Pretty much any special occasion that involves my mom is celebrated at The Brown Palace. It always means a delightful afternoon full of wonderful teas, tasty Kir Royales and a tasty selection of the normal tea accoutrements. The service is professional and elegant, and the tea room manager is gracious and very accommodating.
We managed to get reservations for the holiday tea service (quick tip: call now if you want a good date next December!!). The already beautiful lobby was decked out in stunning yet tasteful Christmas decor, and the tea cakes were flavored with traditional Christmas flavors such as gingerbread, eggnog and mince.
This is really such a fun, affordable treat and really a must do! -

Denver, CO
We went here the day after Christmas for tea and champagne, and to be honest it didn't meet my expectations sadly.
The chairs set up at our table (more like a low coffee table) was quite bizarre. Was this our punishment for asking to be sat away from the piano since we all ruined our hearing decades ago and therefore didn't want to be screaming 'WHAT?' in the Brown Palace? I ended up sitting in a huge arm chair my dad and his wife were on a couch (of completely different height) and my sister was about 2 feet away from the coffee table we were all sharing because her chair was a very low and huge lounger. So this is awkward for everyone...... let me do a yoga pose/stretch to reach my tea please.....
Then came the service -something that for any other place in the Brown Palace is seamless. Well not here, we were forgotten about multiple times and actually had to embarrassingly flag someone down. (something believe me we felt like idiots doing - but we had been waiting forever!) Come to think of it... maybe we weren't even really a regular table and that's why the confusion was there? Either way it was unfair.
The tea tray of snacks was delicious however and the 'never-ending' aspect of it was great especially since the sandwiches were WAY too good.
After we had finished snacking and chatting I headed over to the bathrooms to freshen up. I was wearing something very nice - Christmas & Brown Palace worthy. Albeit all black because well that's my style and I suppose a tiny portion of my heavily tattooed arm must of peaked out because a lady in the powder room took it upon herself to scoff and and literally chastise me for my 'appearance'!
I was so mortified I couldn't even tell my family what happened, because I didn't want to cause further embarrassment for us. Believe me I wanted to love tea here - we are all nice, sophisticated and well-mannered people, but or 'set-up' and apparently my appearance made us, me especially feel completely unwelcome and for me that was hurtful.
I might give it another try, but I wouldn't go during the holidays and I'd make sure if I saw that lady in the powder room I'd mention something about her wrinkles - no wait I'm not that curt. -

I had an amazing tea with my mother, sister and soon to be Mother and Sister-in-law. We had planned tea for two days before my wedding and it was the perfect relaxing setting to calm everyone's nerves.
Everything was well put together form the tea choices to the food. Most people know that the Brown Palace provides amazing service in the hotel but the tea room gives service that is just as legendary.
They were wonderful from the reservation to the day of, making sure that all of our dietary needs were met. My mother and I are gluten free and the scones and sandwiches they served to us were no less than amazing. Better than I can bake or buy at a specialty shop.
The selection of tea wasn't too large or too small, it was well thought out for the food offered and the servers offered their personal recommendations (all of which were spot on and wonderful)
We were charmed by the personable service, beautiful setting and overall experience.
My mother and I have already planned our next trip back. -

Step into a fairy tale! The Brown Palace's tea room is decedent and delicious! Enjoy a glass of champagne and some neatly presented sandwiches and cookies. Perfect light food to go with a nice cup of tea! Anyone you take here will feel special, from a romantic afternoon to a princess birthday party with kids or just an afternoon tea with your mum. I love seeing little girls all dressed up to go here, it really warms my heart. On the plus side you too can get dressed up! I can wear the most extravagant cocktail dresses here and no one bats an eyelid. Lovely.
Also they just put up their christmas decorations, go check it out!

