Union City, CA
This was my first Bed and Breakfast and I must say that it was a great experience. Stayed here last spring and the rooms themselves were pretty darn charming. The VIEW was just the cherry on top of a perfect sundae. My experience will probably match up close to Thu S. as we were there together the same weekend. haha.
We stayed in the Moonstone, which matched our tastes pretty well with the hardwood floors and wood furniture; very earthy. Our friends (Thus S. and hubby) stayed in the Diamond Room and it was beautifully WHITE and clean, matching it's name. There was complimentary sherry in each room... SCORE. Can't complain about free drinks in the privacy of your own room.
The mornings were the best because of the delicious breakfast (however, we only woke up in time for one of the breakfasts that weekend lol) and the beautiful view of the bay from the breakfast room. The large windows provided so much natural sunlight that would hit your skin and face as you gobbled up your meal. It was picture perfect.
And I would have to agree with Thu S. The best part of the stay would definitely have to be the night sky. Agate Cove provided blankets and chairs for their guests to sit outside at night and admire the beautiful stars in combination of the waves in the distance.
I LOVED my stay here at Agate Cove Inn and I'll definitely be coming back and I recommend this place to everyone. -

We stayed here at Agate Cove Inn over 15 years ago. We were very excited to be going back as we had a great experience the time before unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed.
We gave them 3 stars for the following reasons:
Arrival - we were greeted by Roger who was friendly however, we wanted some information about what was happening around in the area for the weekend. Sadly he had no information other than there is always something going on. We like to travel & stay in B&Bs because of the friendly atmosphere, the comforts of home, & the great breakfasts. I felt like Roger could have offered more info to us when checking in.
We thought we heard breakfast was served until 10:30, our mistake so we missed breakfast the first day. We had no idea there was an afternoon wine tasting until we read some of the reviews. Breakfast was ok, nothing special or their "signature" touch.
View - amazing views of the coast & we loved sitting outside in the comfy chairs taking it all in, watching the sunset. However, you can find these views just about anywhere up & down the coast.
Rooms- very nice & clean. Beds were comfortable & loved the sherry in the room. It was quiet, relaxing & you didn't hear the other guests.
Our next visit to Mendo we will not be staying here. For the price it needed a little extra touch & pride of ownership. -

Cute country rooms, great views, great breakfast. One of the the sweetest little places to stay when in Mendocino. They also control rentals for the amazing Bluff House across the street. If you really want a treat book a weekend there the views are beyond words, the privacy is unmatched. Worth every penny of the $400+ a night rate.

We've stayed in a lot of B&Bs on the North Coast over the years, but this was by far the best. The room was beautiful in a blue and yellow country French theme. Comfortable with a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was very private with no shared walls with other cottage rooms. There was nothing shabby or run down about it (as in so many places). The bathroom was very nice too with some nice extras (again, nothing questionable, run down or dirty). The gardens were wonderful. There was sherry in the room, along with wine glasses, microwave, fridge etc. We spend a lot of time just chilling and watching the ocean view. Breakfast was lovely and we did not have to sit with strangers (I'm not antisocial but on our rare kid free romantic weekends we like to be alone). I'll go there again!

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Agate Cove Inn has an ideal location for a weekend getaway.
The hubs and I experienced our first b&b at the Agate Cove Inn. We stayed at the Diamond Room (their most affordable room) during the last weekend in June.
The room has a very bucolic Laura Ashley feel to it with a mint green theme. There is a skylight on top of the bed and a soaking tub (no shower).
The mascot (border collie) was the sweetest, very playful and just adorable. He was running around as we were sitting by the coast looking at the sunset.
Pros:
*Beautiful grounds-the garden has a large variety of flowers and is a labor of love
*great location-great view; walking distance to town
Cons:
*although the room was very clean the linens had holes in it and the pillow looked pretty dingy under the pillow case
*jetted tub had some black things spewing out of it so it cut our bath short
*breakfast is included but the eggs benedict was overcooked
Tips:
*there is a 2 night minimum stay but if you call and they have availability they will let you stay one night
Overall, I enjoyed our first b&b experience even though I must say I'm much more of a modern cityscape/beach kind of gal. -

Mountain View, CA
I've never been a fan of B&Bs, and have always made a point to avoid them, but coming to Mendocino we weren't left with much of a choice, thus we "settled", or so we thought, on Agate Cove Inn because it was the most reasonably priced with rooms that were not uber-Victorian. (The Victorian style creeps me out big time). As soon as we drove up and saw the property, met Melody and Marina (our hosts for the weekend), and checked-in we soon realized that we found a gem of a place.
We stayed in the Diamond Room because with the all-white decor it was the most contemporary of the options. It was clean, charming, bright, and very welcoming. It also had its own private garden with patio seating. The room is stocked with a microwave, fridge, ice bucket, and all the glassware and amenities you might need in wine country. There was also complimentary Cream Sherry! BONUS!
Breakfast in the morning was very well done and all of the tables are against large bay windows with breathtaking views of the ocean bluffs. You can choose to be as chummy as you like with other guests or keep to yourself...no pressure, which I really liked.
The best part of our stay was grabbing the extra blankets they provide, bundling up on the patio chairs out front to stargaze with the sounds of the crashing waves at night. The sky is incredibly clear out here!
We will be back to Mendocino and Agate. -

