Love this place. For lunch on mass ave, cheap eats and the gyros may be the best in town

Review from DeAnna P.
I am reserving full judgement until we return. You know how food doesn't taste as good once you are not hungry? We went last on First Friday. We had been snacking for hours, but were still a tad hungry, so off we went on a gyro hunt.
The gyro meat was dry and did not pack a bunch of flavor. But again, if I was more hungry, I question whether I would have liked it more. We started by sharing a bowl of lobster bisque, and oh-my-goodness. What a fantastic surprise. It was velvety, creamy, luscious, insert pretty much any other complementary adjective you can think of for this kind of soup and it would fit. Definitely the best thing in the entire place.
The ambiance of the place is cute. The service is ok, not amazing. I was seated next to a review of the place from 2004 and it listed some delicious-sounding items that I am POSITIVE are no longer on the menu. I wonder if they will bring them back (hint, hint -- owners, are you reading this?!?!).
I will go back, just to get the lobster bisque. Hopefully I will have better luck with a main course next time. -

I went here recently with a group of people, after hearing great things about the place.
The service was... not impressive. We had reservations for a larger party, and since not everyone showed up, we had to switch seating around a bit. We didn't mind moving around a bit, since we knew they needed the extra tables, but we felt like they were a bit bent about the whole process. I know it's a pain, but we were flexible, so it wasn't necessary to make us feel like we were putting them out.
As far as the food goes, it was decent, but I'll stick with Santorini's for my mediterranean fare. The prices on tiny "carafes" (read: tea jars) of wine were pretty steep for what we got, and they weren't particularly clear about that until we had already received them.
Our waiter was not very friendly at all, although he did quickly fix a mistake he had made on my order, as well as a mistake he had made in finding a vegan option for one of my friends.
Overall, it's OK, but the service pulled my rating down quite a bit. I don't think I'll be going back. -

Had a meeting here with a client of sorts and it's a spot she swears by.
Us being native NYers, we know this type of food really well (PS: if you ever catch me use the word 'fare' in any review, it aint me. have that clone shot and killed cuz that word is abused more than the word 'genre'.)
So... the place was really cute. I'll admit that.
They got lots of options for drinks, too. That doesnt hurt. The break and butter was also good.
However, while I thought my dish was good, I didnt find it amazing.
Either way, I wouldnt deny this place again. Just wouldnt rush to go there. -

Went here for an early lunch on a Saturday with some friends. We had to wait for the place to be open and were the first table to sit down. Because it was a nice early summer day, we decided to sit outside on the patio in the shade. The service was okay, nothing to write home about. The food however, was great! I had the eggplant burger and it was prepared very well (just a little difficult to eat as a sandwich). Everyone else also seemed to enjoy their food, although the salad was a little on the light side (not enough protein). Although this place has lots of vegetarian options, my partner who has a gluten allergy had very few choices.
Overall, not a bad place to grab some lunch before strolling around Indy's Mass Ave. -
Review from Tara M.
This place is full of unrealized potential - the location is great and they have pretty nice outdoor patio seating, but my meal of stuffed eggplant with couscous and a salad was mediocre (and for the price I'd have to say it was less than mediocre) and the service was on the glum side.

Overpriced for what it what.
I had the greek salad and hummus. Mediocre.
Might as well go to Santorinis if you want greek food.
It was super packed and the waitress was over seated. So that didnt help that it took waaay longer than it should have to get an alright salad.
I would look around for something else if you are on Mass Ave... -

$40.10, for two cups of soup, two small salads, two perriers, one slice of cake, how can that be? If it was wonderful I wouldn't mind but the food was fair at best. The Lobster bisque was salty, the salad had wilted lettuce, it is just too much money for fair food.
Kabob Korner is much better as is Santorini's -

Aesop's Tables had been on our list of restaurants for a long time and this summer we finally made it there. It was very warm, so most people sat out., This seemed to stress out the staff, who (despite being with significant numbers) complained endlessly about being so busy.
I ordered The Gyros, which was... well... a gyros. In terms of taste or presentation not different from any greasy gyros place, but more expensive. My wife had the Mary Beth Salad, a Greek salad with gyros meat and tzatziki; again, nothing special. She does rave about the Sun-Dried Tomato and Feta Spread though.
Overall, I fail to see the specialty of Aesop's Table. If I want to have Greek food, I'll go to Greek Islands. Perhaps the Spanish or Portuguese dishes are special, but I doubt it. -

I love going to this place! The food is great, the service has always been excellent, and I really enjoy stopping in for a bite at lunch.
My favorites have to be the Sultan's delight and the Gyro classic. I am also a really big iced tea drinker, and they have a really good iced tea on the menu. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, a very good place to get away from work and catch a quick lunch. -

Kathy, the owner, has adopted a new track with the meats she prepares. Instead of using the soy, cereal infused meat she had been forced into from her supplier in Chicago she's using local, pure lamb and beef. She's slow cooking the choice cuts and preparing some of the most unique "traditional" dishes with flavor and texture you'll not forget. This is a 20 year restaurant pushing the flavor envelop that you simply have to try soon.

