Air Tran is an excellent airline to fly when flying domestic. Being that they were bought out by Southwest in May (and Southwest was rated in the top 10 airlines for customer satisfaction,) I am sure quality will stay the same.

I would pay extra money to fly AirTran than Delta any day.

DO NOT FLY WITH THIS AIRLINE EVER. I had a terrible first experience trying to fly with AirTran, due to an error on their part that cost me hundreds of dollars extra cost and ruined my vacation. We arrived at the airport to find that our morning flight reservation was canceled despite us receiving NO notification (we checked our email and spam history thoroughly), and we were told the flight was oversold and rudely turned away from the check-in counter at the airport. We showed the 2 employees at the counter our ticketing confirmation email, the ticket numbers, the travel agency's ticketing confirmation page, and even the charges made by AirTran to my bank account. Still, they said there was nothing they could do and forced us to leave the counter without any options. We then called AirTran Customer Services, and were told to call the travel agency (Travelation). Due to the travel agency being located in a different time zone, 7 hours passed before we were able to contact them. The agent at Travelation was able to immediately identify this was a computer error and AirTran employees should have known this and boarded us on a plane. She mediated with AirTran (who admitted fault) to get us on a flight; however, AirTran was only able to put us back on the original return flight and had to offer us a refund for the outgoing flight because they couldn't get us on a flight until over 48 hours later. We ended up having to buy a ticket from a competitor's airline (EXTREMELY expensive since we bought it the day of the flight) in order to get to our destination, and as of today (over a month later), we STILL have not received a refund for the flight we were turned away from. We have called and emailed them multiple times to no effect, and I doubt we will get ever get that refund without going through the bank and forcing AirTran to give back the money. Their only non-automated response has been to offer us a $50 coupon on a future flight: after all we went through, this could only be insulting, and since this offer is being made while they still owe us nearly $400 for the tickets they canceled, it is infuriating as well as insulting.

If all of this inconvenience is not enough to persuade you not to use this airline, I have also found out since flying with them that they are a very unsafe airline with an extremely poor safety record, unsurprising considering the sloppy way they obviously run their business. AirTran used to be called ValuJet, until an incident in 1996 when, due to  the fault of their employees, an airplane exploded into flames and crashed, killing 110 people. (Link to Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.or...) Although the airline later merged with AirTran, the article states that "ValuJet was the nominal survivor, [but] the ValuJet name was so tarnished by this time that it was scrapped in favor of the AirTran name."

I have since read reviews of this airline from other recent passengers, and like many of them, I also felt like I was taking my life in my hands flying with AirTran. I have flown a fair number of times before, and this plane seemed to be shaking and jolting at all the wrong times. They also had many passengers  (including us) whose connecting flights were far too close together; we were barely able to make our connection, and I heard many other passengers worrying about the same thing. Bottom line, this airline is unsafe, poorly run, and could cost you hundreds of extra dollars at best, and your life at worst. Do not fly with them EVER.

    Dear AirTran,

    You suck.

Why do you ask? Because my entire family (of 12) had just had a marvelously glorious week aboard a cruise ship, sailing around the Caribbean, full of fun, high spirits and joy...and you promptly destroyed the great mood.

How? We disembark at 7am and go on a fantastic excursion through the Everglades. We are dropped off at your front door at Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood Airport at noon, for a 4pm flight. I arrive at your counter with my husband, brother, and two ELDERLY PARENTS and 13 bags. 8 of those were heavy bags which we (my husband and brother) would not let our dear and ELDERLY parents handle. So there we are. 5 adults, 2 of which are old and can not carry much, handling 13 bags - 8 of which were heavy and unwieldy.

We arrive at your counter, only to be promptly told that we need to wait AN HOUR before we can get back in line with our unwieldy 13 bags, to check our bags. We had to struggle and wrestle to get through the line in the first place...now we need to move all these bags to another area, wait for an hour, to repeat the process???

And why did we need to do this? Oh yes, because YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH BAGGAGE HANDLERS to accept bags more then 3 hours before a flight.

Did I mention that we had to pay $15 for the first bags, and $25 for the second bag? I paid a total of $150 for these bags. For that you can EASILY hire a baggage handler for an hour to take our bags, and throw them in a bin marked "FOR FLIGHT 955". Guess what, it's not that hard.

Hell, for $150, I could have bought my frickin' luggage it's own damned seat on your plane...and still have money left over to buy it a lobster dinner.

So AirTran, you may have the cheapest prices, but know that your asinine policy has made you lose a customer. For life. One who will be repeating this story every chance she gets. Loudly. And with much disgust. My dad nearly threw out his back trying to help us move around all those bags, and I know that my mom became a stressed out ball of nerves...which undid all the relaxation and spa treatments from a week on a very expensive cruise.

So AirTran, screw you. You suck. You made the end of an otherwise hilariously awesome and fun week insanely stressful and annoying. Not to mention that we were also starved, but oh wait - there was no way we could move 13 pieces of luggage to the other side of the building to grab lunch.

