I booked through Expedia and got a quote for $50 and some change for 3 days. Great deal! Everyone else was at least $70. Even better: when I went to pick up the car, it was actually less than that. It was $47 and change. I know it's such a small amount to save, but the fact is they didn't hide that from me.

The pick up was painless and I got the car right away. The guy checking the car for scratches when you pick it up is very thorough - make sure you look too though.

They didn't push me on getting all the extras either, which is a plus. I had a good experience with them.

I got this car rental for $50 on Priceline, thinking it was a great deal. It ended up costing $170, even though they told me when I picked up the car, it would end up being $140. Not only that, it took 45 minutes for the shuttle to pick us up from the airport and drop us off at the rental location. It took another 45 minutes to get through the long line and pick up the car. It took us longer to pick up the car rental than to take the flight from SJC to LAX. Next time, we might as well drive. Or just pay more for a better car rental company.

After calling the company to ask how often the shuttle runs, we were told every 15 minutes. Every other shuttle company seems to run every 7-10 mins. That's just to put the wait time in perspective.

After 20 mins I called back and was told they were one shuttle down. Things happen, I understand. They told me it would be another 10 minutes.

After 15 more minutes, I was getting really annoyed and was told that it would be there shortly. They did come shortly after but when I voiced my feedback on the poorly estimated wait time to Edwin, he just told me the average shuttle time is 20+ minutes with a major attitude. Then don't tell your customers your shuttle comes every 15 minutes!!

After printing the rental contract receipt, we waited  almost an hour for our car to come out. They kept telling us it just came in and just needed to be washed. Every customer that came in after us got their car almost immediately after printing their receipt at the counter. This was not fair.

After speaking to the manager, Shauna (spell check pls!) who was very very unhelpful and insincere with her apology, we were told it was the order the car rental category that made our wait so long. By the way Shauna, we weren't in the category you had stated so that was BS. If you know a customer is waiting and has been waiting then I'd think you'd at least try to expedite the cleaning of the car.

During the inspection of the car, be very mindful of the scratches on it. The cars are not in great condition. The bumpers have a lot of scratches and the security guard checking you out doesn't do a thorough job of inspecting. My hub caps were suuuuper scratched up on the passenger side and she didn't notice it

After getting the car and driving it off the lot, I noticed that the check engine light was on. We were told by someone on the phone that it's not a big deal but to come back to get a new car. Even after I mentioned that I had waited soooo long for the car in the first place, his response was "Well it's up to you but if something happens to the car it's your responsibility". Great.. you make me spend over 3 hours to get a car only to have to come back.

When I got back to exchange the car, Shauna the manager didn't say anything except, "You're going to have to talk to the next manager on duty because I'm going home" as she was walking out. I didn't even ask for her but she was already passing the buck. I told her that I actually didn't need a manager but she was already half way out the door. She didn't care.

Finally, after returning the car, Daniel who helped me with the return printed my receipt and I noticed the final price was higher than quoted the day before. It turns out, if you drive less than 100 miles on your car, the system AUTOMATICALLY charges you for the full tank of gas even if you've declined it at the contract signing. So beware of this shady "glitch" in the system. Daniel said it was by mistake, but if it's done automatically by the system if you drive less than 100 miles then they should fix this.

My mistake for trying to go with the cheapest car rental company. But STAY AWAY if you don't have 3+ hours to spend trying to get a car.

Every time I go home to Cali, I use Advantage. Why? It's quick, simple, and they have great deals on economy cars. The staff are friendly, and efficient. Will continue to rent from them!

Cheap but new rental cars. Shuttle is small but efficient.  For pickup, waited 1.5 he's for a car b/c they ran out. Ended up getting cars brought over from Hertz (parent company).

The one positive is that the manager comp'd me (and others) a day's rental, which was nice but didn't get past the terrible experience. Great price but not sure I would rent from them again after that experience.

You can't beat the price here.

