming, I wanted to buy even one of EACH of the immunizations and vaccinations these ladies are peddling.

Thorough, gentle, professional, and kind, this is one hell of a place to get poked! And cheap, too! Poke me already! Just poke me!

I got the perfect TB shot here.  Many a-times, I went to the health department in Manchester to do this process for school and junk, and I left with sub-par imperfect injections.  Here?  Perfection.  Textbook perfection.  Seriously.  To the point where I almost wanted to take a picture of it to document it forever.  Actually, I think I did.  Anyway, digressed.  If it weren't for the long wait sometimes, they'd get a perfect 5 stars.  Because it gets really busy sometimes?  Solid 4.5.  Solid.

Oh, and it is affordable.  The prices are listed on their website.  Word.

I stopped by here today for a bunch of shots in preparation for a trip to Indonesia.

The RN I saw was terrific: warm, patient, knowledgeable about the region, and full of helpful tips for avoiding the various nasty bugs like Japanese encephalitis. She gave me half a dozen shots, but she was so nice that I barely noticed all the needles. The two ladies at the front desk were also really nice.

In short, I couldn't be happier with this clinic. San Francisco is lucky to have it.

There are two things that turn me off about international travel: long haul flights and inoculations. Sadly neither can really be avoided. And aside from maybe losing weight in an effort to create more room for myself in coach, I don't see the long haul flights getting better any time soon.

Fortunately though, I've found my new favorite place to get shots. It's everything you want a travel clinic to be. Clean. Informative. Thorough. And speedy. And in addition to super friendly staff and having a large stock of Lonely Planet guidebooks to peruse while you're there, the best part is that it is housed in a government building near Civic Center. This gives you convenient downtown access as well as the feeling you're doing something grand and official.

Everything about this place was professtional. The nurse called for me right at the appointed time. She explained all of the biological enemies I might encounter in Egypt: Typhoid, Hep A, Polio (no Malaria, thank god). She then offered to let me lie down instead of sit and proceeded to inject me with the most delicate of needles. It must have been a hair's breath thick and it was over so quickly I didn't even have time to wince. I'm not lying when I say I didn't even feel it and trust me, I always feel it.

Thanks to this Angel of Inoculation, I may now lap up steaming bowls of Polio Soup without fear. And you can be sure, should I need a hit of Yellow Fever cultures anytime soon, I will definitely return. Maybe not with overly giddy excitement, but also not with the gripping fear or the kicking, biting, begging and screaming that usually accompanies such tasks.

I'm traveling to Mexico in January and wanted to get some vaccinations.

I called the clinic schedule a consultation/shots and was able to get in less than a week after. The nurse I met with was named Pamela; she was helpful in explaining the specific health risks of the area I am traveling to, and recommended the appropriate vaccinations.

The ambiance of the clinic isn't particularly something to write home about, but the staff does a good job getting you in and out quickly.

If you are driving over, make SURE to bring tons of quarters for the meters: one quarter only gets you 6 minutes!!!!

Typhoid pills are sexy - a lot sexier than getting Typhoid.

I am paranoid about things like Japanese encephalitis, rabies (did you know that you can get rabies JUST from saliva getting into an open cut - you don't have to be bitten? See, the knowledge I pick up at the clinic), yellow fever, etc. Therefore I am quite diligent about getting my immunizations before I travel.

They also do Hep A and B which everyone should get (at least B people, come on).

They give you a ton of info about the country you are going to and are very conscious about only recommending Malaria medication that does not upset the local immunity.

I think this place is a gem and we are SO lucky to have it in SF.

My yellow card is almost as full as my passport. And yes, I am TB negative.

It just makes me so happy that this place exists, and there are nurses whose main job is to sit down with travelers and figure out what vaccines they need to stay healthy while globetrotting. I walked out of here thinking there was hope for world peace. Of course, that might have been the endorphin rush from all those shots.

It's true that this place doesn't take insurance, but their prices are affordable, not to mention way cheaper than getting typhoid or malaria. It's a cute office, too - maps and tapestries all over the place.

The best part is that they take drop-ins, which of course means that you might be waiting for a while.  I got all my vacc's for my upcoming trip to Asia here, and it was pretty convenient.  They also offer a free consultation (free if you end up buying vaccines) the first time you go in.

