Review from Megan C.
SO MUCH FUN!!! Last night, I had the good fortune of attending the Adventure Science Center's Way Late Play Date with a group of students from my graduate program. As natural science, geeks, this is obviously an excellent hangout for us. And Yazoo, Yelp!, and the Local Taco were sponsors, which put the greatness over the top. And, if the science exhibits weren't enough, the zombie theme and the band really put the event over the top!
The museum may cater to kids, but all of the exhibits are also made to be adult friendly. Within the first ten minutes of being there, my friends and I had climbed to the top of a giant play structure filled with exhibits on the body, sound, and physics and promptly made our way down the multi-level twisty slide. We played a laser game of pathogens versus the immune system, looked at the stars, investigated a real bee colony, answered quiz questions about the body, sat in an ambulance, played a game of checkers, pretended to be in Space, and got a great sampling of the star and laser shows in the Planetarium. I'm really excited to attend events like this in the future and I'm particularly interested in going back to see the full length star show at the planetarium! -

My husband and I joined my brother and his family in an outing while they were visiting us this past summer. I'd never had a reason to visit Adventure Science Center myself as we don't have kids just yet. This seemed like a great opportunity to check the place out!
My hometown of Columbus, Ohio touts a pretty impressive science center called COSI (Center of Science and Industry). I grew up going frequently and it was always changing and the exhibits were always engaging, interactive and educational. Having said all of that... I wasn't hoping for much in visiting Nashville's version.
As with most things, I came out of the experience eating my words because it was actually pretty awesome! I LOVED the space exhibits and the geocaching (or however you spell that) temporary exhibit was very informative! I had no idea there was this sub-culture going on around me! My five year old nephew new ALL about it. Pfhph. Kids.
All of the things to see, touch, hear and experience were educational and FUN! I'm going back once we have our own kiddos to take!Listed in: Kiddos: Load 'Em Up, Get 'Em…

This review is mainly intended for "The Science of Beer" event held at Adventure Science Center (ASC) annually in December. The ASC itself I'll review at another time, when I've had a better chance to experience it in it's new "Adventure" format. It has changed quite a bit since I attended day camps at Cumberland Science Museum in the summers of my youth.
I arrived very early to the event; I had gotten clearance from ASC and Yazoo to film the event and gather footage a project I'm working on. My film partner and I got to see the event from start to finish, with even a "behind the scenes" look at the last minute planning as the doors were getting ready to open to the general public and the closing down and event wrapup at the end of the night.
They move people in quite efficiently, having several tables set up in the ASC's entrance to check people in and hand out glasses. The event is self-guided; you are required to walk (later in the evening this became stumble) around the different levels of the ASC. There are different tables set up all over the building, each one specializing in a particular type of beer. Each table was staffed by two volunteers who poured bottled beer, 2 oz at a time into your glass. They had bottles of water available at the tables for rinsing your glass (although it seemed rather wasteful and ill-planned). The volunteers were all friendly and most were beer nerds like myself; they were not given any sort of information about the beers they were pouring, no brewmaster's notes, not even a sheet telling them which beers they'd be pouring ahead of time. They figured out what beer they were pouring when it was delivered to their table. I thought this was a missed opportunity for Lipman to move some new products to the many small business owners and beer aficionados I met walking around the event.
I didn't partake in the food at the event, being too busy lugging around a camera and sound equipment, but from personal experience, Swanky's Taco Shop (who catered) is excellent, and a good choice for food to warm your insides on a cool night. Many event goers echoed my thoughts on Swanky's when asked on film, however a great many also said they thought food should be a bigger part of the event, it seemed somewhat like an afterthought. A few people suggested food+beer pairings or perhaps some hors d'oeuvres set up on tables like the beers or the science stations.
All in all the event worked. The event goers were happy, and many of them were repeat visitors to the event. Some realized that it was a fundraiser for ASC, some did not, but all had a good time. I imagine that if I had partaken more of the beer that I probably would have had a lot more fun and not noticed as many of the little things that I did. Next time I come, I won't be working!Listed in: Yelp 100 Challenge 2012

