Okay, so it's not in the ritziest neighborhood in southern California.  So be it.  Go ahead and risk it and come for lunch... you won't regret it.

Agrusa's is probably my favorite sandwich joint south of Los Angeles.

Their portions are enormous.  Their ingredients are very fresh.  And it's a family owned and operated place that takes service seriously.   To be honest it almost doesn't matter what meat you order on your sammy, the bread is sooo good that it makes everything taste amazing.

This place is a fantastic little sub shop. Their Italian meats are primo, the bread is delicious, and the price is right. Get the "Original." You wont be disappointed.

Only complaint: peppercorns in the Mortadella are a bit much for my taste. Not everyone feels the negative way about pepper as I do.

so my boyfriend grew up on agrusa's. he told me he would be bribed to be good with the original sandwich. i mean, having a 5 year old that devoted to these sandwiches is a pretty huge deal.

so, i finally after years of visiting escondido was able to be there when agrusa's was open! i ordered an original as well. the sandwich is HUGE! a half sandwich is more than enough. my sister and i even split our half sandwich. the sandwich has a slew of meats and is all toasted after so the cheese is melting into the delicious fresh bread. it's rather cheap too. 6 bucks for a half sandwich filled with prime products!

Don't let the location fool you. Agrusa's is legit! I got the "Original" with all the trimmings and it was on point! I will continue to come here when the hankerin' for a hot Italian sub strikes me. I'd recommend calling ahead if you're going to grab one for lunch because they were doing a brisk business with the noon lunch crowd. There're also no tables so you're getting it to go! I'll still go to Hungry Bear when I want a Rueben, but I think Agrusa's just earned a spot in regular rotation!

Just proves that atmosphere doesn't make your food taste any better.  If you have crappy food and a groovy restaurant, you are still eating crappy food.

Only Agrusas is worthy of my very first review with Yelp. Agrusas has the most, amazing, addictive, best tasting sandwhiches on the planet and possibly, in the entire Universe.

When I was a kid growing up, i would see cartoons, where the highlighted charector becomes so hungry, his mouth would drool with saliva and a tender morsal of a meal he was looking......In all of my life, there is only ONE place that can do that physically to me, and thats Agrusas!!!!!!!!!

I love this place, i truelly do.

I have to add my voice to the chorus of those who love this sandwich shop! The Original sub is just the tastiest damn sandwich I've found, but all of the others are tasty, as well. I've brought my Hubby to try out the sandwiches, and now, he's hooked as well. I'll be going back again and again. I have even tried picking some up to take to work the next day, but, somehow, they "mysteriously" disappear before the morning comes.

Agrusa's is like a large womb in which delicious sandwiches are gestated.  I have only tried one sandwich from this sandwichery, and I don't need to look any further.  Filling my mouth with one of Agrusa's' turkey-filled dreams will make any day a good one, even if said day began with watching Dora the Explorer or cleaning dog vomit off of the rug in the dining room.

The one bad experience I had with Agrusa's was when I drove ALL THE FREAKING WAY OVER THERE with visions of delicious sandwiches dancing in my head.  I arrived, salivating with anticipation, to find that THE DOOR WAS LOCKED!?  NOOOO!!

Guess what.  They are closed on Sundays.

This little gem rocks.  Their sandwiches are best all beat all, hands down.  However there is a place in San Diego that I would say is just as good.  Gus Subs and Pizza on Rosecrans is top of it's class as well.

The only problem with Agrusa's Super Sandwiches is there is no seating in or out.  This is takeout only.  But I'm not knocking the no seating thing as this all about the food.

If your up for a supper sandwich when in SD give Gus a try.

I'll give it another try next time...

    1.  I must have ordered the wrong subs or came the day when the best sub maker was on vacay,  but mine and my man's subs were eh.  Not horrible but not the 5 stars all the other reviewers experienced :-(

    2.  The bread was nice and crisp, I'll give it that.  But my roast beef that was recommended was kind of bland and had a weird taste.  I can't explain it but it gave me the "um this tastes interesting" face.   My man got this meatball sub and the meat/sauce was flavorless too.  Did they run out of seasonings that day?