I've been out to tea at several places in the Denver greater area, and this is hands down my favorite. If you want to feel spoiled, like you escaped real life for an afternoon, and have some excellent tea and food, this is your tea place! I recommend going all out with what I think they called the Royal Tea, where you start your afternoon with a glass of champagne, and a truffle! What better way to start anything? :)
Then they bring you out your tea, and a tower of deliciousness. There are scones, jam, devonshire cream, usually 3-4 different kinds of sandwiches, and 3-4 different desserts (see pictures) These change occasionally, and you can call ahead with any special recommendations (if someone is a vegetarian, etc.)
This is a super fun way to catch up with a friend, mother, aunt, sister, or with your daughter or niece. If you have visitors from out of town, this is a memorable experience for them to have in Denver. You can also grab a brochure after tea on the history of the Brown Palace, and walk around afterwards. I've had family and friends often refer to the afternoon we spent there wistfully after they have flown home.
You do need to make a reservation, they rarely have walk in room (is my understanding). Feel free to walk around and take pictures in the hotel, and give yourself 1.5 - 3 hours to enjoy the experience.
My only complaint would be that every once in awhile I get a snotty server, but usually they are just fine. -

Tea Time at the Brown Palace Hotel takes place in the grand setting of this beautiful historic hotel lobby. The tea menu gave two choices...one tea without champagne and a more expensive option with champagne in addition to tea.
The selection of tea includes traditional teas and several herbal options. The highlight of the tea for me was the freshly baked scones served with Devonshire cream. The three tiered platter also included three different types of petit sandwiches and a top layer of small dessert items.
The service was impeccable. Our waitress came by several times to top off the teapot and make sure everything was alright. We also enjoyed the piano player whose selections of popular showtime and Broadway tunes with his own unique interpretation were a delight to listen to.
A delightful experience & highly recommended. Also, much less expensive that options in several comparable locations across the country which can be as high as $75 per person. -

Reminds of a relaxing afternoon in London, even though I've never been there.
Scones are ok, best curry egg salad sandwich. Left over food can be taken home. -

I'm probably losing some man points by admitting to liking high tea so much, but this was awesome.
Great tea (of course), fantastic service with no utensil out of line, and unbelievable scones and sandwiches. I've since had tea at some classy places (including the Peninsula in Hong Kong) and the Brown Palace is by far the best for food.
Worth the splurge - come hungry! -

Completely old school, yet elegant.
I was here in early December and stopped in for a glass of wine and a cheese plate. The service was stellar! The wine list included bottles from all over the map.
The cheese plate however was a bit disappointing. Not super creative and not very exciting. The saving grace is the ambiance and service. -

I didn't know what to expect coming here. I went to tea with my friend for her Grandmother's birthday. I knew I had to dress up, which was exciting for me. I love being girly and the situation doesn't present itself often enough.
As soon as we stepped inside I was in awe. I'm a sucker for beautiful architecture and it was like stepping into another world far, far away from Denver. The tea was delicious (I sampled several, they were all wonderful). The food was also very good and very addicting. You wouldn't think tea sandwiches and mini desserts would fill you up but they definitely do.
I would definitely come back for a special occasion. Anybody having a bridal shower? I recommned this place for a classy, intimate and sophisticated shower. -

Such a wonderful special-occasion spot! But only if you like tea, bubbly, finger sandwiches and the company of some close friends. I haven't had formal tea in other tea rooms (yet) so I can't compare, but this experience is definitely about enjoying the scene, the beautiful interior of the Brown Palace Hotel, and enjoying some tasty bites. And the tea is, of course, strong and delicious.
This was my third visit in just as many years, and it never has never failed to disappoint. The pace is definitely relaxed, so prepare to spend at least an hour on your tea experience. I also find it to be a fascinating people-watching experience as well, with little girls celebrating confirmations, grandmas celebrating their birthdays, peeps like me celebrating special occasions, and there always seems to be a wedding reception or big event going on when I've visited. I'm a big fan of living vicariously through others, so this works for me. But just be prepared for potential large crowds in the lobby.
A couple notes, since I'm into that:
- Do yourself a favor and sneak into the restrooms at Ellyngton's.
- Don't be afraid to ask them to move you. They seated my party right next to the piano, which made it impossible to hear one another. Later on they brought out a harp player, which was lovely, but just be aware you might have a hard time conversating if you're seated next to the music.
- For folks with nut allergies, they will happily make you a substitute plate. One of my friends got to nosh on a plate filled with mounds of fresh fruit, melon with proscuitto and gigantic shrimp.
- Don't be afraid to ask for a to-go box! This is an expensive treat, so take those goodies home with you if you don't finish them.Listed in: Are you visiting me?, Coffee, tea, and caffeinated…, Five Fabulous Stars, Local Gifting, Splurge-Worthy