The nurse who consulted me kind of scared the shit out of me.  She started by asking me if I'd had a disease in a foreign country, and when I told her I'd had malaria in Africa, she went into some details about cerebral malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa that I'm glad I did not know about when I was sick.  Her power as medical authority established, she almost convinced me to get vaccinated against rabies, but at $180 a pop (for a series of three) I told her I'd rather take my chances with the wild dogs of Mongolia (or Mongrelia, as my dog likes to say).

Overall, a pretty good value.  Most single shots cost $50-$60, and if you forget to refrigerate your typhoid tablets, they will give you a replacement for $20.

Once again this clinic saves the day!

I had my second visit with them yesterday and my nurse Pamela was very kind, patient and helpful.  The nurse ((Rhonda)) I had seen last time last time even remembered me, addressed my by my full name and said hi... I don't think you'd ever find a nurse or a doctor that would remember you at Kaiser.

This clinic is one of a kind, they care about each person that steps into that office, all the while taking their time to help you feel comfortable with the medications they are giving you.

Even though it gets pricey, I am excited about my next visit!

Came here today for my immunization shots : twinrix, typhoid and tetanus.

My appointment was at 11:20am and I got there at 11:25... it's okay... I printed all the paper work I needed to fill out in advance and completed them ahead so I am actually early, by 15 mins.

I was seen by Molly and she's really nice. Was thorough about what shots I will need and which ones are recommended. Also gave me prescription for malaria.

I was here 8 years ago for my twinrix and typhoid and man these things got expensive. I remember paying for mine and my brother's which were all together less than $100. Today I paid close to $300 for all: $39 for consultation, $99 for twinrix, $79 for typhoid and $39 for tetanus.  Come on Universal Insurance, kick in already!!!

But considering my sister almost died of food poisoning the last time we were in Asia, its totally worth it to avoid that scenario.

Location is not great but if you schedule early you can find street parking.

I'm happy with their work. Will need a follow up to finish my Hep b series.

This was a really wonderful experience. Expectations were low given it's a non-profit in the Department of Health building. But, I went there 10 days before a trip to India to receive vaccinations and was pleasantly surprised!

    Major kudos:
    - Quick -- You can get in quickly (I made my appointment within 3 days of seeing someone) and get out quickly (appt lasted about 45 minutes)
    - Low cost -- it's cheap and most insurance companies won't pay for vaccinations anyways so there is little benefit in seeing your PCP.
    - Thorough -- reviewed your medical and vaccination history with you; reviewed absolutely everything anyone might need to know about precautions to take, etc. (I left with about 15 pages of material to read, too)
    - Cautious -- better to be vaccinated if you're headed into the deep wilderness in some third world country, than not (I actually couldn't remember being vaccinated for anything, ever)
    - Clean -- the place was incredibly clean...marble floors, etc... what you would expect from a civic center location. Impressive!

    Negatives:
    - Don't have any!

For travel immunizations, they suggested making an appointment.  Being a City Clinic - I was a little weary the first time I went there, but it's really not that bad at all.

As for parking, unless you know you're just dropping by for a quickie (in which case the meters are fine), I'd suggest parking in the underground parking lot - $2.50/hr, entrance on McAllister.

I just got back from here, and I literally had the most pleasant doctor's visit of my life, and I knew I had to get a bunch of shots too... Anyway, the people at the front desk were friendly and helpful, but Robbie (Robin) stole the show. She was so knowledgeable and so friendly I didn't want to leave. She gave me all the information I needed for my trip and even some unrelated info. She gives it to you straight, tells you what you really need, the best way to get it, and really weighs the options for you so you can get out of there without breaking the bank.

    Thanks.

Great first visit, but I'm not sure I'd go back a second time. First I'll tell why, then I'll tell what I did for my 2nd round of shots (for those of you seeking alternates).

I went to this clinic in 2006 for a travel consult and had a really good experience, even if it was expensive. I left feeling confident that I was given expert health info. Now in 2009 I needed to find out what repeat shots I still needed for travel to the same region, and was told I had to get *yet another* travel consult for around $35. That lost them a star. I mean if I know what shots I need, why should I pay them to tell me? On the bright side, at least I was able to piece together what shots I already got so I could get the rest elsewhere.

