This is a great gym. I moved to SD recently and was really looking for a place near my
house I could do TRX and Pilates. I've been working out consistently for most of my adult life and I have to say I really like this place. The people, staff and members alike, are all really friendly and the workouts are very intense/results oriented without being ridiculous (so basically you don't need to piggy back a body builder around the block like you would in cross fit.)
It should be said that I have a couple of injuries that need a bit of special attention and the team never hesitates to "customise" my training while in a group setting. I think this is a place that beginners and fitness buffs can enjoy.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Juan C.San Diego, CA3776Jun 21, 2016
Not that they need another 5 star review but they deserve it!
So let preface this by saying I have a free gym in my office building, a gym in my apartment building and my partner works for the YMCA so I have free access to all those gyms...and yet I'm more than willing to pay the monthly rate to come here! It's totally worth it and a great value.
I'm not one of those ppl that LOVE to work out - I only do it b/c I'm overweight and know working out is good for me. Jen & Laura make working out bearable. The exercises change every time and it's a full body workout. They are always watching and offer modifications if needed or will point out if your posture or form needs correcting. The music playing during the workout is always fast paced and 'gets you in the zone'.
Another highlight is the other attendees. They are always friendly and encouraging. Zero attitude or pretentiousness(is that a real word?) even though they are kicking butt. When a woman half my size is doing the workout twice as good as I am...it motivates me to stop whining and work harder.
ok so the best for last: Angela's yoga sculpt on Mondays is amazing. I always feel more balance and relaxed afterwards but still get a good sweat and workout in. After her class then I'm finally ready to 'start the week'.
highly recommended!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 94436718May 5, 2015
I have been here at least a dozen times now, and I am a really big fan of what they are doing. The gym itself is medium in size (somewhere in between a boutique studio and a corporate gym), where they focus on personal, team and small group training. I have only done the team training, but I can tell you that the instructors are so focused, that even the team training feels like personal training. They are truly committed to making sure you get a proper workout.
The classes here are difficult. They are definitely geared toward people that want to burn calories efficiently. This isn't the type of gym where you go to talk to your gal pals about the cute boy on the treadmill. No matter what class you take, you will probably feel something the next day -- that is a good thing. That being said, there are people of all shapes and sizes here. No matter what your fitness level, they will accommodate you.
Being that the gym is located downtown, it is built with the downtown office crowd in mind. Classes are offered early morning, noon, and after work only. If I worked downtown, I would have a membership here. Unfortunately, the limited class schedule doesn't work for me, and I have to limit myself to the occasional pop-in. If you decide to pop-in too, there is a parking lot next door that is $1/hour. This is perfect because most classes are 45 minutes.
If you are located in the downtown area, and looking for something that will truly ramp up your workout, this is your place!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you Jocelyn! We love working out with you!

I'm writing an update to add a little more about my experiences here:
1) I have been coming almost a year, 1-2 times per week. My arms have more muscle tone than ever! If only I committed to my diet the way I do working out, I'd probably be able to get rid of my FUPA :)
2) This gym is social. Once a month they plan events for friends and family, i.e. workout in Balboa, workout on the roof followed by RA sushi lunch, Padres game, and a trip to Vegas!
3) They really make you feel like a family and take the time to make sure you are doing everything correctly. They're also supportive and challenging without being annoying.
I can't stress enough how great the all around experience at Aire has been. It's worth every penny. If you don't at least check them out for the free week, you are totally missing out!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Aug 17, 2012Previous reviewI've been to lots of gyms, pilates and yoga studios (not that it shows!) and this is by far one of the best. I love that you can do EVERYthing here...cardio, strength, pilates, yoga, bar-ish classes, etc. The diversity of the classes and the methods they use make it well worth the $$. Everything is interval based, so just about when you start to internally curse the instructor, they switch it up to something new. I've primarily only worked with Kelli (who is an awesome, patient and motivating instructor!) and I had one class with Jennie who is also great.
The locker rooms are clean and they have very nice complimentary products. Parking is validated right next door. Also, for a downtown location, no douche-baggy scene, which is greatly appreciated as well. - Charlotte H.San Diego, CA144014Feb 4, 2016
I have been going to Aire for a couple years now. It offers high intensity classes for all kinds of fitness levels. Pablo, AJ, and Jen are great trainers that really push you past your comfort level to get you to reach your potential. They are also really great about modifying exercises for injuries, which is a big help! I have gotten a lot stronger and my injuries have subsided with the help of the trainers. Jen (the owner + trainer) is accommodating to individual circumstances if membership needs to be put on hold. I'll be a little more detailed here because in my opinion, there are pros and cons and I think it's a big help knowing small details about a gym. To be clear, this is a class-based gym, not an "open" gym.
Pros:
-Awesome, experienced trainers that mix it up with exercises every week.
-Good variety in music.
-Clean facility with sanitary wipes for equipment and mats after use.
-Feels safe inside because it is in a basement and has locked doors during class times (in case there is just one staff member teaching).
-Family atmosphere, great group of members that are encouraging and kind.