If I had to describe the high tea at the Brown Palace in one word it would be grand.
The beautiful lobby of the Palace hosts the afternoon tea. As you sit beneath the beautiful stained glass ceiling you are serenaded by the classical piano close by. The tables are set with the finniest china and silver. And the service is attentive and knowledgeable about all things tea! They make you feel welcome and taken care of, even if high tea isn't something you do every day.
There are several types of tea service you can chose from, but we chose the signature tea. Each of the guests are brought their own pot of tea and a tiered server is brought out for the table filled with desserts, finger sandwiches and scones.
The scones are out of this world good and coupled with the Devonshire Cream they are a sinful indulgence. The finger sandwiches are just good fun. Who knew a cucumber sandwich could be so delish? And finally, the pastries are mini sugary delights. I loved the lemon lavender petit fours! They were beautiful and tasty.
All in all it was a wonderful experience. I would go back in a heartbeat! Go for a special occasion and get your tea on!Listed in: JJ's ROTDs

An experience that I recommend to everyone! I went there for the first time last week to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom and sister and we had a great time! The ambiance of having tea in the middle of this beautiful hotel is worth the money by itself. The wait staff was so professional and wonderful, we definitely felt pampered and like the upper crust of society (which we definitely are not). The tea was great and they kept filling up our little pots so we never ran out. Our tea came with scones (with Devonshire cream and strawberry jam, of course), finger sandwiches, and an assortment of pastries. I would have to say that the sandwiches were to die for!!! Oh my god, they were so good!!! The scone and desserts were nothing to scoff at either! The desserts were so pretty, they were almost to good to eat...almost :).
It is hard for words to describe how great of a time we had! And while $30 for tea, pastries, and sandwiches might seem like a lot, the location and wait staff definitely add a lot of value to the High Tea that you won't get at other places. I definitely can't wait to go back to the Brown Palace for tea again!Listed in: Non-FoCo Eats

I wanted to give it 4 or even 5 stars, but it isn't really. The setting is great and the tea was wonderful. They had a great selection of tea.
Downside:
While enjoying the spa,we had a little problem. I told them we had a tea reservation thinking that we might get a little kick-back but no, no small discount, no compensation of any kind. If they where really a great full service property there would have been a small something to make up for the problem that we had during our time in the spa.
Also when serving the tea our waitress spilled it and didn't clean it up. Nor did they bring us sugar. We had to wave her down and ask her to bring napkins for the spill and sugar. It wasn't that busy either. She was just hanging in the tea station talking to another employee.
I don't know spending $38 per person for great tea and service and only getting half of it. Not really as great as I was hoping for. The piano player was great though. -

Great tea, but be warned: If you're trying to reserve in late November through January, they start taking reservations each year on January 2nd! At 7am!! And apparently, they fill up some days (weekends and such) in the first few hours! So call ahead if you're in Denver for the holidays, and hope you get lucky, I guess.
Otherwise, it's fantastic year-round; weekends are usually pretty busy, so we like to drop in on weekdays. John Kite is always a pleasure on the piano, and the harpist adds some very nice mood to the event as well. I'm looking forward to my neice growing a couple years older so I can take her as well, and let her enjoy a fun time at tea with us too! She's a bit young to appreciate it for now though...
Prices are good, about $30-$40 per person after tax, although the holidays are more expensive. That said, the "tiny sandwiches and scones" that I thought about the first time I saw them were amazingly filling. Maybe that's because I couldn't stop eating the things, and darn near took a few fingers off while chowing down! Yes, they are that good. No, I'm not ashamed of my rampant gluttony! -

