I'm still bummed that this place has such bad feedback. The owners really have to pay attention to this, it's just uncalled for, especially when their doorman sexually harrasses the customers (YES! I read that review and was appalled that nothing came of it....really bad form). How many bad reviews does one need to GET A CLUE???
This restaurant is visually gorgeous, and every time I've been here the food was fine....a couple of times VERY good. If you are going to run a tequila bar, and serve mexican food you better know what you're doing. There are too many Angelenos who will have no problem calling you out for sub-par service and cuisine. Come-on owners, your sports bar next door is a success, so what's up with Agave? Get your act together, hire a manager who really knows how to run a restaurant, and turn this place into a real hangout. This will be my very last review on this place until things change for the better.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Somehow I ended up here for drinks and ended up ordering food. Agave has not removed all references to the business formerly at this address, so you will still find a sign for Cubre Libre parking.
The food is mediocre, I ordered the Pollo con chili verde. The atmosphere is not my scene, and the atmosphere changed loudly at 10:15 when the DJ started his set. I think people had come for the music, but being there with a group of friends for conversation we soon left.
If you are a die hard tequila fan, they do have a long list of tequila. -

We ducked in here for a lazy afternoon cocktail before heading to the the theater across the street. I should have canceled our drink orders the second I caught the bartender looking at the menu to figure out how to make our drinks.
Look, even I can make a bloody mary without having to look at a recipe. The other drink was a Michelada. If you're touting yourself as a tequila bar that sells other cocktails of my Mexican peoples, then get bartenders who know how to make the drinks on your menu. It's not that hard. The bloody mary tasted more of tomato than liquor (and it was tiny for the price) and the michelda was just gross. Totally overpriced.
I've never left a bar wishing I would have just ordered a tequila shot instead. -

GROSSS!! why can't we give zero stars?
First it takes close to an hour 30 for delivery...and they forgot my soda
Ugh I tried their tortilla soup (not horrible) but their ribs and huanchinango are comparable to the makings of a high school home ec. class. On top of that their red rice is dry as hell and doesn't taste right.
Their flan is dense and has the texture of hard jell-o. It supposedly was supposed to come with pineapple salsa on top, but came as a huge slice of pineapple with inedible parts and all.
What a disappointment and waste of money. -

I like the Agave Tequila House. It's nice enough to take a casual date, and they offer a lot of different tequilas, a few mescals, great chips and guacamole, and even $8 shrimp fajitas. Not bad right?
The only thing that bugged me about this place is that I didn't meet anyone who really knew anything about tequila. The bartender seemed to be pretty green. I've been to a lot of other places, such as Malo in Silver Lake or the Association downtown, where the bartenders seemed to know exactly what to recommend and knew how to talk about tequila. And, If you want to be an authentic tequila house, you have to serve sangrita. Period. Hopefully they will do this sometime soon. http://en.wikipedia.or...
If you are looking for a place to have a margarita and watch the laker game, this is a great option. At the bar there is a big flatscreen. And if you want more options, the restaurant is right next door to a sports bar. Since they have the same owner, you can literally walk next door without going outside. They are connected in the back. Kinda cool.
I will probably go back and might even take my pet donkey that I recently adopted in Mexico. I was drunk on a mountaintop calling out for more tequila, much like these guys who are on a mountaintop calling out for ricola, http://www.youtube.com... when he appeared and asked me to adopt him. I told him no at first but he kept insisting. Somehow that whole moment was caught on video, http://www.youtube.com... so you can see for yourself why I feel so blessed. -

What's up with all the haters? I love this place. First of all their margaritas are awesome, even better than they were when I last visited 2 months ago (stronger & there is some delcious ingredient that I can't put my finger on).
We had the calamari appetizer which was really delicious with this creamy sauce on the side. Then we had the fajitas which I swear was double the portion of chicken than I've gotten anywhere else. It came with rice and beans and with all those veggies (cooked perfectly) was a hearty meal.
What I really love there are the nachos. They are crazy good but we were so full after that.
I think the place is really beautiful inside, great for a romantic date or a great girls night out. And they have A HUGE projector which projects sporting events so there's something for the guys too. -

