15 reviews for Age Defy Dermatology & Wellness
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Beverly Hills-style derm clinic in the neighborhood, all of the frou-frou with expert treatment for regular PPO folks like you and me. I got acne as an adult and it has been getting worse, especially since I can't afford to fly to LA to see Renee, my esthetician extraordinaire, every month.
I've tried all the expensive treatment kits from Sephora, I had prescription routines that didn't work, I bought a Clarisonic brush, none of it worked and I was at wit's end with a dermatologist who spends half of every month in London! A wonderful friend referred me to Age Defy with glowing recommendations for Joe.
Joe Gorelick listened to my concerns, discussed my history in detail and doesn't take it personally if I don't like the routines he prescribes. So far it's the only affordable thing that has worked.
I've been a beauty product junkie since my teens, spent thousands of dollars on products, from drugstore brands to la mer. Yet I couldn't find something to give me clear skin. Went to several doctors for acne problems and their prescribed topical cream only leave my skin sensitive and break out even more.
Until I found Joe. I'd highly recommend Joe to any friends or family because not only he's extremely knowledgeable and professional the best part about Joe is that he listens to you! You'd never feel he's rushing to get to the next patient, or trying to get you to try something new so he can get rid of you. He listens to your concern and map out a routine that would probably work for you and make sure you know how to contact him if you're unhappy with the routine for any reason. If you're at your wits end to get clear skin, please do yourself a favor and make an appointment with Joe.
Now months later after my initial visit with Joe, I feel free to sport my face, free of make up. I use make up whenever I want to, but it's no longer a desperate attempt to hide something. Vy's correct that this is definitely the place to get expert treatment for regular PPO folks like you and I.
Came here with my GF for her dermatologist visit due to acne problems. She got a referral from a family friend.
First impression of this office, is this a beauty salon or a doctor's office? they got a boutique shop filled w/ random overpriced junk , posters of ads for lipo, skin thearpy, massage stuff...
Here are the main reasons why i am giving this place a bad review.
1. She booked appt well in advance for 3.30 appt on a saturday. We get a call from the office at 1.30PM the SAME day, FORCING her to RESCHEDULE to 2.30. WTF IS THAT?!?!?!? when we are late or don't provide sufficient notice to Dr's, patients pay ridiculous fine for no show, what kind of doctor changes these things w/ no notice??
we get there are 2.30, we were not seen until after 3pm. i do not care the reason why the doctor can't see us, unless it's an EMERGENCY, you agreed to xyz time, you stick with it. ppl have lives and busy schedules, if you have empty slots in between and want to take the sat off early, not my problem, should have thought of this before agreeing to give out that appt. Personally, i also will not tolerate waiting in line for 30 min to see a doc, esp when i make an appt time for xyz time. if you will not be on time, fuck the appt system.
2. Doctor prescribes this overpriced tablet --NON GENERIC-- where as there is a generic available in different but similar strength. obviously there's some kickback going on!!! this is the exact reason for ballooning medical insurance rates.
3. they do the upsell during this office visit and tries to get her to buy two bottles of xyz for $50. wtfffff. she paid for it but i made her go return it. if it is a medically required item, it would be covered by prescription, not paid out of pocket. we do not need your overpriced "protopic" or similar products.
4. last pointer to add. i called the nurse to get the prescription revised to the generic version's strength. receptionist told me they'd return phone call within 1 hr. i waited for over an hr, i call them back, they change their story to they check it over lunch, not hourly basis. it's 1.10pm, i call them back, their receptionist goes, "i don't know who told u how often they check their msgs, they only do it when they have time or the next day. WTFFFFF-- why the different responses.
5. my gf was at Nordstrom before her doctor's visit, they had some free make up, facial session thing going on, her face was COVERED WITH MAKE UP. dr NOODLEMAN didn't even asked her to REMOVE the make up and treated her condition based on the covered face, wtffffff. this shows that he is either a psychic or an idiot .
--
6. MUST ADD ANOTHER REASON WHY THE DOC IS AN IDIOT
so i tried getting the nurse to change my prescription from NAME BRAND to generic. The doctor WOULD NOT DO it. (the out of pocket copay for myself is identical due to devious tricks from the drug manufacturer) The nurse says the reason is that the generic is not extended release type therefore the doc wants us to go for the name brand. Because i have done my homework for my GF, i have googled and talked to MULTIPLE pharmacies that the generic version of the SAME DRUG and is extended release. i told the nurse that the doc is WRONG. hey noodleman, are you sure you are an MD?!??!?! i don't have a Doctorate but i am very good at using google and talking to pharmacists. all i spent was 5 minutes (ok fine maybe longer) on the phone with multiple well trained pharmacists at CVS and RITEAID, they all have confirmed that the drug is extended release. go back to school and stop ripping your clients off.
call me too trustworthy but the FDA would not classify anything that is NOT COMPATIBLE IF THEY ARE NOT 100% COMPATIBLE.
