we used this company for two excursions and had great experiences on both trips. the company seems to cater to smaller groups than many of the other outfitters in kona and i really liked how they seem to be a bit more environmentally conscious than others.
we went on the captain cook snorkel (amazing) and the night manta ray snorkel (also amazing). the guides were friendly and cool and we were happy with the kayaking gear on both trips. the reef is easily damaged by kayaks in captain cook and our guide was friendly but firm with the other groups that weren't respecting the area. some of the larger companies may be better for weak kids & older people but definitely check out this group if you are reasonably fit and prefer experiences that focus on nature and respecting the environment/animals. -

We went to Adventures in Paradise today to rent snorkeling gear and a kayak to kayak to Captain Cook's monument in Keakelulua Bay. The owner, forget his name, was really helpful. Gave us good info about using the kayak, where to go in water, etc. All things you would expect but what I really appreciated was that he didn't push the tour which was 2x price.. They have quality gear that is well maintained and for the price we got a kayak, seats, dry bag, fins, mask and snorkel.
The owner Also gave us a heads up that there are locals who will offer help launching kayaks into the water and bring them out of water for you for about $5-10 tip. He said tell the locals if you want help or tell them you dont either way there r no issues. We launched ourselves and used them to bring the kayak out of the water and load onto the car. For the fellas out there i was reluctant to use them but when i saw my wife nearly get pulled in i knew we needed help.
Adventures was easy, it's situated right on the main highway right before you make the turn to the bay and easy to return the gear too. -

This was the first time we went snorkeling. My wife doesn't know how to swim and we went with our 3.5 year old daughter. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Jeff who we first met was very helpful and accommodating. While everybody else - including Kona Boys who most guidebooks recommend - were going to charge us $150 per person including my daughter, Jeff waved her away saying she was so small, it was no charge and he charged us $80 per person inclusive of all taxes.
But they provided such great service. Joy and Roy were our guides and they were both so welcoming and easy with my daughter.
The kayak to Captain Cook monument was so beautiful. The spinner dolphins put on a great show for us on the way to the monument and back. The snorkeling was superb. Roy helped my wife with snorkeling and soon she was happily snorkeling away. Joy took my daughter out and had her squealing and snorkeling. My daughter was initially terrified and refused to get into the water, but Joy just eased her fears away. My daughter rode the kayak back with Joy instead of us. Joy even had her row !
They provide all the equipment necessary including prescription class snorkeling masks which helped me see the fishes clearly. They provided healthy and tasty snacks, good coffee and were so easy with time. They were in no hurry to get us back, allowing us to enjoy the experience as much as we wanted to.
Can't recommend these folks highly enough. They are a classic case of "what you pay is not what you get, they're way, way better". -

A+ experience!
I've had mixed experiences doing tours in sunny destinations but these guys are great! Hubby and I ended up being the only people who booked in with them that day so we ended up with our own private guide which was a bonus!
Professional, great local knowledge and friendly. We met the owner upon arrival and had Roy as our guide.
Clean equipment and everything is provided. The food on the trip is good - water, fresh fruit, granola bars and rice crackers. The guide lets you go at your own pace... was very patient with us while we were trying to get decent spinner dolphin pics! (we never did, it was an amazing sight to have them doing flips so near us!)
Lovely snorkeling area that is good for beginners with clear water and pretty coral. Since they start out early, you get there before Kealakekua Bay gets crowded. Nice opportunity to get Captain Cook monument pics as well.
Definitely worth it to book with them... especially since they do all the icky stuff like packing up the gear and hauling the kayaks in/out of the water! -

UPDATE of disposable camera pictures:
Don't even bother with the disposable camera! lol We have ZERO pictures that came out from our amazing experience, it's all in our little heads now. The disposable camera is not meant to take pictures in the dark (you might say, "DUUUH!" but we found out until we picked up the developed photos and complained to Costco - HEY WHERE ARE MY PICTURES?! and they said, night water pictures = nil).
Instead, rent those digital cameras for the week or day and bring it with you if you are comfortable in the water (just because it's dark at night and some of us might freak out and there goes the camera lost on the bottom of the ocean). I'm sure the digital camera will be able to capture some pictures and videos.1 Previous Review: Show all »

We took the morning guided kayak/snorkel tour to Captain Cook Monument. Karen was our guide. She was great! There were 6 total in the group, which is their maximum. All gear they provide snacks/drinks during the trip.
We met at the shop and then Karen and Jeff They took the kayaks down to the pier and put them in the water for us. They also met us on the return and helped us out of the water. This was a great help. Getting the kayaks in and out of the water in this crazy dock setup is pretty cumbersome. There are locals standing around who will help you for a tip (both in and out) if you do decide to just rent equipment.
Kayaking across the bay to the monument was beautiful. We didnt see any dolphins during the trip but did see from the shore that morning. Karen was very informative, telling us about the history of the monument and the conservation efforts to keep kayakers in the bay.
Snorkeling in the bay was amazing. The water is so clear and the variety of fish and coral just mind boggling. There were a ton of yellow tang fish congregating which you could see as yellow splashes from the surface as you kayaked in.
We were happy we used the guided tour on our first time in the bay because the recommended place to put the kayak when you get to the monument is a bit difficult to find from the instructions available in the guide books and on the web. We probably won't use a guided tour next time but will just plan to tip those locals at the pier. -

Our guides were excellent. Took time to talk about the area on the way down to the pier, and all the way to Capt. Cook's monument....Now that's a lot of talking.
On the way there we saw the swimming dog, and of course the dolphins. It's good that we booked the earlier tour because about an hour after we've arrived, everyone else's came. The water was clear so you can see deep down below. Bring your underwater camera!! We bought ours at Costco.
We were provided with plenty of snacks and water.
Remember to bring everything they've asked you to bring....you're gonna need it. -

What a great experience! The guides were great and told us about the history of the bay and Capt. Cook on the they down to the launch. After putting in, we kayaked a little over a mile to the Capt. Cook monument. We were able to walk around on shore, then got ready to snorkel. The water was clear, fish were amazing and the experience was fantastic. You snorkel in a fish sanctuary, so the fish are used to humans and ignore you. If you are lucky, you will see eels and spinner dolphins.
The snorkel trips leave early in the morning and beat the crowds that show up in the motorized boats later in the morning. We had the place to ourselves for nearly two hours. There were only 10 people in our party.
By the time the crowds show up, you have a snack and then kayak back to the launch site.
I was told the crowds are worse on Wednesdays due to the cruise ships. You will work up a big hunger for lunch. Be sure to eat at Annies in South Kona. It is on the water side of Hwy 11 about two miles north of Adventures in Pradise. Best burgers, fries and onion rings around. -

Awesome! As a jaded diver I wasn't expecting much, I was shocked at the quality of the diving and Mike the guide was awesome!