I love tequila. I've been to the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico three times. I've hosted several tequila tastings for friends.
I hate this place. So much in fact that I'm yelping from the table for the first time ever.
I was intrigued when my friend decided to have his birthday party here. I think that many people underapreciate tequila because of bad experiences with tequila mixto.
I ordered a flight of gran centenario, a negra modelo draft, and some nachos. The nachos came in five. The beer in fifteen. The tequilas came after 40 minutes. Of course, 5 minutes after it finally arrived, the bartender told me that he replaced the centenario reposado with a "hibuscus-infused" tequila. How do you not have centenario reposado (my favorite tequila). Who drinks hibiscus infused tequila? The guy just tried to take it away while I was typing this review. It wasn't even done yet.
The previous tenants had a shelf life of about a year. I'm not expecting this place to last that long.
Tequileros/as: avoid this place at all costs. -

Came here the other night for a quick snack while barhopping. Surprisingly inexpensive and the food was decent for the price, got a steak quesedilla.....
There was too much lime juice in the guacamole though.
The Modela was great though. -

I love tequila. I love tequila so much that I keep coming to this place because it has it. Other than that, there isn't much to write about. The service here isn't that great, the drinks are watered down, and the food here is hit or miss.
I come here mainly out of convenience, tequila on the rocks, and the awesome jukebox. Nothing like making people listen to my drunken music selection while I get sloppy with my girlfriend. Nothing sexual. Bi-winning! -

Remember when you were young, wild and crazy?
No?
Well, come on down to Agave and relive your youth. Or if you're actually 21, this is the perfect place for you.
The crowd on Friday nights seem to be young, mixed and ready to par-tay. The DJ spins the latest top 40 hits.
Drinks are okay. I had a mojito and it wasn't too sweet. No free water. It's bottled water only which I think is rip.
Bonus, no cover. -

La Crescenta, CA
This place was worthy of 3 stars. My friend and I came for happy hour on Friday, because we had a craving for margaritas and mojitos. We sat at a table outside and ordered our drinks and got the free quesadilla that came with.
Quesadilla was good. I really liked the pico de gallo and the sauce that it came with.
The drinks were eh. Both our drinks were too sweet and you couldn't taste the flavor of the tequila. I think I'm just spoiled from having margaritas at all the DTLA bars.
I'd come back here again, because I like the street vibe of drinking on the sidewalk in Los Feliz and the free quesadilla. -

I pondered whether this was a 4-star review, but the mediocre service drops it down to a 3. But the food was really great and super reasonable. Fajitas for $7??? Seafood entrees for $12? Really?
The menu is Mexican with some great regional specialties.
We got the chicken in mole sauce and shrimp in chile verde sauce. Both were excellent - nice and spicy, well cooked, and a good portion size that left us full but not uncomfortably so. I will definitely be back. -

*FAKE MEXICAN FOOD *STUCK-UP HOST/WAITRESS *GOOD BARTENDERS *YUMMY MARGARITAS*
Not sure if it's bad management or "selective" service based on customer profiling (ie looking like trustfund-baby histper = better service) BUT the service I have received the two times I visited was HORRIBLE!
First visit I stood there with my bf waiting to be greeted, never happened so left, second time went with my gf didnt get greeted, seated our selves, STILL didnt get greeted, had to talk to the bartender (who rocked!) and finally got very slow service that lead to very very SORRY food.
I also went on Cinco de Mayo, and there was nothing de Mayo about this place besides the margaritias :( -

I was going to pass on writing a review (if you don't have anything nice to say . . .), but I wanted to make something clear: The service sucked even when it was empty! I went last week to grab a bite before trivia night at 1739. There were about four people at the bar and a handful of people in the restaurant. The staff almost equalled the customers' numbers.
It took about five minutes to get our bartender's attention. I thought he was trying to wait us out so we couldn't get the happy hour special . . . but, no, he just wasn't good at his job. Fifteen minutes later we got our drinks. The mojito was good. The jalapenos rellenos (?) was all right. We also got chips and salsa . . . the salsa was extremely chunky, large pieces of onion and tomato. Even if you just took one piece with each chip, you were soon out of salsa.
The fajitas were okay too. Overall, more of a headache than it was worth. -