My husband and I recently stayed here for part of our honeymoon. We reserved the Diamond room but when we arrived, Roger, the innkeeper, kindly upgraded us to the Obsidian room (a much more expensive suite) at no extra charge. I would suggest reserving either of the duplex cottages (Obsidian or Emerald) because of their spectacular view of the ocean and gorgeous, blooming grounds. The Obsidian room offered a king sized feather bed, fireplace, sitting area, walk-in closet, mini fridge, coffee maker, ironing board, cable tv and a beautiful bathroom equipped with a giant soaking tub and double shower.
A delicious, complimentary breakfast was served in the dining room (also had an amazing view) every morning. I think that they even post their recipes on the Agate Cove Inn Blog. There is also a small room that is open to guests 24 hours that is supplied with an ice machine, all sorts of tea, coffee, condiments and movies.
This place is both charming and lovely I would highly recommend it to anyone. The innkeepers are kind, helpful and really want to make guests feel taken care of. It is a magical place. -

It is a five star for the view, a one star for the rest of it. We are huge fans of B&B's and stay in them often when we travel. This one will not be a place we return to even though we had one of the few rooms with a great view. There is more to a B&B than a view.
The room we stayed in had, OK I'll say it, the ugliest furniture I've ever seen in a B&B. It was very cheap mismatched reproductions that felt like they were about to fall to pieces. The gas fireplace was nice and it would have been easy to make this room feel really sweet instead of cheap. The bed was comfortable, but one of the pillows had a number of feather points sticking out of it. I put that one on my husband's side and even he complained about it! He likes to brag that he can use a rolled up pair of socks for a pillow.
Sadly, the breakfasts were the worst we've ever had at a B&B. The eggs benedict was almost inedible. A very dry toasted english muffin with a 1/4 inch thick slab of cheap ham covering it and one hard rock poached egg perched on top. The sauce was not like any benedict sauce I've eaten. And the french toast the other morning was three tiny halves of a fruit bread, I guess, covered in something that did not resemble or taste like egg batter; a single sausage link accompanied it.
There was no afternoon snacks, just two dried out raisins and some crumbs sat in the serving dish the whole weekend we were there. Maybe there was afternoon wine, but we were not informed of it and when we went over at 4:30 to see if there was an afternoon offering of any kind (it gets dark by 5:00 in the winter), no one was there, no fire was burning and no food of any kind was out.
It's hard to believe that Roger and his wife are owners as other reviewers suggested. A pride of ownership is definitely lacking here. B&B's are about great breakfasts, afternoon cookies or wine, charming rooms, warm hospitality and a sense of belonging there even for a night or two. Sadly, this lacked all of these. -

We spent 3 days enjoying everything that Mendocino has to offer, which is mostly amazing views of the ocean, and the opportunity to leave the grind behind & unwind. The Agate Cove Inn is across the street from a little park that is right on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. The grounds are beautiful, the proprietors are warm & friendly, and the room we stayed in (Topaz) was well appointed and homey.
If you are looking for a great place to stay in Mendocino, I encourage you to try Agate Cove Inn. I'm confident you'll be happy with the choice & will plan to go back as we are. -

A true romantic getaway. Any room is wonderful at this inn. The grounds and views of the ocean are to live for. The restaurant is so peaceful, looking directly over the ocean, and the breakfasts are superb. you have to get in your car for downtown, but it's worth to return here.

Amazing breakfast!
The surroundings are very special, and watching the summer sun sink into the cove from one of the property's many vantage points was the highlight of our trip.
Very clean, warm and well appointed room.
There is a really friendly, relaxed vibe here. Everything we could have wanted was provided, but we never felt the overbearing presence of an 'innkeeper'.
A 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive up the road from Mendocino village.
Will definitely return. Thanks! -

Recently stayed at this B&B and it was nice. Cottages are charming but not over the top. Not all have views but the main lawn sits right on the coast with an amazing sunset view, so you don't really need the view from your room. Mendocino in January is cold, so the fireplaces in the cottages help a lot :)
The couple that runs the Inn -- Roger and Larane -- are super friendly and cook up a nice breakfast every morning. Movies and books are avaialble in the front guest lobby (including several that were filmed in Mendocino which is cool).
Location is great, just minutes drive from downtown Mendo, and the price is reasonable -- at least in the low season. -

We've stayed here 3 times since 2001. Our 1st time was also our first visit to Mendocino, so this place is just part of the 'memory bank' for this spot. And another thing that makes this Inn so special for us is that this is where we decided to get married, on the deck of our cabin, Amber. Which we think is perfect -- a fireplace, comfy bed, a door to a deck with chairs & view. What more do you need?
Just walking down to the end of the garden & sitting to watch the waves below is pastime enough for me. Maybe a cup of coffee also, which is always available ( the cookie jar used to always be full too).
The next time we came was our honeymoon. The Agate Cove is so nicely located... a few minutes into Mendo by car for dinner or walking around, but also an easy drive to Little River or Ft Bragg. And it's quiet, with adults who come for the scenery, hiking, the beauty of the place.
The last time, in 2004, we went was equally wonderful. And since that time the ownership / Innkeepers have changed, so I don't know what it's like now. But if they've kept it up & cook equally as good, I'm sure it's still great. The breakfast room is wall to wall windows looking out to the ocean.
Now that we've moved from San Diego to Ukiah, we have Mendocino only 1+ hrs drive away, so we probably won't be needing to stay here anymore. That's sad. I'll miss it. -

