LOVE THIS PLACE.
When I first moved out here I refused to eat here cause it looked like it was a Photo Lab store.  Finally after hearing rave reviews I went and haven't stopped going since.  The service is good for a walk up window and they give you endless fries.  Food made to order and they even have homemade chili which was real good too.  You have to try this place its great.  They also have breakfast which was pretty tasty as well.

Ahn's is the straight shit.  Simple, delicious burger stand food.

Heavenly burgers.
Bomb ass milkshakes.
Perfectly executed crinkle fries.

Don't be fooled by the hood-tastic exterior (and interior) of the place, or the fact that they lock up their doors at sundown and operate solely out of a walk-up window.

So splurge on some good old American fast food and sit in your Honda Civic and pretend it's a chopped-and-channeled 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe.  Leave the onions off your burger and maybe you'll get lucky up at Makeout Point.

I was going to post a link to a clip from "American Graffiti," but I find Leah Thompson bitch-slapping the living daylights out of Craig Sheffer in "Some Kind Of Wonderful" (3:40) to be much more entertaining.

I came to visit the boyfriend on a Sunday morning, he had just moved to the neighborhood and we were looking for something to grub on. We walked over to Ahn's Burgers... From the outside the place looks rundown, but I was surprised to see quite a few people sitting inside. The decor needs some updating, but whatever, I've had some of the best food at some of the places you would least expect. We sat in the corner and both ordered cheeseburgers, fries and a coffee. The person taking our order was nice.

Our orders were ready pretty fast and we walked over to the lake to eat our burgers in one of the benches. My cheeseburger was so pretty , it reminded me of one of those crabby patties from SpongeBob Squarepants. You know, the crabby patties that look so pretty and nicely put together. It was tasty and cooked just right. One order of crinkle fries was enough for both of us. Will come back again. Great price, we paid about $7 each (including coffee).

Oh, make sure that you bring cash because they only take cash.

Seriously?!  Who is giving Ahn's 5 stars?

It's edible, but not memorable.

I can think of 5 other places that I'd rather get a burger at than this.  if you are in the neighborhood, try Sidebar up the street, which makes a burger out of Niman Ranch that is 100 times better, and it only costs about $4 more.

Great dive place for burgers. And breakfast! I recommend the chicken sandwich (it's a patty, not a breast filet).

The service is super good, but it's usually only a person or two.

Milkshakes are super thick and tasty!
The fries are crinkle cut and are okay.  I usually select through to find the most cooked ones, I find some to be too soft for me.  But I like crisp fries. (A friend of mine told me that he gets the fries "well done" and it makes a big difference.  I took his advice, and I'd like to report he was totally right.  Get the fries well done, and they're awesome.)

You might have a food coma after eating here, but once in a while it really hits the spot.

Popular little place, so I was glad to find it. Love the crinkle fries. Burger was good and I loved the bun, so fresh, and grilled on the inside. Breakfast looked really good as well, if not a bit overpriced. But everyone seemed to clean their plates. The place was dark and in need of decor, but the staff was nice and the one guy was running all around, keeping the patrons happy. Wish my neighborhood had a place like this.

I couldn't wait to eat at Ahn's when I first moved to the area - it always smells GREAT! ...but (notice the stars) I really don't think it's much to fuss about.

The first time I went, my burger was such a greasy mess that it was sliding apart while trying to eat it, making a frustrating mess of my lunch.

The second time I went the burger pattie was so paper-thin I felt like I was eating nothing but bread and onion...seriously, the inch-thick onion slice was bigger than the burger pattie itself; the bun had the fresh-taste of week-old bread, and my fries were overcooked and under-salted.

To make it worse, the service was lackluster both times! Maybe it's because I'm not a "regular" - maybe it's because I wasn't ordering half the menu like the girl in front of me - who knows?

The hamburgers don't blow me out of the water, the shakes are generic...and while you DO get a lot of the crinkle-cut french fries, they don't stock ranch - which is a necessity for my french fry enjoyment.

Plus they don't take cards - which always irks me because it hints of tax-evasion or something shady like that. No, I don't usually carry cash, nor do I want to have to run to the bank before going to grab food.

