    ASTORIA, NY

    4.0 star rating
    5/24/2012

    Four and a half stars for food, one star for service.   A bump due to the fact that you can sit with your dog on the side tables on 19th Street.

    The staff is rude over the phone, and they are grumpy in person.  A woman - who must be the infamous owner referenced in these reviews so many times - snapped at me for wanting to keep a menu in case our group were to order more food later.  We decided to share several appetizers, and we indeed did order more later, but the place wasn't so packed that there was a shortage of menus.  She literally grabbed the menu out of my hands.  Weird

    The highlights amongst the appetizers we tried:
    Zucchini Croquets - fantastic
    Cod Croquets - equally fantastic
    Greek sausage with leeks - very tender- not greasy at all. delicious
    Cheese pie - amazing crust.  very good

    Better than average:
    Traditional Salad of romaine, scallions and dill.
    Tyrolafteri- spicy cheese dip.  Tasty.  I would have liked it a bit spicier.
    Moussaka - very light- which is hard to do with this dish

    These apps were ok- not really better nor worse than what you'll find at most Greek restaurants in Astoria:
    Grilled Octopus
    Saganaki
    Lima Beans

    There were other apps that we tried.  Overall, the food was really tasty.

    Best Greek food we've had since visiting Greece 15 years ago! No gyros here! Lovely menu, great outdoor seating, tasteful and authentic inside! Great retsina, reasonably priced, delicious bacalao (cod) fritters w/ skordalia, fresh Greek salad and super authentic yummy fava spread. Can't wait to go back and try more!

    Everything we had was delicious, and only a slight glitch in the service. New waiter, we went at an off time, they forgot one thing we ordered, nothing horrible.

    They didn't bring any butter or olive oil with the bread, nor refilled the water, but other than that were SUPER friendly and it's right on the park to walk off the calories afterwards!

    New favorite place!

    Agnanti's forte is its ambiance. This little Greek restaurant with black and white photographs on the walls of  famous Greek actors, the  canvas canopy covered ceiling, the working pot belly stove in the back, the live miniature olive trees, the exposed bricks, the  old hanging  pots and kettles and the overall rustic feel, gives  you the impression that you're no longer in Queens, but rather in one of the Greek isles.  Although it is very small, it is serviced by many waiters and I marvel at how they quickly maneuver with trays up in the air through the tight aisle and  crowded tables of  cheek to cheek guests.

    The food is very good. They always have a catch of the day. Minimally processed, the fish is  baked and prepared [drenched] in Greek olive oil. They give you a side with it. I always order the delicious olive oil drenched dandelion salad. It's the kind of food that you come away  from feeling satisfied. What's healthier than Greek  virgin olive oil and baked fish? Of course, there are other dishes that you can try. They have a host of appetizers and salads. I've tried the octopus that I didn't like that much, but the shrimp entree is delicious [although they could should you more shrimp].

    At the end, they always give you a dessert that is on the house. It ranges from water melon slices to thick Greek yogurt with small pieces of a delicious Greek cake.  It's a wonderful way to finish the meal.

    The restaurant lies on the corner of Astoria Park. If you like to go for a walk after a big meal, the park offers a beautiful view of Manhattan just across the river that runs along the park.  It's an incidental touch to end the day after a wonderful meal.

    Nice outdoor seating, charming waiter, but hands down the worst greek food in astoria.  Grilled octopus like rubber (it must have been grilled, then frozen and then thawed--I don't know how else it could have ended up stringy.  gross).  Flavorless saganaki -- unless salt is a flavor.  Decent house wine and great outdoor seating did not make up for it.  Stay away.

    Nice little Greek restaurant with character.  The space is small and the seating is tight.  You are really cheek by jowl with adjoining tables.  I was dismayed to see that there was a video screen when I entered the restaurant.  As it turned out, a few episodes of the Three Stooges were being shown, which really cracked me up.

    The waitress was lovely and very down to earth.  We had a nice inexpensive bottle of Santorini white wine.  Fried calamari was excellent, as was the melitzanosalata.  The Greek salad wasn't that good, to my surprise.   The main dishes were very good.  We had shrimp in a delectable gravy that was awesome over rice.  My buddy had "pink porgy" that was very good and prepared perfectly.  Fussy fish eaters should be aware that they don't fillet the fish here.