I've come here late in the evening and had a decent, but pricey drink. I've come twice during Happy Hour at which time the margaritas are abominable. The last time I was there, while the bartender was making our margaritas my friend heard another guy sitting at the bar say to her "You're putting THAT in a margarita?" to which the bartender replied quite openly and for my friend to hear "Yeah, just for the Happy Hour margaritas."
Aside from being incredibly weak, the margaritas also taste pretty lousy. Both times I went it was to enjoy one outside on a hot day, but both times I was disappointed. Never again. -

THE GOOD: I was next door at the Public House and heard they had a wonderful Cucumber Jalapeno margarita and I just had to try it out! It was indeed fabulous! I had about 3! Then they made me a margarita with fresh strawberries, also super yummy! The bartenders were great but the girls working were dumb as rocks - forgetting to ask if people wanted salt, on the rocks, what type of tequila ect... pretty basic things for working at a TEQUILA BAR! I only know this because I was at the bar and every other girl who put in her order was asked these questions and kept forgetting to ask the customers. They also serve a free quesadilla, which is awesome (not the food its self since I did not try it but the fact they have free happy hour food!)
THE BAD: I was a little disappointed the margaritas were $10 and in pretty tiny glasses.
THE UGLY: When this was Cuba Libre they had an awesome ceviche, I was very disappointed they do not feature one at all now. The bartender did suggest what he thought was comparable but it was more like a tequila soaked shrimp dish served in a huge margarita glass making it impossible to eat without making a mess and no chips were served. The Guacamole also was a disappointment, way too much citrus! -

CRAP.
CInco de mayo....yeah the menu was $5 but I don't think anything but the margaritas were worth that much.
Place was dead. My friend and I were still ignored by the waitress who clearly saw us walk in and even said hi.
Finally went up to the bar and ordered food there. Bartender was nice enough to bring out our drinks.
Food never came out. My friend ordered Tostadas and I ordered Enchiladas.
Finally, our food came out. My "enchiladas" were a cold tortilla with shredded cheese that wasn't even melted and green salsa thrown on it so it looks like mexican food. My friend's tostadas were shredded chicken with something that tasted like mayo and canned jalapenos thrown on top.
ARE YOU SERIOUS WITH THIS FOOD? I'm a pretty chill person when it comes to rating restaurants but this place is a joke. It's an insult to real mexican food.
Ditched this place after 2 margaritas and a bite of a cold tortilla.
Thank you nameless bartender for saving the day with your strong margaritas. To hell with the waitress who walked around like her job was the shit.
Don't waste your time here. I'm not mexican but I'm pretty sure I can make a better enchilada!! -

The quick fix: not the best mexican food in L.A. (that's a tough field), but pretty good, decent atmosphere, and surprisingly good prices.
For some reason, I had the desire upon me to go to dinner and walk around Los Feliz (I think this had to do with a yearning for Skylight Books, but don't quote me). Grabbed the g-friend, figured we'd find a place once we got over there. I've been to most of the restaurants in the area, and they're all fine; this one was new to me, so we checked it out.
A solid choice. Now, I won't say it's got the greatest mexican food in L.A. - that's such a hard field, I won't even begin (I mean, heck, check your corner taqueria, it's probably insanely awesome); but the food was definitely good, and the portions were solid, and way, way cheaper than I would have expected - the restaurant has an atmosphere roughly equivalent to its neighbors, but prices that are half as high.
So basically, I can't say I'd drive across town to eat here, but if you're around the 'hood, it's definitely a solid choice. And hey, that's not bad in this day and age. -

Walking down the street with friends, as we're ready to call it a night & we stop because we heard some good music playing! It was coming from Agave! So we stopped in. Not a lot of people for a Sat night, but still had fun!
Drinks were strong and plenty of space to dance. DJ is pretty good on Sat night. Didn't spend the whole night there, since we got there around 12:45 but it looked like it could be a fun place to celebrate with friends. -

