Review from Linda E.
El Cajon, CA
When I was looking for a place to train in Aikido, I was hoping to find a professionally run dojo, a safe, well-designed facility, and competent instruction. I have found so much more than that at Aikido of San Diego.
I started training here with Goldberg Sensei in 2009. He and the other instructors are skilled and patient teachers, all with many years of experience. (I was particularly impressed that Sensei has degrees in both Teaching and Philosophy.) The quality of instruction is well beyond what I had expected, exploring both the martial and philosophical aspects of Aikido in depth. Training here has been a life-changing experience in many ways, all for the better.
The dojo is very diverse community - smart, kind, compassionate, and dedicated people of all ages, professions, and skill levels. In addition to regular classes, there are focused workshops, multi-day seminars, retreats, and social events just for fun.
I don't have kids, but have been so impressed with the children's classes - always taught by Sensei. It's clear the kids are appropriately challenged, training cooperatively together, respecting Sensei and each other, and having a great time.
Come play. If you're on the fence, come watch first (people do it all the time, don't worry). See you on the mat.
(p.s. I don't know who the reviewer "david s." is. Never met him. But that's not what it's about, truly.) -

Had I still been living in Mission valley I would still be training here to this day. Goldberg Sensei is a great guy and you do get a ton of support from the other students -esepcially the senior ones. I had previously tried another aikido school (that had a reputation of being the "best" in town) prior to coming here and I was laughed at because I didn't even know how to do a roll. But when I came to AIkido of SD, everyone was just so cool, helpful and supportive, so I signed up right there and then. If you are looking for a place to learn practical self defense in a non threatening, non competitive and stress free environment, this is the place to be.

I've been practicing Aikido for more years than I care to remember, so when I moved to San Diego I checked out all the options for traditional Aikido. After meeting Dave Goldberg Sensei and then training, I decided to join. That was 8 years ago and one of my best life decisions. Having trained at many dojos and clubs, I'd recommend Aikido of SD for the friendly atmosphere, and to be quite frank, the commitment to authentic and progressive Aikido. Go for it!

Specialties
We specialize in the unique martial art of Aikido. We offer Aikido classes six days/week for adults (and teens 14+) of all levels. Our children's program has classes two days/week for kids 8-13, and a very special class for kids 5-7 that runs in 8-week terms. Originally known as Aikido of Mission Valley, we've been a San Diego asset since 2000. ASD is for people who want a traditional martial arts experience that complements all aspects of life. Expect to be training among others who are also interested in cultivating a peaceful warrior spirit, and a more effective flow in their actions. Our members tend to be motivated and open-minded people who want to develop in body, mind, and spirit, and discover new foundations for a more effective and fulfilling relationship with life.
History
Established in 2000
We were originally established as Aikido of Mission Valley. Under the guidance of Dave Goldberg Sensei, Aikido of San Diego has grown significantly, and has become a community of people interested not only in martial arts, but in how the practice of AIkido benefits their lives.
Meet the Business Owner: Dave G.
The Chief Instructor and Director of Aikido of San Diego is Dave Goldberg Sensei. He presently holds the rank of Go-Dan (5th degree black belt). Mr. Goldberg spent three-and-a-half years in Japan studying with some of the Founder's most enduring and prolific disciples. He founded the dojo in 2000, and has been the Chief Instructor of UCSD's Aikido program since 1998. Goldberg Sensei holds a BA in Philosophy, and an MA in Teaching. He is also a certificated holistic health practitioner (HHP) with an interest in body psychology. Goldberg Sensei served on academic faculties in the US and Japan for nine years before professionally devoting himself to Aikido full-time. Dave Goldberg Sensei's work in Aikido is inspired by the Founder's vision that Aikido is here for us to develop ourselves as more harmonious, effective, and compassionate people.