    We were served a cute complimentary dessert.  Overall, we like this authentic Greek restaurant.  I wouldn't complain if it was roomier and it can be really crowded with long waits during peak times, but I still like it.

    I was a bit cranky when I came to Agnanti.  They were a half hour late with our reservation, and i think that without the gentle  prompting of some of my party, we could have been kept waiting.  Once we got seated, everything changed.

    Agnanti is one of the better Greek restaurants I have ever eaten in.  I even liked the things that I don't usually like.  And because I was here with a crowd, I was able to try many of the items on the menu.  Most of this list is obvious, but its still reassuring to know that what your getting is worth it.

    For starters, the grilled squid is a must do, followed by the grilled octopus.  The fried calamari is good, but not as good as the grilled.  All of the various "gooey Greek things"(tzatziki, etc.) are excellent.  The vegetables are great, and the order is large enough to keep the vegetarians happy.

    We were so stuffed after the starters that we had problems finishing the main courses: plan appropriately!  General advice would be to have the potatoes as a side, although the fries were quite good too.  Chicken souvlaki was surprisingly good.  Sausages were liked by those who like them.  The lamb chops and grilled shrimp were also good.  And, again for the vegetarians, the Fasiola Plaki.

    Have some patience when you go, call ahead anyway so you have a chance, and enjoy!

    Went there last night, and I must say I liked it! I ordered the chicken souvlaki ($12) and my cousin had the t-bone steak ($22 I think?)..both were yummy and of course a Mythos beer does wonders :))

    I like the ambiance as well, very cozy and cute. I feel like I'm back home (The Mediterranean). You get a dessert on the house, Greek yogurt with compote cherries and 2 mini slices of walnut cake, with honey and cinnamon...again yummy!

    Great, cute place to grab some good Greek food, and please note it's not a 5 star fine dining place so calm your expectations, rather  just go for it and enjoy!

    Just an all around lovely Greek restaurant. The only down side is the tables are so close together, it feels a bit crowded even if the restaurant is not full. I'm learning that this seems to be common in NYC though.

    Five stars for the awesome food and service for sure! We ordered the shrimp kataifi aka shredded filo wrapped shrimp in some sort of glorious honey-mustard tasting sauce (I'm sure I'm not giving the sauce the justice that it deserves in this description). The shrimp basically made my head explode from the overwhelming deliciousness. The spicy cheese spread was my second favorite thing. It doesn't feel heavy the way saganaki does plus it's pretty spicy, which I'm very much a fan of.  The chicken souvlaki is good, not the best I've had but very good. Definitely get the lemon potatoes with the chicken. The meal ended with a complimentary walnut cake dessert. Light honey-sweetened cake. Very delicious and it tastes even better because it's complimentary.

    Great greek food. Must eat.
    Grilled octopus.
    Lamb stew with lemon potatoes was the special of the day.
    Great service, especially for a birthday celebration.
    Everything is drenched in oil and lemon is given for almost every dish but that's what makes it good.

    This restaurant has been on my list of places to visit (as per Time Out New York). Since my fiance and I were in the area today, we stopped in. It's true what the other reviewers say-- the service is very friendly. Upon being seated, we were given bread. I ordered the chicken souvlaki ($12) and my fiance ordered yogurt kebab ($11). We had 1/2 carafe of Retsina ($9.50), a Greek wine, which left me feeling giddy by the time I walked out. The food was delicious and portion sizes were just right. Dessert was on the house-- a mixture of thick Greek yogurt, cherries, and 2 mini-cake-pastries. $35 later we left satisfied, stuffed, and happy. This is an authentic Greek restaurant.

    **Although we paid with a credit card, once our receipt was printed there was no space for a tip, so I assume it's cash tip only??**

    I'm no pro when it comes to greek food but my experience here was awesome. Great ambiance, excellent service, and good food! I came here so long ago so I don't remember exactly what we ordered, but I do remember the Greek salad was so fresh and herbalicious and the fried cheese was definitely something worth trying. The calamari was also really good and not too batter-filled.

