I recently opened an account at Advantis. I did my research on local credit unions. I first tried another local credit union and had to wait in line forever to talk to a member services rep. In the time that they said I would have to wait, I was in and out of Advantis with a new account.
While Advantis was originally my second choice, it should be your first. I'm VERY happy with where I ended up. Everyone I've dealt with here has been helpful and super nice. I love that I get interest checking and ATM fees reimbursed (up to $25). Someone else pointed out that they give $5 out of the ATM. I'm also a fan of that!
It is one of the smaller Portland credit unions, and I like that. Their branches are convenient, small, and the customer service is excellent. -

My wife and I are in the process of closing our two FUSION checking accounts with Advantis because they have become more rule-bound and impersonal than any of the three other local credit unions or two large, national banks that we also do business with currently. We're moving the majority of our cash deposits back to Point West Credit Union, which by the way, currently offers higher rates of return (2.5%) with easier and fewer requirements in their version of "fusion" accounts...
It is unfortunate, because like all the prior reviews, we originally liked our relationship with Advantis. However, like what we found years ago with Portland Teachers, when Advantis started their expansion and building/developing their own branches it seems the organization began getting a bit too full of themselves. Also like what we saw with PTCU, after this began, the competitiveness of their service and products really started to drop off.
In particular, we think couples with multiple accounts really should examine the local market beyond Advantis. Why? We found that Advantis' policies are discriminatory against couples with multiple accounts.
For example: To gain the higher rate of interest in their FUSION account (currently 2%), one of the requirements is to complete 12 ATM-based transactions each "statement" cycle. They give one exception, one time, no matter how many accounts you have.
So, if you are an individual member with one FUSION account, you get one exception. Interestingly however, this one exception also applies to couples (two members) who, like us, had two FUSIONS accounts. So, one of our accounts got this exception, the other was never even eligible for an exception. Why not?
So, if like all previous reviewers, you are single and opening one FUSION account, Advantis is probably an OK option-- particularly if their branches are convenient for you. Their staff are nice and helpful like the previous reviewers attest to.
If you're a couple and want or need multiple accounts -- definitely look elsewhere. There currently are better options in Portland. Besides, it seems that Advantis' management is looking to attract and retain a customer base other than you anyway.Comment from MacKensey P. of Advantis Credit Union 3/5/2012

Review from Lydia H.
I have been nothing but pleased since opening my checking and savings accounts this past year. From the moment I opened my accounts it was obvious that my business mattered, and that Advantis cares about my financial needs and helping me get out of credit card debt. I am always greeted with smiles and helpful service. I love the nonuse of deposit slips, love that I can get $5s from the ATM, adore my interest checking, and no extra hidden fees. I only wish I had switched to Advantis long ago.

After Chase made the decision to take away free checking accounts, I pulled out my money right away and brought it to Advantis, simply because it was nearby. Little did I know that I'd have a problem right away! My debit card was charged twice at a pricey restaurant and, after contacting that establishment and not getting the money credited back to my account, I turned to Advantis. They dealt with my debit dispute within just two days. I was really impressed with their quick and friendly service and would certainly recommend them to others!

I've been with Advantis for a little over a year now and I wish that I had made the switch from a big bank much earlier. Their interest bearing account, Fusion Checking, is a great deal. The customer service folks at the Belmont branch are great; Cheree Wilkins and Lisa Jordan have always taken great care of me and always seen that I get what I need promptly, and with a smile. Highly recommended!

Switched from another CU just for convenience (this was closer to home) but found this place to be efficient fast and friendly - I set up several accounts which was no problem for them, and used them for some odd signature-type things - very "can do". Also like their web site - I asked them to integrate my accounts online and someone on the phone did it on the spot. Also have a spiffy new building with parking.