I rented a car for three days at $25 dollars a day. That is with limited liability insurance and gas. Minus one star for not having more shuttles around. Waited about 20 minutes till it arrived while the other rental companies had more coming every 5 minutes.

I'll preface my review with, I used to work here.

This place is a trainwreck, that saves you money and increases your headaches, and the company's own headaches.

When I was here this place was a self-induced clusterbang. The computer systems are a step above an abacus. Most of the agents have English as their second or third language. Nice people, but when dealing with English speaking customers, it would behoove all if the company hired English speakers.

    OK the two redeeming points:
The place is open 24 hours, but God help you if you are driving around Inglewood late at night.

The prices are cheap; and you will get what you pay for.

What you save in $$ you spend in Aspirin.

My company suggested I use Avis. I think they were right.

Yes, Advantage rent-a-car is super cheap. I will give them that, but their Customer Service is HORRIFIC! When I got into the car and realized the tank was only 1/2 full (instead of the typical full tank) I went back inside to let them know. Of course, they did not believe me. They sent not one, not two, but THREE people out to double..uh I mean triple check. They made me feel like I was lying to them on purpose- just for a 1/2 tank of gas. It was totally unprofessional-but yes....they were cheap.

It always comes down to money!

Advantage is owned by Hertz, so you get the same cars, but not the service or -- most importantly -- the cost. Prices are hella better, and you get what you pay for. So bear with the skeleton crew staff, the lines, the spartan decor, etc., and focus on what car you're getting.

I rented a Chevy Cobalt for the last two weeks and liked it a lot. Now I've got a Mazda3 and don't like it as much. it's got this weird almost-manual gear that, if you accidentally shift into it, will freak you out with the revving.

For the last five years, I've been loyal to Budget, but Advantage costs a ton less, and the cars are just as good. You have to put up with a little more, but consider the savings, and you'll breathe a little easier.

The customer service was great.  Pick up and drop off was easy and quick.  The car that we rented was in great condition and had no problems.

The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars was because upon pickup, we were told we could pay in cash, which we wanted to.  But when we got there, they said the only way we could pay with cash was if we had exact change.  We didn't so we ended up paying with a card we didn't want to.  No biggie, but it would've been nice to pay in the method that was our first choice.

    Nonetheless, great service and car!

    Smooth Sailing all the way.

I was a little nervous when I booked the car because I read some reviews and saw that the only big problem was the shuttle.

Luckily, we walked out of the airport and the shuttle was driving right up to the terminal. We only waited about 2 mins for it to stop.

The ride is about 5 mins to the car rental agency and the driver was very helpful. The check in was very easy, no high pressured sales pitches. I mentioned to him I had my own insurance and he said it was not a problem. He asked me if i wanted to purchase the full tank now instead of having to full it up on my own before i returned the car and I did choose the option. I figured I would have ended up paying double at the end anyway. I was also a little nervous since I am not 25 so of course there was the underage fee of 15 dollars a day. But everything went very smoothly. Also, when you use a debit card there is a place hold of $140 on the card as stated in the terms and conditions. I received the back the full 140 within two days from returning the rental.

The total of the car was exactly what i was told on line.

The car was a 2010 Nissan Versa, very clean and was waiting for me. I did not have to wait for the car. The agent even showed me how to use cert in features of the car since I myself have a chevy.

Before leaving the parking lot, the car is checked and the scratches are noted before I left. Just some minor scratches I couldn't even see until he pointed them out to me.

I returned the car, as planned, the shuttle was waiting there for me and I was return back to the airport as promised..

I would recommend this location to anyone renting in the los angeles area.

Was in LA for business and needed to rent a car.  One of the tricky things about my rental was that I was picking up at LAX and dropping off at Burbank.  My travel agent set me up with Advantage.