This place is OK but not a great vibe for hanging out.
Went to their Happy Hour during the last heat wave, hoping to enjoy some drinks and enjoy some air conditioning. Margaritas were OK. And the Happy Hour free pizza is good enough. But they had NO air conditioning running (or the AC was on at the lowest possible setting). Same was true for Public House (connected bar next door).
They were also blasting the worst country music.
Try them if you must but wait for Fall or Winter! -

The Agave Tequila House Y Cantina hasn't completed all its renovations (at least, it looks that way from the outside), but they're open for business and really excited about customers. This is already much better than its two previous incarnations--see reviews of Cuba Libre or Tiger Lily at this same location.
As the hostess and server both described, Agave Tequila House is "more about the food" with slightly lower prices. Also, judging by their menu and new name, they're all about that tasty, tasty liquor. (Since a third of my friends have developed some kind of allergy to tequila from their own poor life decisions, my dinner date pool for Agave Tequila House is limited. I don't hold it against the place, though.)
The drink menu has many more exciting options than those of its predecessors; there's an adventurous bloody-mary-type drink made with worcestershire and beer, which I wasn't brave enough to order, and a jalapeno capirinha, which has a certain metered kick (according to my lovely friend). The regular capirinha treated me just fine--as did the servers and busboys, who stopped by frequently to make sure we had everything we needed.
So, wonderful waitstaff? Tasty drinks with less of the pretension and more of the "spend your money on this because it's delicious" attitude? I'll definitely be back! -

Los Angeles, CA
This location has been so many different Cuban restaurants and sometimes it's very confusing. I have a ton of menus that were put on my door by all of them but in a way I'm happy I can still get a mojito easily...albeit no longer watermelon or mango like the good old days :(
In addition I never went to this location for the food...always the drink. Mainly because the food was sub-par when I ordered it before and I'm not sure if these are new owners or not. So $5 mojitos for happy hour with a free quesadilla - SCORE! I wasn't even hungry but it definitely hit the spot.
Our server was sweet but the only thing I thought was lame was the waitress' outfits. Really short with tall boots. I'm not really vibing on the atmosphere that's trying to accomplish but maybe it's because I'm a straight female and thinking about sex accompanying my mojitos isn't really necessary. That's something I would expect to see in WeHo or Pasadena. Let's keep Los Feliz classy. -

Owned (and connected via hallway) by the same people as 1739 Public House, and I have basically the same review. It's fine. They have a jukebox with current music. They have lots of tequila and silly drinks made of it. They have a happy hour even on weekends ($5 house margarita, sweetened with agave and not very strong, comes with a free quesadilla). Their food is large and Americanized. Service was great and we enjoyed ourselves. Seems more appropriate for Burbank than Los Feliz, but the darkness and high walled booths afford privacy so nobody see me and slander my indie cred.
There's no excuse for a nasty bathroom in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday, though. I had to practice my hovering skills most unexpectedly. -

On Saturday I stopped in here for a nightcap as the bars were nearing last call, drawn in by a sign that proclaimed a second wind Happy Hour from 11:30pm to close. For $5 I had a completely decent mojito from a friendly bartender and enjoyed some pleasant company and people watching at one of the sidewalk booths on the always hip and happening Vermont.
The worst part of the evening came when the sidewalk closed and a weirdly irritating, shaved head, neck-tattooed bouncer/host who I've also encountered next door at 1739, came around to each individual table to announce that the "patio" was closed and all drinks must be taken inside. The way he did it, leaning over our table, into our space, speaking much more loudly than necessary was so unseemly that it left a bad taste in my mouth that didn't compliment the minty freshness of my drink or the smiling friendliness of the bartenders at all. What is that guy's deal? Maybe he needs a stint on G's to Gents.
Otherwise, yes please late night happy hour. Perhaps next time I stop in before last call I will try one of their 100 varieties of tequila and, I don't know, some chips. -

