What's to like? A lot.....
*Tequila Bar 100+ choices AND the bar staff with knowledge of their products. classic frozen margaritas are very good.
*Food - Excellent, try table side guacamole to start. Can go wrong with the Fajitas or chicken and sour cream enchiladas.
*Service - Friendly, warm, genuine, and well trained. The two male bartenders were fantastic. They knew most of the guests by name and could not have been more hospitable.
*Patio - certainly a featured attraction here and often have live music on the weekends.
Overall, great place. -

Great service, great patio, great food.
Service has been sparkling at Agave Azul both times we've been recently (our first two times). The Mole Enchiladas were fantastic as were the Tacos Al Pastor and the tableside guacamole. Definitely would recommend for your next Tex-Mex craving. Classic House Margarita (rocks) was very tasty as well. -

The best Mexican food around! No really! Nothing compares. The service is not the best but if you ask for their best server Sonya you will have the best of both worlds, she is amazing. She should get a raise! If she didnt work there it wouldnt be the same love love love her best server by far I've ever had.
If you split table side guacamole an split Fajitas the bill is under thirty at least for my family of three and we can't even finish. -

It's an awesome good time
This place is great for an afterwork happy hour.
Entertaining servers and fun patrons make this a place to come back to. -

Great patio and cantaloupe margaritas. Food is just ok. For their happy hour, in the bar only, you can get free nachos. They don't really advertise that though. The patio doesn't count as the bar.

Best tortillas anywhere! Great service and consistent, authentic Mexican cuisine. The Carrollton location is a win as well.

First visit here, at the beginning of March. After reading these reviews, I had high expectations.
We were seated immediately, and experienced very good service throughout the meal. There is a full bar and great drink selection using good tequila.
Teenaged daughter wanted chips and queso, unfortunately she found a short black hair in the cheese and lost her appetite.
I had the chips and salsa. The salsa was OK, nothing spectacular, and not spicy enough for me.
Entree....seafood enchiladas. They were good, not outstanding.
Flan for dessert....again, good-- not outstanding, but a HUGE portion for two.
I thought the food was a bit overpriced. Overall, everything fell a little short of what I was expecting, and it was not a memorable meal---except for the hair in the food. -

I was so excited when I saw that Pollo Salsa closed down and they were opening an Agave Azul in its place!
I've been frequenting Agave Azul since their original location on Frankford. When that one shut down, they opened the one in old town Carrollton on Beltline and 35.
Their tequilla bar is huge. Their margaritas (even the plain frozen house margaritas) use top shelf liquor. No awful no-brand rot gut McCormick's here! My favorite is the mango frozen margarita. It is quite sweet, but it's delicious.
The food is good, but not my favorite ever. I usually get fajitas and am always happy with them. I've branched out a couple times and have never gotten bad food.
There are more Mexican dishes on the menu than tex-mex. They do still have some enchiladas and other tex-mex standards, but they also have a lot of great dishes that you won't find at every single Mexican food place.
I love that they bring out 2 salsas with their chips.. a smoky salsa and a green salsa. I usually go with the green salsa. It can be a little bit spicier than the other one, but sometimes the smokiness is over-powering on that one.
Like I said, overall, it's an awesome restaurant. Have always had awesome service at this location and at the 'new' Carrollton location. This one has a more homey/cozy feel to it than the other one.
The only thing I really really hate about this location is that during the summer, children play in the fountain outside. They (and their parents!) treat it like their own personal waterpark. Seriously, kids show up in swim suits to play in a fountain next to a restaurant and a strip mall. What the hell? Anyway, the children can get annoying during the summer if you're on the patio. Agave Azul, mercifully, now has a sign on their door leading to patio saying, "No wet children", as they were having an issue with dripping wet children coming inside the restaurant from playing in the fountain and getting the floors and chairs all wet. -

Strange smoky tasting salsa. Sad shrimp fajitas. I think this is the kind of place that people like because it has a cute indoor/outdoor atmosphere. Won't be back.