    OK. I can't believe I'm about to say this.  This was the BEST Greek food I've ever had (not made by my relatives)!!! Let me tell you, I have tried Greek restaurants all over this country, and nothing comes close to Agnanti!  The food was so fresh and prepared to perfection!  We had a bunch of different appetizers.
    The tzadziki was a perfect balance of garlic, yogurt and cucumber.  They make the yogurt fresh there.
    The village salad with tomatoes and cucumbers was fresh and delicious.
    The horta(greens) were also great!
    Saganaki was right on and not too salty.
    The grilled octopus (one of my favorites), was cooked to perfection and had the perfect consistency and flavor.
    The Ntakos salad with crusty bread, olive oil, and tomatoes.

    The best thing that I had was something that I had never had before.  Shrimp Kataifi.  It was perfectly cooked shrimp surrounded by shredded phylo dough in a honey mustard sauce.  It was so creative and delicious and I just wanted more and more.

    Twas the night before christmas (eve),
    when all through their tummies,
    a deep hunger was stirring,
    not even a ______ !

    The scarves were wrapped on their necks with care,
    in hopes that yummy Greek food would soon be theirs.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Perhaps I should leave poetry to the professionals considering the fact that I could not figure out anything to fill in the blank! Anyone? Anyone?
    Didn't think so. The above is the lyrical version of how Margot G. and I happened upon Agnanti. I wanted to show Margot the Astoria Park area (since I pretty much run there almost every day), and I also wanted to try out this place. Unbeknownst to me, Margot G. had never been to a Greek restaurant before! This would be an adventure for both of us. We opted for two appetizers, one of the entrees from the specials menu (a DELICIOUS lamb stew), and a bottle of wine. The setting is very quaint and rustic, and this is clearly a place you go to dine with your significant other or with a very small group of friends.
    Without further ado, the food:
    Greek sausage with leeks (appetizer): DELISH! And plentiful. We couldn't finish them all with everything else we had on the table.
    Traditional Greek saganaki (appetizer): definitely not my favorite even though it seems to be popular here. I expected it to be served in smaller pieces, but this came out as one big plate of baked cheese, which hardened up after a little while. Not too bad, but definitely not the best.
    Lamb stew (entree): wow. Just, wow. This was amazing. The lamb simply fell off the bone as soon as we attacked it with our utensils. It was flavorful and managed to overpower the vinegary taste you can get from the lemon and carp sauce. The roasted potatoes definitely soaked that taste up, so I passed on those.
    Wine: if you want to go by the glass, you have to choose either the house red or white. If you don't like the house wine, you have to choose a bottle (which we did), but with the decent bottles starting at $40, this can get pricey pretty quickly if you would like to have wine with your meal. The bottle we went with was fantastico, but it also added $40 to our tab when we would have been just as happy with a glass of wine each.
    Near the end of our meal, the server sent over complimentary dessert (the cookies were YUM!) and dessert wine. He also took the time to explain various Greek dishes to us and didn't seem at all fussed with doing so. He definitely earned the generous tip we left for him! :) I'm positive we'll be back.
    I have come here on more than three occasions and believe that the Greek food here is great and the service and atmosphere are cozy in an informal way. What could be better than a nice Greek salad and grilled fish? The food is really really good. The meatballs with rice are delicious.
    I can recommend the salmon, the horta- which is a side of greens that have been cooked with olive oil and lemon and the salads.  The bread they bring to the table is tasty and hoes well with the trahana whi h is this light tomato broth with speckle-shaped pasta and cheese.
    It is across from Astoria Park which makes a great post-prandial stroll.
    Try Agnanti, I think you will find it charming.
    Greek food at its best!
    Friendly, warm staff, who are knowledgable about their menu, and are always recommending their favorites ( Try their daily pies : Meat, veggies)...
    We had:
    1. Grilled Octopus - Full of lemon flavor, and utterly delish!
    2. Scrambled eggs and tomato - There's something comforting about having eggs for brunch...
    3. Yogurt meatball kabob - Delish little meatballs, served with tomato paste, yogurt, and fresh pitas!
    Definitely, need to come here if you love greek food!
    My first thought on my first bite: "I knew I should have come here sooner."
    Have been meaning to try this place for three years, and finally made the occasion to do so two days ago for lunch. Everything tasted fresh, delicious, and seasoned nicely. My mom was delighted with everything.
