We gave this place a couple of tries, but both times were disappointed. While my son finds the sushi here enjoyable, I couldn't get past the grey hamachi. There were still some silvery patches of skin on it, as well. I'm semi-picky about my fish, and this was completely unacceptable.
The roll I ended up with was doused in lemon juice, so much so that it left a puddle on the plate. I didn't recall ordering a lemon roll, but by the time I was done, I wasn't interested in peeking back at the menu and making sure.
Near the end of the meal, our server disappeared. After sitting and looking at each other for 10 minutes, I flagged down one of the sushi staff, and asked for the check. Despite having my wallet in my hand, and credit card out, the waitress handed me the bill, and immediately turned and fled back into the kitchen. Queue another five minute wait, and I finally went to stand by the register to give them a clue. The place was *not busy* at the time.
Summary: bad ingredients, bad tasting roll, and bad service. I'll drive the extra 4 miles to Nori from now on. -

It's alright. Kind of pricey, but I guess sushi is hard to come by in Alpine.

This is by far the best sushi place in Alpine! Their Las Vegas roll is very good! The staff is nice and the food is decently priced.

I've been to Ahi Sushi & Grill four times for a quick sushi run in Alpine but I honestly think that their food/sushi is extremely mediocre as compared to other locations. Their waitresses are extremely noobish and could use a lot of improvement before servicing their guests. Two out of the four times we've been here, I had to get up and get myself the small dishes for the soy sauce because our waitress failed to do so. Nonetheless, I like their sushi and service better than Panda Machi even though dinner could run to about $30-$40 for two. Their Thai Tea is great but I wish they'd invest in tapioca pearls which would make it even better!

The waitress was very helpful & friendly the night that I went in. I'd spent about $25 on take out Sushi and when I got home, I was very pleased with the meticulous work that was put in to make my sushi rolls not only look nicely decorated but also very delicious! Once again, Alpine isn't known well for great food but if you're a local, you'll know! I definitely know what's great. It's a nice place to come and eat, very cozy and welcoming!

After having gone a few more times, I have discovered certain items on the menu that I find quite delectable, among these are:
- Mongolian chicken (I know- not sushi, but very good!)
- Cherry blossom roll ( scallops, salmon, eel sauce and avocados?!! It doesn't get any better!)
- Caterpillar roll (pretty decent!)
- Rainbow roll (the fish is really fresh and the roll is well assembled)1 Previous Review: Show all »

I recently came to realize their is a shortage of sushi available in East County on a Sunday so was happy to find this place in Alpine and was hoping for a new go to place but ended up pretty disappointed and will not be going back.
Hubz and I had only two rolls and decided not to order more. We had a tuna roll off their special menu and it was just ok and a Snow White roll with White Fish that smelled and tasted a little fishy. We could tell the Flying Fish Roe were not that fresh because they didn't have the snapping pop texture we expect.
The rolls came out on the usual little trays but they didn't give us our own plates.
Didn't take our empty beer bottles from the tiny little table either so it was a cramped mess. The waitress was not friendly at all and the service was not good. There were only 2 of them and it was not very busy at all. On our way out, we also noticed that we didn't get the half off prices that were being advertised.
Good news is that it's now Monday and we didn't get sick. : ) -

Wow, surprisingly not good and continuously not good. I have taken my parents here three times and each time they just look at me with this look of "Why?" The last time was Mother's Day. I keep trying to think if it is the quality of the ingredients or the lack of solid recipes. We have had everything on the menu and none of us have ever left there going - "damn, was that good."
Sad really. I normally just get sushi or sashimi - the rice is bad, I think they use the wrong amount of rice vinegar or sugar in the rice, but it's not good. The fish slices have a lot of the membrane, if that's the proper word - especially in the tuna. My mother gets the soups, my father changes everytime between something hot and cold and my brother usually sweet and sour something - none of us ever like it.
I am wondering if the the people who give this place five stars have never had really good Japanese food or that they are friends - because this place just never hits a home run and we keep trying.
Depressing. -

Lots of people I know have raved about this place. We went for the first time tonight. Great sushi and very reasonable...in fact, I was wondering how good it would be since it was so inexpensive. With prices like those, I was expecting crappy quality like they bought the fish from someone out of an ice chest at the swap meet. Not at all what was served....Definitely a good deal.