Out with the old, and in with the new! I share the sentiments of previous reviewers...hasta luego to Pollo Salsa and bienvenido Agave Azul!
I must preface this review by saying that spending anything more than $8 on enchiladas breaks me out in a rash...and until Agave Azul I would NEVER recommend ANY of the high-priced gourmet Mexican establishments I have patronized in the past. With Mexican as cheap, authentic, and delicious as it is practically everywhere in the Dallas area, there's rarely a need to spend more than $8 on enchiladas.
However, I was SO impressed by the cuisine, presentation, and atmosphere at Agave Azul that I plan to return as often as the wallet allows.
We started off with the tableside-prepared guacamole, which was pricey at $7 but worth it...two massive avocados, each the size of a fat baking potato, were smashed with everything the cart had to offer and a BIG bowl of fresh guac was promptly in front of us. Though I have to admit, the two salsas presented with the chips were each so spectacular I reached for them just as often as the guac.
Because Mexican food is so universally excellent in the Metroplex, I often judge a restaurant by its salsa...and Agave Azul has now usurped Los Amigos in Grapevine as my Gold-medal champion in Dallas. BOTH salsas were truly stellar. Not spicy enough to make you sweat, but with deep layers of smoky spice, sweetness, and tang. Rojo served warm (which so many restaurants don't do, which is truly a travesty) and verde served room temp with terrific chips and a combination of warm corn and flour tortillas which were grand achievements of their own.
My second thermometer of a truly good Mexican restaurant is their refried beans...and while Agave Azul STILL hasn't usurped Joe T. Garcia's, it's pretty darn close. They don't have the richness that makes Joe T's beans one of the 7 deadly sins, but they come in a solid Silver by having a wonderful flavor of cumin and chili that you rarely find in normally-bland refritos.
We went conservative...I had a combo plate with a delicious tamale, an excellent chicken enchilada, and a chili relleno which I asked to be topped with mole rather than ranchero. Mole is another great way to measure a chef's talent, and it's not often on the menu in the Metroplex. Agave Azul's mole was truly outstanding...bitter, sweet, rich, smoky, tangy...all those complex flavors that just wouldn't work together in any other application. The relleno was superb...the pepper was thick-walled and al-dente rather than thin and limp like so many rellenos.
My partner actually ordered an appetizer...4 tamales each with a different sauce. I was so focused on my superb entree that I didn't taste his, but he's not normally a tamale lover, and he cleaned his plate. Our friend ordered the Pollo Poblano...a chicken breast with a poblano cream sauce...and was moaning in ecstasy the entire time.
Dessert was a sopapilla platter and their sopapillas were different than I've ever had outside of Mexico. Thick, yeasty, and bready, not crispy, light, and hollow. However, good TexMex sopapillas are a dime-a-dozen in Dallas, and to experience the fermented yeast variety so far north of the Distrito Federal was delightful. Also, they were served with agave nectar rather than honey, which was a fantastic touch.
The house margaritas, which were the only ones we tried, were tasty (if pricey at $7.50 each) but quite strong...I barely endured 3, while my dinner companions were quite toasty after 2. Their tequila selection was superb, though, and I've done tequila flights at their Carrollton location...a great way to burst all your Jose Cuervo expectations of a liquor you believe is harsh and must be taken quickly as a shot. Don't be intimidated if you don't know a thing about tequila...your bartender does, and he's not a snob about it. He'd LOVE to talk your ear off about this unique and rare liquor while you sip such complex and smooth samples you'll swear off cheap tequila shots forever.
This is pricey Mexican food...our bill topped out over $100 for 3 people (tip included). I'd never let any other Mexican restaurant get away with that, but Agave Azul has got gourmet Mexican down to an art. And with truly atmospheric patio dining so hard-to-find in our northern corner of the Metroplex, it bumped them up to 5 stars when I'd normally give them 4...ONLY because of the 1-star high-price penalty. (However, please note that you CAN get a plate of simple TexMex for under $10 here. But the rest of the menu is just too good to pass up.)
***UPDATE 1/18/11***
After FAR more visits to Agave Azul than my father would consider financially responsible, I can without hesitation say that they have surpassed my expectations on each visit. My new obsession? Their adobo. It's so incredibly, sinfully delicious that one bite will send you straight to infierno. I'd bathe in it if I could... And the flan? Don't even get me started. -