i took my 27 month old there on a Friday. It was very crowed with loads of school busses pouring in, but it was still nice and the crowds spread well.
PROS:
- parking is free
- Exhibits change frequently
- The Planetarium is really nice and comes with great fun ways to learn about our solar system.
- they try to cover all ages and have designated areas for preschoolers but also climbing, jumping devices for older kids.
- staff reinforces good manners, like no running or bulling which I really appreciated.
CONS:
- overcrowded ( I counted 12 school busses in the parking lot )
- a bit pricey, it is a kid place and not really to interesting for an adult but they make you pay $12 and a 2 year old was $10. I do know they have specials for the summer and their membership seems reasonable. -

When I wrote my original review, I had only been to the Adventure Science Center's Way Late Play Date. However, after a strike of good luck and the generosity of Yelp and the ACS, I won a 6 pack of tickets to their Science of Beer event.
This event was OFF THE CHAIN! When you arrived you were given a Yazoo glass, a brochure and a ticket for a free full glass of beer. I think my favorite beer of the night was the Samuel Smith's Organic Raspberry Fruit Beer. It was delicious!
The tables were scattered all over the ACS so that you could play and look around as you try generous samples of different beers from different tables. Originally I thought the lines were going to be crazy, but they really did a great job of keeping the lines under control and the beer in stock.
They also had a Beer Olympics were you could try different activities with beer goggles on AND an awesome (and free) Yelp swag table.
All in all, I will definitely be going to this event again!Listed in: Table for Two

Don't count out the Adventure Science Center as being only a spot for the kiddos to crawl around.... I am totally dorking out over what a fantastic time those who have to pay taxes and pay mortgages can have here too!
Yelp was a sponsor for The Science of Beer event here the other night which offered up tastings to over 30 brews (pretty rad in itself) but I loved all the interesting exhibits and interactive activities that they offer along with it. Clearly 700 other grownups thought the same thing that night.
For $9, you can come anytime during their normal business hours to hang out. Adventure Science Center also offers the Way Late Play Date events that are after normal business hours and for adults only. You get to let loose and have fun while enjoying libations and mingle with others.
For those who are event planners or if you are seeking a spot to host your office meeting or seminar, ASC offers up some great rooms for that too! -

Prepare to be over-stimulated! ASC is a multi-tiered maze of educational fun!
It caters primarily to school age children, though there is a small area for ages 6 and under. There are shadow plays, balls that float through the air, mini rocket launchers, dinosaurs, bees, and more!
My favorite exhibit was a hidden, dark hallway that led to a pitch black room with a million stars and mirrors. I had to feel my way out of space. Waaaay cool!
If your child is able to sit still (mine is only 1, so that's,um, NOT an option) the staff also gives themed talks.
But the real magic here lies in the interactive nature of the exhibits. While having a rollicking good time, you will also learn something! Yee-haw!Listed in: For The Kiddos

While I wish many of the exhibits were a little more adult oriented, they are still pretty fun for everyone. (One kid I overheard while I was there said "If this is Science, I LOVE SCIENCE!"). Overall I would never discourage anyone from coming here. But I would certainly bring a kid with you for the maximum experience.
The Planetarium is quite nice as well. -

The Adventure Science Center is another one of the places in Nashville that all parents are extremely thankful for. On those days when it is either 100 degrees or 10 degrees and the kids are stir crazy there is no better place to go and burn off some quality energy while hopefully soaking in a little knowledge. Very fun for kids and adults can usually find something to hold their interest for a good amount of time.
My only complaints are that the exhibits don't rotate that much and things can get a little stale after 5 or 6 visits. Not for the kids, but for a parent it can get a little old. Still 6 visits of fun for kids on days when there is not a lot else you can do is more than worth the price of an annual membership.
One of these days I hope to go for one of their adult evenings like the Science of Beer or the wine tasting that was done, kids at home of course.
Adventure Science Center is one of those institutions that would leave a gaping hole if it were to magically disappear one day. Great for kids and part of making Nashville a complete town.Listed in: Kids Oasis

