4 stars for this commute service because it's a perfect option when you go from JFK into the city several times a year with only carry on luggage. The air train ride costs 5 usd, and combined with a single ticket into the city, that's a total of only 7,5 usd. The train is clean, it's safe, it's fast, it's frequent. I always managed to get a seat on the train, and you catch a glimse of the view of Jamaica, not sure if that's a good thing, but I'm thrilled just seeing anything of New York after I've landed.
The train goes in a circle and you pay when you get off and exit if you are travelling from JFK. When you are travelling to JFK from Jamaica, watching the people getting stuck in the turnstile with their luggage is good fun people watching.
Very convenient that the Air Train is connected to the subway. I'm glad I have this option and don't have to rely on rude yellow cab drivers and waiting for an hour in line out in the cold just to get into one. -
Review from Ryan W.
The AirTrain at JFK is like a really awesome burger on a stale bun. It's sleek, it's fast, it's comfortable, and it's easy to use. But to get there, you have to take the rickety NYC subway (which takes forever and involves many connections), and after you get off, you have to slog your way through JFK's interminable security line.
Thus, when I think about poor AirTrain, I don't feel as positively about it as I should.
Even more unfortunate: fixing the two kinda-crappy transportation situations on either side of the AirTrain is a little more complicated than swapping bad buns for good. (Though hey, at least JFK has a solid subway connection, which is more than one can say for La Guardia.)
Thus, I gotta give it 3 stars. And while the AirTrain itself is fast, I've also gotta warn you that the other parts of your journey will not be. So a word to the wise: budget plenty of time to get yo' self to the airport. -

I'll give it four stars because of the reason one must pay five dollars. It's similar to the one in San Francisco, Ca and it's free here. Besides that it's beyond great to go out to Manhattan or to other boroughs around the big apple. Also i can't really purchase a weekly metrocard when I pay my fair(as far as I know).

Compared to what we used to have to deal with (shuttle buses from Howard Beach Station), this is a definite improvement. I take it both ways, meaning from Jamaica and from Howard Beach. Working in Queens near LIC, I can be at the airport in 30 minutes via the E Train.
Getting to the Air Train with luggage can be a problem but once you're there, plenty of escalators and elevators. Trains are clean, reliable and I've never had any problems.
Still a shame a world class city like NYC doesn't have a one seat ride from Airport to city center. -

Train of the future. It is run by a computer and not people. Just get ready to get off at your stop. I saw a guy who couldn't get his luggage out the doors, too funny! It is confusing but you can stay on and it will go back. The seats are clean but worn.
Find a information agent in a red coat. They can help. -

This is a perfectly clean and acceptable way to get to JFK when coming from Manhattan. It's $5 per person and makes stops at every terminal. Add to that the $2.25 subway fare out there and you save big time over what cab fare would run (though you do have to haul your own luggage the whole way).
A few things worth noting if you're trying to get from Manhattan to JFK:
* When you get off the subway and wind your way to the AirTrain entrance you'll get hit up by a lot of guys wanting to take ownership of the multi-day subway pass they assume you have and no longer need.
* If you don't have one of those, you may find someone offering to "help" you add fare to your subway tickets to cover the cost of AirTrain. The guy who stepped in to handle this for us announced half-way through that he was taking all the change as his "fee" and "hey, I'm just being honest". I knew how to add my own fare but let him grab the $3 or so extra as I kind of liked his style. I was just relieved I'd not forked over a $20 bill.
* As the Air Train comes into one stop the announcement says it's "all terminals". It goes to all terminals, but that particular stop is not "all terminals". Know what terminal you're going to (little signs inside the AirTrain tell you) and then wait to get off at that exact spot. -

BEWARE!!! VERY CONFUSING. The first time I went there, I was very confused.... there are three different trains!
Yellow: This train GOES IN A CIRCLE... many people on this train were very confused and apparently went in a circle many times.
Green: Howard Beach A Train and Parking
Red: Jamaica E/Z/J trains and LIRR

The only thing that tells you what train you are getting on is by reading the monitors above... they tell you what the next train is. They run very frequently and run very efficiently. They work great and are amazingly clean. I docked one star because it is $5 to get off at Jamaica or Howard Beach exits. It is free if you are going between terminals. (But it is still a ton cheaper than a cab.) -

30 min just to leave the airport with about an additional 15 minutes to get to Jamaica station to catch the subway - at least you get to pay $5 for experience too.