I guess one of my first positives notes is that once I got out of the airport, there was the Advantage Bus waiting to take me to the car rental area.  We drove a bit to the other terminals and finally off to the car rental spot.  The location is on an old car lot in a sketchy part of LA.  It's about a 5-10 minute drive once we left the airport, so if you are in a hurry, it's going to kill you.

I stepped inside and the place was nice.  There was only one person at the desk so it took a while.  Once I got there, they had everything.  The insurance rates seemed a bit high but since the company was paying for it, I got it anyways.  The car was nice and fueled.  Nothing majorily wrong with it and in the end with the insurance and fuel options paid about $250 for a standard size car.

Overall, solid experience, would come back if not in a hurry, and give Advantage Rent-A-Car a solid 3 star rating.

The price was good. Total $64 after taxes & fees for three days. The transaction was easy and smooth. They did not spend too much time trying to sell extra services and insurances to us. It took about five minutes for us to get our car after we arrived at their place.

The only thing is, we waited for around 20 minutes for the shuttle to pick up (I saw several hertz and enterprise shuttles passed by when we were waiting).

I got my car from Advantage through using Priceline, and though I wouldn't have picked them (what can I say, I'm a little wary of getting stuck with a bad car in a town like LA where I absolutely need one), it turns out this Hertz-owned company is a perfectly good place to pick up a car.

We got picked up from the airport fairly quickly, and didn't even have to wait long. They have one shuttle to the airport every fifteen minutes, which if you just miss it I guess is a lot like missing the F train in Brooklyn on the weekend, and then having to wait for the next one. Not interminable, but not exactly the most convenient.

Of course, it's LA, and always nice so it doesn't really matter that much.

Nice guys at the front counter, who upgraded us after they didn't have any more cars in our reserved level and pointed us in the direction of the most popular local cuisine (In-n-Out in this case).

At the end of the day, they got us a good car, got us directions to the hotel effectively and didn't charge us too much, which is exactly what I want out of a car rental company.

Found Advantage through Kayak but went directly to their own website to book my car for an October visit to LA. The shuttle picked me up within minutes of my walking out to the arrivals area, but other passengers on my run had apparently been waiting for a long time and were very unhappy. I reserved an economy size car for an insanely cheap rate and was upgraded to a midsize because they were out of Chevy Aveos. It wasn't my preference; I like to drive small cars for the better gas mileage, but the "upgrade" didn't bother me one bit. The folks working there were friendly enough - they even told me I could have waiting in the priority line since I'd done all my booking online. The only reason I'm using Budget on my next trip instead of Advantage is because I have a fear that the shuttle could be delayed for me like it was for my fellow travelers. But, if you're looking for a super cheap and relatively hassle free car rental in LA, you'll most likely be happy with Advantage.

I was nervous about my upcoming car rental (see previous Fox rental car review) so I appreciate Advantage's ability to restore my faith in rental car companies.

The delicate dance of airport to driving off in my rental car took about an hour - amazing since I had an elderly couple and Japanese family in front of me in line.  The car was brand new (Pontiac 'model number here') and drove very nicely.    They were out of GPS devices - which would have shaved about five hours of traffic time from my three day visit - but who can fault them for that.

An all around pleasant experience for a great price.  Recommended if you don't want to deal with the big dogs.

Advantage was less than half the price of the more recognizeable name brands. I've had mediocre experience with Fox rental car before and was a little nervous about Advantage. Based on the reviews, which mostly said the biggest downfall was waiting for the shuttle to come, I figured waiting an extra 20 minutes for the shuttle was worth saving almost $1,000. We only waited about 10 minutes for the shuttle and we were one of two parties on it, so we got taken care of right away. Service was competent and polite.

We rented the car for 2 weeks and one day, grand total of $425. This is a pretty darn great deal in LA. I thought maybe we'd get an older car, one that was retired by Hertz, but ours turned out to be a 2010 model with pretty low mileage.