My only dining experience at The Brown Palace has been for a breakfast business meeting. The atmosphere was very warm and I enjoyed the old world feel of the place.
The service was outstanding - spot on attentive without hovering and being annoying.
I had a simple breakfast of eggs with potatos, juice and coffee. The food was good but for the price it could have been better. -

One of my favorite place to have tea in Denver! It's got everything: lovely tea, delicious food, gorgeous decor, and delightful service! I've had tea here several times over the past few years and it's really the place to go when you want to give yourself a treat! Very fancy, I always make sure to wear my cutest dresses, it gets me into the experience that much more!
The service here is lovely, the servers are so nice! We've had the same gal a few times and she remembers us each time! (I imagine our mode of dress makes that easier than usual but still, it's appreciated!) They often come by to check up and aren't obtrusive in the least, often filling up my tea pot! Also, I love the bottomless sandwiches and an additional plate of scones is very reasonable if you are super hungry!
There are a few very slight cons: I'd like more selection as far as teas go! I prefer black tea and they only have 5 different ones to choose from! I have tried them all and enjoy them very much but it makes repeat trips not as frequent as they could be! The next con is probably very personal preference, but I'd like to see them change their menu a bit more, especially the desserts! Sandwiches change out quite frequently although I've been there so many times, I've probably tried all of them at least once! The desserts always seem to be the same, minus a change out or two! At least the scones are always different and they are delicious! Also, I have yet to go during the holiday season when they have all the awesome decoration up! Apparently you need to book that almost a year in advance! Maybe if I call now, I can get a reservation?! Ha!Listed in: Best Spots for Elegant Tea

High Tea at the Brown Palace is definitely a treat. This is the perfect place to take your mother or grandmother, or a good friend. Be prepared to sit all afternoon, because you should savor this! The pastries and finger sandwiches are really quite good, and the Devonshire cream is PERFECT. They will bring you seconds (and thirds) of whatever you want, so be sure to eat lots of chocolate goodies (with the chocolate platter).
The service here is AMAZING, they are completely not in your face, but ALWAYS around if you need anything. The atmosphere is beautiful, especially if you are into old hotels.
This is a great place to go for a nice afternoon, but I warn you: it is addicting. :)Listed in: Favorite places in Denver

Good, but honestly, I like Dushanbe better.
I have never been to the Brown Palace so this was a treat. I really liked the atmosphere.
The tea was tasty. I got the Brown Palace black tea. I liked the scones and sandwiches but the cakes were just okay.
The part that bothered me was that our server seemed to forget about us. I had to get up and go find him because I had been out of water for most of our visit. I couldn't find him and someone else helped us.
It was a nice afternoon with my friend, but nothing to write home about.Listed in: Wedding Help

I feel like a pariah here, but I wasn't blown away. Maybe my expectations were too high. I really wanted to love this place. The company I went with was fantastic, the lobby is beautifully appointed, and the service was impeccable.
However, I felt like I paid way too much for what I got. Finger sandwiches, which were good, but not the best I've ever eaten. A few of the petit fours were just foul, and the scones were about what I'd expect from anywhere. Also, the hotel was undergoing remodeling and it was freaking loud in the lobby.
Maybe I caught them on an off day, but I don't feel the need to go back anytime soon, particularly if I'm paying. -

This is a place I want all my visitors to experience. Too bad I'm rarely so on the ball that I'll make a reservation in time!
The tea is spectacular, the scones delish and they claim their Devonshire cream is brought in ... from England. Yum. It's kind of a pricey outing, and you don't want to go in looking like a slob, but it's wonderful. The servers rarely bother you (what's to ask except for more hot water?), so you can carry on great conversations there. I love it. -

