OMG, the Cuban Sandwich Monster has met his match.
This place is going into my Tampa Things to Do list. Its small, uber casual, it is packed at all hours (for good reason) but it is one of the best places to get an authentic Cuban sandwich in Tampa.
Many places advertise "Cuban" sandwiches. They may have the essential ingredients, but everyone puts their spin on it. Among the best in my opinion are Champions Sports Bar at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel (yes, Champions. The chef is Cuban and knows his stuff), the Columbia Cafe next to Channelside, and Aguila. The owner is super friendly and works the tables. I love eating at small places where the owner takes such pride in his work.
I should rephrase. I've never eaten AT this restaurant as every time I go its so packed there is nowhere to sit. So I take my sandwich to go. This would bother some people. Me, if the place is always so packed, they must be doing something right. This is as good as it gets!Listed in: Best Cuban Sandwich in Tampa…, Tampa Things To Do

Why 4 stars? Because they have an awesome Cuban Sandwich.

We went to Aguila because we saw it on the Man vs. Food on The Food Network. It was quite deceiving on the show because they made it appear to be located in Ybor City. It's definitely not in Ybor, but it's still a great place to grab a Cuban.
I wouldn't say it's the best Cuban I've ever had, but it's probably top 3. I believe the owner was our server and he was walking around talking to everyone. He was extremely friendly and helpful when it came to describing the Cuban cuisine. Their episode of Man vs. Food had just aired a day or two before, so the place was hoppin!
I tried a Malta per the advice of my Cuban friend. I will not fault Augila for this one, but that drink was disgusting. No thanks to that ever again.
I will definitely go back to Aguila and you should too. -

Very good cuban but not heads above any others. I also don't think they put enough mustard on it but thats me. I also asked for rice and beans and they gave me a to go box of white rice and a box of black beans. I don't think I have ever seen white rice at a cuban place. Still very good

A co-worker took me here one day for lunch. I was a little nervous because I don't eat meat. The Aguila family is very welcoming and will do whatever to please their customers, most of whom appeared to be regulars. I ended up ordering plantains and a vegetarian cuban sandwich, which was the best sandwich I've had in the Tampa Bay Area. So huge, and dirt cheap. Small town atmosphere in the middle of the city.

I just had lunch at Aguila and let me tell you something. Being from Atlanta where we used to have one of the best places for cuban sandwiches (Kool Korner) finding a half decent one is a hard to do these days.
The cuban sandwich at Aguila was top rate. Very tasty and given the scarcity of a good sandwich it's worth the other hassles that one reviewer spoke about. And who can complain about the price? They're cheap!!
Yes the service was extremely slow and not very attentive, but the atmosphere of this place with all the families and friends who knew each other. It's nice.
Next time I come to Tampa I'm going back for another cuban sandwich. -

best cubans in town hands down. Just so you all know, when we regulars see you newbies come here and get your feathers all ruffled up for it being a little slow, we laugh at you. There are a lot of you now since Man v Food. Check your attitude, shut up and be patient. Mario will take care of you.
want a real treat? try a Choripan. Chorizo onions and mustard on pressed cuban bread. Fantastic! -

Our annual trek to St Pete/Tampa now includes a mandatory visit to Aguilas. The energetic owner is still there keeping the patrons smiling. The cuban sandwiches and empanadas (beef) are the best. The espresso and cafe con leche also excellent. We had to wait a few minutes to get a table as early as 11:15 AM, because this place is VERY popular with the locales. We can't figure out the one star review. He must have had a bad day.
We left hearing, "Have a sexy Sunday." What could be better.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This places service is an utter joke. Waiting 30+ minutes for a simple to go sandwich ? F+++ and cant comment on food since they don't like to serve it.
You have to be kidding about the service other Yelp reviewer. La Teresita at least serves food.