I didn't like the salsa. It was too watery. My wife says the one in Carrollton is a lot better.
The enchiladas were decent. Shouldn't be too difficult to get a beef and cheese enchilada done right. No extra points here.
The beef fajitas wasn't anything to shout about either.
Nice environment but only average food.
May RTE if I have the craving for TexMex but don't feel like driving too far. -

This place has it going on! Because of their salsa, I completely blew my diet and ate about 100 chips before my ceviche made it out of the kitchen, and I was still tempted to like my plate. If you are a fan of ceviche in all of its lime-y excellence, then look no further.
Had their house chardonnay, yuck. It was sickly sweet.
But the thing I really wanted to gush about is the FLAN. I am not a huge flan fan by any measure, but holy smokes! I have been ruined for life! Words simply can't describe, you must taste it for yourselves. Gush gush gush gush gush I am in love with a custard.Listed in: Metroplex Excursions

Agave Azul is a nicely decorated restaraunt that has alot of potential. They offer some unique flavors and flair. That being said here are some things that I experienced on our second visit last night.
We were promptly greeted at the door and the hostess escorted us towards the rear and wanted to seat us right next to the kitchen door. The place was less than half full and I really didn't want to have to fight the sound of the kitchen doors as the staff traveled from the kitchen to the dining areas. No problem, I requested a booth and was seated to a better table/booth.
The chips and two differnet salsas were immediately delivered by a smiling person. Their salsas are definatley better than most places. Nice touch.
The wait person arrived with the menus, I asked if they had any specials, her reply was "No, we just sell things at regular prices", hmmmm not really what I was asking but I understood they don't feature a dish on any given night. Ok, my wife ordered a fish taco plate and I ordered the beef fajitas. A short time later the food arrived and everything looked good. The tacos were very good with a lime flavored rice which was nice. The fish was adequate but the sides made the dish better. Everything was fresh and flavorful, worth the increased price.
The fajitas were ok, nothing special compared to other Tex-Mex places. I would like to see more than a tomato and onion cutup with a little cilantro as the pico. It was plain with no spice. The meat was tender but again light on the spices.
Overall it was a nice dinner and the food was good with the potential to be great. Will try it again and try to find their signature dish.
I wouldn't have a problem taking a group there for a dinner. -

Margaritas here are some of the best, the food is pretty good as well, and the tequila selection is down right amazing (so many choices). They have plenty of seating available inside and a great patio outside. Right next to the patio is a little water jet feature that kids are always running through and playing in. It's a fun place to unwind and enjoy some pretty decent Mexican food.

Had a super tasty late night meal here on Friday. I'd come back in a heart beat. Great margaritas, fantastic guacamole. My sis very much enjoyed her shrimp fajitas and the puerco al adobo was very tasty. The roasted corn was pretty lame and the asparagus was perfectly prepared.
I look forward to coming back here to try more. Service was very sweet and efficient. -