Buena Park, CA
I love love love that my friends brought me here. This was the best tea experience I've had, not to mention the best scones I've ever eaten.
The tea room is located right in the middle of the hotel's lobby, great marketing by the way. What better way to get people to want to pay $31 for tea than to have them watch other people enjoying it.
I'm not sure if it was the hotel scenery, the lighting, or the actual silverware they serve the tea with...but I felt like royalty for an hour. They have a very nice selection of quality teas for anyone's palate. We also got blueberry and buttermilk scones, to die for with jam. They also served those crustless sandwiches- roast beef, cucumber, and shrimp salad. I still remember what that roast beef tastes like. And finally we had a variety of chocolate cakes, cookies, and other desserts.
The service is great and oh so friendly. The price is on the steeper side but it is the experience you're paying for on top of the food. Bring the mom here, she would LOVE it for sure. -

Fabulous.
The ultimate spot for ladies of all ages to have a special afternoon - for any occasion. It's class all the way.
Piano; harpist; tiered tray with delightful scones, sandwiches and sweet treats; delicious tea and the ultimate of service.
Be proactive about reservations, you need to book in advance (the holidays is particularly dramatic). You can use open table, but for larger parties or specific requests give them a call. -

It was a great experience and we really enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere is beautiful, and while it is expensive to have tea there, it was worth it in that regard. The staff was welcoming and accommodating. The tea tasted amazing. The scones and Devonshire cream were delicious. The harp music was beautiful. The only imperfect thing was the scarcity of servers. Our server never returned to check on how we were doing. I didn't even see her in the vicinity. Long after we'd finished all of our tea and food, we couldn't find anyone to bring us our bill. We had to take our time putting our coats on and looking around and finally found someone else's server to give the credit card to. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the tea and food.

Simply fabulous. I wish we had had more time to actually sit for high tea and partake in the seemingly elegant and classy experience, but we were leaving later that day for the airport and stopped by just because this landmark is a must. The hotel itself is gorgeous and from what we observed and heard, it is actually something to try once at least. Hopefully next time.

In the midst of a weekend of happy hours and baseball games, a girlfriend and I took an afternoon off for high tea. I'll give the disclaimer that neither of us are the type that generally eat little miniature sandwiches and drink tea, but the Brown Palace is amazingly beautiful and classy without being overly stuffy. Our server was happy to explain the different "tea options" for us novices, and since we were there more for the atmosphere than the food, she offered to let us split one tray of tasty treats with two pots of tea and two glasses of champagne- lovely, indeed!

My friends and I celebrated another friend's daughter's 8th birthday here. It's a great place for a leisurely afternoon with your favorite people. We started off with mimosas and jasmine and some sort of berry tea. Yum! The finger sandwiches and pastries were all light and delicate. My favorite as the little pastry spoons filled with some sort of cream and blueberry preserves. The 8 year old had a great time and she loved hearing about the history of the hotel as well as the ghost stories and list of famous visitors. The pianist was really sweet and dedicated a song to the birthday girl. Will definitely bring friends here for special occasions.

Come for the atmosphere of the harp music and old wood. Stay for the delightful sandwiches and petit-fors. An excellent choice for a celebration or a romantic date. The harpist can even make the usual Happy Birthday seem less cliche. The teas are gorgeous and they will keep refilling the pot so that you can extract all the possible flavors. Great to people watch.

This was the only real negative experence during our stay at the Brown, and it wasnt all that negative. Still, I've been to many high teas, and the quality of food at the Brown did not justify the price. The scones were good, and they gave plenty of Devonshire cream (thank you!), but the sandwiches were very, very boring. The sweets were boring, too, and a bit homogenous. I did appreciate the home made truffles at the end. Service was very good. All in all, not worth almost $40/per person. When I stay at the Brown again, I'll skip high tea.

This is the quintessential Denver tea room for any special occasion or when you just feel like treating yourself. My friends and I embrace the moment and dress in our finest including hats. We know it will be an afternoon of genteel conversation and nibbling finger sandwiches and petit fours while drinking champagne cocktails and Jasmine tea. A harpist plays soft music in the background and people watching is at its best. As mentioned in the other reviews, the lobby is spectacular. You get a sense of what Molly Brown and her friends felt like when they spent the afternoon in the Brown.

