I'm Turkish, so the flavors of the Afghan Kebab House was deeply scrutinized by my taste-buds.  My husband and I have been going here for 12 years, and that says a lot.  You wouldn't think much of it upon first glance, but do your epicurean sensibilities a favor and sit yourself down and take in the fragrant basmati rice and lamb dishes.

Everything from the Chai (tea) to the spicy yogurt sauces are made to perfection.  The courses are well balanced and nutritious, fresh and incredibly memorable. The meats are tender and juicy.  The service is fantastic.

What is lacking in decor in this tiny restaurant, it more than makes up in delectable apps and entrees.  Even as I write this review, my mouth is watering.  I think a trip to the city is in order - pronto!

Def good chicken shwarma!!  It was a little bit on the dry side but the flavor of it all was definitely not like any street vendor.  Very cozy place, and nice waiter/server.  Just FYI, this place is no longer called Afghan Kebab House, it is now called Mango and has a different menu.  I'd def come back again in the future.

The food was good, but the service was extremely slow and the place was a little dingy.

For an appetizer, we shared the Sambosa, which in my head I was equating with Indian samosa (which was my own fault, thus my disappointment).  The Sambosa here was flat as a pancake and completely lacking in stuffing.  For the entree, we both had the Combo Kebab, which the menu states comes with basmati rice, Afghan bread, and salad.  It did indeed come with basmati rice, which was delicious, but it is in my opinion that 3 leaves of lettuce with no dressing do not equal a salad.  Also, the Afghan bread was dry, clearly left out too long and simply re-heated before serving.

    Wow, wow, wow!!!!

THIS IS THE GREATEST PLACE TO EAT!!

I have been here a few times previously and i took it to the next level recently.  I had Afghan Kebab House Astoria cater my event and  the guests were blown away with the fabulous food.  The chai tea was great, the green tea was great, the appetizers were great, wow, i guess it was all great.

Furthermore,  It is very clear that Afghan Kebab pays very close attention to food quality and nutrition.  The kebabs are not fried, or battered in butter, or lard or any sorts of bad oil.  Insted they are grilled and very tasty, incredibly tasty, especially the fish kebabs.  I did not have to worry about food quality, even for my large order.

In conclusion, i highly recommend Afghan Kebab House Astoria because they excel with food quality and nutrition.  I take my friends and family here and now i am having them cater my large events.

It is a great feeling to be assured of wonderful food when you are preparing an event for many guests of different backgrounds and cultures; this is why i recommend Afghan Kebab House Astoria on Steinway Street, Queens, NY.

    I love this place!

Prompt delivery, consistent quality, friendly service.  AWESOME prices.
Several small issues - they never give you enough yoghurt sauce when you order for delivery.  There are no plastic utensils either.  And the Mango juice I ordered, while fresh queezed, was made from very underripe fruit.

My Kofta Kebab entree was sizable, delicious and came with a metric ton of rice.  DELICIOUS.  Perfect for lunch.

Next time, I'm going to ask for more yoghurt sauce.  And maybe try apple juice.  (mixes better with whiskey anyway....)

    THANK YOU AFGHAN KEBAB HOUSE!

Everything about this restaurant is fantastic - ambiance, service, and of course the food.  My girlfriend and I went on a weeknight and didn't have to wait for a table.  We were seated immediately and since we weren't familiar with this type of cuisine, the friendly waiter patiently described the dishes on the menu to us and even provided recommendations.  We ended up going with the combo for two (2 appetizers, 2 kebabs, 1 side dish) for $34.99 and sampled a variety of meat and potato dishes, all of which we enjoyed very much.  You absolutely get your money's worth.

Definitely come here on an empty stomach.  Your tummy will thank you.

I discovered this restaurant one day when a friend came to town asking for Halal food.  We picked her up at LaGuardia and figured we'd try our luck on Steinway.  Boy am I glad we did!!

We've been back 3-4 times now, always for a special occasion.  The staff is always welcoming and kind.  Typically, we are the only party in the restaurant, but even if it is busy, they are very accommodating and patient with us (we're not all that well-versed in Afghan fare).