    3.  Maybe I'll try the Italian or pastrami sub next time since everyone else seems to rave about it.   But I"ll make sure to bring a seasoning kit and heck I'll bring my sriracha sauce too.

Let me begin by getting straight to the point: if you love toasted italian subs, you will find this place amazing.

The location reminds me of Mexico, and dining-in is likely not a comfortable option (as they have no tables to dine on, besides the unplugged old-school pacman table arcade).  The place is really designed for take out like most Yelp reviewers claim.

So what about the Italian Subs?  You will not be disappointed.  The owner recommended that I get the 8" Agrusas Original Sub, and it was really amazing.  Once we got our sandwiches, the smell really enticed us to eat right away.  I had to resist waiting to get home just to eat it!

The bread was perfectly toasted and had that crispy "pressed" feel to it.  The meat-to-bread ratio was enough to absorb all the flavors of the sub!  For a little over $5, this was really worth it!

It may be a little out of the way for some people, but it's worth giving a shot if you wanted to grab lunch on the go.

You know it is a good place when the order/waiting area is smaller than the kitchen area.

This place is teeny tiny, but it has all you need when you want a tasty sandwich to go.  There is a list of about 20 sandwiches on the wall.  The have some interesting combos, like turkey with BBQ sauce or brown gravy.  If you are going for the standard Italian sub, it comes with the "toppings," which are onions, pepperoncinis, pickles, lettuce and tomato.  That's it...no mayo, no mustard.  The subs are made hot, so if you want it cold, be sure to ask for it specifically made that way.

The french roll is fantastic...crusty where it needs to be, soft and gooey in all the other parts.  The sandwich sizes are 8" and 16".  They also offer a couple of salads (yes, the kind with lettuce and yes, the kind that is mayonnaise based) and even spaghetti.  But go for the sandwiches, people!!

Hole in the wall!  Much like a Mx food place, but only sandwiches!! It smells so good when you open their house style screen door.  Just a front counter and a table top video game are there, and you can see the ovens right there behind register, filling up with delicious eats.
Simple menu, with tons of flavor in each sandwich.
Here's the lowdown:  They use numbers for their grinders, but I never use them to order.  I get the Au Jus which is just their brown gravy and beef.  I can't tell you why (Eagles), but it is soooo yummz.  Just make the trip sometime if you can.  Escondido is really not that far from the 8 fwy...
It would be a nice trip on a fixie. :(

Ps- call the order in ahead during lunch.

This little hole in the wall sandwich shop knows how to make toasty, amazing subs. We tried the roast beef, and turkey both were great. The original looked awesome too. We don't live near here, but when in the area I will stop by even if I'm not hungry to grab one for later. Its that good.

Para bailar la bomba se necesita una poca de gracia - is what I sang when I bit into the Original Sub.  Italian cold cuts on a toasted hero bun.  Que delicioso, or shall I say molto bene?

This was a recommendation from a local and I was not led astray.  They have just the right amount of toppings; that is, they keep a really good veggie:meat ratio.  The bread is great too, and I'm a bread snob.

With chips and a drink it only set me back $7 and some change.  I would totally send someone here for a sandwich craving.  If you're in the area, check 'em out.  Tell them Papawow sent you.  No, don't do that.  That would be silly.

Long time sign viewer, first time eater.

The place is small to say to least, it's basically a takeaway business. The sandwiches are toasted here but can always be requested cold. As for the sandwich the meat could be considered "thin" compared to other sandwich places. The trade off is that the price is right. For 5 something you get an 8 inch sub that works perfectly for lunch.