What a great value! I have been here many times, most recently last night.
Four of us ate and drank to our hearts' content for $90, including tip.
What we had:
Several large Sopporos and some saki
Literally the largest raw oysters we've ever seen. Delicious! We had 10.
Garlic edamame. Spicy and yummy.
Wor wanton soup. Friends said just OK.
Sweet shrimp. Big and perfectly done.
Salmon nigiri. Always tasty.
Albacore special roll. I always get this.
California roll and Tuna X Tuna roll. Very good.
Service is friendly and food comes fairly quickly for sushi. Food always seems fresh.
Once they get some drinkable wine in here, they get the 5th star. -

I ordered take out Mongolian Beef and Kung Pao chicken and it was so disgusting and The servers are NOT friendly I will NEVER go there again.
Food quality is terrible the meat was not fresh, both dishes tasted like it had been laying around for days. The Kung Pao chicken was the worst I have eaten well actually after a few bites I tossed it in the trash. It had a probably a whole can of old soggy water chestnuts in it which are about 50 cents a can. The beef was very chewy with no taste not sure it was even beef that too went in the trash, what a waste of money and time.
I will stick to Panda Machi the food is fresher and servers are actually happy that you are there. Sometimes I wonder if servers realize they would not have a job if there was no customers. -

I have gone here a couple of times because my mother and sister asked me to try it. Honestly, WORST miso soup I have ever tasted. It was so oily and disgusting that I ended up sending it back. It's very interesting how many of the rolls seem exactly like another sushi restaurant that has been in Alpine for years.
I had the salmon and tuna nigiri; both were not up to par. The fish was separating, like it was old, and tasted a bit off. Needless to say, I didn't finish it.
I tried one of the rolls (for the life of me I can't remember the name) but it had fried rice, which was way overcooked. I felt like I was chewing on rocks the whole time.
I definitely won't be going back there any time soon and won't ever recommend this restaurant to friends. -

Wow, this place is bad. I don't think the people running the place are Japanese, but it still makes me want to punch Japanese people in the mouth just for giving them the idea to open a Sushi Bar/restaurant.
This may sound harsh, but you will understand if you look at my list here and take my Japanese blood into consideration.
http://www.yelp.com/li...
Since I don't eat sushi as a form of cultural protest against the Japanese, I cannot comment on the quality of the sushi, pretty much all of it makes me want to abuse snow monkeys. All I can do for you here is give you some idea of the quality and authenticity of the food served here, as well as the service.
Service- Bad... We were seated on the enclosed patio, and had a tv next to us playing some lame mafia movie or something. Our waitress, kept forgetting the tea, and had to be reminded 4 times that we had ordered it. The tea didn't come till the middle of the meal, and by that time the mood had passed.
Authenticity- Didn't see any, still wondering about that.
Food- Bad, I ordered Teriyaki beef, and it was so saturated with a thick overly salty sauce that it tasted like a beef jerky experiment gone wrong on one of those home food dehydrators. The tempura was decent, but the tempura sauce tasted like a watered down version of their Teriyaki.
Authenticity of the food- Reminded me of something you buy in the frozen food section of Albertsons, or a Jack in the Box Teriyaki Bowl. Not in any way, shape, or form authentic.
Like I said, I don't think these people are even Japanese, but even so, I have had better Japanese food cooked by French line cooks. The only thing I can say about the place is that the prices were fair compared to some of the other Sushi joints out there. -

Well, they did it AGAIN. So good, can't believe the bill when it comes because it is abpout $25 less than what you expected it to be and great service from our favorite sushi chef who never disapoints, Simon-san. We are huge fresh salmon fans however very picky and Ahi has consistently produced super fresh salmon sushi. Simon hooked us up (not litteraly) with some great fresh catches of the day topped off with his super duper delicious ponzu sauce and other yummy toppings and finished everything off for us with the Volcano Roll. What is in the Volcano Roll you ask? Well, let me tell you, perfectly seasoned spicy crab, cilantro, jalapeno, yellowtail on top AND THEN, wait for it....baked to perfection and served with a flaming Volcano on your plate! From now on, the Volcano roll is my dessert of choice. Who needs cheesecake when you have a Volcano Roll right?

We love this place. The spicy tuna hand roll is the best we've had and it's something we try everytime we go to sushi restaurants. Ahi is really the best around and the prices are unbeatable. You have to be reasonable your not downtown and your not spending hundreds like you would at top sushi restaurants. For the price and location it's excellent. The service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. I recommend it to many people and I always hear good things. We love have gone many times and have never been let down. Definitely try it.