The only reason they're getting 4 stars is because we booked a mid-sized car and got a Nissan Versa. It's really an economy sized car, but again, for the price, I'm not too upset. And, we learned to love our little car... it served us well. Full disclosure, they did also offer us a Toyota Corrolla, but I'm too neurotic to trust a Toyota yet on a long car ride. The Nissan was great.

Anyway, I think this place is a gem. I'd definitely rent from them again.

Seeing the three-star average here, I was skeptical. but as another wise Yelp poster mentioned, people don't often Yelp about their satisfactory experiences - only the amazing and horrible ones. And more often than not, the latter comes out more often.

My experience with Advantage was easy, affordable, and straightforward. Upon landing at LAX, I waited 12 minutes for a bus. During my wait, the following other buses passed by:

    Dollar: 1
    Enterprise 1
    Hertz 4
    Alamo/National 2
    Fox/Payless 2
    Avis 1

Clearly Advantage does not have the massive fleet the others do. That translates into my all-in cost of $35 for two days, which comes at the expense of a little convenience. Consider though that the next best price was over $90 PER DAY. I think 12 minutes of waiting is a small price to pay for that kind of savings!

Once I arrived, I was the first one in the terminal and was checked out in less than 10 minutes! The woman helping was a doll and the only bad thing is that she "upgraded" me to a Chevy HHR, which is the shittiest car EVER. This is no reflection on the service, but seriously this car is like flying a plane (tiny cockpit windows which make you claustrophobic and limit your field of vision).

The only slip up was upon returning the car on a Thursday morning at 5 AM, the bus going to the airport was delayed so I barely made by 6:30 flight. But all in all, I was very pleased with these guys and will be patronizing them again in future!

After shopping around online we found advantage rent-a-car to be the most inexpensive. We normally go with enterprise, but after they overcharged us last time we used them, we decided to go elsewhere. We ended up paying $105 for a two day rental, including the under 25 renters fee. We arrived to the rental counter at about 8am on a sunday morning to no lineup and a friendly clerk. The process was quick and painless. He gave us the keys to a beautiful Mazda 3 and we were all set. We expected him to walk us outside to do a walk through and inspection like they normally do at enterprise, but that was not the case. Instead we were handed a piece of paper outlining all of the damages, dings and scratches on the car. After my boyfriend did a thorough inspection of the car himself, making sure all of the damages on the car matched up with those on the description we were left the lot.

Returning the car is when we ran into some issues. The clerk this time came out to do the inspection upon its return and immediately asked if we had gotten into an accident, which we absolutely DID NOT. He was extremely unprofessional. He kept trying to tell us there was new damages and that we wrote in ourselves new damages on the piece of paper they gave us when we go the car. This would have been absolutely impossible because it was a carbon copy and it would have been very obvious if we used pen to mark in anything else. After aruging with this gentleman for a good 10 minutes, he finally dropped it. If they had done their job in the inital check out we would not have had this issue. Huge turn off!!

Overall we would probably go through them again if we needed another rental, just make sure they follow the proper procedures so we don't run into this problem again.

The shuttles from LAX to the store seemed pretty frequent which is good.

However, like a lot of things in LA, this place needs a facelift - Pronto. The building was rusty, the floors grimey, just really rundown. The other car rental places in the area just seemed so much pretter.

They use Chrysler cars here which are fine. I requested a compact/standard sized car but they gave me a Jeep Liberty - People, do you know how much gas prices are!? Dayumm! Oh well, at least I didn't have to pay for the "upgrade" - oh wait, i did, in the form of gas!! grr.

I won't lie though, the Jeep was a fun car, i was able to check SO many curbs worry free. And the car was kinda cute.

Returning the car was somewhat easy... it took a little while to get a receipt - actually it took forever, so i just left without my receipt and jumped on the shuttle to avoid missing my flight.

I'd probably rent from them again, but I'd feel better about it if they'd remodel their shop and improve customer experience.

