This is a rare gem - what coffeeshops used to (and should) be like.  I can't say enough about all the things this place has going for it:

    * The coffee is very good.  They serve french press, with a timer should you wish.  Enough said.
    * They serve it in real mugs (which also happen to be probably the coolest mug you will ever drink a coffee in)
    * The wifi is open, fast, and reliable
    * There are outlets galore
    * The clientele is chill.  People come to linger, but there are enough spaces for everyone and people still treat it like a coffeeshop and not their personal office

Come early (by 9) and get the table on the first floor by the window.  You'll have a killer view of Pike's Peak and at around 11 (in the winter) the sun begins to brightly shine through the window and onto your table.

    The staff are super friendly.

The only downside - there's sort of a weird religious library vibe going on upstairs, which I think is cool but do be warned it is very quiet (and work focused) up there.  If you're meeting a friend for coffee make sure you check for seats downstairs first.

I can't vouch for the food, but if it's as good as the coffee this place is an all-around winner.

So we were in Monument, CO for a wedding and my sisterwife had to study for her CFA  exam, and so after a bit of Yelping, we ended up at Agia Sophia -- it's amazing and hilarious and everything you would expect from a place fun by the Greek Orthodox church.

The space is wonderful to study or curl up with one of their trillion God books -- and naturally, I recommend snacking whilst you are examining the illustrations of saints hung around the upstairs lounge. The hummy was excellent and creamy and the sandwiches were a crunchy delight.

Salads are around $7, as are sandwiches -- the tea selection is fantastico, and the coffee, while not A+, is perfectly drinkable.

Oh, strong people watching -- hipsters + gays + Air Force Academy students + CC hippies. LOVE.

There is no way this can be the #1 for restaurants and shopping for the springs, as it isn't really a restaurant and there isn't much shopping other than for books I guess. They serve some paninis and desserts like most coffee shops do, so it's OK for lunch but don't be expecting a full blown restaurant. They have a nice reading spot upstairs, but this place came off as a little snooty for my taste. There are also 3 or 4 businesses that share the same building so it's a little weird to see family portrait photos on the walls which are an advertisement for the studio in the back.

Coffee shops are all pretty similar, and this one isn't much different, but they do have decent coffee and food.

This place pisses me off.  For one thing, on the C. Springs Welcome Page, it comes up as the #1 Restaurant and the #1 Shopping location...both of which would mislead people.  Yes, it's a great little coffee shop with cozy little areas to read books, surf the internet and just hide away.

Restaurant - not really the #1 spot to eat in the Springs.  You can't accommodate parties larger than 4 people and not kid friendly at all.  I felt like I had to be quiet if eating here...if your idea of a great restaurant is sitting in front of your MAC notebook and eating alone, then yes.  If you want to have a social setting, than no.   If Starbucks started serving more than pastries and soup, I wouldn't call it a restaurant.  I wouldn't call Starbucks a bakery either...or a dessert place.

Food - standard sandwich faire and a decent dessert selection.  Again, not a place to go for food alone.

Bookstore - um...not great...there are books everywhere but this place pales in comparison to a real bookstore...even Barnes and Noble beats this place.

Atmosphere - best atmosphere of any coffee / tea place in the Springs.

The prices are a bit high, the food not special, but the coffee is very good. If you are just looking for a pace to stop and grab a coffee, this is a good location. If you are looking to linger, not so sure.

It is ran by a religious group that also makes money taking staged photos. The place has a (for me) uncomfortable vibe that creeps me out. It is quite and the people are generally nice, but it is stuffy and all of the orthodox stuff just sinks in and gets to me.

I am not sure this place would receive such high marks if you were to take away the cozy second floor for reading.

While the building is historic and interesting, the first floor shares space with an 'Olan Mills' type photo studio that displays creepy family portraits.  That aside, it is interesting.  But on to the food and drink.  This is where quality takes a nose dive.  DO not get a panini sandwich unless you like stale hard  panini bread and mild Italian sauce.  I upgraded mine with a side salad with Italian dressing.  Again, not recommended.   I am pretty sure, the dressing was out of a bottle and while the leaves had that 'fresh out of a supermarket bag taste' and the parmigiana cheese could have come from that same bag as a salad-kit-accessory, the croutons were possibly home made.  As far as the cream soda....it was about middle of the road, a bit sickly sweet for my taste.  It was made on the spot from club soda, syrup and half-and half cream though.