    Highlights: eggplant dip, homemade leek pie- an entirely delicious variant on spanakopita with flaky, buttery phyllo and other veggies. I could have eaten the whole slice by myself and enjoyed the weight gain.
    Can't wait for additional visits!
    Authentic Greek Food and homemade.
    FOOD:
    Delicious authentic Greek Food.  I would suggest for appetizers getting the Fried Octopus or Calamari. It will probably be near the best you've ever had.  I was told they are known for their awesome seafood dishes, but the Fried Cod was just so-so for me. Not enough flavoring and I'm not a huge fan of Hummus.
    SERVICE:
    Mediocre. It has a more home-y feel to it so not the professional check on you all the time service. It was alright but I prefer to be taken care of better
    ATMOSPHERE:
    They were pretty good with the interior. Had a homestyle greek vibe to it. They were playing some old Greek show on television too I believe. Overall not bad.
    SUMMARY:
    I don't know if it is because I'm a harsh critic of Greek food, but it is the best I've had ever. I would come back to try to fish, but it's not the place I would come back to over and over again. The price was a little borderline for me too, could be more forgiving. If you want good Greek food, this isn't a bad choice.
    Second time I've been here with the first experience being so so, but every time I pass by the restaurant it's packed so I figured why not give it a second shot.
    Me and a buddy of mine ordered take out  two chicken soulvaki platters with horda as the side. When we got there the place was mobbed and after weaseling our way to the register we told a waiter that we had called ahead for our food. He looked at us like we were aliens and the hostess finally came over with the worst attitude and told us the food was coming.
    My buddy asked for change and it was like he asked them for their social security numbers. After all it is a big deal after we just spent money on your restaurant.
    Get back to eat the dinner. Portion was ridiculously small and the vegetables were gross. Only decent thing was the dessert which was ok.
    I ll never go back and don't understand how with all the great Greek restaurants in Astoria that people still go here.
    It's all Greek to me...but this is definitely one of the best Greek experiences I have had so far. This low key venue is located directly across from Astoria Park. The decor and atmosphere are really understated and inviting with limited outdoor seating.
    The menu is more like a small picture book with limitless amounts of entrees, apps, and overall different proteins, etc. The staff is friendly and laid-back and they are always willing to help explain any dish you might have a question about.
    We chose to order a selection of platters and dishes and share everything. Although my grilled calamari was slightly burnt, I thought everything was delicious and the portions were just right. I would definitely recommend this place for a date or a family dinner.
    So good and so cheap! Went here with a party of 5 and the bill came out to $78 with tax! We had the cabbage salad, someone had the grilled calamari which was good; the lemon potatoes were good but I would've liked it more lemony (like Taverna Kyclades'). I had the clams cooked in wine and  the broth was great (and it was only about $13!). The waiters were attentive and we got a complimentary appetizer (can't remember what it's called but it was like ground meat sausage??) and complimentary dessert: sugary bread thing with homemade yogurt...SO GOOD!!
    Greek food is my most favorite thing in life. My last meal would probably be a gyro. So with this said, I was pleasantly surprised after finding Agnanti on yelp while looking for dinner in Astoria. This place is superb. I love that it is small and homey. It's not anywhere fancy schmancy but great for a date or somewhere to have an actual conversation.
    I once ate outside and that was lovely. Was recently here for dinner and again, lovely. The saganacki was great, loved the multigrain bread that was served with it. The spinach pie is excellent. It's not made with just phyllo, has a soft dough crust, really nice.The grape leaves are served warm, delicious. I have also had the stuffed peppers here twice, which taste just like my mom's. The lamb chops are excellent. Pork chops aren't amazing, a little tough, but not enough to stop me from coming back.
    And the best part of this is that dessert is complimentary. Yes, free. Two small pieces of Halva. Love it. A new favorite.
    This was my second visit, I was pleased this time around!  The first time, I went on a Sunday so much more crowded less attention and the octopus was cold and rubbery!!!