Review from Hong L.
For those who want the convenience of traveling to the airport, this is one of them. The air train connects the terminals as well as to the subway and lirr. Airtrains come often (7-15 min) but do check if there are any service changes. For $5 it is a little expensive but worth the hassle than trying to find a bus to JFK from the train station and the time. Time into manhattan would be 50-60 minutes.

$45-50 by cab to JFK? You can keep it! $5 for the AirTrain to whisk you above the traffic jammed highway to get you to the airport quickly? I'll take two!
Yes, whenever my travels take me to good ol' million miles away JFK, I partake in the AirTrain. May I also recommend taking the LIRR to Jamaica station to catch it? Forget the E train. From Woodside to Jamaica is a whopping 9 minutes compared to the 50 minutes or so it takes to get there on the E.
Another awesome bonus about the AirTrain has to be the views! You're awarded awesome flyby's of the airplanes as you zip between each terminal. Now, it may be because I love airplanes and I'm a guy, but it's enough to help bolster the 5 star rating up there!
The trains arrive frequently, and I believe run every 5 minutes or so during peak hours. Riding between terminals is free, but to exit at Jamaica or Howard Beach you're going to drop the $5. -

Took the Airtrain from Long term Parking (FAR!) to JFK. Clean, quick, no complaints. Once you get to the terminal you can either stay on track and go around all the terminals or you can hop off and hop on an Airtrain (opposite side of tracks) going the opposite direction so you can go directly to your terminal.

For $5, you can get to any terminal in a clean, fast, fashionable manner. Waiting for it to arrive and getting to your terminal can be slow but when is any transportation in NYC fast? -

The good: It's a reliable and super cost-effective way to get to Manhattan from JFK. The fare consists of: $5 for the "AirTrain" ticket and $2.25 for the subway ticket. So, you pay a mere $7.25 versus $45+ for a cab ride into the city.
The bad: The Jamaica Station is a dump and it takes a little over an hour to get to lower Manhattan. Also, the make sure add at least 10-15 minutes to get from your Terminal to the AirTrain Station if you need to be in the City by a certain time.
TIP: If you're traveling from lower Manhattan (FiDi), get on at the start/end of the E train at World Trade Center (Fulton) so you avoid the fight over seating. There's also plenty of space to get your luggage and you situated for the long ride ahead. -
Review from Alexandra M.
Since I was expecting a shuttle bus this was quite amazing. It should leave from a better station though, and if they want to keep it at Jamaica Station it should not be $5.00. Really nice views as you go along as well.
If you don't have somone to drive you to JFK this is for sure the best way, unless you want to pay an absurd price (I'm just guessing) for a taxi. -

This is the most convenient way to get from JFK into Queens/Manhattan (with the LIRR).
Both times I traveled, I was traveling at off peak times, so was able to grab a seat and get comfy (especially as my return flight was out of terminal 8 - quite a ways around the entire airport).
One of the station attendants helped me purchase my ticket at Jamaica; however she rang it up - it turned out to be pretty darn cheap. I'm usually one to shy away from having help, but it wasn't busy and she came right over - so it was much appreciated. I probably would have purchased some other combo.
Highly recommend Airtrain to Jamaica and then the LIRR into Penn Station. So much cheaper than a cab, too!! -

- So, you're going (or have gone) on a trip, and want to save your sanity?
- Or, you have friends/family coming in, and want to impress them with your super-saving skills?
Well then, enter the AirTrain. The massive project that made getting to and around JFK 100x easier.
- It's clean.
- It's fast.
- It's convenient.
- It's $7.50 total ($5 to get on, and $2.50 to connect from the A-Train). Which in turn will save you about $35-40 in money (since you won't have to take a cab from Manhattan or another borough to here).
See...you're impressing your friends/family already! :-)
=============Pro-Tips=============
1) You don't have to pay $5 again to exit the train, if you get off at Terminal 4 and get a cab or the Q10 bus.
2) There *is* a monthly pass for the AirTrain. It's $40, which in-turn will save you up to of $60 per Month if you travel a lot.
See! There's those super-saving skills again, just impressing all those around you! :-)
3) The Jamaica Station isn't the only stop that connects the AirTrain to the MTA trains. you can also get it Howard Beach & Lefferts Blvd.