So for people seeking travel shots on a budget (shots for going to Southeast Asia are hundreds of dollars), here's some advice. Especially if you already know what you need. Sorry if this review is misplaced as I didn't know where else to put it. If anyone tells me where to move this too, I'd be happy to do so.

Berkeley Free Clinic/Immunization Clinic at 830 University - if you are poor enough you can get extremely discounted shots, some even free for Hep A, Hep B, MMR, and Tetanus. You can do this via drop in during certain hours, just call to find out when and ask what you'll pay.

Avenue Family Practice in Oakland CA has a travel clinic too. I got everything else done there with Dr. Berzansky, who I am now making my primary care physician. If you have insurance, Avenue will kindly submit your bill to your insurance company. Most travel clinics will not deal with insurance. But they nevertheless ask that you pay up front just to be safe because unfortunately, many insurance companies will deny claims if shots are travel related. If you're a previous patient, they seem pretty flexible about this.

One other tip: If you do go to Avenue Family Practice, try to see which immunizations you can take by pill instead of shot. You are more likely to get insurance coverage on these, and if I remember right, even without insurance its cheaper this way.

Finally, this is a 2nd draft because my review received a comment from the Adult Immunization and Travel Clinic, and I think a valid point was made that it is important to get advice from doctors who know what travel shots you need.  I did actually double check with the doctor at Avenue Family Practice in Oakland to make sure I was not missing anything big, but since it was not a "travel consult" I may have taken a risk. Still, please read their comment and make wise decisions.

I'm leaving for a 10-day trip to Vietnam in a few weeks so made an appointment to get the relevant vaccines for 11:45am.

I showed up at 11:15am (half an hour early) and dutifully checked in. And waited. And waited. And waited. People who had come in after me had already been seen, paid, and left. People who had come in after _them_ were now being seen.

I finally was seen by a nurse at 1pm, an hour and 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment and an hour and 45 minutes after I arrived (admittedly early).

My nurse was polite, well-informed, friendly, and did an excellent job of administering the shots. I'd give the clinic a 4 or (probably) 5 star rating if I were rating it solely on her abilities and skills.

But timeliness is important too, so the clinic gets only 1 star. The bizarre scheduling system is inexplicable, and annoying. If you're a student or unemployed and can afford to spend up to two or three hours waiting around for what should be a quick and easy 15-minute appointment, this clinic is for you. But for the rest of us it seems about as efficient as the DMV: do yourself a favor and go to a private clinic that actually has an incentive to provide adequate customer service.

Thought the staff did a great job, super courteous, knowledgeable nurses, painless shots, and when my appointment ended up starting 30 minutes late they deducted $20 from the $39 fee.  Cool.

Just FYI - The mosquito repellent they sell is the same price as at REI. I still bought some.

If you can take the underground, I'd recommend it.  The office is only 2 blocks from the Civic Center stop.

My husband and I, are traveling overseas in a few weeks and made an appointment with the Dept. of Public Health to obtain inoculations.  The office personnel, from the person making the appointment, to the wonderful nurse who advised us on the necessary vaccinations and administered them, displayed the utmost in professionalism, customer service, and kindness.  We are not residents of the City, however, this service is available to anyone and is fairly priced.  I highly recommend this office.  There was no waiting, we were taken at the time of our appointment, and given excellent care and consideration.

Great place, great prices, great availability.

My insurance didn't cover the immunizations I needed, so it's worthwhile to shop around.  I saved nearly $200 on the Yellow Fever vaccination alone by coming here instead of going to my regular hospital.  And it's so easy to get an appointment.

    Two issues with the place:
    1.  Not much privacy.  The areas where you discuss your needs with the nurse is not enclosed, and is just on the other side of the cubicle wall from the waiting area, so people waiting can hear everything.  Given that some of the questions she asks could be very private ones, depending on the immunizations you need, this could be a problem for some people.

    2. The nurse, I thought, could have been somewhat more well-informed about the area I was going to (west africa).  She was good, but given that this is a specialty clinic, i was surprised to hear her reading from the computer printout about what to prescribe ("looks like they want you to get meningococcal meningitis vaccine" -- "they" being the computer program into which the receptionist inputs your destination).