This is one of those places that is the quinessential Indy spot. People here love it, but there isn't much to love. The space is somewhat raggedy. The tables and what not are piece mealed together and for the most part it seems to be all patio furniture. So it goes without saying that it is not what you would call cozy. The food is ok, they serve mussels, which you all should know by now are one of my favorite foods. But they are just as lack luster of mussels as most other places you can get them in Indy.
Over all the experience was marginal, to be honest it's so middle of the road that I don't remember what I had, not bad enough or good enough to remember. The service is pretty disappointing as well, I hope it was a product of us being there so late, but who knows, it could be that bad all the time.
The upshots included the service being fast. And....and...well thats all I got. -

I used to love eating at Aesop's when I did a stint years ago at a Mass Ave. business. However, I totally agree with Sarah S. and some of my fellow reviewers....not all that special anymore, particularly when this part of town has several other good eateries nearby. And the price....yikes!
My girlfriend and I parted with $22.00 of our hard-earned greenbacks for two cups of soup - one a lobster bisque, the other a creamy tomato basil - along with the "spreads" appetizer plate and a very small side of olives. And, that was BEFORE tip and with water as our beverage. The service was okay, but really only functional. To top it off, I'm pretty sure the underside of our glass tabletop had a hummus - or something else - smear on it from a previous diner.
My take: this old favorite needs a visit from Gordon Ramsay and none too soon! -

I'd love to give this place higher marks just because the owner of the establishment was such a delightful person to talk with and discuss international travels. The photography on the walls is her's and her stories about the lands she has visited is very interesting.
Yes, the interior is eclectic. Sort of in keeping with the types of bit of this and bit of that decor you'd find in many of the small eateries in the mediterranean parts of the world where the smallest can feel like eating on someone's porch full of second hand decorations and family moments. The furniture is uncomfortable and the glass top on our table kept sliding around causing us to fear that it would go too far, lose balance, and crash to the floor.
My husband had a sandwsh that he said was incredible. I can't remember the name but if I remember correctly it had chicken, pesto, pineapple, and several other things.
I had a gyro salad that was typical and small for the price. There was very little meat and I found myself starving. I asked the server to make sure there would be feta on it and there wasn't.
The kids split one of the appetizer plates that had three spreads and some pita. The pita was like what you'd find at the supermarket and it wasn't even warmed. It was cut into quarters. Warming it slightly on a grill with some olive oil would do wonders in making it more palatable. The spreads (one of which was hummus) was bland and had no flavor other than chickpeas. I like hummus that has lots of garlic, lemon, and oil flavors. The other two dips were equally boring.
I had ordered a side of olives for the kids but one was never brought to the table. Fortunately, we were not charged for it.
We had water and iced tea as our drinks.
It was very, very, very overprices for the portions and the quality. I can make the same stuff at home.
So 5 stars for the interesting owner. 2 stars for the food. 3 stars for the ambiance (4 for decorations and 2 for tables and chairs). 3 for location. 1 for the prices. -

We were scouting out Indy's pub avenue, aka Massachussetts Ave, for a quickish dinner bite. We noted Chatham Tap was overflowing, but we drove by Aesops and it looked of interest with the Mediterranean theme. It hit the spot for us, with no waiting. Wife had a fresh chicken pita sandwich. Son had a huge lamb shank with ravioli, which he really enjoyed (3.5 stars he says), and I had lamb stew. All were good and satisfying. The lamb in both dishes wasn't falling off the bone tender, but good enough. Fresh bread and greek salads came with the dinners. We finished with a nice lemon cream cake, which was particularly refreshing after the lamb. Nice to have Aesops around!

Does it survive because of the cute punny name? It was understandable that Aesop's might thrive years ago, when Mass Ave was up-and-coming and had little else to offer. But it remains to this day, taking prime real estate away from restaurateurs who could do much better with this site. The taramosalata was oversalted and skimpy for what you pay; others have already bemoaned the uncomfortable chairs. Italian and Greek are among the two cuisines that are well-represented in Indy's downtown; you can no doubt find other better options in Fountain Square or south of the Wholesale District (Babe Denny).

Friends, if you like Mediterranean food, you will not be disappointed here. Regardless of the weather outside, it's always summer inside. I have so many favorites here: greek salads, seafood-infused dishes, lunch sandwiches...and the baklava is worth every calorie. There is also a Spanish influence as well, which makes for an enjoyable and pleasant experience. It's a warm and welcoming place...and it's a great place to go before going to the theatre...they always check to make sure they get you out in time!

Review from Carey D.
I LOVE Greek and Mediterranean food, but Aesop's is not a place I recommend. I went there on a first date with an unadventurous eater, and while he thought the menu items were too exotic and scary, I thought they were a little boring. As other reviewers have commented, it's not really worth the price, especially when you can pay the same amount and get much better food (or walk down the street to Yats, pay a LOT less and get much better food). The furniture is a little odd - it does seem to be rickety patio furniture. I went on a cold winter night and unfortunately froze the entire time because there's no entryway - the door opens directly to the dining room. The service, food and atmosphere are all mediocre - unfit for Mass Ave. Sorry, but I don't really have much of anything nice to say about this place.

I had a zoo book coupon so I went to the restaurant because I wanted some gyros. They made us get 2 entrees with teh zoo book and gyros was not on them menu. The place was very expensive and after getting 2 entrees and 2 beers we spent 48 bucks....38 with coupon. I had lentils over rice and it was 14 bucks. For 6 bucks I would have gotten twice as much and it would have been a lot better at YATS accross the street. My wife liked what she had much better and would have given a better review.