All in all, I was completely underwhelmed by the food.  The second floor is very unique and cozy.  I think more coffee shops could follow this pattern and cozy up their shops with home-style furnishings for customers to relax in.

Also,  I paid about $12 for the food...the same price as a real restaurant with much better food.

Next time, I will just get a coffee.

Had to try the chai that I had been hearing about so much.  I can't believe people call this the best chai they have ever had.  It's basically powdered creamer with tons of artificial flavorings.  yuck.

Agia Sophia must be one of Colorado Springs' most unusual spots--a welcome break from a restaurant and retail scene that is often just offensively bland. Located in Old Colorado City, Agia Sophia is a coffee shop/cafe/bookstore somehow affiliated with Saints Helen and Constantine Orthodox Church.

The atmosphere appropriately follows suit:  dark wood, stained glass light fixtures, lots of bookshelves (featuring mostly classic literature or books on Orthodoxy), hand-painted icons, soft Orthodox chanting on the speakers, and the smell of espresso. With any luck you'll catch Father Anthony, the priest at Saints Helen and Constantine Church, behind the counter pulling espresso shots, making sandwiches, and chatting with the patrons. But somehow all of this doesn't end up being too stuffy--Agia Sophia creates an atmosphere that is serious but relaxing, complete yet not contrived.

DRINKS: I can confidently recommend their coffee, roasted by Umpire State right here in Colorado Springs. The coffee doesn't make any extravagant claims and it hasn't changed my life, but it is consistently good. You can order all sorts of dessert-y espresso drinks, straightforward and stiff Americanos, or a French Press for two. Agia Sophia also has a diverse loose-leaf tea selection, and the tea pot for two is a really good deal.

FOOD: The food menu is limited mostly to "Mediterranean" pita sandwiches. I recommend the Greek Veggie sandwich and the Mediterranean Platter, both of which feature plenty of olives, hummus, and feta cheese. The platter also has good dolmas.

In short, go there. It's one of Colorado Springs' few gems.

Agia Sophia is a strange and wonderful coffee shop.

On the main floor, you'll find a coffee bar, a few tables you can lounge around in, bookshelves with books that have price tags on them, and if you walk down the hall, a photography studio. I still can't tell if the coffee shop, the bookstore and the photographers are affiliated in any way, or if they just share the space. I also can't tell if they're actually affiliated with the Eastern Orthodox Church, or if the owner's just an adherent.

The building is old, the coffee is decent and the atmosphere is unique. Where else can you sip on chai while listening to gregorian chants? Nowhere I know of.

The parking is tough to find sometimes, as it's right on Colorado avenue, and there are no meters out front. Which is good if there's a spot, but bad if there isn't. They have free wi-fi which is a huge plus.

Once you wander upstairs through the almost unnoticeable stairway, you'll find another floor full of books and nooks to sit at. One side effect of having so many books is that it feels like a library. You'll see couples sitting at small tables almost whispering to each other. This is fine if you want to get some work done, but I don't recommend going there if you have a very large group or want to talk a lot. Voices carry really easily, and people will frown if you get too loud.

If you really do want to go with a group, they do have rooms you can reserve upstairs (I think you have to pay for them).

I've tried the coffee, lattes, french presses, and chais. They're nothing particularly special, but not bad either. I never order food at a coffee shop, so I can't comment on the menu.

If you've never been, give it a shot! I guarantee you've never had an orthodox coffee experience like this before.

I'm in love with this joint, and I can't believe I haven't reviewed them before! Craziness.
This is where I met my husband! Of course I'm giving it 5 stars. But aside from romance, it's also a really neat coffee joint.
It's in an old house in OCC, and is really cute and quiet inside. Upstairs there are comfy seats and lots of books and nooks and a couple rooms for meetings, but upstairs is mostly considered the unofficial "quiet area"; most talking is done downstairs. There are a few tables scattered around inside and out.
The coffee and tea is good, and they have a few snacky things too (I just had the apple pie and it was lovely). The last time I ordered a smoothie it was IMMENSE, and only about 2-3 bucks.
It is run by a church or religious group or something, and if you're lucky you'll be served by...whoever he is, in his robes. I'm totally not religious so I have no idea what he's called (and only know it's Eastern Orthodox because I can see another review someone else wrote on my sidebar), I'm not trying to offend anyone. Anyway, they're not super in your face with the religious part. They do play religious music and have religious books everywhere, but that's about it.
All in all it's a super cute place with good coffee and tea, and I will go back every time I'm in COS.