I live within walking distance, so I really wish I could nerve up and give it another try, but when you come to an establishment and feel like you're a nuisance to the staff, it's really not worth it - I'll drive to Telegraph and eat at the burger joint across from Chevron instead.

2.5 stars. This place is okay. I enjoy coming here for lunch, but have never actually left full and satisfied. I'm thinking I'll have to order 3 burgers next time. I love that they toast both sides of the bun, but it's not a very good bun. It falls apart like tissue paper, and the texture is lacking-- I may enjoy it with the applesauce and porridge I ate when I had my wisdom teeth taken out, but on a normal day, it's too soft for me.  It also absorbs all the grease from the meat like a sponge. Ordinarily I like this -- it saves me the trouble of having to lick the plate of all its greasy goodness later, but the bun can't handle the weight of all that juice and grease. The meat quality is mediocre -- thin, small patty with not enough fat in it.

I like the fries though -- they're good and crispy.

Been past this place a gazillion times...
Stopped by for a burger yesterday.
Ordered their 1/4 lb. hamburger.
Simple.
Warm bun.
Griddled, not grilled.
mayo/mustard.
shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onion, and pickles.
The burger in of itself was not particularly greasy, but the "burger grease" taste from years of flipping smashed cow on the griddle is what elevates this burgers' status.
A solid "hood" burger.
P.S.
$3.85
Can't go wrong.

I gotta say...
I wanted to love Ahn's, I really did. Around the corner from my house, burgers, shakes, all the fine things in life. And the burgers didn't taste half bad! Plus, they have veggie burgers, which my lady loves.
I still have to give it two stars, though, for two reasons. First: I shouldn't have to pay nearly twenty bucks for two (merely decent) burgers, two orders of fries, and two drinks. Thats insane. Second: I have gotten violently sick to my stomach every single time I've eaten their food. The first couple of times I thought must have been flukes, so I kept trying because the convenience of the place was just too much to ignore. The sick just kept happening. I used my scientific-detective mind to deduce that it was from the Ahn's burger. Heartbreaking!
I'm sorry Ahn's... I've given up.

Ahn's is not easy on the eyes, but it is great for your pocketbook & your taste buds.  full disclosure:  i have never had anything other than grilled cheese, veggie burger, fries and shakes from Ahn's.

we ALWAYS order the same thing because it always hits the spot.  my only complaint is that they used to have better veggie burger patties (key ingredient:  water chestnuts) and they now use a more Boca burger like patty which is OK, but not as good.

the prices cannot be beat.  the place feels like its a family run joint and at all times of the day it is always busy.

Ahn's Burger is a drive through place. They are fast into making your berger. Its delicious! Though, the counter reps should be fluent in English, just because its traditional American food. But what can you expect its the Bay Area, so diversified and its not a chain company.
You can call and order while you are on your way.  Its a cool place.
If you feel like having a Burger at home, I recommend this place to you.

Late at night and no place to go, so I decided to go jogging around Lake Merritt with a couple of friends. As we got around the Lake, we decided to try out this place. I've always passed by it but never tried it. We ordered through a window and placed an order for a couple of fries and burgers. The fries were bomb, though I didn't think the burgers were all that great just decent. After eating the feeling of guilt kicked in. Can't blame the location though.

I have traveled near, I have traveled far, all in my quest for the perfect burger.  Tonight I happened upon Ahn's, and I realized....

the perfect burger still eludes me.

First of all, I came here at 6:00 and there was only the walk-up window, which when it's dark does not feel like the safest place for a skinny white chick to be.  I managed to escape unscathed, and when I took my burger home, I found the following:

*Roughly a pound of fries.  To be honest, yes they had the right amount of crisp to potato pulp ratio, but being crinkle cut they seemed all too similar to store bought fries.  For the price, and lack of having to cook them myself, it was worth it.

*The burger was nothing special, but a step up from McDonald's.  It was nothing more than I could have made at home (kraft cheese, nothing special bun, run of the mill tomatoes/lettuce/mayo), but at least they asked me what I wanted on it.

It's possible I'll be back to give them a second try since others rave about them, but I wasn't impressed in the least little bit.

$4 does seem a bit exorbitant for a cheeseburger...even for ones as good as the ones here.