The food is absolutely delicious!  I have loved every kebab we've tried except the fish and I think that's just personal preference.  The Afghan teas, rice, salad, and meat are always exceptional.

Five stars for Afghan Kebab house.  I wish there were more NYC restaurants that take pride in their service and food like you do!

We went around 9:00 on a Friday night.  We were seated promptly in the front near the opened windows (making it feel like outdoor dining).  There were three of us and we decided to split everything family style.  Everything was delicious, he staff was very friendly and to add to the great experience - it's BYOB!

    Definitely a keeper!

I accidentally went into this place thinking it was the Kebab Cafe.  I couldn't leave because the waiter or manager was so nice.  The chicken kebab was probably the best I've had, but the okra dish tasted like it'd been frozen and the sauce out of a can.  The lunch special at $8.95 includes bread and salad, but the salad is made with iceberg... Not my favorite.

I'd say definitely stick with the meat dishes.  The atmosphere is comfortable, and staff very nice.  Still need to check out Kebab Cafe!

A really great meal at an extremely fair price and BYOB to boot!  Had the combo for 2 (2 appetizers, 2 kebabs, 1 side dish) and got the lamb tikka and fish combo kebabs.  My date liked the lamb the best, i really enjoyed the fish tandoori.  The appetizers were boiled dumplings in minted yogurt and ground meat on top.  It was excellent.  The fried turnover with spinach and yogurt was also very good.   Both the salad and the rice were good.  The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the side dish.  At the waiters recommendation, we tried the pumpkin.  It wasn't terrible, but it just didn't float my boat.

The waiter who served us was extremely friendly and allowed me and my date to just hang out after we finished our meal to talk.  We never felt rushed by anyone to get out of the restaurant (which is pretty unusual).  I will definitely return and try some more of their menu.

Well done in many respects. The food, service, atmosphere, and location are fabulous. Steinway St. in Astoria is filled with hidden Middle Eastern gems, this happens to be one of them. Not a far walk from the subway, safe neighborhood, made this experience more pleasurable

Ordered the combination special. A platter of Afghani food, especially for people like me who are new to Afghani cuisine. The dumpling and turnovers for an app. was excellent. Got one meat, one spinach. For a main, the both the lamb and chicken kebab were fabulous. The chicken was especially well seasoned with various spices. On the side, I ordered the hummus. This was arguably the best part of the meal. It was light, airy, and perfectly garnished with olive oil.

The service was fabulous, and guided me through the menu. Most Middle Eastern cuisine builds on a few base elements, for better or worse. This restaurant has it down, will be back for sure.

I tried this place out for the first time last night.  I was in the mood to try something different and I have to say Steinway is full of halal restaurants, making my choice extremely difficult!  Thankfully, it was one of the only places that wasn't engulfed in a cloud of hookah smoke so I decided to try it out.
My friend and I split a combo for 2 which included 2 appetizers, 2 kebabs, one side and an enormous mound of delicious brown rice with raisins and carrots, all for only $34.99!!
The service was great.  The atmosphere is intimate, modern and immaculately clean.  Food was awesome and I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem does not have a liquor license so it's BYOB!!
Food was so delicious,  I will definitely be going back.

Pretty good food.  We had the Aushak Goushti, which were the highlight of the meal for me.  I've never had dumplings in this fashion.  The combination of meat, yoghurt, mint and spices was really interesting.  I had the Chicken Quorma which was decent, and Filip had the Kofta, which I found to be average at best.
I need to try these dumplings at a few more places before I can definitively say that they are good at this particular restaurant.  It may just be their exoticness (to me) that impressed me.
The atmosphere and service are fine.

I like how they had a separate vegetarian menu although I am vegan. Vegan here going to a kebab house! I ordered the Sabzi Palau which is spinach cooked with chickpeas, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, herbs and spices. It comes with salad, rice and Afghan bread. The rice is cooked with meat broth so I didn't get any. For the salad, I ate it with freshly squeezed lemon juice as a dressing. The guy working there was nice enough to bring out the ingredient list for the bread and read it out to me, yay it was vegan! The spinach dish was delicious but it was so much of the same flavor. This was my first time eating Afghan food, I had a pleasant experience here.