Cinco De Mayo with the girlfriends...$5 menu which was fantastic.
Margaritas - pretty good, it was definitely too sweet. but I had 2 of them anyways.
Tacos - good, chicken a little too dry for my taste
Nachos - great
Chips w/ Guacamole and Pico De Gallo - AWESOME, the guac was tangy and spicy...VERY nice!
Atmosphere wasn't so bad, I'd come here again to try the regular menu. -

Came here on a whim for a friend's bday after his girlfriend forgot her ID and we couldn't get in at Happy Endings. I prefer this place much more anyway. We walk in and it's pretty dead, the bar is semi-full, but the tables are mostly all empty. That usually freaks me out, but it meant more room for us! Because they were playing pretty good music, the place wasn't a downer, because it was so empty. Loud enough to enjoy, but not have to yell. Didn't know this place was a tequila bar until we were inside, but thats my alcohol of choice, so yeah us!
We ordered shots of Corzo for a birthday toast, they have over 250 tequilas to choose from. Might have to come back for tequila tasting... then I decide to try something different and I ordered the Ginger margarita and the guys ordered a pama-rita. I love ginger usually, as long as it isn't too sweet. My margarita was way too sweet, but the waitress understood and switched mine for the pama-rita. They apparently get that a lot. But it was good, if you like a sweeter yet different tasting drink. So on to the food, I was starving, surviving mostly the whole day on a bowl of cereal, so I ordered the taquitos, black bean soup, and the flatbread pizza. it was all good, the pizza being the best. I took most of it home, but I wanted to try a few things.
I liked this place, although they only had one waitress for the whole place, she was having to run around like a scared chicken, but she was awesome. I had never heard of this place, but I liked it. -
Review from Angela O.
Yuck.
Agave made me sick somehow. Dunno if it was the tequila (doubt it), the Pomomargarita (maybe), or the food.
Delineating the yuck:
1. Tequila list: I'm not a snob but I've been to tequila-producing parts of Mexico and Agave certainly could do a better job if their intention is to provide a representative or even an adequate sample of tequilas. As it stands, Agave serves pretty much all the Herradura line, all the Cuervo line (the two of which may well be affiliated by now - hell, all the big names are probably Coors like all the average-sized brewing companies are here in the States today). There are a few independent companies represented, but only silvers and reposados. Where are my añejos?
2. Food: Bland and boring as all get-out. I had the Jalapeño Relleños (not breaded??), and a simple quesadilla (actually decent, though soggy and the server forgot the sour cream. What was surprisingly decent was their red salsa, which may have come from Cisco, but who cares). Friends had the guac (I'm allergic to avocado, I know, pity me, pity me) and the chorizo-stuffed squid (rubbery, salty).
3. Ambience: A busser finally but very willingly fixed our wobbly table. I ate with two set designers, and I enjoyed picking apart the setting with one of them. We decided to give it a B-. We thought the lighted bar didn't go with the otherwise rustic-Mexican theme, which I dig. We were a party of 5 and then eventually 6, seated near the street, and if I return I'd like to try one of the tall boy booths. The busser's attitude gleaned Agave its singular star.
4. Service: Blew. Sorry, little server girl. You're cute in your black hose and short shorts, but you can't seem to get your job straight. I blame your manager; you're the quintessential product of shitty training and I am sorry, but unless you school yourself you'll never break $100. I ordered the Lapis Platinum tequila, which you had never heard of. (Yep, that was me.) Hint: it would do you well to learn the tequilas at this tequila bar, because that was an AMAZING one, smooth, elegant, and you could recommend it with, say, the flatbread or the soup. Or by itself. No lime. It would serve you well to clear plates as people finish them so they psychologically feel safe to order more food. It would behoove you to show up once in awhile, especially as joiners arrive. What's a joiner? Ask your manager. I told you of my food allergies, you offered to put avocados on the side of the quesadilla. NO!!! I wouldn't die if the offending food touched my soggy cheese crisp, but someone else might.
5. I'm done. -