I came here with 2 other grownups (no kids in tow!) and wasn't sure it was going to be all that entertaining for us. I was so wrong! This place was awesome, and if you have actual kids to teach about science - even better!
The exhibits are both interesting and interactive. I actually learned things! We really liked the exhibit about the body, there was a really cool biofeedback "game" that was particularly exciting to our group of psychologists! The tower in the center is fun to go through, lots of things to climb or slide down. We also saw a show about African history/mythology related to the stars at the Planetarium, which was a great deal and more interesting than other basic Planetarium shows I've seen.Listed in: Ain't No Place I'd Rather Be, That'll Learn You

I loved venturing to the ASC on a Sunday afternoon in the springs when the temperature was in the high 80s. I arrived about 12:45 (15 mintues after they opened) and got a designer spot on the upper level.
Walking in, there was no line whatsoever compared to going in the winter (about a 15 minute wait). I felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Even 100 people in the museum is nothing compared to what seemed like 800 over the winter. We loved, loved it!
If there's ever a good time to go, try visiting on a Sunday! -

OK, so I went here one night with a bunch of friends for the Yazoo beer tasting thing a couple weeks ago. I think it was called, "The Science of Beer." As my buddy Mike at Piranha's says, "it was NISCHE!" (translation: nice, with a weird Billy Madison accent)
Did I mention they had lots of beer? Mmmmm... Funny thing is, I've passed this place countless times for a shade under 2 decades, almost every time thinking to myself, "hey I need to go check that place out." It figures I finally did when they tempted me with the beer! Oh weakness and human frailty!
I also saw that they have Pink Floyd playing with laser shows in the planetarium?!? SWEET! I will definitely be back for that this spring. -

The Adventure Science Center occasionally teams up with the Science Café http://meetup.com for really interesting programs for grownups. Scientific topics usually pertaining to current events are presented by experts in their field. Check it out http://www.meetup.com/.... Also http://www.adventuresc...

I agree with Courtney B. that the Planetarium is the best part of Adventure Science Center.
My wife and I went to the Center today and saw the Planetarium show "Skies Over Nashville" in which a live presenter did a great job explaining some of the stars, constellations and other planetary bodies (Venus, Mars, etc.) that you can see from Earth, often with the naked eye.
Most of the exhibits are geared for children or families, but we still had fun playing on exhibits like the harness that simulates the low-gravity environment on the moon and a video exhibit used motion capture technology to let you 'paint' with colors on a screen based on your body movements.
Don't forget to visit the third flood for an inside view of a bee colony. I liked how they marked the queen bee with a dot so that you could follow her movements around the hive.
Pretty much all the children we saw seemed to be having a great time and the adults seemed pretty enthused too.
If we had children, I think we would join the Center. It's especially nice as a cool place for kids to play and have fun during the summertime.
As it is, for now I think we're most likely to go back on occasion for Planetarium shows. Unfortunately, as others have noted, the Planetarium-only option is only available on Second Saturdays (once per month, after hours). -

My boys 3 and 5 had a fun day at the Adventure Science Center, we went during the week so it was not too busy. The bonus... our Lied Museum in LV is a member of the ASTC group of museums so we got in for FREE.