However, if the weather is nice, sometimes you just want to walk up, grab a burger, and eat it while sitting by the lake. Fortunately, this place is located near the side of the lake that is not blocked off for whatever the %$#@ they are doing to the Lakeshore side.

Oh yeah, it's also open early for those hungover folks who need grease and shakes for breakfast.

While I am not easily impressed by their lunch offerings, I can tell you I am absolutely impressed by their breakfast.  The sausage patties have some heft and I swear that this place has best hash browns ever.  Yes, the best hash browns ever.

It was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and not too starchy.

I would never expect such tasty breakfasts from a burger joint, especially a burger joint with a limited breakfast offering. They may not have a big breakfast menu, but what they do make is excellent.

I've started to write this review at least five times, but can never follow through.

Here's the thing about Ahn's: It's nothing special. It's not a place you go out of your way to eat at. The interior is pretty grungy, with one of the walls made up entirely of exposed cinder block.

At the same time, you can find me sitting at one of those grungy tables at least once a week.

The turkey burger is not bad - always filling and always pretty good. The fries are tasty and have just the right amount of resistance - no Mickey D's limp fries for me. The service is swift if not always endearing.

And it's two blocks from my home/office.

If you live or work in the neighborhood, you gotta give 'em four stars. Otherwise, three will do.

I'm currently in withdrawal from head meds (otherwise known as SSRIs, specifically known as Lexapro), which may provide context to this review.

I was walking near the lake trying to get rid of a headache, nausea, and a pressing need to throw myself into the fetid water, when the idea of burgers and fries came to the rescue.

Ah ... Ahn's.

I walked in to find sullen women fighting amongst themselves, slapping burgers on grills, and nearly throwing chairs in an attempt to clean the place up. Now this is a place to be when jugging sickness of the mind and body.

I chose the turkey burger and fries. It took a little convincing for the counter woman to give me tap water, but she finally flung some my way. I had a seat and watched the circus.

A woman in overalls came in. Of course she was talking to herself. Anybody who wears overalls and is over a certain age is crazier than a shithouse rat. This immediately made me feel better.

My food arrived. The fries were crinkly and crispy and delicious. The turkey burger kind of sucked. Can't have it all. I left Ahn's no crazier than I'd come in, which means it deserves at least three stars provided I don't fall ill with food poisoning.

Yet another place I shoulda tried years ago! Greastastic old school burger! Fast service! It's almost like seeing a show watching this family get down and fry up this food in that dingy little diner.

They got what you need though. Burgers, Dogs, Fries, Shakes... They were polite, too. I can't wait to go back for the steak sandwich and to try the breakfast. It was lunch time but their was room to sit at a table. And a few stools at the counter.

Good hangover food for certain.

Greasy?  - Yes. But it's a burger place. A greasy burger place with equally greasy fries.

Does it taste good? - Yes. Unless you have an aversion to grease- in which case, why are you even considering a burger?

Why can't I order sprouts on my burger? - Sweetie, this is not Barneys. Just pretend that the shredded lettuce bits are sprouts.

Are the people in the parking lot going to hurt me? - Probably not. But if they do, it will only last until their order is up :)

I'm a proactive chick so, I'm always sitting back searching around for mishaps to take place before they do. The movie 'The Secret' frowns on this type of behavior and that movie can bite me because I like to be prepared.

I walked in and the guy took my order but didn't write it down anywhere. He then walked away from the counter and did some other junk. When he came back, he took a moment to focus, asked again what I wanted, I repeated it & this time he wrote it down very quickly.
Right away, I knew my hamburger was fucked.. that they'd probably put pickles on it or worse, mustard.

They were pretty busy in here and they all seemed in sync in a chaotic manner.

When I saw a cheeseburger being assembled with grilled onions, I was hopeful it was my order so I could get the fuck out of this dingy hell hole of a burger joint. I hate the brown, ugly decor in here and the cracked pleather chairs depressed me.
When I saw her slap a handful of pickles on the burger, I was hoping it wasn't mine after all and that he had remembered I said 'no pickles'.
I watched the lil bag make its way down the line and he grabbed the one with the pickles, tossed a wad of fries and ketchup in the bag and turned to me.