I moved to New York and I became a fan of public transit. I never thought I'd see the day either, but join me on my South Brooklyn to JFK expedition, sans wheels.
F to A to Airtrain to JFK = no motion sickness.
You see, a car from my home to JFK is quicker, yes. However, I get plunked at JFK and it takes me an hour to recover from the herky jerky driving on local roads all the way. (Save if it is VERY early and they take the south highway, that's a dream). It's also $38 + tip. Also, the last time "Fernando" was my driver and I had to hear an in depth story about how he has come to appreciate women (his wife, especially!) and how it got her to sleep with him more.
Sooooo, let's try this Airtrain thing.
The yellow lines on the subway maps intrigued me. Let's do this sucker.
1. Cost = $5 on the Airtrain from Jamaica or Howard Beach (+ $2.25 subway to get there, presumably). Some might argue this is a monopoly since literally the subways DO NOT run anywhere close enough to get to JFK, but alas this is how it is. The upside is you can pay with your Metrocard (no unlimiteds), it's there, and it's really, really nice. The station feels very safe, comfortable and the train ride is quick.
2. There is a list of airlines and corresponding terminals within the Airtrain. Save yourself some frantic rushing to this list and just figure out what terminal you need to be in before you depart.
3. The Airtrain doesn't get you RIGHT INSIDE the airport. But, close. I was flying out of Terminal 2 (woefully, as I dreamed of Terminal 5) and had to cross the street outside, etc. It's not a far walk, but for the elderly or those traveling heavily or in the bitter cold winter months, this isn't really a good option. Up to you.
4. On the return trip (going into NYC, if you're visiting), you pay the Airtrain fare as you depart at the subway station.
Overall it takes longer, but if it saves me $30 each way + motion sickness, it's a worthwhile time travel investment.Listed in: New York Travel

Yeah, $5 is too much for a dinky airport train ride. It is strictly a tourist tax.
But, why not make the best of a bad situation if you're roundtripping to/from the five boroughs: Buy a $13.55 metrocard and it gives you a bonus boost to $14.50, which is ($5 airtrain + $2.25) * 2, precisely what you need.
So you can tell your boss that when you traveled on business, you saved them ONE DOLLAH. What up.
(Or, for the less scrupulous, buy the $14.50 metrocard and pocket the $1 bonus.)
UPDATE: An even better deal would be to buy a 10 ride for $25. This makes every ride $2.50 instead of $5, 50% savings if you buy in bulk. Keep in mind that this card expires within 6 months. So to use every ride, you need to take 5 round trips in 6 months. If you travel near monthly like me, it's worth it. But to make it pay for itself, you only need 5 one way trips, and then it's uphill from there. So even if you're not sure, it could be worthwhile to buy this card. You get these at the vending machines at the AirTrain stop. -

When it comes to getting to/from JFK, the LIRR and AirTrain combo is my drug of choice.
I know I pay a little more with the LIRR. It's worth it for me to ride on a (mostly) clean and comfy train with (mostly) non-crazy people. Plus, I'm close the Atlantic Terminal so it's a no brainer.
And yes, I know 5 bucks for the AirTrain is a little pricey. But if it's outside of 10pm-6am, I'm not taking a cab to JFK. And I'm probably not driving either. So public transportation is looking pretty good to me.
The train generally seems to run without issues. Every now and then there is a hiccup where it stops on the tracks for a while or doesn't come as often. Frustrating, but again, it's public transportation.
Every time I see it approaching the station, I have flashbacks to the excitement of being 4 years old and getting on the monorail at Disney. Ok, so I'm probably not going to Disney. But hopefully I am flying somewhere fun! -

I am a BIG fan of the JFK Airtrain--I remember what a horror show it was *before* they opened this puppy up. Standing around in the bitter cold trying to make transfers...eeeh. NO thank you!
Just the memory of how it used to be makes it that much easier for me to fork over the $5 bucks for the clean, modern terminals and comfortable ride directly to my beloved Terminal 2 (not so much 3).
As a travel junkie, having easy access to and from airports is like manna to me--whenever I have to take that damn sardine can called the M60 to get to LaGuardia, I longingly think of the JFK Airtrain and sigh. -
Review from Claire F.
Easy peasy lemon squeesy. The AirTrain is cleaner, faster, and all around easier to deal with than the old method of taking the subway to near the airport and that monorail thing they had jury-rigged. Shudder. That was scary.
$5 on a charge-up Metrocard (sorry, no monthlies) will get you from the Jamaica LIRR (aka the Jamaica subway station) to the airport. For those of us who like to travel light, it makes it a pretty simple/cheap way to get to JFK. If I lived anywhere near any of the blue subway lines, I'd be a regular.Listed in: San Francisco, Viaje a Puerto Rico, Monorail !

F.Y.I: Plain and simple...Its a convenient way to get to JFK if you don't have a car or don't want to pay ridiculous prices taking a cab from Ronk Station. Honestly, paying $5 is not that bad and I would definitely recommend taking the AirTrain. Taking the Airtrain is easy as 1, 2, 3!