    - Roast Beef is a winner here (#14 I think?). It's a great combination of flavors, and toasting it only enhances the experience.
    - Avoid the #22. Agrusa's has great subs, but the Italian meats tasted funny.
    - If you've had the subs at Smoke House Grills they taste very similar, only Agrusa's is a few bucks cheaper.

So, I usually I actually tried this play because it had such good feedback on here.

First off this place is in a ghetto area and looks super beat. Just like everyone says its small and basically a togo place only. This place is definaately a hole in the wall.

Give that. I came in at 11 right when they opened and there were already 4 poeple ahead of me. I thought this meant this place was going to be super good.

I ordered Agrusa's Special as recomended by many on here as their best. The best thing about this place is that the bread is perfectly toasted and really makes the sandwich. The ingrediants are so so. The sandwich is pretty hearty and I was full, but it didn't blow me away like these 5 stars say it should. There wasnt alot of vegetables in it, just alot of meat. I was full for under 6 dollars.

So This place didn't blow me away, but it wasn't bad. It was just okay. I probably wouldn't go here again and wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends, but they aren't bad. I think this place comes down to preference. They are just a sandwich shop, I would of just been as happy at subway.

Don't be fooled by the area. It may seem ghetto and ugly because of the cheap gas station in front of them "do not use at all". Agrusa's has the best deli sandwiches you will ever have in SD or Cali at all. The portions are huge and they are generous when it comes to adding meat. It's a family owned and run business and they treat you like family. Isn't that how it's supposed to be if you want loyal customers anyways? They are simply the best and if your ever thinking about a decent yummy delish sandwich this is the place.... Order ahead and pick up then enjoy!

I just finished my 8" turkey with cheese and I could really use a nap but instead I am yelping about it while at work.
Simple place, simple menu.  I went ahead and ordered "the deal" with turkey sandwich.  My husband is on a mad hunt to find a good sandwich shop and I can't wait to bring him here.
They toast automatically so if you're not a fan be sure to ask for no toasting.  I'm usually not a fan but in wanting to go with an authentic sandwich from them I went along and it was delicious.  Not too toasted.
No seating inside, and as another yelper has said don't go to the park nearby.  (Washington Park Esco folks, you know what I'm talking about)  I sat in my car and read my book.
Oh, for debit or cc users orders under $10.00 have a transaction fee.
Oh, you can call your order in ahead.

Still can't believe I ate the whole thing.

Agrusa's Super Sandwiches is the epitome of an excellent oven baked sandwich. All the meat is cut deli-style in-house and cooked to your order in a pizza oven. The number 22 (Agrusa's Special) is one of the best items on the menu, the Roast Beef Au Jus and the Meatball sub are also phenomenal.  The owners are brother and sister, and although I have only been to Debbies shop in San Marcos, I feel it is safe to assume they are both excellent.

My opinion may be a bit biased, as I did work here for a year after high school.

Just wanted to chime in a bit and update my past review....Over the past bit I have  FINALLY branched out and tried a few other choices here and Agrusa's did not disappoint!
The Italian Sausage was outstanding..Very simple with just sauce, melted cheese and sausage...The bread complimented it well!
But the Roast Beef, Pepporchinis and onions was a real surprise!...The only thing I added was cheese. This combo went together great! I think I may have a new favorite!
Goes to show that great ingredients really make the difference, especially when you have only three of them heading out in a 16in long bag!

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. My mom used to walk here when she was pregnant with me so I blame my addiction on her! I live in Vegas now and everytime I'm in town visiting my mom, Argrusas is one of the first places I go. I crave them while in Vegas and have yet to find a sub place here that is up to par. I was just there last weekend with a friend from Vegas and made her try it, she now understands my addiction and won't stop talking about it. I ALWAYS get the Super Sub with everything (which in it's self says a lot cause because I strongly dislike onions but will eat them on this only) and a side of pasta salad, I'm salvating just typing this. Open a chain in Vegas!!!!!!!