I love this little place. It's entirely set up for the kids to be able to interact. The primary attraction is the tower int he middle that has everything for physics (the kids can lift a car) to the human part of the human body that you can climb on and in. The tower is several stories tall and can take hours in itself to explore.
There are rotating exhibits as well as some play areas for smaller children. They just reopened the planetarium but I haven't visited that yet. The kids love to visit here. I suggest watching for a time when there is a coupon because it can get a little pricey for a large family.
The do offer some summer camp stuff as well so if you are looking for summer care, check out their website for pricing. -

For sure the highlight of my trip to Nashville. I went with my brother and we tore that place up! You can tell it was made for kids, but we learned a little, played with the kids, and had a blast. The room with the planets was pretty cool. I still don't understand the point of geocaching but that was fun too. One of the best parts for myself was shooting up bacteria in a simulation game. The other highlight was right outside the game there was a table with a ball in the center. I put a band on my head and my brother put on the other one and I guess the person who has calmer brain waves wins. It took me five minutes BUT I kicked ass. Finally I beat my brother at something! I'd go back here any day

Adventure Science Center (formerly known as the Cumberland Science Museum for those of us who have lived here a while) is a fantastic spot for kids...but honestly, I like going there with friends from time to time. Admission to the Center is $9 for adults, $7 for children ages 3-12 and free for members and 0-2-year-olds, and it's absolutely worth it.
Adventure Science Center is always adding new exhibits that are fun and informative, but they always keep the popular ones. There are several exhibits that kids of all ages can play on, including some that demonstrate the properties of simple machines and (my personal favorite) the Body Quest exhibit. You can play in giant reproductions of the circulatory systems, see how the brain works or even journey through the trachea.
Adventure Science Center is occasionally busy considering the many field trips taken there by countless elementary schools throughout Middle Tennessee. However, it's pretty neat to see all the little rugrats stomping about and playing with the various apparatuses (apparati?). They even have an exhibit where you can see your face aged up to 50 years by a computer.
No matter what your age, the Adventure Science Center has something for everyone. True, it's best for kids (and occasionally for cutesy little dates), but I dare you to go and not have fun. Impossible. -

The Science Center is Nashville's interactive museum and learning center and although it is mainly geared for kids, pretty much anyone can have a good time here. The whole concept is presenting science in a fun, accessible way with exhibits that double as playground and learning structures. The Science Center has been around a long time and friends of mine that grew up here can relate stories of visiting here on school field trips (it was called the Cumberland Science Center back then). It remains a popular spot for field trips to this day, and it is difficult to go here when there are not mobs of children running around everywhere. But that's all part of the fun, taking your kids or your friends, and running around silly until you're worn out. The exhibits here rotate out, but not too often, so it can be kind of redundant after awhile.
The Center just recently re-opened its brand new state of the art Sudekum Planitarium, which is worth the visit just by itself. Apparently it is the only planetarium of its kind in the U.S., with its high definition screen and amazing projector and full surround sound. The projector here now shows over 6 million stars (!!!!) while the old one only showed about 2500. At night you can see the fluctuating colors of the pyramid that houses the planetarium across town and it cuts an inviting image. They have several showings which you can choose from, one that projects what the Nashville sky should look like (if you were lucky to see the stars downtown that is) at any given season and one show that features the more prominent celestial bodies. The second show is narrated by Mark Hamil and the soundtrack was done by the Nashville Symphony which is pretty awesome. They also rotate out other space themed 'movies' every few months, its like an IMAX but way cooler. There's also pretty cool space themed exhibits outside the planetarium including a beautiful 3d replication of our solar system spanning one long wall.
Ticket prices are pretty decent for Adventure Science Center, $9 for kids, students, seniors and military personnel and $11 for adults. Be warned that the planetarium tickets are extra on top of admission, so if you're wanting to visit that you're looking at adding about another $6 or so. Their hours are limited, open until only 5, and they can get pretty packed during the weekends. One complaint I have is that you cannot visit JUST the planetarium easily. Or at least, you can't just purchase a ticket to the planetarium, you have to buy admission to the Science Center as well. Once a month, they allow you to buy just planetarium tickets, but its on a Saturday and the place sells out pretty quickly. To me, being a grown up and all, the planetarium is the best part, and I would visit it more often if they allowed separate admission more often. -
