My favorite restaurant in Milwaukee. Great food, and it's walking distance from all downtown attractions. Have the obligatory bratwurst for lunch somewhere, then stop here for a fantastic and unique dinner.
It's reasonably priced with a variety of food from all over Africa. There's something for everyone and the friendly hosts will be happy to help you find something you'll like. You'll be comfortable here, and have a great time. -

This is one of my regular haunts. I have had just about everything on the menu, and I'm never disappointed with the flavor and quality of the meals that I've had at African Hut over the years. The owners, Yinka and Moji are a Nigerian couple that are two of the friendliest proprieters in the city of Milwaukee. They always have the time for a friendly chat or a highly informative discussion of Africa and its cuisine.
The cuisine is decidely West African. You're not going to find anything close to Ethiopean cuisine here. What you will find is a lot of flavorful dishes that are foreign to the American palate yet familiar at the same time. This is comfort food. Peanut chicken stews, collard greens, spinach and pork, plenty of rice and plentiful corn bread. You ask for spice on the side, and Yinka or Moji bring it out for you in two seperate dishes, one called "sunshine" (hot sauce) and one called "happiness" (extremely hot sauce). Ask Yinka to bring out some "sunshine and hapiness" and he'll know what you're talking about.
If you make a reservation for a large group, you will be treated to Yinka's presentation on Africa and it's diverse cuisine, along with all of the food on the Hut's menu served family style to the group. Group meals at African Hut are perfect for parties or professional get-togethers.
EDIT: In February 2008, Yinka and Moji anounced they are temporarily closing African Hut, vowing to reopen in a different downtown Milwaukee location. They cite money problems due to the acquisition of another business venture, and a dip in business due to our exceptionally tough winter this year as reasons for the closing ...
Here's hoping they'll be back soon and better than ever!!!Listed in: Ethnic Milwaukee

I was in Milwaukee for a quarterly meeting 3 years ago, and my colleagues and I ended up at African Hut for dinner one of the three nights we were there.
It's been over 3 years since we were there, and we still talk about the restaurant, the food, the hospitality, and the experience to this day. It is one of the most memorable meals I've ever had.
There were a good number of us in the party, so we ordered family style and shared between us. The owner greeted us and gave us tips on dishes from the menu since none of us had experienced African food (outside of Ethiopian restaurants) before.
The Akara, Fried Plantains, and the Zanzi fries started out the meal and gave us a taste of the intricate flavors to come. We made sure to order the Fufu as one of our main dishes (with the Egusi Stew) and it was a hit - the dumpling was the perfect partner to the hearty stew.
The Cameroonian Collard Greens were also a hit with our group. We ordered one of the Vegetarian platters (can't remember which one) and got to enjoy the two hot sauces the owner brought out (Happiness and Sunshine were their names - no kidding!).
While the exterior may not look like the most inviting restaurant, the food makes it more than worthwhile. Stop by when you're in Milwaukee and enjoy the sounds of Fela Kuti on the speakers as you graze through a wonderful meal. -

I think most of the reviews here are right on - but its not Ethiopian - its more western Nigerian. Think old style southern cooking on a different Continent with different spices.
We were there on a week night - virtually the only ones there due to weather (temp drop 50 degrees in 4 hours - my god it was cold). Decided that we really wanted to try a bunch of stuff - soooooo - asked if we could do a "chef tasting".
Imagine accent now... "Whaaat is aaaa cheeeeffff taastiiing?"
Well, It's the best representation of your menu - up to the chef... and by god they went for it. What a blast!! brought out a great $25 south African CAB and preceded to serve a whole bunch of little spicy dishes. Sat and chatted with us. The peanut stew was the real diamond.
We loved it - will go back.
If you go, ask her about the "chef tasting". I'm trying to start a trend at ethnic MKE restaurants... lol. -

Tasty food! Great, great service from the owner, who chatted us up and shared with us that every year he travels to his home in Nigeria (I believe) to get spices and other things he must have for his recipes. This is definitely unique cuisine, in a unique, casual atmosphere. Try the peanut chicken!

Usually Ethiopian food is the one cuisine that I don't really like, but this was actually quite good. Our waitress was pretty crappy though...she served me hot tea in a friggen glass! How am I supposed to drink hot liquid from a glass?

If you want something unique, this is a good place to check out. The food is pretty light and very vegetarian friendly. Most dishes are served with rice and they have a great sweet potato pie.

Good food. I was afraid at first but it was great. Do not fear the unknown when it comes to food from different cultures. Just dig in. Be wary of people pointing to the green dipping sauce for the plantains, VERY HOT!
