I am very satisfied with the work done on my home by AHE. They insulated my attic and floors and installed a new water heating system, a new furnace, and removed all the asbestos. Every person was very pleasant and responsive, workers were careful, putting on booties every time they came into the house and cleaning up after themselves, and the work was efficiently done, with minimal disruption. The office staff was also excellent with follow-through, taking care of small issues that needed fixing, and getting all the paper work through for rebates. Now I'm just waiting for the checks to arrive. Thank you especially to Marisa and Shiloh, Dvir and all the crew.

Do NOT use Advanced Home Energy. They do not stand by their work or the work they supposedly inherited from Recurve. Their customer service is unresponsive and arrogant because they have 'so much business'. Take yours elsewhere.
Full story: Last year we had Recurve do a lot of work on our house as part of a two phase project. They finished phase one end of the 2011 winter season. In Dec. we discovered much of the work was not doing its job nor did we have a final energy assessment. Upon calling to get everything fixed and to initiate phase 2 I was referred to Advance Home Energy. AHE gave me the run around for about a month then said (summarized) sorry, we cannot help you, call recurve, and had no interested in doing phase 2.
At first i thought I had misunderstood, but they actually sent me an e-mail saying as much. Business must be good to treat former and potential customers this way.
The story continues by trying to reach Recurve and AHE to get to the bottom of this figuring it might just be one rouge employee. Despite numerous attempts to contact executive at the company, I have heard nothing. Being in the start up community, I have thought about calling up Shasta, Recurve's investor.
Vote with your $$$ - there are plenty of other options for home energy work out there. -

Back in November 2010 we had Recurve install a mini-split airconditioner for our bedroom. It was a big project because of the location and structure - very expensive - but we hoped it would be worth it for those occasional hot SF evenings where the house doesn't cool down.
Then we got our first mini-heat wave in June 2011, went to turn on the air conditioner and it was dead. Called Recurve and found out their construction division had been bought by AHE. I assumed we were screwed.
Called AHE. They were incredibly responsive and took full responsibility for the Recurve work. They didn't just schedule us for an appt. in a few days or weeks. They asked one of their techs to come out very early the next morning, before he went in to work for his regular 10-hr day!
They guy was great. Quickly found the problem and did the repairs.
Now that is great service worthy of a 5 star rating.
We will sleep comfortably tonight. -

After writing my review (see below), Ori, the president of Advanced Home Energy, contacted me. He apologized for the problems I experienced.
I appreciate his taking the time to look into what went wrong. He said he didn't want to point fingers at any one person, but essentially most of my issues were one person's fault and, because of this incident, he let this person go.
I was surprised (and dismayed!) that my review led to someone being fired, but I can only hope that the issues I experienced were an ongoing problem with this employee that had been addressed and had not improved.
He told me that the material used in our fireplace work had not been a problem in the past and they were taken aback that it failed the inspection at our house. I totally understand that, but still, the first installation was not the correct size to block the flue opening.
Ori offered to make it up to me. Since we already have different contractors working on the other projects on our house, he offered me a Home Depot gift card or the services of a cleaning crew once our projects were complete. I appreciated the offer, but ended up declining it (those pesky morals!). I almost talked myself into accepting, since we had paid extra for the "hand-holding" experience, but essentially that service was to have AHE handle the inspections and paperwork, which they did.
So I've updated my rating from 2 stars (Meh. I've experienced better.) to 3 stars (A-OK.). I think this accurately reflects my feelings.
Final thoughts: if you hire AHE and are having any issues at all, ask to speak to management right away. I kept thinking I just needed to be patient, but in this case, I think the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Ori seems committed to researching and fixing problems, so if you're having one, let him know!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We used Advanced Home Energy in conjunction with the Energy Upgrade Alameda program earlier this year and we've now had some cold winter nights and hot summer days in our newly insulated home. Our house is much more comfortable now, and they helped us get a $2,500 PG&E rebate and deduct our materials from our taxes.
We definitely recommend working with them. Our house had some peculiar attic issues (e.g., no access and a very narrow crawlspace), but they were able to figure it all out. Everyone we worked with was incredibly friendly and the guys who did the actual work on our house were great. The only reason we're holding back from a 5-star rating is that sometimes their communications weren't great. (I even had to remind them to send me an invoice.) However, that doesn't detract from the fact that they were very pleasant to work with and did a great job. -

We live in an L-shaped mid-century modern home -- think big windows, lots of sliding glass doors, all single-paned. While we love the indoor-outdoor experience of our home, ENERGY is a big issue for us.
Last summer AHE came in promptly to do an energy audit. Of course the windows and doors were a major issue, but we made it clear that we're not going to touch them. Still, founds lots of ways to help us minimize our energy costs, and make our home more comfortable. Insulation, wrapping heating ducts, etc. Even found a heating duct that had been sliced open by contractors hired by the previous owners, and never capped off.
We split the proposal into two phases, doing one "wing" of the L in each phase, with the bedroom L first. Our first winter with proper insulation was warm and toasty, AND with lower gas bills. Can't beat that. -

