INCREDIBLE taffy. We went here twice during our 2 night stay - that should say something.

What happened? Did they change owners? Usually my favorite taffy, but this time was a disappointment. I was in last Saturday afternoon, and they were out of the peanut butter flavor?? On a Saturday?? They said they wouldn't have any more untbil Monday. Why would you not have a good stock of a popular flavor on the busiest day of the week? Also, the taffy I did buy did not have the same buttery flavor that it use to, are they changing the recipe, maybe using cheaper ingredients?

Oh, the nostalgia! I LOVE Ainslee's. I love that they make thier own goodies, I love that it's famaily owned and operated, I love the location, I love.... We come back whenever we are anywhere along the coast, and plan our trip to drive through Depot Bay just to get some taffy and caramel corn!
I can't eat as much sugar as I did when I was little without feeling seriously ill, but its hard to leave Ainslee's without a big bag of taffy (cinnamon are my favorite... and vanilla... and hot cinnamon). Somehow we find that by the time we've reached Tillamook that the whole bag is gone.
We are going in two days. I am SO EXCITED.
(This is not a health food place, obviously. We like our natural colors and everything, but as a once every other year or so treat I could care less. Seriously. If I only eat shortening-based candies that rarely surely it won't matter, right?! Worth every bite. I won't go NEAR any other salt water taffy. Ever.) :) -

It's just salt water taffy. I don't know why I talk myself into buying it every time I'm at the beach. I never eat it all and it just sits around my house for god knows how long. The flavor selection of taffy was not very impressive. Lots of Blue Raspberry's and Berry Cheesecake and Raspberry Ripple. I HATE Raspberry flavored candies! Plus the flavors didn't really taste like what they were supposed to.
Why aren't taffy makers more adventurous and explore a new world of flavors? Give some coconut ginger or chocolate chipotle ...
The fudge was terrible. Peanut Butter fudge tasted like they just melted peanut butter chips down into blocks.
I just have to tell myself from now on, "I will never buy taffy while at the coast again, I will never buy taffy while at the coast again, I will never buy taffy..........." -

I have been going to Ainslee's since I was a kid (more than 20 years!) and it is the ONLY place I will eat caramel corn! They have all sorts of flavors of taffy but I stick to the old faves Vanilla, Butter Cream, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate w/ Peanut Butter. The Peanut Butter ones giving you a little ooze of real peanut butter when you bite into them! For some reason I think the texture has changed of the taffy over the years and the Butter Cream is a different color but still the only taffy I'll eat!

For the love of sugar(!) you should go here! They have the best carmel corn evah! They make the salt water taffy right there, you can watch them make it. For example: watch them mix the peanut butter into the taffy then put it into the taffy puller.
Been going here for about 24 years and it still tastes the same as I remember. -

Every year when my sister comes to visit from Michigan, we have to make a stop here for their salt water taffy.
Anyone can watch the taffy being made/pulled right through the window from the sidewalk. It is pretty interesting watching how it works. Unfortunately, based on our experiences the last couple years, it appears that Ainslee's machine is about as old as Ainslee's, because the poor taffy maker seems to be repairing it more then he is actually making taffy.
They also have ice cream here, caramel corn, chocolates and other sundry goodies. Definitely a cool shop in a small town worth visiting! -

I love salt water taffy, it is one of the best things about a trip to the coast. Unfortunately most shops that sell it buy it from elsewhere. Finding a shop, like Ainslee's, that is still making it on site is a extra special treat.
We popped in here recently and were delighted by the big slab of molasses taffy resting on a tray in the window next to the big machine for wrapping. A strategically placed blower fills the sidewalk with the enticing scent of hot sugar! Inside we saw they were prepping another fresh batch of delicious kettle corn as well as getting the molasses taffy set up for wrapping.
We were further delighted to discover that the taffy also contains no egg whites. All flavors except for the obvious "Butter" and "Toffee" were vegan, although we did not specifically ask which brand of sugar they use. At least at first glance this freshly made taffy is vegan. We quickly grabbed a bag and stuffed it full of the best taffy we'd had the whole trip. The molasses is wonderful and richly flavored. I am a big fan of the peanut butter and the pina colada flavors as well.