-Gym outings -- sometimes members will go to brunch together or events in San Diego.
-A variety of classes.
-Snack/beverage machine.
-Clean towels and some amenities for the shower.
-Location is awesome, very central.
-Offer physical therapy options and personal training sessions.
Cons:
-Only cold water showers in the women's locker room.
-No air conditioning in a basement gym.
-$1 parking with validation... just adds to the membership fee essentially.
-No classes later than 9am on Saturday morning.
-No Sunday classes.
-Sparse machines to use before/after class for warm up or for a little extra exercise.
-Gym doors are locked until 10 minutes before class, so getting there early for warming up or treadmill isn't much of an option.
-Location can sometimes be frustrating because of frequent construction or traffic/parking issues due to events at House of Blues. It's not great at night because there are many homeless people and I have had some unsafe encounters before.
All in all 4/5 stars. The pros outweigh the cons, but I felt like it was necessary to mention cons for people who have specific requirements for which gym they join.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Laura B.San Diego, CA103421Jul 16, 2015Purchased a Yelp Deal
I've been coming here for a month now and I love it. Great and efficient workouts. I love the variation.
Two weeks into my first month, I broke my toe pretty badly. They have been excellent about helping adjust the workouts for this limitation while still kicking my butt. Jenn and AJ are both excellent teachers and motivators.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Great gym with awesome trainers! I have been going to this gym for over 2 years and it is the only reason I am able to stay in shape. The group class circuit style training is a huge motivator and never gets old since it changes every week. It really promotes well-rounded full body fitness.
The lunch classes are perfect for me since I can't get up early enough and am too exhausted by the end of the day to get in to the gym.
I tried my own program at a gym for a while, but I lost motivation and didn't change it up enough. I love not having to think about it and just do what I'm told for 45 minutes and let the group and trainer push me to my limit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Nothing but good things to say about Aire! The classes are pretty small, so don't think you can hide in a corner and escape from being called out on your form, because it WILL happen (I speak from experience, ha ha). Personally, I like the fact that they give you individual attention because if you give me some type of out... I will take it! (Horrible, I know. But self discipline has never been my strong suit when it comes to working out. But hey, I'm working on it haha.)
The workouts are usually timed circuits where you are constantly rotating stations. It goes by fast and never gets boring. You don't realize how much you are actually working out until the soreness sets into your muscles later that day! Only down side is it is a wee bit pricey. My contract ended so I decided to try out another gym downtown that both my bf & I can go to (he likes more equipment type exercises and I like taking classes) and was a little bit cheaper than Aire. After about a month at the new gym, I can definitely see the difference between the quality of workout with Aire and any other gym. Plus, at Aire, you don't have weird dudes grunting and staring at you/themselves in the mirrors the whole time. If you REALLY want to get into shape, Aire is the place to be. I've recommended Aire to all of my friends and they love it too!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Josh C.Lake Forest, CA17141Jan 10, 2015
About Aire, beautiful facility! The gym is located underground, one story under street level. All the equipment is either new or slightly used but is perfect working condition. The staff was friendly and inviting, engaging us in conversation right from the start. And it wasn't that forced, "blah, hi welcome"you get at 24 Hour Fitness or some of these other commercial gyms.
We took a HIIT (high intensity interval training) with AJ and it was awesome. I enjoyed his charisma and motivational tone throughout the workout. Post workout, he gave my gf and I a few cool down / stretching tips. Needless to say, AJ is a rockstar trainer and I am looking forward to taking another one of his classes. He had us work through a variety of exercises utilizing the tabata intervals (20 sec work, 10 sec rest).
I've taken a few exercises classes in my time and never really cared for them.
Overall I had a great experience and I will be back. Thanks #FitnHelpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ladi B.San Diego, CA12314Feb 20, 2016
I've been a member for almost 5 years and my review is well over-due.
I can honestly say that I can call Aire my second home and throughout these years I have met the most amazing trainers.
The classes are challenging; but who doesn't love a challenge? I've learned so much about fitness and living a healthier lifestyle since I've joined.
Aire fitness has a great feel to it and gives a good vibe. Nice mix of music playing in the background.
Gym upkeep and service is excellent.
Ladies locker room is impeccable clean.
Clean warm towels waiting.
Well equipped with hygiene products and beauty products.
I prefer this small style gym. There is a great mix of equipment and has something for everyone. Personal training also available for extra motivation and support.
The best part of this gym by far, is that I continue to see all the employees greeting everyone by name and with easy access from the parking garage ($1 w/ validation)
There are different competitions that run monthly and throughout the year. It keeps you motivated. Plus, when you're a regular, others notice when you miss class. (Tell me about it!.)
A+ in my book. A great local gym that has it all. I look forward to spending my lunch hour right at Aire Fitness.

Joined a month ago and really enjoy this gym. The classes are challenging and fast paced. There are lots of different times to pick from and different levels of difficulty.
I like that I don't have to think about what I'm going to do at the gym, I just show up and they have a great workout ready to go.
Very friendly and motivating trainers, I highly recommend this gym because it's a gym membership you will actually use.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
