So, I wasn't sure what to expect going into this place. Interesting combination of things in the store!
I had the gyro sandwich and my husband had the falafel sandwich. The gyro was good - I would go there for another one (not quite as good as demitris gyros in my opinion). Keith said the falafel was good as well.
Keith was also pleased to find garbanzo beans, tahnine, and halawa (spelling?) in the market part of the store. None of these were available at safeway, and he hasn't found halawa anywhere else in livermore, pleasanton (he got hooked on it on a trip to israel a few years ago).
It probably took 5 minutes or so for our food to be prepared, but it gave us a chance to look at all the things on the shelf in the market.
We'll definitely go back. -

I'm really torn on how to review this place. Let me attempt:
I came to the Afghan Food Mart because I had a "buy one entree get one half off" coupon. I ended up ordering a Lamb Gyro Platter and a Falafel Platter. The food was tasty, but as Jocelyn F noted, they cut up the gyro bread into slices, making it cumbersome to eat.
Okay, on to the ambiance: Umm, no. The door was open, it was hot, there were flies and the TV was blaring.
The service: The man behind the counter (who I assume is the owner) was very friendly. But be forewarned that the food is made to order, so you will wait...a very long time. I spent my time inspecting the assorted items they had for sale in their market, such as Rose Water, Baklava and an open packet of Bubbalicious.
To sum it up, I would eat here again, but I would probably have my husband go instead, place the order, go get his car washed, come back and pick up the food. -

This is a cute little place in Livermore and a nice change from the fast food chains surrounding it. It's small and you might miss it. I found it on a fluke after the kickball championships (yeah). It near taco bell, carl's jr and subway. Right next to Sam's salon. It is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. There is a wall with some items from Afghanistan - darleenjing tea, biscuits, frozen halal meat, Toward the back wall what looks like a deli/meat counter, the front counter makes smoothies and there is a kitchen where I picked up my lunch. There are also a few benches to eat on premise. It' pretty much amazing how much is packed into that place.
I had the gyro platter. The total came to 8 dollars and some change. It was really good. The meat was perfectly seasoned,a small salad that included such rarities in to go salad as cucumbers, tomatoes and onions. Which I am assuming are freshly cut on premise. The other section had the yogurt dressing and he made sure I had some chutney before I left. I thought that was nice. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was that the naan was sliced into strips. I had to eat the thing in pieces instead of whole as I am used to.
Great little ethnic place and a welcome change. -

The first time I went here I had the gyro with the schwarma, I really liked it. The yogurt went great with the meat shavings and the lettuce added a nice crunch. The pita tasted very fresh.
I've been wanting to try falafals for the longest time so I ordered the falafal plate. The order consisted of pieces of pita, tomatoes and lettuce and the yogurt sauce. I'm not sure what falafals are supposed to taste like but I've read they are supposed to have some crunch. These were very doughy and not crunchy at all, pretty dry too.
I'm willing to give falafal's another try but not at this place. My advice; stick to the gyro's.

Yum! We had the gyro platter and the felaffel platter. The gyro platter was really tasty. I would go back for that. The owner was very nice too. He gave me a waffle cone for free when I asked to buy one without ice cream. Yes, it's strange. Ice cream and smoothies AND Afghan food. Huh? Whatever, I like it. I wouldn't get the felaffel platter again. The felaffels were dry and not crunchy. But I do like the place. It has it's own strange charm and the gyros were yummy:)

This is a good $5.00 lunch place. I had a gyro which is the classic middle eastern food of lamb wrapped in a pita with lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce of sour cream and cucumber. It was a filling and tasty meal for $5.00. Do not go here if you are looking for a real restaurant atomsphere; the place has the ambiance of a bus depot. But the food is cheap and top notch.

I love bolani- and it is a lot of work to make well at home. I have had both the spinach, and the potato/tomato here and both were excellent. Don't miss the spicy interesting sumac to sprinkle on it as well.
My mom, sister and I had more than we could eat for 18.00. True the ambience was noisy, and the fan needed to be going to keep it cooled off . Still I will go back because the food is delicious, and I need to check out the grocery in more detail. -

I went to try this place today because the only time I've had a Gyro was in New York and San Diego. All of which were prepared differently but were equally delicious. At the Afghan Food Mart I ordered a Chicken Gyro ($4.99) and a piece of Baklava ($1.99). The price you pay for the tiny peice of pastry is kind of ridiculous but that's the standard price everywhere you go, and trust me it's worth every delicious bite! I popped mine in the microwave for 15 seconds, and it came out crispy and flakey on the top and warm and gooey on the bottom. Perfect! For $4.99 you get a generous sized Gyro with plenty of meat, lettuce, red onion, tomato, cucumber, and their special sauce. It was very very tasty and I will surely return. I wish they would throw in some fries or something on the side for the price you pay though.. All in all it was a good experience and the owner was very friendly. I recommend you give this place a try if you're craving Greek food!

Still delicious!! We each had a vegetarian falafel sandwich, and they were wonderful. But what really made it for me was the chutney on the side. It was a cilantro and chili chutney, and it was so fresh and so authentic -- which was kind of a surprise b/c the store is Afghan, but Afghan cuisine is similar to Indian cuisine... It tasted exactly like the chutney my mom used to make. I can't wait to go back!