I have only tried the take-out sushi here, but my co-workers have had many other dishes, and we are all very happy with the food here.
This restaurant features a wide selection of sushi, as well as some standard Japanese and Chinese dishes (like teriyaki chicken, kung pao chicken, beef with broccoli, noodles, fried rice, etc.). This place is much better than Panda Machi (the only other Asian restaurant in town), and generally cheaper, so there's not much comparison.
Ahi Sushi & Grill is a welcome addition to the gastronomic blight that is Alpine "cuisine." I don't have anything against Mexican food, but do we really need 10 Mexican restaurants in a town this size? -

I only ate here once, and I was not impressed. the sushi was not so good and expensive for the quality. I just think there is better sushi out there and definitely better for the price, but who knows maybe Ill give it another shot. Maybe?

I had lunch there today and was VERY pleased. Miso soup at $1.95 had LOTS of tofu and seawed. Good value. Ha a vegie sushi roll and it was very taste. My wife had three salads and they were all very good. Very nice dressings. A bais, clean, nice chinese/japanese eatery. Nice vegan dishes too!

Simon, one of the greatest sushi chefs of Panda Machi, moved just up the hill to open Ahi Sushi. The food here's great, service and the service is friendly... I have, unfortunately, discovered that the food quality can be a bit inconsistant however.

As someone who hates sushi, but is married to someone who loves it, the food was pretty good. I got cashew chicken which was alright, but the egg drop soup was really stinkin good, and the cream cheese wontons along with the potsticks are a must have...my husband went out of his box and tried the crunchy roll, and the burner. According to him, it was AMAZINGLY GOOD. Definitely a recommended place!!

This place has very cheap sushi prices. I have been there a handful of times and the food is very inconsistent for me. They are definitely better at sushi than the other dishes. Today we had some of the WORST Kung pao and teriyaki chicken! Rice was like hard stale Uncle Bens, I am Asian and I happen to believe that getting rice right should be STEP ONE in owning an Asian restaurant. C'mon... It's just a freak'n rice cooker, learn how to use it. Come here just for basic sushi and glamor rolls, especially if you have a lot of kids. If you are entertaining guests don't roll the dice by coming here. I recommend Okawa in Santee for consistently great Japanese.

2 months in and I think they are doing a fabulous job.
Tonight 4 of us ate a whole lot of sushi, drank 3 large beers, then enjoyed this cheesecake dessert and it was only $65! Wow.
The staff is great. Our server was Krista and she was very friendly and attentive. Then out of the blue an order of srumptious spring rolls were brought to our table complimentary......nice surprise.
Believe it or not we plan to return tomorrow evening with a group of 6.
We love our sushi! -

Alpine, CA
I gave this Sushi place a three star rating for effort, but overall for my first experience - more like a 2 1/2 star. We went on opening night and it was a little uncoordinated and hectic. They offered half-price sushi and rolls and extended that offer to to-go orders. The result was people sitting at the sushi bar and tables waiting for their orders while the chefs sent out to-go orders left and right. My suggestion would be to have one dedicated chef for to-go orders. We sat at the bar for an hour (literally) before we got served one piece of sushi. We almost left because we were running late for a concert.
Flip side is that the fish was fresh and they served up generous portions. The rolls were not as good as my favorite sushi place (Tabu) and they did not put any wasabi under any of the fish, but this place is pretty good if you do not feel like going all the way into Rancho. It is WAY better than the sushi bar in Viejas.
I will go again in a couple of weeks because I think it will be a lot better after a few weeks of operation is underway. I will surely update my rating as well. -

omg! we have found heaven! this place is FANTASTIC! full sushi bar, beautifully decirated ( a little dark inside, but it adds to the effect). Indoor and outdoor dining available. So far all we have tried is the sushi, and my goodness, it is the best ever! The Fire of Love roll is phenomenal! even the caterpillar roll is noticably better than anywhere else we have been! And the prices, are unbeatable! 4 rolls of sushi and 2 teriyaki bowls only cost me $18

This place is super good. And the prices are fantastic. Get the Vegas roll when you go there and you will not be disappointed. Also, for the non-sushi lovers, they have great chinese food and apps. This is a great addition to Alpine for sure. Cheers.

Review from Blake B.
El Cajon, CA
Started going here when they first opened and the food was great and service was great. Last night was the first time I've been back for about 6 months. It was somewhat of a busy night, it wasn't packed but a good crowd. We got seated right away but took about 30 minutes for our waitress to finally come take our drink order. We might have just gone on an off-night but it was hard to tell. The food was no where near as good as when it was when it opened. The service was ok, our waitress was nice but forgot half our order. We ordered an appetizer and didn't get our appetizer until halfway through our meal, kind of defeats the purpose of an appetizer if you ask me. I understand that when you order sushi, it doesn't all come out at once if you order a few rolls, but the timing with bringing out our food last night was just ridiculous. I may have to give it one more shot, but I still haven't decided.
