I just visited AgeSong's two buildings on Laguna Street after seeing every other place in the city with quality dementia care. It was amazing. I was uncomfortable about the for-profit status of the residential care corporation, but assured by its roots in the affiliated non-profit Pacific Institute on Aging as well as AgeSong's reputation in the community. This is the place to go if you want quality residential care for your physically, cognitively, or emotionally troubled loved one. They talk about "forgetfullness" and "flourishing" rather than "dementia" and "safety." No one was lying around in their bedrooms, but rather were up and out and engaged with one another, staff, and activities. I did not see the secured floors, but I can see why this is the go-to place for elders other assisted living places cannot handle optimally. No one here is "troubled" -- all are individuals and seem to get an incredible amount of individual attention. I do NOT know any residents or staff, so the people who really know for sure are those with loved-ones here, but they have a family support group that meets twice a month and you can meet them there, I think! Really impressive model.

Meet the Business Owner: Dr. Nader Robert Shabahangi S.
Nader received his Doctorate from Stanford University, is a licensed psychotherapist, and is cofounder of AgeSong. His multicultural background has fueled his passion for becoming an advocate for marginalized groups and for creating programs with the purpose of caring more comprehensively for elders. As CEO, Nader ensures that the company's vision drives its decisions and plans for elder care services. In 1992, Nader also founded the Pacific Institute, a nonprofit organization that defines its mission as one of helping elders live meaningful lives. Nader is a frequent guest lecturer, including presenting at international conferences focusing on aging, counseling, and dementia. In 2003 he authored Faces of Aging, a book challenging stereotypical views of the aging process and of growing old. In 2008 he co-authored Deeper Into the Soul, a book aimed at de-stigmatizing and broadening our understanding of dementia.
