This was about an hour or so from Sanibel so we made a side trip to take the kids on an airboat tour.
It's in a small farming town that isn't at all touristy.
When you pull up you go into a country store and purchase your tickets.  The older man that works it (and probably owns it) is very nice and entertaining with the kids.  They also have some birds, snakes, and gators you can watch them feed, and if you ask you can hold a baby gator too.
Our tour captain did a great job showing everyone what birds were what and about thier habitats.
The kids and I enjoyed ourselves.

Being an absolute city girl (from Boston), I'm not really big on the whole nature-one-with-the-sky-hiking-kayaking scene. It's just not me. I mean, I can really appreciate the beauty of a really gorgeous nature scene. You just won't find me in it 24/7. But, for my vacation, I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone and try an air boat tour that GUARANTEES alligator sightings. Sweeeet.

About an hour drive from Ft. Myers, my friends and I packed into our rented SUV and headed down. Lemme tell you, this place is definitely off the beaten path. I found myself questioning if we were, literally, in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty desolate.

We get there and the place itself looks kinda beat up. There's a store in front with random bird cages (with parrots that caw "Polly wanna cracker?"), snakes cages, chickens, and an iguana. I guess it can't decide if it's a bait shop or a zoo. It's definitely...interesting.

Our tour guide is a heavyset guy named Phil (Bob? Carl? I'm horrible with names) who has the heaviest southern accent you will ever hear. (Since when do Floridians have accents? I had no idea...)

So anyways, Phil/Bob/Carl takes us on a hour long ride. Maybe it was me being a total city girl, but the scenery was gorgeous and we saw at LEAST 100 alligators. No lie. Some were literally two feet away from the boat and over 10 feet long. Scary stuff. The lake itself is home to over 4000 alligators. Nearly peed myself when I heard that.

My friends told me that they've had better air boat rides, but personally, I loved it. It's definitely a step towards the crunchier, more nature-conscious me :)