Did I say screw you yet? Because if I haven't - screw you. You suck.

Sincerely, and with all the venom in my heart and soul,

    ~F

P.S. Just to make sure we're clear...YOU SUCK.

AirTran and Southwest are my favorite airlines.  The cheaper the better.  I bought roundtrip tickets from Indianapolis to Ft. Lauderdale the day before the flight for less than $200 - you won't see me complaining.  I'm pretty sure some of the previous reviewers are not factoring in the cost savings in to their experience.

What can I say, another great experience with AirTran.   I flew from FLL-PIT and back.  The cost, round trip, during the peak Christmas holiday season? $176.  Both flights from FLL-PIT began boarding a full 30 minutes before takeoff, pushed back on time and BOTH flights landed in their destination cities at least 10 minutes earlier than scheduled.    While my return flight was delayed about 2 hours due to mechanical trouble, they more than compensated for the inconvenience IMO by giving everyone on the plane a free round-trip ticket, redeemable anytime within the next year.  They didn't have to do that, many other airlines wouldn't have, and it was much appreciated!

Throw in the other perks like 100+ channels of free XM satellite radio at every seat in the plane, free Wi-Fi during all their flights over the holiday season and complimentary beverages and snacks (when many other airlines charge for those) and there's not much to complain about IMO.

I see a few other reivewers have posted negative reviews.  While I agree it does suck that AirTran charges for checked baggage, so do most all other carriers and compared to most, AirTran's fees are usually much cheaper.   Yes, the leg room isn't generous, especially in their 717s, but again, in an effort to try and make it through these tough economical times, many airlines are cutting back on legroom and adding an extra row of seats in their planes.

The only drawbacks I personally experienced on this trip, and they'd almost make me drop my rating back to 3 1/2 stars, was that their ticket counter at FLL is a bit disorganized since you need to stand in the same line regardless of whether you want to see a ticket agent or use the self serve check-in kiosks.   Also, I found that, while the 737 plane I flew on from PIT-FLL was great, both the 717s I took from FLL-PIT could've used some padding in the seats.

I LOVE this airline! If i'm flying somewhere in the USA, I will always use this airline. Not only are the prices excellent, but their ALWAYS on time. In fact, i'm always arriving early to my destination.

The only grip I have about this airline... is they need international flights so I can use them for my trips abroad!!!

    I highly recommend AirTran!

Sure, this is a cheap, discount airline and we shouldn't expect a whole lot of customer service... but COME ON.... REALLY!!  The people at the ticketing counter were grumpy and rude.  It really seemed like they hated their jobs.  There was a very long line and two agents refused to take anyone from the line.  The third agent took her sweet time and decided to socialize with another agent instead of helping out some customers.  The customer service here was extremely poor.  I'm willing to pay a few more bucks if it means we will actually get some efficient assistance.

Purchased my tickets three hours before departing Ft. Lauderdale airport.. The price for a one way last minute ticket was not as much as I expected, thank goodness.

As far as the airline itself goes, the staff were all friendly. It was shocking to me about the baggage charges and seat charges. I normally ask for an exit row seat for more leg room and was told it would be a $20 charge. What???? I mean really you pay for a ticket then they charge for a seat. (window seat or exit row seat) Whatever sit me anywhere is what I decided.

The plane was partially empty which worked out for me. I snagged three seats and was quite comfy. I would fly with them again as they were the best price at the time.

Airtran did pretty well in my experience.
Check in was fast, flight attendants were always around to provide drinks (not letting us feel to pull each request out their noses). Carry on is free. No movie though, but it didn't matter.

Not my favorite Airline but sometimes u can definitely find a good price. The planes are not the cleanest & the service is not bad. The flight attendants are either cool with you sometimes or anal as hell! I experienced both =p

I flew airtran from Allentown to FLL.  First let me say that the price isnt bad.  They charge for any checked bag, and obviously the more bags, the more you pay.  The seats were rock hard, its literally like sitting on rocks.  The seats in front of me were touching my knees and im only 5'11.  They assumed that everyone riding their plane was 5'1 or shorter.  Also we arrived late about 20 minutes..for absolutely no reason the weather in the departing and arriving cities were perfect.  I guess the unorganized fashion forced them to have the plane delayed.  I would try to avoid this airline at all costs.

I'm still not sure how to rate this review. We had a trip on a Wednesday at 1200pm to depart and they called us at 10am to let us know the flight had been cancelled for maintenance and the next available flight was at 5:00pm...WTF!!! (sorry) I was sooooo upset, that just threw all our plans out the door. Oh well, after that ordeal, the service at the airport counter and in the place was fine. The planes were clean and the flights, after that issue, were without problems, thank God.

Love this airline. New, generally clean planes. Free XM nice. Not only usually on time, but often early. Friendly crews in the air and on ground. Great routes. Only BIG negative is ATL hub. Refreshing alternative to the expensive, stodgy, stuffy, old legacy airlines