Don't get me wrong -- i was very happy with the service, it's just that considering how easy it is to make an appointment, it might be worth asking if the nurses have any specialty in the area you'll be traveling to, and choose your nurse based on that, if possible.  Overall, it was a great experience.

Finally (and this is no fault of the clinic, but just how Yelp works), these reviews don't show up on Yelp when you search for "travel medicine" (but the "public health department", of which this clinic is a part of, does), so let me help the search results: travel medicine, travel medicine, travel medicine, travel medicine, travel medicine

I arrived here at 8:53AM and there were about 10 people there waiting to be seen. They opened their doors promptly at 9:00AM and the check in process was fast. Paperwork was a few pages long depending on what you needed to be done. (Their application form is also available online but I figured I would be waiting anyways.)

I was there for an hour until I was seen. The nurse tells me to go grab something to eat. So I head to the 4th floor and find this weird cafe that hardly have anything in there  to sell and purchased something to eat. I was so glad everything was cheap and I didn't break the bank. $1.50 for a sausage biscuit which you microwave yourself and a drink from the vending machine. I scarfed down my breakfast and returned to the room.

The Nurse named Lisa was so nice!! I told her I was a fainter and she got me a place to lie down. She had me elevate my feet and all 3 shots were pretty painless! I was a happy camper!! She gave me a cool compress all over my face and hands and helped me sit up. All this took like 7 min and she said that she was in no rush and to take my time. I would have but my meter was running out!

I had the flu shot, TDAPP and a TB done. My total bill was $73
Look for the YELP Special for the TDAPP $10.00!! (make sure you already have the current flu shot first.
(Thank goodness I have a MTA card $3.00/hr. They also have a bathroom down the hallway.)

I came to the Adult Immunization and Travel Clinic at the Department of Health in SF to get my vaccinations in preparation for my honeymoon in June.  I called just yesterday and was able to get an appointment today.

I parked at the Civic Center parking garage which is just across the street.  $3/hr -- and I just went over an hour so I had to pay the stupid $6.

I filled out paperwork around 2:45.. I was given information to read over maybe about 10 minutes later.. and around 3:10 I was called in.

Rhonda is great!  She was informative and helpful and really made my consultation feel like it was worth the $39.  I felt that she was able to answer all my questions and she gave me information before I even asked for it.  Compared to private companies, the shots I received here were much cheaper.  I walked out of there feeling happy about the experience even though I just had three shots.

Even though I use Yelp a bunch, this is my first review, and I signed up because of Pam and my experience at the clinic. I called this morning hoping to get seen today for travel to Ecuador and Mexico and was told by the very polite receptionist that I would have to wait for two days...unless I could get down there in 15 mins for an opening. I raced down there, but with parking and traffic, I was late. Still, the receptionist remembered who I was and gave me the paperwork to fill out. Yes!

I was seen by Pam, who was wonderful, funny, and knowledgeable, and who spent close to 2 hours with me answering my every question and even dealing with me asking questions of my travel partner on the phone about where we are going (sorry to the people waiting! whoops...) Anyway, I felt like I was in good hands and not judged, even though I was late, and not entirely clean due to just returning from camping.

    Thank you Pam and crew!

Minuses -  (Small enough so they still get 5 stars.)  The office building is a little ghetto (it's in Civic), but I don't really mind since you're in and out.  Also, AI wasn't covered by my insurance, so make sure check yours first!

Pluses - No doctors fees.   Even without insurance coverage, the vaccination process was cheaper.  AI is fast, efficient, walk-in friendly (though it's a good idea to call first to see if certain immunizations are available), has courteous and well-informed nurses, and is great in helping plan for travel.  On a side note, they also offer Gardasil, the HPV vaccination ladies should look into -- even if they're just going in for overseas immunizations.

The perfect travel resource.  I definitely recommend.

I've gone to the Adult Immunization clinic twice now, and each time has been a dream.  Making an appointment is easy (and they've always had last minute appointments), everyone there is really friendly and nice, and the clinic itself looks like a nice private practice.  Most importantly, the nurses on staff are EXTREMELY knowledgeable. I had gone to my fancy Stanford doctor earlier in the week, and she definitely did not have as much (correct) information as the people working at the clinic.  If you need immunizations, they give them to you right there.  You also walk out with a handy packet of health information for the countries you're visiting, and travel in general.  You can even buy bug lotion/spray/water purification tablets when you check out.