I've never even thought of trying anything else. Get their special sub with everything and you'll keep coming back over and over again. If they still do the stamp cards do yourself a favor and grab one on your first visit.

This was the first time visiting Agrusa's after reading reviews on Yelp. I figured I would try it out. The gentlemen working behind the counter recommended the #22 which is what "Agrusa's is famous for".

It wasn't a bad sandwich, it was just a bit plain. I think if they added something to it to give it more flavor it would be great. Maybe Dijon mustard? I dunno, it just needed something. Although it was perfectly toasted and the price was a deal for the size of the sandwich.

My dad grew up in Escondido, but we live in Orange County now, although we still have family in the area.  So one day, we're down in SD visiting my grandma and my dad tells me about this sandwich place that he used to go to all the time.  Apparently he went to High School with the daughter of the original owner and the sandwiches are awesome and I'll love them.   So he takes me down to this hole in the wall, kind of shady-looking place and tells me that we're having lunch here.

I ordered the Original Agrusa's sandwich and my life has never been the same.

I dream about this sandwich.  I frequently seriously consider driving the hour it would take to get there just so I can have this sandwich.  I have looked all over north Orange County for a sandwich that compares to this one.  I can't do it.

From the perfectly baked bread, to the bite of the dressing, to the saltiness of the meats and the creaminess of the cheese, it is sheer perfection.

If they had an Agrusa's up here, I would eat there every day.  Is it wrong to want to move because of a sandwich?

OK so this Agrusas location is the original and its been around for so long that when my mom was in beauty college her and my dad (who would meet her for lunch) ate there almost everyday. If it hadn't been for them finding this hidden gem I wouldn't of been blessed with the #22.

You know how many small businesses open up various locations and one location isn't the same as the other well this isn't the case with Agrusas. When they had an Oceanside location it was just the same as walking into the Escondido location and now that they have the San Marcos location everything still tastes the same. It is the only eatery Ive where Ive been to all locations and the quality and taste has never changed, that's why I love Agrusas Sub Sandwiches!! This location is for take out only but you know what as long as you can pop a squat somewhere and eat it wont matter how uncomfortable you are the great taste of the sub will wash that all away. This is definitely my #1 choice for sandwiches!!

Hole in the wall, but has some good subs. I was really impressed with how my sub was made. The cook toasted my bread in the oven,  I ordered the sub with cheese, so the cheese was nicely melted on one side, and on the other side a nice layer of butter.
When I opened up the sandwich and took my first bite I was it was great. The sandwich was toasty, with a nice crispiness, yet chewy.  I've only had bread this toasty when I eat tortas at the Tijuana border. You have to give another star for still being in business and being able to compete with the corporate owned sub sandwich chains.

Back in the day, there used to be an Agrusa's on Hill Street in Oceanside.  My dad would buy us sandwiches there on special occasions.  For a long time now the location has been Escondido but the sandwiches are still just as I remember.  Awesome.  It is all about the Original Super Sub. (I order mine with no onions...)  This is by far the tastiest sub I have ever had.  Nothing compares to the fresh crisp-on-the-outside-chewy-on-the-inside bread hot out of the pizza oven.  The peppercinis are the key I think..  The sandwich is spicy and delicious.  Don't even think about ordering a 1/2 size.  Get the full.  In fact, get 2.  They taste just as good cold out of the fridge the next day.   Agrusa's is always a special treat and well worth the drive from anywhere in the county.

Another Gem thanks to Yelp and so glad we went! My husband and I shared the Agrusas 16" sub and it was absolutely delicious.  My daughter ordered the tuna sub. When we got home she said it was  "good" and put the other half in the refrigerator.  After a couple hours she ate the other half and said it was one of the best tuna sandwiches she'd ever had, we attributed the different reaction later to the tuna sandwich was because she had refrigerated it. So I guess it just depends on the temperature of the tuna. We will definitely be going back and never frequenting a Subway/Quiznos again.