My girlfriend wanted mexican food so we decided to stop by Agave and watch the Dodger game and eat and drink. Upon arriving and seating ourselves it took a good 10 minutes before the waitress even came over.
First we were on for drinks- I ordered a margarita- no salt. My girlfriend first ordered an ice-tea, our waitress said "ya I think I saw some in the back" what? ok scratch that how about a sprite? nope,no sprite, 7-up? nope no 7-up. hmmm My girl then asks how they have a full bar but no soda the waitress who was not very bright just giggled and said "we do have water" wow..ok
For the food I ordered a simple cheese quesadilla, my girl friend ordered a bean, cheese and rice burrito with sour cream, salsa and guacamole. As we sat there we noticed another table received chips and salsa so we asked a server that walked past (because our waitress was god knows where) if chips/salsa came with the meal he said no and walked away- okay...
Our drinks come and not only was there salt on my drink (which ya I can get over- it tasted awful- think capri-sun juice box w/ copious amounts of tequila)
10-15 minutes after the drinks came another server came out with our food. The quesadilla was just SO blah,it tasted like nothing, there was barely any cheese at all on it- I mean it takes effort to screw up a tortilla and melted cheese. My girls burrito came and as she cut it in half she noticed it looked bare, opened it up and it was just beans and rice nothing else, it looked dry and lacking- she called the waitress over and the following conversation took place
my girlfriend "um- i had ordered a bean/rice/cheese burrito w/ salsa, s.cream and guacamole- this has nothing in it (opens burrito)"
waitress- "oh..ya that stuff usually comes in it"
girlfriend "okay- well can i get it like that"
waitress- "ohh"
waitress leaves
At this point we are just SO annoyed that a guy from the bar comes over and asks us what was going on- he's very apologetic and tells us that there was a new chef in the kitchen tonight.
humph. ok.
The apologetic guy from the bar took took the food off of the bill and was really cool, not his fault, but not sure how this place could possibly stay in business!

For the money you can't beat it, the food is very authentic and hits the spot. The tequila is overpriced at best and the beer now is too, you used to be able to get a pint of Modelo for 4$ but now it's $6. I was here last Saturday night and there was a full on dancefloor with a DJ ripping it up, pretty cool we really don't have anything like that in Los Feliz. This place is best on Thursday-Saturday for sure.

I miss Cuba Libre. Tonight me and a friend were in Los Feliz and I told her I was craving Cuba Libre and its mango glazed ribs. Unfortunately, Cuba Libre was no more but turned into Agave Tequila House Y Cantina (even though a huge green sign says otherwise). But hell, I love tequila and latin food so we decided to try it out. We came around 6pm to catch their happy hour and so I started my meal with a $5 margarita. It was a little watery but my second one was better. For a tequila house, the margarita was good but nothing special. I also ordered the steak fajitas which were slightly overdone. The entire entree was a little dry-- if there was some guacamole or salsa or even lime it might have helped the dish. But the waitress was really friendly and the prices reasonable. The place is good to take friends for a casual meal --especially if you like watching sports. I

I'm not a big tequila lover, but they have over 200 in stock here. It seems like a common theme amongst the handful of reviews to date is that the service here could use some work. This place has barely been open 2 months (in a recession no less), so that's not uncommon as they get their staff and bugs worked out. I came in on a Sunday night, which was slow, and sat at the bar. I found the bartender to be smart, funny, and on top of things. The food was good and reasonably priced, there's open-air seating, and the Mojitos and Margaritas hit the spot. It's a big space with a very large bar, making it great for groups who like to drink copious amounts of alcohol while eating savory Mexican food. Overall, muy bueno.

Los Angeles, CA
Have been here three times since it opened. Each time the waitstaff/bartenders have been friendly and attentive. We have tried a variety of things on the menu, all have been good. We particularly like their guacamole and fajitas. TONS of tequila, shocking I know. Staff is great at recommending something based on your preferences. Prices are definitely reasonable for the area, would even say slightly lower. Food is much better than 1739, same owners possibly, but there the focus is clearly just on the beer.