I spent the night in Colorado Springs last night, and I knew I needed some coffee and a bagel. Hoping I would find something in downtown, near the Broadmoor, or in a swank area, I went to Yelp mobile for help to see what it would come up with. The first thing on the list was Agia Sophia, and, to say the least, I was a bit skeptical.

It wasn't too far out of the way as I made my way to old Colorado City (I believe the original capital of Colorado), expecting to see some gift shops, antiques, or other western decor. I came up to Agia Sophia and still wasn't conviced this was the place I wanted to spend the morning. I walked in, and my mood completely changed.

The building was decorated with early 1900's decor, and it was definitely an old house. It seemed very friendly and welcoming. I was in fact welcomed and proceeded to order a bagel with cream cheese and my usual - a 16oz cup of coffee. As I was waiting for my bagel to be toasted, I noticed that the guy in the corner had a personal french press. I was about to ask if I could pay the difference, when I noticed she started making a french press for me. She set everything on a tray for me and asked, "Are you familiar with french presses?" I answered with a smile, "Yes I am. In fact I am delightfully surprised you serve french press coffee." I proceeded to eat my bagel and drink my coffee. The coffee was very good tasting (still inferior to clover coffee, but far superior to drip coffee).

My morning turned out better than I was even hoping. I don't give Agia Sophia 5 stars only because 5 stars for every review makes people wonder if it's really that good. Take a morning and go to Agia Sophia. It will add another notch in the "this is why i love colorado" book!

Again-close to home automatic stars for that! Without a doubt our favorite place to sip coffee, tea or a rocking frappe while studying, reading or just hanging out with a good book and a significant other.
The furniture is extremely comfortable, some big couches and armchairs as well as two large and a couple small work tables-all adjacent to windows. We have eaten here several times and find that while this is definitely not a fast food environment all of our plates and sandwiches have been delicious. I have gotten a ton of work done here in this great serene environment and expect that I will accomplish even more there in the future.

This place has atmosphere. Some coffee shops attempt to setup an atmosphere and it comes off feeling canned. You can tell Agia nails it because people are comfortable in here. Just go in and look around. Odds are good you'll see people relaxing and talking.

This is pretty far from where we typically hang out but it is a worthwhile spot to visit.

As I entered Agia Sophia today, I was greeted by an orthodox priest in robes and long beard, who whipped me up an excellent iced latte, served in a tall pilsner glass.

Agia Sophia is a Russian orthodox themed coffee shop/bookstore/photography studio in Old Colorado City.  The furniture is antique and interesting, the coffee is excellent, the internet is free and the setting is beautiful.  The chai is also especially good.

    Edited 1/28/08:
I hosted a baby shower at Agia Sophia this weekend.  There are two rooms upstairs that are reservable for up to 13 people.  We had the Russian room.  I ordered food and a Russian samovar tea service from them.  We had a great experience.  We got more than enough food for everyone for about $100.  Even better-- we didn't have to set up or clean up!  I'd definitely host an even there again.

Ambiance: Extremely original one-of-a-kind experience. The theme here is "Eastern Orthodox" Christianity, and this theme is carried out to perfection in every detail of this place. The music is perfect, with the right volume, and sets the mood for your visit. Set in a restored century-year-old building, this is a two-story establishment with vaulted ceiling and several rooms and alcoves to chose from to relax and enjoy your hot drink. Free Wi-Fi. Excellent spot to read, study, or enjoy a relaxed conversation with a good friend or a new acquaintance. The place is adorned with Orthodox artwork and imagery, and there is a small retail area downstairs displaying Orthodox books for sale. Antique tables and chairs, as well as some comfy chairs. There are also a few bar stools at the counter to sit as well.

Service: Counter service, but if you order food, they will deliver to your table. Very friendly and cheerful.