Take the train to purgatory HELL!
For $5.00 one way fare from Jamaica or Howard Beach Station gains all Terminal access. Inter-terminal travel is free, where I needed to gain access from one Terminal to another. A two car train which operates eight minute intervals during peak travel time and twelve minutes to an eternity fifteen minutes for off-peak travel time. Travel time for AirTrain is ungodly slow as waiting for an eternal salvation!! Trains are relativity clean despite of the age of the train it already contain visible signs of wear and tear in the seats. Announcements are audible though not frequent to notify passengers of the next stop or current stop name. There are minimal baggage racks. The trains are not driven by humans, unlike MTA, but all auto digitalized pilot mode.
AirTrain JFK constantly breaks down during heavy peak travel time usage forcing passengers to disembark for the train to be "out of service." The trains are mostly inoperable forcing passengers to take a shuttle bus or waiting another eternity for the next train. It does NOT take passengers to all eight terminals as I walk on foot to get to my designated terminal!!
Albeit Port Authority's good efforts to interlink all eight terminals at John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), they cannot connect to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) which both are in Queens. -
Review from Jackie S.
I think it is a rip off to charge $5 for a short train ride, however, Airtrain allowed me to get to the LIRR and back to the JFK airport. Taking Airtrain, LIRR, and Subway is a lot cheaper than the $50 taxi ride when we came from La Guardia Airport.
Total Cost from JFK to Manhattan: $5 (for Airtrain) + $3.75 (LIRR for weekend price) + $2.25 (for subway) = $11 -

This shuttle train is a swindle.
Its confusing and you will most likely have to ask for assistance. It is however convenient to public transportation. Here's where the swindle comes in
If you take the subway, the cost of the airtrain is 5 dollars a person on top of your 2.25 subway fare. But, if you take the bus like we did (the B-15) the airtrain is free. No sense in paying 2 fares when you can pay 1. However if you are on a time crunch or not travelling to Brooklyn, just pay the 5 bucks to get to Manhattan quickly.
Nowhere do they advertise how to get to the B-15 or that you can take it to and from the airport. We found that this bus is mostly taken by airport employees. If you are travelling from Brooklyn do yourself a favor and just take the bus and don't get charged the extra 5 dollar for what can and should be a free shuttle ride.
The only downside is the bus stop outside of the airtrain is a bit shady at night and if you are a woman expect strange men to "try to holla" for lack of a better term. -
Review from Julie L.
No complaints here. For $5 this is probably the cheapest way to get out of JFK and onto public transit and into Manhattan. Especially convenient as a visitor or business traveler that has no one to come pick them up at the airport!
Really visible signage and easy to follow directional information to get to the AirTrain from the arrival terminals.
AirTrains arrive every 5 minutes or so during peak hours and alternates between Jamaica and Howard Beach. They announce which train is headed where right before the train arrives. So listen carefully in case you get on the wrong one. The only thing that is lacking is that I wish they had visible digital signs on the train or on the LCD screens hanging in the stationto show you where the train is headed.
Once you get inside the AirTrain, there is tons of open space to stand and store luggage with a few racks on the side too. The ride is relatively smooth. It stops at all terminals and inside the train they have maps of which airlines depart from what terminal. Takes about 15 minutes to get from JFK to Jamaica station.
Convenient, clean and fast! -
Review from Jim U.
It has been quite some time since I have had to go to JFK for any reason. I think my last flight from here was a flight back to Ghana in 2000. In those days, it was not so easy to arrive at the airport. After waiting forever on the A train, one had to catch a bus which would stop at each and every parking lot and then make its way around all of the terminals. It was interminable, and space was at a premium.
Fortunately, in the time since those days, a superior alternative has arrived: Air Train. The downside is that you now have to pay $5 for the train, when you used to be able to take the bus for free. The upside is considerable though. The service is quick and regular. The train car is quite a bit more spacious than a bus too. It's cleaner as well. Everything is really well marked, so you can't possibly mess it up. I like it this way now. The best part is that if you are just trying to get a rental car, it's the first stop! -

Public transportation that will get you to the NYC subway!
$5 is the cost of the AirTrain ride and another $2.25 for the subway. You will need to put at least $7.25 on the metrocard in order to get to Manhattan but it's the cheapest option if you are on a budget. Depending on where you're going you'll either want to get off at Howard Beach Station to catch the A train or Jamaica station for the E train.
The trains are all automated and there is no operator on board.Listed in: New York