I met two friends for tea at the Brown Palace on Wednesday. If you go at 2:00 on Wednesday, you can take a free tour of the hotel. If you're a middle-aged Beatles fan like me, you'll see where they stayed when they played Denver. We also got to go into the Presidential Suite that has been renamed for Barack Obama until the end of the DNC. The tour lasted about an hour, after which we sat down to tea. A night in the suite will set you back $1,200.
The tea menu lists four different types of teas. One is a traditional scones, sandwiches and pastries tea for $27. Another is the same as the traditional with the addition of a glass of champagne for $32 (that's the one I had). A third focuses on pastries containing chocolate, and...well...I don't remember the details of the fourth one.
As for tea, I ordered the Brown Palace blend, which was excellent. The food was pretty and tasted good. We ate buttermilk and cherry almond scones--with clotted cream and jam of course; shrimp salad, ham salad, and cucumber/cream cheese sandwiches; and five little assorted pastries. The woman who served us was very friendly and attentive and kept our pots filled with hot water. Although we did not come in until 3:30 and sat well into the start of cocktail hour, we never felt rushed to leave.
All in all, this is what I expected from tea at the Brown Palace, and I was not disappointed. -

One can read the many positive reviews about High Tea at the Brown Palace and they are all true-but as you are reading this review, make your reservatons now for 2009 especially during any holiday or mothers day as they are booked up quickly.
4PM reservations were right on time and the piano player, John Kite, a local legend, starting playing holiday music as we were seated. Although a bit noisy at times, this elegant experience should be enjoyed once in your life-high victorian chairs, professional staff, and one is made to feel like a mulit millionare for one evening. Our waitress explained clearly our choice of teas and food options-I choose the Jasmine Tea, and we both ordered the standard fare-tea sandwiches (they did veggie style including spicy fish), incredible maple walnut scones, and a desert tray to die for all while you are sipping splits of Chandon champagne. The deserts included a chocolate crust moose tart off the charts, a raspberry moose tart, and a lemon puff with such a perfect crust that it litteraly dissolved on our lips.
Yes, its quite the expensive evening, but you must try high tea once! Save this for your anniversary, holiday, birthday, but book now! -

This is the first time I had High Tea. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. The tea was excellent, the company was the best and the service was great too. The scones and finger sandwiches were very tasty, and the pastries you ordered were off the hook. I would highly recommend tea anytime you get a chance. But, if you're in the Denver, CO vicinity i suggest that you do it at the Historic Brown Palace Hotel!!!

This is only my second high tea anywhere, and fancier than the first, so perhaps I'm too easily impressed, no claims on being the NYT food critic after all... but this was delightful. I was part of a group of four, two adults and two kids and other than a brief, quiet argument over whether or not one child was going to try the seafood salad sammiches [All kids go through finicky stages at some point, I ate the spare in the end, just as good as my first] everything went smoothly.
Definitely go with at least one other person if it's your first time so one can order the chocolate assortment and one the fruit, then share. The little treats are unique and delicious, though if I went a second time [and I mean to!] I would probably get the fruit [surprise surprise!] because the chocolate was a little rich. We demolished everything they brought but that, leaving a few treats nibbled but unfinished.
They did wonderfully with the kids, and with the children of other tea-goers nearby, the service was lovely, the bonus flaming dessert [bananas foster!] delicious and no one batted an eye at me snapping photos like an utter tourist. -

This location came recommended to me by a friend that used to live in Denver. I love high tea and have gone to a few ( not in England yet ). So far of all the places I have gone to for high tea, this is the best. We waited a little to get seated but other than that wait, the service is pretty good. The tea is great, the scone is awesome. They refilled the cucumber sandwich for free. The chocolate truffles tasted really good as well. We had live piano player and then drums and cello. The ambient is really nice and when we went, there were 4 ladies dressed in 1800 dress having tea there with their beautiful exotic hats. It was awesome. I have gone to high tea at the well known beautiful Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong. There were more variety but the food was not as good. Lisa's tea in Santana Row is also OK but the food also does not compare and the ambient as well. If you are in Denver, go to have high tea. I think it is worth the money. Remember to make reservations though.