This is the most adorable b and b I've ever stayed inn. My husband loved the in-room fireplace and jacuzzi bath. The breakfasts prepared by the owner are outstanding- we had eggs benedict and blueberry bread pudding. Not to mention, the coastal view is breathtaking.

We LOVED this place. We came up here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and I cannot say enough good things about it. The grounds are beautiful, Roger and Laraine, the inkeepers, are so friendly and helpful, breakfast was delicious (they can accommodate any food issues you have if you let them know ahead of time). We had a nice size room (the Amber Room) and it had such a fabulous view from the deck. I wanted to steal the mattress, it was so comfortable. It had such a wonderful vibe!!! And the great thing is about this B and B is the spacious dining room...it overlooks the ocean and there are several tables...you can join another couple, or you can sit on your own (I'm not always the friendliest person in the morning, so I appreciate having a little space on vacation :) .
Agate Cove Inn feels so spacious; you could spend time just being there...sitting on the swing, hanging out in the hammock, going across the street to sit on the benches that overlook the cliff. It's lovely. The town of Mendocino is close by as are other wonderful areas to see. It was the perfect getaway. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!!!
RUN, don't walk, to stay at Agate Cove Inn!!! A yummy weekend, worth every penny!!!!! -

If you want a beautiful, romantic, quiet get-away, this is a superb B&B. Each cabin is different, so pick accordingly. Jetted tubs are our preference, and the gas stove in every cabin keeps everything cozy. We're not Victorian lovers of frills and lace, so Agate Cove has the decor we prefer: comfortable, casual, but not fussy or cluttered.
Location is 1 mile north of the town of Mendocino, walkable or fast drive. Easy access to freeway, but the rooms are well insulated and very quiet, no highway noise to bother you.
Breakfasts are very good and light, which we appreciate because Mendo is one of our favorite eating towns, so we eat out twice a day when there.
One minus: the Net never seems to work in the cabins. The signal is strong in the main house, but we can never connect from our cabins (we've stayed twice in 2010). Also, no AT&T cell service..which gives you the perfect excuse to remain unconnected to the corporate world, LOL! -

My wife and I went and stayed a few weeks ago and we loved it. The room was great. It was cozy, warm and inviting with plenty of space. The owners are very friendly and the morning breakfasts were fab!! We are already planning to go back soon.

The Agate Cove Inn is exactly as it advertises to be; the website shows the farmhouse and the cottages beautifully, and when we got there, everything was as we expected. It's a gem--quiet, beautiful gardens, beautifully decorated room with all sorts of nice little touches (i.e. fresh flowers from the garden; complementary sherry; an honor bar with snacks/drinks fairly priced; 24 hour guest services room with coffee/tea, videos, books). The bathroom was huge--the soaking tub and bath goodies alone made me love the place :) The innkeepers are very hospitable but respect your privacy--and the breakfasts every morning are gourmet. Beautiful place.

Our stay was in May 2009
The gardens and views from the room and the gardens are so beautiful! The room is a little fussy, but not as bad as some B&B's can be. There was significant road noise as other posters have said. Route one is right behind the cottages. Fortunately it did stop in the night, so really it did not actual interupt any of our sleep. You must drive to town, the walk would be too much and I had hoped to ride our bikes into town, but the road is busy and there is no shoulder and it's quite a climb. I did walk to the headlands one night, but it was not pleasant along the road. The featherbed topper bothered my back a little. Our room had a frig, microwave, tv and good internet service. We had no verizon signal there. Breakfast was ok, the choice is fairly limited each day and they tended to be a little fancy - things like gingerbread pancakes which were OK, but I would have preferred regular plain pancakes. Sort of like being at your mom's and you feel like you have to eat what has been put in front of you. Our cottage was very clean and had a lovely deck area with a view of the gardens and headlands. This same view could been seen from our bed - very romantic. A lovely dog is in residence and another was visiting with a local tradesman. There is a hot tub with awesome views of the headlands. The bathroom was enormous, but the soaps provided were wierd and I had trouble shaving in the shower (no ledge or seat). -

A perfect getaway from San Francisco. Beautiful lodging, convenient parking, excellent breakfast, welcoming staff...and a spectacular view of the ocean in Mendocino--probably the best view we saw all trip long. We could hardly bring ourselves to leave the site!! Sunset from the front lawn was breathtaking! We did not hear noise from the road as one other reviewer said, but we could hear the waves when it was very quiet!
The walk to town is nice, although you might want to drive if shopping is on your itinerary!
Add the wonderful restaurants in the area and one could not find a more restful, romantic spot!