Drink / Food: Primarily a spot to savor a great drink (hot or cold). Large selections of coffees, lattes, teas, mochas, etc. All prepared to perfection. Served in a great, unique looking over-sized mug. They have some brought-in breads and pastries, but I like the fact that there is also a menu of items that are made on-site for those wishing to have a small snack or light meal with their beverage. Their breakfast quesadilla is awesome. It is basically prepared paninni-style, with scrambled egg, good quality cheese and a thin ham steak nestled between two tortillas and grilled. Served with a very nice salsa on the side. Very good, not greasy. Filling without the heavy feeling you experience from a fat-ladden coffee shop breakfast. For lunch, they prepare fresh salads, sandwiches and soups, all very good!

This (along with one other establishment in town) is my go-to place if I am looking to relax and spend a few hours reading and enjoying a hot beverage and a small bite. Great place on a wintry snowy Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when you want to get out, but be in a warm, cozy environment. I come out very relaxed every time I patronize this place. A true gem in Colorado Springs. (And why someone would continue to patronize Starbucks a few blocks away when Agia Sophia is such a more rewarding and enjoyable experience is beyond me!)

This place is serious. Not in a boring way and not in an intimidating way. Just in a solid and deep way. They make very good food and they take their time to make it right. They sell excellent books and they limit the selection to books that address timeless issues.

This is a place for people who like to sit, think, eat, and drink. I've enjoyed every visit I've made and I expect to make over over the years.

Agia Sophia's is one of Old Colorado City's little secrets.  From the outside, you would never guess it is a fantastic two-story coffee shop.

My favorite thing is the privacy of the place.  There are little rooms all over the place with comfortable chairs and couches.  It's easy to settle in and enjoy the free wireless next to a sunny window.  The walls downstairs are covered with professional portraits by the resident professional photographer.  Upstairs is decorated with Greek Orthodox and Russian relics.  It is a very unique place.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but they have an assortment of teas and if you get there early enough, some great homemade pie.  They serve sandwiches and an assortment of pastries, as well.

I can summarize this establishment with one word: awesome!  The place is nice decorated with furnishings (aka icons) that people can buy at a reasonable price.

We ordered a turkey BBQ panini and soup & salad with bread.  They came  with generous portion and were really tasty.  The ladies that worked behind the counter were very nice and helpful.  This is truly a pleasant place that I will visit again when coming to the area.

Finally, a coffee shop with some real character.

I've been several times, and each time been very impressed...the iced chai is delicious, and I often judge a place by their chai.  The pot of tea for one actually has several cups worth inside, which I appreciated.  Also, when I ordered the humus plate and ran out of pita before running out of humus (they give you a lot!), they just offered to make me more, I didn't even ask.  That makes up for the fact that they can be slow bringing you the food, at least they are generous.

The place is pretty small, with most of the comfy seating upstairs (to the right, just in the door);  however, I kind of like how there are lots of little nooks and crannies.  The orthodox theme (hence the name...) is carried out quite well and gives the place a great atmosphere, complete with ambient music that's just loud enough to be appreciated but not loud enough to be obnoxious.

Plus, free unlimited wi-fi. What's not to love?

This place takes the cake on atmosphere - coffee shop and bookstore nestled in a historic building in a historic part of town.  Brilliant.  Now add to this amazing, locally roasted coffee and it doesn't get any better.

I almost hesitate to share such a review because I'm afraid it will get busier and busier and will not have any room when I visit!  I frequent this place often.  Upstairs, you'll find a library like work/study/read atmosphere.  Downstairs allows for more boisterous meet a friend conversation.

Come to Agia and leave warmed and inspired.

LOVE this place.  The book club I belong to met in one of Agia Sophia's upstairs rooms last night and it was great.  I paid $25.00 to reserve it for two hours and the $25.00 could be used as a credit towards a food/beverage purchase.  The gentleman who helped us was very friendly and managed our food orders and delivery to the room just fine (and there were 8 of us)!  He placed cold water in the room for us as well.  I thoroughly enjoyed the turkey BBQ panini I ordered and would definitely order it again.  Lots of coffee, tea and food options to choose from at reasonable prices.  There are religious and non-religious books throughout the place.  Someone reading the other reviews might get the impression that the religious feel of the shop might be strong and uncomfortable if you are not religious, but I really don't think so.  Just seemed like a very cool, relaxing, interesting place to be to me!  I highly recommend you give this wonderful little place your business!

