Review from Ed R.
Visit this wonderful interesting museum, and find out more about the incredibly brave people who struggled for freedom. Inspiring, and gives some insight into a different point of view of history. I felt righteous as I smiled and nodded to the lady on the way out the door.

Gorgeous building, they've always got great historic/art shows and wonderful programs going on.
-2 stars because you can't check out any of the books. -

The African American Museam and Library are located just two blocks from Frank Ogawa Plaza and a stones throw from Preservation Park and the Unitarian Church.
The library primarily functions as a research library and archive for local African American history- which is everything from journals of influential African Americans - Huge Black Panther Collection and other cool odds and ends.
The upstairs is host to a museum that has rotating exhibits.. which are really interesting.. and free to go and check out!
However if your in need of research materials.. call ahead and make an appointment and the staff with help by pulling all of the materials for you - and show you how to collect information without damaging the originals.
This is a hidden gem among Oakland's fine spots.. for its historical and architectural significance as much as the resource it provides. -

This lovingly restored 1902 Carnegie building includes a museum and art gallery devoted to the African-Americans who made an impact on the Bay Area and Northern California.