Oh shit, it was my burger.
*Boo! Hiiisss*

It was hella busy at the time so I just took a deep breath and mentally prepped to take the nasty green monsters off as soon as possible & just get over it. After all, I only hate them, but I'm not allergic or anything.

It would have been the tastiest burger I've had in a long time if I couldn't taste that pickly aftertaste of their mistake lingering on my burger patty. I agree with Kiki's review about Ahn's 'giving In-N-Out a run for its money'. I even enjoyed the crispy crinkle fries a lot more than In-N-Out's wussy fries.

I'd definitely give it another chance and speak slower & more clear when I request no mother fucking pickles on my cheeseburger.

OK maybe that movie has a good point after all & I willed it to happen? So, technically my energy put the pickles on there, not the cook.
Nah, F that theory!
I'm just great at spotting mistakes before they occur, which is why dating no longer appeals to me either.
But, that's a whole other story.

I wandered in here with a few of my high school classmates in 99. The service is very warm especially towards the younger crowd who do not wander in as much. We ended up coming here at least once a week for the next two years. The burgers itself is not amazing and the environment is not all that but there's something about the service that kept us coming back.

This is right by lake merritt and for those who are jogging around the lake I do not recommend you to pass by here...for I got sucked in a few times and walked the remainder of the way after a fat meal.

PS: Pastrami burger is a must!

I have found my new "go-to" burger joint!  Ahn's is awesome.  Good cheeseburger, fries (crispy outside, tender inside), and chocolate shake.  This place may give In-N-Out a run for its money, as far as I am concerned.  And it's local!  I do enjoy supporting my local peeps.

Was that useful enough for ya?!  And I didn't even mention my vagina once!  Well, except for that previous sentence.

Driving along on Grand Ave, Ahn's Quarter Pound Burger is easy to dismiss. Set back a bit from Grand Ave with a fluorescent sign beckoning hungry travelers to come inside, at best it looks a little shady. There are no tell tale signs that inside lies food that will delight and satisfy for only $3.75! It took a conversation with Anna G. plus reading reviews on Yelp to finally get me to stop by one day as I was driving along Grand in search of lunch.

I parked my car in their small parking spot and walked inside. As soon as I walked inside, I was surprised and delighted at the 50's charm of this place. It was cute! The charm factor was further magnified by the sweet interactions of the regulars with the women who fry up your burger. The juxtaposition of a Vietnamese woman frying up my burger reminded me of why I love Oakland so much. Only in Oakland would you see a Vietnamese woman serving up such a classically American dish to people of all different ethnicities.

I had called in my order of a burger, well done and fries, earlier. I paid $6.20 and sat down for about five minutes while they were finishing up preparing my meal. I grabbed my food, thanked the woman and drove the ten minutes back to my apartment. First, the fries. The fries are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. They have a great potato taste. The women actually fry the fries right there so you know they are fresh. Onto the burger. The burger is akin to the In and Out Burger in that it is on the thin side. If you like your burger nice and thick like Barney's or Christopher's Burgers, you may want to look elsewhere. The patty was perfectly cooked and seasoned nicely. I loved all the different fixings, the onions, the mustard, mayo, pickles, lettuce and tomato were all great. Then there's the price. At $3.75 for a really good burger, you really can't go wrong.

All in all, definitely stop by Ahn's and give it a try. You can't afford not to.

I LOVE AHN's. I can't believe I haven't written a review until now. I have loved Ahn's for the last 12 years. They make great burgers. They have shakes in all the flavors (mmm...banana!). However, their fries are to die for. To DIE for. If you get them right away, they are so crispy and good and warm and...hold on, I need a moment. Make sure, if you get take-out and take the fries home not to close the bag up. The fries will steam and get soft instead of staying crispy. It's a delicate time so don't screw it up. Leave the bag open and eat a few of them on the way home, huffing and puffing because they are still too hot but they are too good to wait.

They are really nice and seem to remember me all the time (you don't want a banana shake this time? are you sure?). And, it's cheap.

There is nothing not to like about Ahn's. I've haven't eaten there in many years as I always get take-out, but I'm sure I'd like it if I were there too...if not, I wouldn't have gone back, right?