I went here last night with a friend and loved the atmosphere. The waiters are welcoming and friendly, while at the same time not overbearing. We ordered the fried appetizers stuffed with spinach and potatoes which was excellent. The only reason this place does not get a 5-star rating is because I did not like my eggplant dish (from the vegetarian menu). In fact, it was pretty bland and unappetizing. However, my friend really enjoyed his chicken, lamb, and beef dish immensely and kept raving about it the whole time, so it could be that I ordered a dud. Nevertheless, the entire experience was a solid 4. I would go back there again.

Amazing food. I am familiar with Afghani cuisine, and Middle Eastern is one of my favorite food types... I was not let down.

I ordered the combo kebab with qabuli, and everything was very tasty. The seasonings were fantastic and it is worth the extra dollar to upgrade the rice. The mix of the sweet qabuli with spicy lamb and chicken is divine.

I will only be in this area a couple more weeks before my backpack and I hit Europe and Asia but I hope I can get back to this restaurant again.

So why only 4 stars? I'm stingy with my 5s. Everything has to be perfect, and since I did take-out, I can't comment on their tables, wait service, etc. It took a little longer than the 20 minutes they projected to finish the cooking of my meal, but the staff at the counter was so friendly about it, so that made it better.

I checked out this place along with 10 of my cousins on a Friday night. The food overall was good. I ordered chicken Tika and spicy chicken combo. The tika was good but the spicy kabab was very very spicy. Also, I did like the portion size. It was small compare to what other Afghan restaurant usually give you. The smoothies were not great.

The service was extremely slow, and our waiter forgot some dishes we ordered we had to remind him few times :( In addition, the place was small and a bit dingy. The neighborhood is very nice but parking is a bit of an issue.

Standard mideastern fare.  Kebabs, rice, tea, hookah smokers, etc.  The food is good, fairly priced but I think the highlight is the Afghan bread.  I could eat sheets and sheets of  that stuff it's that good.  It's leavened bread baked thin and it has a great crunch to it (yet soft).

    Out of this world!

Starting from appetizers onward my friend and I were speechless-- Literally speechless, the food is that fantastic. Everything was fresh with fascinating, sublime flavor combinations (cardamom basmati rice, dill & mint yogurt). Service (by owner himself) was also superb, and he had fantastic suggestions. Lovely restaurant, spotlessly clean, and great ambiance.

I will go back again and again. I will travel far distances to eat here again.

Good, relatively inexpensive place. Food was tasty and well-looking, my wige and I had lamb kebab and beef quorma which we both enjoyed. Waiter could be more attentive, gi en the fact we were the only guests when we arrived and later only two pairs entered, I should have been easy for him to pay more attention. I liked the interior design it is simple designed nothing too excessive. And in warm weather you can even sit at the table which leads to small balcony, cozy and comfy. They don't carry beer but you can buy one next door and bring it in.

Rice is slightly greasy but absolutely delicious. I cannot say enough good things about this place! Absolute highest recommendation if you're in the mood for good, spicy meat and rice dishes.

Great food and even greater service. Although I'm familiar with Middle Eastern cuisine, Afghani food is new to me. Our waitress was extremely patient and helpful, making some fantastic suggestions based on our preferences.

My friend and I split a kebab combo for 2, which got us salad, 2 apps, 2 kebabs, a side, and some rice. For less than $20 each, we walked out of the restaurant stuffed, happy, and with leftovers for the next day. I'm really glad to have found this unassuming and yummy little restaurant. I'll be back.

I went with some friends to Astoria to visit the area. We were walking around and stumbled across Afghan Kebab House. They had recently renovated it so inside everything was very clean and modern. The food was excellent. The service was great. I ordered the chicken kebab with rice/salad and afghan bread as well as the vegetarian eggplant dish. The eggplant could have been less soupy but was a great 'sauce' to accompany the chicken with. I definitely recommend this place. Plus there's a lebanese bakery right in front for baklava and other arab pastries. Try it!

Generally, I like other middle eastern cuisines better than afghani.  This place changed my mind a bit.  I really enjoyed the food.  The atmosphere and everything was great,  but I just give my rating here based on the food.  Order the quorma.  It's the best I've had in New York.