    However, I decided to go back...and I think it make a difference to go there when its quieter.  I went at 2:30pm on a Tuesday...I enjoyed the food and service was good since there were only 3 tables.  We took our time, sipped the house red, and ate the mussels (could use more of a kick, a bit on the sweet side) and the stripped pork with fries, it was yummy!!!
    The free desert was very nice too.  Overall, this time I enjoyed.
    My boyfriend and I enjoy going here to momentarily feel like we're in Greece. He was born and raised in northern Greece and hasn't seen his land in 5 years so when he comes here he's in his element and orders 10 different things off the menu. The food is good, the waiters are fine (although I honestly don't notice the service. Even if it's slow, I'd assume they're just Greeks treating their customers like Greeks aka giving everyone lotsa lotsa time to enjoy their meal.) We even went with our chatty semi-loud 2-year old and the staff was very, shall we say, "accommodating" to his one brief tantrum. Order a cheap bottle of Retsina as a simple table wine and you're all set. I actually didn't like the free dessert they give, the little cakes were dry and the yogurt wasn't very sweet (which didn't stop my kiddo from stuffing 2 in his mouth before we could even pick up our spoons.)
    Kali orexi!
    My sister lives in Astoria and Agnanti is definitely one of our go-to spots.  The food is always fresh and delicious and prices are really reasonable.  The house wine is pretty good.  And for $17 per large carafe, you can have a few glasses of vino without emptying your wallet.
    The Greek Salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh feta and red onion is so refreshing and light, it is a menu must.  The mushroom pastries are awesome, and the grilled octopus is always fantastic.  The dolmades tend to be hit or miss, sometimes they are warm and literally melt in your mouth.  Other times, not so much.   They also do NOT fillet the fish for you here.  So if you order the Catch of the Day, be ready to fillet that sucker on your own.
    The best thing about Agnanti is that it is a real, authentic Greek restaurant.  The wait staff are polite and kind, and there are NO touristy types here (hit up Kyclades and you will know what I mean).  It has a family-owned vibe which makes you feel like you are eating at your Greek bestie's grandmother's house.  Simply put, we love it here.
    Very disappointing experience.  The restaurant is very crowded but the main problem is that the food is just not great.  We tried Burek (tasteless and the dough was not crispy), we tried the stuffed calamari (Kalamari) and they were also tasteless.  We enjoyed the red snapper (special of the day).   The bread and the wine by the glass were also mediocre, we were not served anything with the bread unlike some other readers.
    Too bad as we had great expectations
    Went here a month ago and would definitely go again.  We started with the Mushrooms Kalitsounia from Crete; delicious!  We followed with the grilled salmon and fried baccalao.  The salmon was good and the baccalao was great!  The ambience was peaceful and pleasant and the service was excellent.  The prices were reasonable too.  We are looking forward to coming back when the weather is warmer and the outdoor seating area is open!
    I don't like too many things, but I like Agnanti.
    My first few trips here I kept it nice and simple, getting the eggplant dip (insanely good with tons of olive oil and a hint of garlic) chicken and enjoying the lemon potato(e)s it came with.
    However, recently I came here with my dude from Greece (the country)who essentially ordered all the appetizers on the menu for the table to share in lieu of main courses. The greek sausage with leeks, various phylos with cheese, the spianch pie and the grilled vegetables are all delicious and this is a better look, in my opinion, as everyone gets to share and people love to share. Look at me and my expanded horizons.
    Tables can be a bit cramped, sometimes when you have a reservation it doesnt seem to matter much and the service as noted in many reviews can be a bit hit or miss, but the quality of the food for the prices makes these very minor concerns.
    On a nice day, you can eat outside overlooking Astoria park. Yes, you can.
    I've been here a few times and I must say the food is good but the service and ambiance is definitely lacking.
    The Moussaka is delicious as well as their veggies and yogurt kebab. The lentil soup they had as a daily special was the best I've ever tasted.
    However, I really dislike how close the tables are and how frequent the waitstaff ends up bumping into you during your meal. I also wish they would refill my water without me asking. Every time I go here the staff is oblivious to my empty glass and I always have to hunt down my waiter for a refill.
    The service is either slow or authentically Mediterranean, I can't tell quite which. But delicious food, some cheap carafes of red wine, and al fresco dining on a beautiful spring day make that forgivable.