Had the doc's reason been i want her to have a stronger dose or the xxMG is too weak and the generic is only available in XX strength, i would have bought his excuse.
-- end result, i shut the nurse up and got her to give me the generics. so fellow yelpers, do you really want to pay big bucks to see an incompetent hollywood type of doctor??? your call!!
EDIT
more fuck ups by their nurses.
so i told the nurse the strength and type of the compatible generic to authorize. when i got the the pharmacy, they filled it for a 50mg non extended release generic. i was SHOCKED. how complicated is it to take explicit directions? makes me wonder the accreditation of their staff. thank god i'm knowledgeable in the meds and that these meds aren't life threatening blackbox types. i will update my review w/ further findings
these SIX pts *(originally 4) show that this place is not in it for the patients and that they are in it to sell beauty products and to rip off the patients.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
if you need a real dermatologist, i personally recommend jennifer chan or tin tin tun at the el camino medical group in Mountain View. They have helped me w/ my dermatologist needs.
I was a patient of Dr. David Harris for years and also saw Dr. Rick Noodleman on occasion. They were both ok. I just go in every few years to have my moles examined. Nothing about the office stands out in mind as be great or really bad.
For the past year Dr. Rick Noodleman & his staff have given me superior care. Dr. Rick Noodleman has a gentle touch & is a gentle human being.
During a medically difficult time in my life Dr. Rick Noodleman treated me so gently that meant so much to me.
I hate the incompetency and unprofessionalism of this place. They are truly all about the $$. Don't be fooled by their "smiles", it's quite fake.
Like one of the reviewers below stated, yes WE can do BETTER.
With that said, my facialist was very nice..it's just unfortunate that she works here. I don't care too much for the Dr's or the other office staff. They are extremely unorganized and I wouldn't trust them to act in your best interest, do your research first before coming here.
I have that type of skin (fair, freckles, moles) that requires constant surveillance, so I have seen myriad dermatologists. By far, Dr. Joe Gorelick is the best I've seen. He has a GREAT bedside manner, listens intently, provides excellent advice, and is comprehensive and thorough. He concerns himself with everything skin-related and provides exceptional options and help. For example, during a check of moles (he found three that were troublesome so meticulously removed them with no traces - a first in my life), he noticed my heels look like an aging lizard's skin and identified the condition and prescribed a cream that resolved it immediately. He also diagnosed what I thought (and was told) was a rosy complexion as adult rosacea and prescribed a regimen that wiped it out. Dr. Gorelick has a wonderful sense of humor and communicates every step of the way.
The office staff is friendly, efficient, professional and knowledgeable. I never have to wait longer than 5 minutes. I'm in and out quickly. I never have to mess with insurance (the office staff handles that extremely well.)
I love this place and feel sad for those who have had any bad experiences or felt slighted by this organization. I've been there several times over the past 6 months and have not had one experience that was not positive.
WE CAN DO BETTER. My partner/spouse and I have visited the Campbell location of this chain many times and have this conclusion: 1) The procedures (mostly) work (see resent burn below), but 2) the "service" personnel do not (i.e., front desk, billing are truly gutter level). At the prices charged (in Campbell!), we expect to be treated like we are at The Four Seasons, not visiting the doctors office of a HMO. I can elaborate on both points.
The varied and effective procedures have kept us coming back (my spouse was disgusted before me and is now much happier having decamped to Blue Cocoon), but after my latest package is exhausted, no more. There are *a lot* of qualified dermatology offices out there. The prices are comparable to the highest in San Francisco in my experience, which can be OK.
The bad part: scheduling, billing, patient coordination (confused overlapping procedures), lack of respect for patients. They (not all of them, mind you, but enough) seem to exude a strange combination being put-out by your presence (think fast-food drive-through) and the all too-common medical industry arrogance (think high-end retail help if you do something other than quickly plop down big cash). An earlier reviewer called them 'unresponsive'.
If I am scheduling a $1000 procedure, should 'unresponsive' even come into my mind?
Unfortunately, it does, in all the areas. I expect better. I need better. It is expensive for me to spend the time getting them to return calls (or even resolve something in the office!).
I can go into more detail on each of these points, but the general point is I suggest looking elsewhere before back-stopping on this place. We can do better.