Not a McMexican joint!
I don't usually rate restaurants 5 stars unless i eat there, it's good, eat there again and it's even better. This place makes me want to bring everyone in the exurbs out to eat. Agave Azul has been consistently amazing! I've eaten there 5x or so since they opened April first.
I got to this spot trying to get somewhere else and being lost in flowermound is uncomfortable so i swung by. I will never forget it's location. (FM 3040 / Hebron / Roundgrove.) My girlfriend and i just recently ate there this Wednesday again and i decided to review this spot.
First thing first: Drinks. Fresh ice tea (I HAVE eaten places where it was syrup ice tea and it really bums you out.) Lime with your ice water. Sodas are served in a can. (They still do free refills.)
Serious Drinks: Margaritas on the rocks are awesome to the max! Negro Modelo on tap. (On TAP people!) Massive amounts of Tequila. Smirnoff is their well vodka.
Happy hour: The 5.50 margaritas are totally worth it in my opinion because you're getting a superior product. It's not like some places where you have to drink seven to get rid of the splitting headache the first 3 gave you. These (happy hour.) margaritas come with high quality tequila and a fantastic balance of flavor. (Not too much sweet & sour.) Also their import draft beers are like only $2.50.
Chips and Salsa: Amazing! Chips were warm and good. Two different salsas come with them, a verde and a warm red salsa. The Verde is slightly spicier than the red salsa but temperature wise much cooler. Giving really nice variety and flavors at no charge. My girlfriend griped that the salsas were too thin, but she's just being a girl. :P
Food, omg the food: Some of the best Mexican food I've had. I haven't eaten one thing that I've ordered here and said to myself, "Somewhere else has a better _____ than Agave Azul." Try the Chicken Poblano, Shrimp Tequila cream thing and the Carne Asada. If you want to play it safe, Fajitas are where it's at. Fresh tortillas (I saw the girl make them.) come with anything you want them to come with. I got some with queso and it was soul shattering.
Service: I've eaten here a bunch and have had a different waiter almost every time. They're really on top of service! I've had quite a few different waiters and taken several people out to eat here and i don't think one thing has been forgotten, or anything. Consistent service is so under-rated sometimes. I'm a pretty low maintenance customer but i eat with a high maintenance crowd. I love seeing how service can deal with them and Agave Azul passes with flying colors.
As of right now i can't even think of any cons! Well maybe other people's children. There's going to be kids anywhere that's busy though. I still feel a tiny bit guilty having a good time with my friends, being the filthy mouthed heathens that we are. But just a tiny bit. -

My husband and I bought one of the daily deals for Agave Azul and we're so happy we did! We'd never tried this place before and boy have we been missing out! I am born and raised here in TX so I know what good Tex Mex is. Hands down, Agave Azul has the best enchiladas I have ever had! Highly recommend it!! Extra bonus, they have 2 awesome hot sauces! Can't wait to go back!

I have been here two times now.. one for only drinks and once for dinner.
Delectable on each occasion.
House margaritas on the rocks with salt.. YUM! Altho, the 2nd one didn't have much ice - more room for booze - which was fine with me.
For dinner, I got the Carne Asada with Calabacitas (zucchini) and Cilantro rice. The zucchini was crazy good... and the rice was fine too - I was trying to be healthy. The Carne Asada has a citrus flavor, and very good - sort of tough, but I think that is how the meat is in general.
Also, the home made tortillas could just be a dinner in itself. So hot and fresh. The tortillas alone are a good reason to go.
Next, I will check out their lunch specials - sans margaritas :(
Stay tuned! -

I can sum up Agave Azul as a gorgeous restaurant with a nice patio and average food. I ordered a mango chicken salad that was seriously lacking mango. I would eat here again only because I enjoyed the ambiance of the place.

I have eaten dinner or had drinks at the bar of Agave Azul at least 10 times since they've opened. It is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant since moving to Dallas a year and a half ago. The house magarita is excellent and a great price at $5.50 offered till 7 M-F. The specialty Agavera margarita is the best I have ever had. Chips are always hot and fresh. The verde and warm red salsas are also the best I have ever had.
The cervich tostado and tamale appetizers are top notch. We've had so many different entrees on the menu and have found all exceptional. The stuffed chili entree with pork and raisins is unique and outstanding. Service has always been good especially Isaac at the bar. Friendly, professional and knows his tequilla. -

Love the atmosphere at night. Guitarist on patio, tiki torches, good appetizers. Not crazy about regular entrees, though. No drink refills either (lame).