Traveling to JFK? Taking the AirTrain from Howard beach or Jamaica? No well than you sir are an a@@h@le.Last time I took this was about 2 weeks ago coming home from san francisco.
That's right relatively cheap or extremely cheap considering if you taxi or drive instead. The AirTrain is a whopping 5 dollars plus the cost of your subway ride. Plus its very fast with max terminals there are maybe 11 stops totaling about 25 minutes to do a full loop.
It is well lit and very easy to navigate with all the monitors at every stop. If your coming into NY and need to rent a car or go to another terminal the
AirTrain is free within the airport and you don't pay till you exit at jamaica/Lirr or Howard beach subways. -

Although I've only used these monorail shuttles a few times, the few times I took them, they were fast and efficient. Since there was no real driver(computer driven), the train new exactly where to go. They are always clean, however, there is sometimes when it gets crowded on these trains as you travel from terminal to terminal.
Most stations are too far up high. Bring a pillow when taking the escalator up. It's quite steep, going upwards. Make sure your ears have been flushed, shortly before going up these escalators, or the pressure will get to your head.(All stations are like that). They may have elevators, but these are just as bad, if not a problem on temperature. The elevators seemed to have been much warmer on a hot day in May and July.
Otherwise, most seats allow you to look out the sides of the car, at each and every one of the terminals. The front cars are the best ones to ride, so interpret the direction of travel as the cars are always traveling leftward from the station. (Front cars are the ones to the left-most. Just make sure you're heading to the correct direction on station.
Although travel is free between Terminals, if you take this train to the hub stations at Jamaica Station(Jamaica, NY)or Howard Beach, travel is not free. You'll have to pay a fee, if your end station is at either of these two stations. I took this train on a round-trip course from the hub and back. Travel time took about 30 minutes. Besides having to pay for the card itself and the initial travel deposit, I also had to pay at the end, due to short amount of funds.
Some payment cards allow you to roll the funds over to Subway and bus fares, however there are some cards that allow you to ride to the airport from the hub and back(and not). They do not sell at these stations cards that roll themselves over into MTA unlimited farecards(for subway use).
Otherwise it stops once for Federal Circle(transfer from Jamaica to Howard Beach line point(listen closely to make sure you're getting on the right line), then Terminal 1, then Terminals 2&3, then Terminals 4, then Terminal 5, then Terminal 6.
It's amazing what this monorail shuttle can do is such little time! -
Review from Scott Y.
I used the AirTrain for the first time last night to meet my girlfriend at the AirPort. I don't know if it's always this easy, but if it is, I've been wasting a lot of my company's money on taxis. The LIRR is $5.75 from Penn to Jamaica. The AirTrain is another $5. That's $10.75 to get to JFK faster than a taxi, and with less hassle. Plus, I would imagine that there is a lot less variance in how long this whole process takes, since there is no traffic.
I don't know how often the AirTrain runs, but I know that in my one experience it pulled up about 90 seconds after I walked into the waiting area. They even had a friendly and knowledgeable (I know, right) MTA employee there to help people figure out how to use the touchscreen map of the AirTrain stops.
All around, this was an awesome experience. -

Yes! It is only $5 and connects you directly to the subway system and LIRR. If you did not pack too much luggage, then you can avoid cabs and car services. The Airtrain is also free within the airport terminals.
Just a note: My Mom was lost for almost an hour on the Airtrain because she was trying to connect to the Howard Beach train station, yet kept getting on the Jamaica train. Just keep in mind that there are two trains with different destinations, because it is not announced. -

AirTrain, how I love thee. Getting to and around JFK is pretty tricky; ask anybody. But with the existence of the Air Train, it makes getting to the terminals SO MUCH easier! I will gladly pay the $5 dollar fee to get on the train, why because it is cost efficient.
The trains come so frequently that you should never have to worry about missing your flight. This was part of my first airplane experience, so I was super happy.
And I am a sucker for beautiful views, so if you ever find yourself on the airtrain, make sure you look out the window to enjoy the view.
So to sum things up, I love the train, and you will too. -
Review from Althea A.
I like riding the airtrain just because of the recorded announcement before it starts: "Please Hold On!" It makes it sound like you're about to embark on an amusement park ride, or at least like it's about to whoosh you off at a dizzying 80 miles an hour or something.
Of course, it's really more like a sedate 10 miles an hour, but hey. I remember the day when you had to take a bus to get to the A train, and believe me, the airtrain is a big improvement. It still should be included on the unlimited ride metrocard, though.