First of all, if possible, it's best not to make international travel plans at the last minute.  Some required immunizations and prophylaxis
( such as malaria ) need to be started in advance of a journey.  Second, the Center for Disease Control website is an outstanding resource so that you will be prepared when you go to a travel clinic.

That being said, this clinic, which is part of the SF Department of Public Health, is an excellent resource.  While it is not in a plush setting, with your nurse consulting with you in a private sound proof
office ( I did say SF Department of Public Health ), this lack of amenities is made up for by their reasonable cost for service.  Most insurances do not pay for travel immunizations.  I did find out, after I went here today and paid over $350 for my immunizations that, as a
Brown and Towland patient, I could have gone to the CPMC travel clinic and I would only have had to fork over my co-pay.  I didn't even
know CPMC had a travel clinic.  As thorough as ATIT was and as
excellent as I felt my care was, I would have preferred to put that $300 toward my trip instead.

ATIT gave me a travel handbook which had good travel information, vaccine recommendations, and safety information.  Unfortunately, I'm afraid many travelers never bother to read this sort of information.

Again, I caution you, make your travel clinic appointment early on in your international vacation planning.  Do not wait until two weeks before departure.  It may be too late then to get adequate protection from necessary immunizations.

If you are traveling internationally and need vaccines, this is the place for you! It's a very small office and as other reviewers have mentioned you meet with the nurse in a cubicle so if you are loud folks in the waiting area can hear what you are saying. The prices are very reasonable and if you don't have health insurance it doesn't matter because they don't take insurance anyway. The nurse is thorough with the information and she will also highlight key info in the booklet they give you.

You have to make an appointment for any vaccines and they charge you $39.00 for the 'travel health visit consultation.' Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment so you can fill out all of the paperwork. You can also download some of the forms and bring them in with you so that you can save time and in the case it's raining cats and dogs you won't be dripping on your clipboard. :) You can download the forms on their website.
Although I made an appointment they took me in 30-35 minutes after the set time. I had plenty of info to read so I didn't mind. It was great that they were so apologetic and ended up giving me a $15 discount!

They only take certain credit cards so check before you go. It's also BART accessible. The vaccine portion goes by so quickly--you blink and next thing you know you have bandaids on your arms. In general you'll feel slight discomfort but the nurses are gentle with you. While you are at it pick up a tube of their mosquito repellent.

based on my 2 visits here, i'm a fan.  every staff person i've met (2 receptionists and 2 nurses/doctors?) has been supernice and patient; such a great change from my usual rushy-rushy visit to my primary care physician.

first you get a consultation ($35).  make an appt or walk-in.  i made an appt and waited 10-15 min. after my scheduled time to be seen.  they ask where you're going (for me, bolivia) and give you a printout of specific immunization recommendations for your destinations.  then they give you more handouts on potential diseases you can get.  if you want, you can get your shots on the same day and the $35 consult fee goes towards your shots.  they like to inform.  my parking meter ran out.

i ended up going back on a different day as a walk-in to get my yellow fever and typhoid shots.  they were playing a josh groban cd.  this time i only waited 3-5 min. before the nurse called me.  this time i still had 30 min. left on my meter when i got back to my car.  oh well.

**important: they don't take insurance.  dunno why, but maybe b/c companies like blue shield (what i have) doesn't cover immunizations that are specifically for travel purposes.  example: blue shield covers my regular tetanus booster every 10 yrs, but not a yellow fever shot.  the clinic gives you an itemized receipt you can use to petition your insurance later if you want.

parking is metered; bring lots of quarters.  also bring previous history of immunizations.  my yellow fever shot was $100; typhoid was $75.  only visa/mc/cash.

I came here to get vaccinations before going to Belize.  It's definitely a resource every travelling San Franciscan should know about, as it's quite convenient and cheaper than a doctor's office.  They take walk-ins if you know what shots you need, but if you're not sure, you should call and make an appointment for a consultation.  The nurse we talked to was extremely knowledgeable about what vaccinations we did or did not need and also about the different options for some of them (oral vs. injection, for instance).  If I ever do make that trip to India (my wife's homeland), I'll definitely be coming back here to get the works.  Now if only they could make the shots painless...