This business is as much in the hospitality/spa business as it is in the 'medical' business. We can find much better. Let us patronize someone else. Think of something worse than the DMW delivering spa services in a 5-star office. If you don't like yourself and insist on treating yourself to 2nd class service, then go to the good doctor: Joe. Noodleman will wear (and keep on the whole time) his 2-way radio headset into every examination room and be interrupted anytime. He will not return calls about procedures gone awry.
UPDATE:
Something much more stark in either outright fraud or stark, insistent incompetence.
Truly horrible. Last procedure burned my face for which I am still healing nearly two weeks later. No return calls. Just a nasty gram in the mail that it is my fault. Coincidentally, their (intentionally frustrating?) accounting department turned away a reimbursement check from my insurance company because it was for 1/10 of their quoted price and I had already pre-paid. If they had taken the check, they would have to refund me the full amount. How hard to you think they work and even reconciling the issue?
They demanded payment up front for all procedures even though they could directly bill to insurance. When the insurance company sent them the reimbursement check, they refused a refund to me and turned away the check. Intentionally sloppy or outright fraud?
Willing to risk it? Hope it doesn't happen to you. Going somewhere else is obviously the safer option.
I love age defy! Dr. Joe is awesome and always gives me the help i need quickly and easily. I am on accutane now and its working GREAT. i've heard of other people being on it and their face flakes etc. but dr. Joe started me off really low and worked his way up and my face is so soft. Also i love the Revercel skin care line. Doreen is the sweetest and she always goes above and beyond to get me what i need. Ive been using their makeup for a while now and people always compliment me on my skin (little do they know what lies underneath the makeup). Haha i always send my friends to age defy.
Being a normal Yelper, a few weeks ago I made an appointment because i am tired of acne. I had my appointment with Joe Gorelick and I was very pleased because the information and prescriptions really cleared me up. He understood what I was going through and how important good skin is to me. I definitely will return for a second visit.
Also, it was my lunch break, so the first visit fit perfectly in my lunch hour.
This place is the best! They helped clear my skin in a matter of days. I have also referred several of my friends and family and they all have similar stories. I highly recommend Age-Defying Dermatology, they are miracle workers!
I have had problems with redness and little bumps on my face and was so fed up. A friend who works at Age Defy, DOREEN, recommended me to come. I met with Dr. Joe and he was super nice and open about my face. He gave me a quick check up and recommended what i need to and my face has surely gotten better. I also go to HANNAH, an aesthetician, and she is great, nice, and patient . My whole experience there has been great and I am really glad i go.
I've been to Age-Defy Dermatology several times when Dr. David Harris worked there. He was great. He really took the time to listen to my concerns and gave me some very helpful advice and prescriptions. He even helped my skin completely heal after suffering from a chemical burn (after going for waxing at Pavia Day Spa). My insurance, an HMO, was not accepted here, unfortunately, so I had to pay out of pocket. However, I referred my mom here, and she has a PPO, and hers was accepted. After Dr. Harris retired, I saw Joe (I think he's an NP?) twice, and he was equally competent. I never felt like products were pushed on me. After asking Dr. Harris about how to treat my oily skin, I did buy the Revercel Perfect Glycolic Toner, which is AMAZING. I've been using it for years and love it.
hands down the best dermatology center ever! i have been struggling with acne problems forever! i was referred to joe who is super funny and has an amazing assistant named gigi (dynamic duo!) who then referred me to hannah, the best esthetician ever. she's so gentle but gets the job done! i have now referred at least 5 more friends who now all go to hannah & swears by her! my skin is in the best condition that it has ever been!!!!!!!!!! staff is extremely friendly & helpful.
You know how there are certain things that inspire rabid loyalty--like bands, sports teams, pubs? This is how I feel about my experiences at Age-Defy. I've officially drunk the Kool Aid when it comes to Age-Defy. I can't speak for the "cosmetic" side of the Cosmetic Dermatology, but the traditional dermatology is fantastic. I tend to be anxious about doctor-visits and the professionalism and courtesy of the staff at Age-Defy have always made me feel comfortable.
*I first came to the office concerned about rosacea and Joe G. (can't remember his last name) was professional but still personable. He listened to my concerns and recommended a conservative approach (which I appreciated) and reassured me that we would work together to find a solution if our first efforts didn't work, which they did:)
*I have since returned concerned about a few moles and for an annual skin check and again, Joe and his assistance's professionalism and caring was outstanding. I cannot say enough about his work--he is thorough and conservative without wasting your time but still covering all bases.
*It is a cosmetic dermatologist office, which you'll notice by some of the spa-like touches. At first it freaked me out a little since I was interested in medical dermatology and not plastic surgery but it became clear immediately that nobody was going to ask me about cosmetic procedures or sell me anything.
Again, I can't speak for the facials or restalyne/botox but I would recommend Joe to mother.