    If there's any reason this review began with a comment on the service, it was being in desperate need of bread after all the mussels in the Midia Krasata were done.  An extra basket wasn't enough for all the briny, tomato and wine goodness left at the bottom of the bowl.
    Soutzakakia from Smyrna were an alright take on meatballs in tomato sauce.  Football shaped but not particularly memorable for any other reason.
    Of the two cheese appetizers we got, Saganaki trumps the Tyrokafteri hands down.  Salty, gooey, mouth scorching hot and irresistible. Cheese was also the star in the cured beef, cheese and phyllo wrapped Pastroumali.  I don't even remember if the Tigania we got was pork or chicken, but I do remember the accompanying lemony creamy potatoes.
    This was the best greek food I've ever had.
    My best friend brought me to Agnati because as greeks they said it was one of the best they've been to other than their relative's home cooking in greece.
    I can't really remember the name of most of the dishes since my friend and her mom ordered everything in greek
    Service was great, they were friendly and very attentive.
    Of what I remember the names of:
    Mousaka-Delicious. Layers of eggplant, minced meat, potatoes and with a thick layer of cheese on top- it was warm and hearty.
    Greek Salad- The best I've had. Cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, onions, and feta cheese. We even sopped up the left over olive oil with the bread and pita on the side.
    The pita came with this dip with a consistency that reminds of humus, but it was made of fish roe- so fresh and delicious. Very potent, delicious with lemon and warm pita bread
    The fried calamari is a basic dish, but I'm happy to say that it was fresh and delicious- not rubbery at all.
    I wish I knew the names of all the dishes that I got a taste of because they were all phenomenal
    While we were leaving, I was already contacting another friend of mine who's a foodie that we had to go to Agnati for great greek food.
    Ok.. I went here for the first time with some friends on Friday (March 18, 2011) and I can say this...
    This place is outrageously small and being a large individual I opted to eat outside (which wasn't bad). Its was seriously busy that evening and from what I heard, its ALWAYS busy on Fridays. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated (which wasn't bad) but seeing people who arrived after us (who spoke the language) get seated before us wasn't to comforting.
    Not being of Greek decent, I indulged in delicacies I can not  pronounce. I can say this I tasted  everything from the grill octopus to the grilled porks, with wine and salad in the middle - all in all it was very delicious.
    I recommend Agnanti's of Astoria to anyone but if you weight 300+ lbs. you better go during the week and leave the weekend dining to the skinny, more fit folks.
    I come here  often with friends  and I like it, from  the food that is  not  bad at all, the owner  is a nice lady,  to the Peruvian bass boy that  is so friendly and ask you all the time if everything is good  and  they do offer  free desert  in the end of your meal, all the dishes are very good but  i  have a favorite dish here  that  i do recommend  you  to try  the broiled  chicken with french fries is to die for is so simple and yet so good
    The star is the food which was good. Everything else was the worst i had.
    It has been a while since i was there but i just joined Yelp and i feel that i have to share my expirience.
    i use to go there once every 3months or so.... never again..
    Me, my wife, my mother and my 2kids show up on a Sunday afternoon. The front door had an Amex and Visa sticker on it. I usually pay cash and was going to run to the bank, i saw the stickers and decided to not bother.
    We walk in and wait in that awkard tiny space. after 10minutes or so, we sit.
    Our waiter shows up. He is either drunk or drugged. He loses our food 2 or 3 times. He never comes over when we call him, he is a complete mess... We ate the food. It was good, a little cold but good.
    The check shows up without ordering it. It comes in a little Amex binder.
    I take out my amex put it in the binder and call the waiter. After a few minutes he comes over to take the check. He opens the binder right in front of me, i guess i dont look trust worthy, and he says. "No credit cards" and this is a quote. No sorry in the mix....
    After a few minutes arguing the the sticker on the front door and the amex binder, he heads over to the owner (Rudest person in restaurant bussiness). He finally comes back saying that he will accept visa, doing me a favor. He brings back the print out for signing and scratches the tip line saying cash only. Always looking at me like i am trying to pull a fast one.
    Yes i did leave 18%tip because the waiter seamed drunk and i had my 2kids with me.
    NEVER EVER going there again. When friends are inviting me, i thank them and decline.