Very old school diner that I was at first afraid to go into because it looks so rundown from the outside and the crowd outside the place can sometimes look sketchy.  My burger was pretty good especially for the price (Cheeseburger $4.05), it had all of the essential condiments, but no fries.  Overall the burger satisfied my curiosity about the place, but I have no desire to come back.

I love Ahn's.  It is right next door to my job, so it is nice for a quick lunch, or an afternoon milkshake fix when I want to strangle someone.  It is charming, especially the lady that is always there.  She is kind of mean, but in a joking way.

Their burgers are a perfect cure to any hangover, or a great way to satiate serious hunger.  Beware of the onions!  They do not mess around.

They also have breakfast, which is average greasy spoon stuff, sausage, bacon, hash browns, and eggs.  It can be a little dangerous if my office gets hungry, because we will get breakfast from Ahn's and then all go into a food coma from the butter soaked toast, crispy hash browns, and sausage.

I went to Ahn's Burger today - my first time since I moved to my Lake Merritt 'hood back in July '06, even though it's less than two blocks from my apartment.  Maybe because I'm not much of a burger eater?  That's likely.  Perhaps because this place always seemed a bit too greasy/hole-in-the-wall for me, like a place that would leave me running to the bathroom for at least 12 hours after visiting?  That's even more likely.  But my fellow Yelpers gave it such great reviews that I had to partake.  I finally got dressed today at 2:00 p.m., donning my T-shirt with a dinosaur on it that says "all my friends are dead" (get it?? it's funny, huh? yeah!), and took a quick trip down the road.

As I was waiting for my order, an old man pulled up in his old truck, wearing an old baseball cap with a Purple Heart patch sewn on the brim.  He comments on my shirt, and says, "here, I might have one," - I presumed he meant a friend, since my shirt says that all my friends are dead.  He searches through his pockets, pulls out a plastic baggie with a stack of cards inside, and hands me one.

It's the size of a business card that states "This is a FREE Ticket" on top, with a green alien-monster guy in the corner that has two sets of eyes, exactly ten feet, cloven hands, glasses, and a mustache.  Stapled to the other side of the card is your standard red ticket, like the kind you'd get at a carnival raffle.  Underneath the ticket, the card reads: "It's Not Good for Anything - It's Just FREE."  I laugh heartily with this glorious old man and his free tickets, take my food, and head home.

Also, I'm in trouble, since this place has damn tasty greasy food, and it's just steps from my apartment - ay me.  How am I supposed to fit into my skinny jeans now??  At least I still have my free ticket.

Ahn's is The Diner That Time Forgot. This little family-run hole-in-the-wall by Lake Merritt looks exactly the same as I can only imagine it did in 1963. The old Korean guy at the grill appears as though he's been there almost as long. We wandered in a couple minutes before noon on Saturday, and found the breakfast crowd still sitting at the counter. The breakfast food looked tasty - I was impressed by how fluffy the pancakes appeared. Even the coffee cups look like they came from a bygone era.

The two of us each ordered a cheeseburger with no mayo (mine was a double), and we split an order of fries, a strawberry milkshake, and a cola. The fries were perfect - crispy on the outside, but soft and not overcooked on the inside. The shake was smooth and creamy (not icy and particulate, as milkshakes can sometimes be), and had just enough strawberry kick to be satisfying but not overwhelmingly sweet.

The burger - oh the burger! The burger is constructed on a bun slightly reminiscent of a Hawaiian roll: spongy and slightly sweet tasting with a golden sheen on top. The toppings, oddly enough, are placed on the bottom - layers of fresh toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, and an onion that was obviously just sliced. The patties were tastily seared on the outside, and cooked just through, so there was a little pinkness left in the middle. The only complaint I have about my double cheeseburger is that there was only one small slice of American cheese; other than that, my first Ahn's experience was a great one.

I will definitely be back, either to have breakfast with the morning diner crowd, or to grab a delicious lunch and go sit out by the lake. Maybe both!

What I like about Ahn's is it is of the few 1/4 Pound Burgers that serves a veggie burger.  And a mean veggie burger, to boot.  Not your standard Gardenburger from Costco pawned off as an original.  No, I've never had one that tastes like this.  It is an Asian-inspired patty, with big chunks of water chestnut in it.  Love their crinkly fries, too.