I rented an economy car through a phenomenal Priceline rate.  Pickup at LAX was prompt, there was no line when I got there, service was courteous and efficient.  Unfortunately, they geve me the economy car I paid for.  LOL!

Same on the return - no line, prompt check in, bus took off to LAX quickly.

All good.  Sure, they offered all the add-ons, but were not pushy in the least...

Horrible horrible car rental - to be avoided even if cars given out for free! We reserved a car via priceline several days in advance. Price was awesome. Got to LAX, waited ~12 mins for a shuttle (not too bad, but EVERY other shuttle passed by 3-4 times while we were waiting). The shuttle we got on quickly got full and we had to stop at every other terminal and tell other Advantage customers to wait for the next shuttle. Some people got on anyways and were standing on the way to the car rental place. Got to Advantage. The line was depressingly long. People were not able to fit in the building. I asked one of the attendants how long the approximate wait is and he said "an hour" with a face like it's normal. I mean... it took me an hour to fly from SFO, dude! I asked him where is the nearest car rental agency and how to get there. They said to walk 5 mins. Was more like 10 mins in the rain - but  it was so worth the walk!!! :-) Walked to Alamo, quick great service, got the cheapest car and got out. BTW, had similar experience in San Diego with Advantage. Was willing to forgive them, but not after 2 times! NEVER AGAIN will I go to ADVANTAGE car rental!

I rented from Advantage last week and was skeptical, never having used them before.  I usually use Priceline and get great rates, but for this trip I was getting nowhere with Priceline, maybe b/c I did not have a weekend day in the trip.  I got a good rate from Advantage (less than half the cost of the big 5 rental agencies), car was a clean Nissan Versa with 6,000 miles on it. Waiting time in the office was okay, the expected upgrades and other things were offered but not stuffed down my throat.  I simply refused them all.  Returning was really fast and am employee even ran out to the shuttle to ask the driver to wait for us.  No luck with getting an upgrade but whatever, that was okay.

My only complaint was with the waiting time for the shuttle to come to LAX to take me to the car.  I waited 15-20 mins, while another guy also waiting said he waited a total of 35 mins.  We watched all the other car rental shuttles passing by numerous times and people were getting picked up within 5-10 mins.  Still, not a bad deal as I probably saved $80 renting through Advantage.

I always make my rental car reservations (about 10 per year) at http://www.iflyswa.com, Southwest airlines. This rental was at LAX for two days.

For this trip, Hertz and the other good on-airport companies were about $80 per day, plus fees. Advantage was $10. I splurged and went for a full size car, which was $16, plus fees, which took it up to $35, with no insurance.

There was a little wait at the Purple sign for Rent a Car. Avis won the frequent bus contest, with about 4 buses before I saw the Advantage bus. Hertz had three. I think with either Hertz or Avis I would have saved 10 minutes at this point.

Advantage had a nice bus, with an OK driver, and the drive is bad because you have to drive past a bunch of other rental places, including Hertz. But it's really not that bad because once you get to Advantage, you are right at the 405 freeway, you really don't go out of your way at all. If you rented Hertz, you would have to drive this way anyway. So the longer bus ride does not cost you, unless you are going to Playa Del Rey or Westchester.

Advantage is really close to the LA landmark Randy's Donuts.

Desk people were fine, check out security was fine, car was Honda Accord which was fine. Check in was fine and the bus back to the airport was fine, I did have to wait for it, but I was early anyway.

I think Advantage cost me about 20 minutes total, about 10 coming and going. But I saved about $160. ymmv

What Heath said about Hertz is right. They own Advantage. So some of their systems (check in) are being implemented. This is good. I also would like to believe I would have some recourse. I'm a Hertz renter for the last 20 years...

Good service, great rates, easy to transfer from LAX to counter. That's pretty much all I ask for with rent a car places. And there was no line at all mid-day so that is even better. A definite move up from the majors.