This place was highly recommended by some friends of our in the area as the go to place for amazing coffee and a great hang out.  They were half-right.  The atmosphere is certainly on the unique side.  There are a couple of floors and plenty of areas to find a quiet and comfortable spot, a problem in many coffee shops these days.  It is also fun to browse through the various Orthodox books.  Always up for a good french press I walked in to check-it out.  There was one guy behind the counter making frozen faux coffee drinks for a group of four people in front of them.  He was obviously behind and short staffed, but it was a holiday weekend.  It still would have been nice if he acknowledged my presense when I went to stand in line and not after I had been waiting there for 10 minutes.  After some time, he came to take my order.  I ordered a french press for me and a caffe latte for my wife.  He mentioned that the french press needed to steep for five minutes (I prefer four minutes, but I said sure!).  I thought he would start the french press so that it could steep while he made the latte, but instead he went to start the latte.  If you're a coffee purist, this is the momen you become horrified.  He walked-up to one of those machines that......that you just press a button and it spits out espresso!!! (I posted a picture of it)  He then put the milk pitcher by the machine, placed the wand all the way to the bottom of it, turned it on, and walked away!  Not only was there not a real espresso machine, they couldn't even steam milk right!  The final drink products didn't taste bad, but they weren't stellar either.  The french press didn't seem like the water was hot enough in the first place.  For the purist, you'll be let down.  However, if you need a quiet place to meet a friend then check it out.  Don't bother ordering a latte and paying alot of money for a semi-fake drink.  Stick with some tea or drip coffee instead.

It took me way too long to pay Agia Sophia a visit, but I finally landed myself there. Seating was a little crowded, but it was a Saturday afternoon, so I enjoyed the energy. I was happy to see so many people and can't wait to come back here as a study spot - I was just jealous of the better seats! :) I really liked how even though there was a packed house, it wasn't too loud. I think you could be comfortable reading here, or hanging out with friends. Even though I live on the North side of town and this is quite a drive, it is worth the trip.

Their chai is so unusual but good, worth checking out just for it's sweet, creaminess. Sometimes it can get a little hot upstairs but mostly the atmosphere is great. Love the iconography. Not preachy at all. The green iced tea is also good. Heard the live music once (from upstairs) and enjoyed it.

It's OK, but nothing incredible...    My wife likes it though.

Being an out of towner, we've only visited this place once, but our americano's were fantastic, the employees pleasant, and the atmosphere truly exceptional!  Certainly an outstanding independent coffee shop!  And we were able to pick up a small-press copy of "Wisdom of the Desert Fathers"!

My rating system (for the curious):
Five Stars - Fantastic. I'd go often if I could.
Four Stars - Really good. It's likely I'll return.
Three Stars - Good, but I won't seek it out for a return visit.
Two Stars - I won't go again. This could be due to food, price, atmosphere, whatever.
One Star - I won't go again and I suggest everyone follow suit.

We are visiting Colorado Springs for Christmas and found this little gem through yelp.  Delicious mochas, great cream cheese panini and very quaint atmosphere.  Quiet and cozy, next time I am in town, I will be making a return visit to Agia sophia.

Espresso and latte were both very good. They pulled a long shot with a good amount of crema. Place has a good vibe and very friendly staff.

One of the most restful, relaxing places to meet friends, study, read. One of the first places I think of when I want to connect with someone. I love the art and book-lined walls, the Greek Orthodox icons, the comfortable atmosphere. Friendly staff. Plus free wi-fi. What's not to like.

A great place for a cup of coffee, a good book and relaxation. Free wifi is a definite plus. Also has lots of Russian orthodox books and chant.

Finally a decent coffee shop that's open relatively lat in the Springs. How did it take me so long to find it!? Very pleased by the prices - mochas are about the same cost as at s'bucks. I also had the grilled pita and hummus plate. Very tasty! Perfect snack for two or a filling treat for one.

Beautiful little shop in a quaint little building. Agia Sophia has a tasty menu, good tea and coffee, a quiet atmosphere, and lots of books and art.