My drunk friends rave about an Ahn's breakfast after a bender.  I've never tried it but I trust it's a tasty...

An old-school, formica table topped diner, located right on Lake Merritt.  Best fries, hands down!  You know the fries are good when they are delicious cold.  Veggie burgers are also great, esp when paired with a giant basket of fries (my favorite food).  The staff is nice and the place is clean.

I cracked and needed a bacon cheeseburger fix so I thought I'd try Ahn's.  Normally, I'm all about the organic veggies, but I just like to indulge in a burger now and then.

The burger was pretty average for non-chain burger places.  Nothing to write home about, but I guess worth writing on Yelp about.

I did deeply appreciate the crinkle fries.  Why wouldn't you have crinkle fries if you can?  I like my fries like I like my ladies - with curves.  None of those straight skinny fries (or gals) for me.

A friend suggested this place and she always has great suggestions, so how could I say no? We pulled up and I admit, I was a little scared, this isn't exactly the kind of place I would drive by and think, wow, that looks like some place I would like to try, BUT, ordering through the window was kind of fun. For less than $20 I fed four adults, now how can you beat that? The burgers were really good. I got a cheeseburger with all of the fixings and it was a really good, greasy (in a good way) burger. The crinkle cut fries were fresh and yummy too. The best part is, they are all fat free, ok, now I am joking. But this place is really good, don't let the outward appearance fool you!!

Cash only. Next time, I will have to try a milk shake.

Juicy, cheesy, greasy, and easy! Even though I've gone to the dark side and am no longer a vegetarian, I will always order the veggie burger here. It's so delicious it makes me suspicious (hey that rhymes!) The regular burgers here are great too. My boyfriend never lets me share fries with him, but he always regrets it when we are faced with an overwhelming pile of sad leftovers that won't fit into our porky gullets. Somehow this place makes your eyes get bigger than your stomach.
Oh yeah, you can get Hawaiian Punch here too! Punchy!

Delicious.

Big fat burgers, big fat crinkle fries, delicious shakes.  I saw pastrami on the menu too for all those lovers.  They may breakfast but go for the burgers.

CASH ONLY - Affordable prices.  For about $8.00 you can get a double cheese, fries and shake.  Good thing too since you'll need to save your money for a gym membership if you make frequent visits.

Dude, it's Lake Merritt not a freak show. It is perfectly OK to stand out here with us Oakland denizens, in fact, when you sometimes don't hear them yell that your order is up, because you are in your car with the windows up, we Oakland denizens will politely flag you down.

Just kidding! Maybe! I'm a total Ahn's addict, though I've been weaning myself off of late. The fries are the perfect comfort food. And while you wait outside with the other Oakland denizens you can peruse the selection of newspapers.

Seeking escape from the fashionable elements of Oakland's Lake Merritt perimeter, I found refuge in Ahn's Quarter-pound Burger, looking for a slice of true "counter"-culture. I sat at the L-shaped wooden counter and observed the entirely unfashionable and comfortably multi-racial crowd that prefers MYOB to BYOB--couples having polite and restrained conversations and solitary gentlemen reading newspapers and scribbling in notebook--there's still a place for the People in downtown Oakland.

They serve a variety of affordable burgers, shakes and breakfast items. I was in and out quickly and was treated politely.

It's all about the crinkle cut fries. Mmmm!

I recently attempted to gorge myself on a veggie burger, fries, and a milkshake, and couldn't finish the fries, but they were the highlight of the meal regardless.

The milkshake was good, too, and they have all kinds of old-skool flavors (pineapple, anyone?) that are fun to try.

One downside is the price -- my meal cost about $10.50, which isn't exorbitant, but I think it should have been around $6.50.

It's half a block from my house, so I'm sure I'll be back.

My mom had to have a burger one day.  We stopped by Ahn's Quarter Pound Burgers and were mesmerized watching the lady make these burgers.
My mother reports that the burger was great!! Generous servings and great service.  Small place that offers take out too.
It is always hoppin'!!!

I don't eat red meat but I see many many happy customers coming out, with evidence of red meat enjoyment on their faces!