I agree with Stanley K's review, this rental company is DIRT CHEAP, got a killer rate off http://priceline.com, when I was planning a business trip down to LA for a couple of days with my business partner.  Almost  ended up not taking the offer on Priceline because it wasn't a Hertz or Alamo...thought it was a rent-a-clunker situation! HA!  A friend told us that he had used Advantage and that it was fine so we took a chance. We rented a compact car, and had no problems!   The only complaint I had was that the shuttles should have come more frequently! Just plan on waiting 20 minutes or so...
Im not quite sure about the other reviews saying that the car lot was in the middle of nowhere, I thought that it was pretty much in the general vicinity of all the other rental places and the building was like any other rental place, maybe it was remodeled.
Service reps were really nice and knowledgeable and got us out the door in minutes.  We will definitely rent from Advantage on our next trip to LA!
PS- Advantage is owned by Hertz.  That's what the customer service reps told us.

How fickle am I?  Started of with one star and now I'm up to 4 because when I returned the rental, the supervisor gave me a generous credit for the upgrade fees I incurred!  Wow!  it pays to keep asking nicely for some kind of break.

The price was great and the car was awesome, but make sure YOU inspect the care before you leave the lot...take pics if necessary.  We hadn't rented a car in 10 yrs and when we asked the security person about some scratches, she said we didn't need to worry about anything....when we dropped the car off, the front passenger side tire had a mark on it and we were told we would have to buy a new tire, but they wouldn't tell us how much it would be and we weren't sure if it wasn't already there....the other guy inspecting looked at it and said "that is so petty, I wouldn't have even said anything to you about it."  He also said someone should have gone over the car with us before we left.  Everything else was great until that happened.

I needed to rent a car for a week in LA and called around different places. Advantage was the easiest to deal with on the phone by far so I went with them. When I returned the car, I didn't realize until I got back to the airport that I had left my jacket in the back seat of the car. They were so accommodating and had the next shuttle driver bring it to me at the airport. I would definitely rent from Advantage again based on customer service alone. Good prices too.

I have rented twice through Advantage, and both times I had pleasant experiences. I got really good daily/weekly rates and the deposit (necessary if you only use a debit card) is only $180 instead of up to $400 that most other affordable companies charge. The customer service is pretty good and I got a free upgrade (larger car) one time since they didn't have the less expensive one available. **As with most car rental companies, I don't recommend buying insurance online through a third-party company. You may think you're getting it through Advantage, but it usually isn't comprehensive and it would be more difficult to deal with a claim in the event it's necessary.** Buy insurance at Advantage if you don't have full-coverage CA insurance--it's well worth it! I'm from LA, so I know there are many crazy drivers there! Check in and check out is usually quite fast and easy and there shuttle service is very efficient. I have read other reviews here that are not stellar, but my personal interactions with this company have been excellent so far.

cheapest rate I could find.  was worried about the customer service and shuttles to/from airport because of some of the reviews, but everything went smoothly and the people working there is SUPER friendly and helpful.  within two minutes of walking out of the airport, we got onto the shuttle and within two minutes of dropping off the car, we were on our way back to the airport.  One thing I hated was the variety of cars they had - there wasn't any.  Hated the car, but loved the service.  Will come back again.

No way ever again.  Went with them as they were the cheapest for a weekend rental.  Yep, get what you pay for.  First I had to sign a waiver that I wouldn't smoke in the car and wouldn't you know the car I had wreaked of it!  Then the passenger visor flapped around then I returned the car with a full tank and when I check my receipt later they charged me for 2.5 more gallons!  It was FULL!!!!  They said nope and refused to do anything else.  No more.  They were cheaper by about $8/day and they made up for it in the gas charge.

NEVER RENTING FROM THIS PLACE AGAIN!  Had to wait 40 min for the shuttle to pick us up from LAX, then took another 1hr to get the keys to the car. The place looks like a run down rental car business.  I would pay the extra $20 for better customer service, and a routine shuttle service at other rental car providers.