I called at least three companies that install closed cell spray insulation for home insulation and Advanced Home Energy was the most responsive. Not only did they ask me intelligent questions about my project, but they provided all the specifications and material information I needed to confirm the quality and safety of their product. The insulation they used exceeded the R-value requirements for my project as well.
Every aspect of the job was performed as well or better than I expected. They came when they were scheduled to and finished the project in one day. The price I was quoted was the price I was charged. I'm not sure what more to say, other than I would and have recommended to my fellow professionals. -
Review from Andrew C.
After posting my review I was contacted by Ori, the President of AHE. He apologized for my experience and offered to do a free walk-through of our house to see if there were any obvious recommendations that could be made for saving energy without going through a full energy audit.
I agreed and we set a date.
Ori was extremely friendly and professional during his visit. He wore booties through the house, taking them off when we went into the crawl-spaces. I liked that he wasn't afraid to get dirty poking around under the house!
During the almost 2 hours we spent going through the whole house and entire crawl space, we found a number of insulation and air-sealing issues that should be addressed and should definitely help with our comfort and energy bills. He also had some good ideas on keeping the house cooler in the summer without having to install central air-conditioning.
Lastly he honestly told me that he didn't think we needed to pay for a full Home Energy Audit from AHE or any other company.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I can't tell you what a difference Advanced Home Energy has made in my life!
First off, John Kidda (the "Auditor" - don't worry, he doesn't work for the I.R.S.!) came by. He was great! Friendly, professional, and INCREDIBLY informative.
After a few days he sent me an amazing report detailing exactly how and where I was losing energy. Now, I should mention that I was motivated by the rebates, so the percentage that the work would reduce my energy usage was very important to me.
We talked for a bit on the phone, and he explained a couple parts of the report that I was a little confused about. A few days later he came by to my home with a finalized contract and the gig was on. A little while later someone from the office called me to schedule the work (Chiloh? I forget her name). She was polite and helpful and up to this point the whole thing was just fine.
Then came the important part: the work itself (cue dramatic music)...
First, they had an asbestos abatement specialist remove the old scary asbestos ducts (I'll pass on cancer, thanks). They were done in a day, and I barely met them because as soon as they started working I had to go to an appointment.
Next came the H.V.A.C. crew. Teddy and the other guy (sorry other guy, I forgot your name because I mostly talked to Teddy) came in and demoed out the furnace, then went straight into installing the new one. Three days later they were done. Ever had that old furnace smell? Well, it turns out mine was caused by a cracked heat exchanger. I HAD CARBON MONOXIDE LEAKING INTO MY HOUSE WHENEVER IT WAS COLD! And here I thought I should have been worried about the asbestos. Anyhow, the new furnace is a two stage model, so one stage just maintains the heat, and when that's running I don't even know it's on unless I go stand by a heater vent. The other stage is the turbo stage, which kicks on if the house is super cold and has to be warmed up quickly. The whole thing (furnace and ducts) are all super insulated in "astro foil" and now instead of some cancer monster in the middle of my garage, I have this shiny kinda Star Wars (yes, I am a geek) looking thing off to the side. Not only did I get a hyper efficient (96% efficient baby!) furnace, but I also have more room in my garage now, because they moved the furnace for me.
Then came the insulation.
Ramone and his crew did a FANTASTIC job. They were friendly, helpful (helped me move some furniture), and courteous. I asked them if they would watch out for Ninja (my cat). Ramone explained that they were going to be working pretty hard, and that he was afraid they wouldn't keep good track of the cat. He said that maybe we could put the cat in the bedroom. Unfortunately, that's where the attic access is, so the bedroom was no good.
He went out to his truck and pulled out a piece of plywood he had handy that he used to block off the living room from the dining room. GENIUS! Ninja had her own play pen, and the workers could go in and out as they needed without fear of Ninja vanishing. Also, as an added bonus when I came back from running a few errands I found that someone had put Ninja's water bowl (and the mat it lives on) in the room with her.
One of the things they did for me was to blow recycled fiber insulation into the attic, and when they did that they made a tunnel sort of contraption out of painters plastic and rolls of paper. It worked pretty well (though there was some dust left over when they were done, I won't hold that against them though, they can't really be expected to clean out the air) and it made me feel like I was going through an airlock whenever I walked past it.
After that they finished building the attic storage platform. I had this huge attic but couldn't keep anything up there. They built me a huge space up there, so guess where all my holiday decorations are right now? Not in my closet or the garage.
It took the two days all told (they also did floor insulation and "air sealing")
Ramone said that sometimes these size jobs take a little bit longer, but they worked hard and got it all done quickly.
Here's what I found out: If I knew what a difference in the quality of life their work would make, I would have had the work done without any rebates at all! My house is 10 degrees warmer without me having to turn on the heater! I have an old (1914) Victorian, and to say it was drafty is like calling the north pole "a little icy"! Now it's gone from drafty to toasty! I am currently writing this at almost 9 pm and I'M NOT EVEN WEARING A SWEATER!
Seriously, it makes me wonder how I could ever stand to live in this house when it was so uncomfortable. I used to just bundle up/huddle under a blanket with my sweetie, and I thought that was fine. Now when we watch a movie we're warm and aren't afraid to get up for a glass of water - it's like we're alive again!
Thank you Advanced Home Energy! -

After posting my first review a few days ago, I received an email from Dvir; a co-owner of AHE. Dvir just returned from a two-week vacation and perhaps this is why my job fell through the cracks. Long story short, Dvir came to my home, listened to my experience, was genuinely wanting to understand what went wrong in order to learn from this experience and he apologized. I'm left with a more positive view of AHE.

San Francisco, CA
We lived in a old, cold un-insulated in the Sunset. After paying ridiculous PG&E bills for 10 years, we wisened up and decided to make the investment in insulating our house. It was a great decision to do it, and it was a better decision to use Advanced Home Energy.
Dvir came out, evaluated our home and gave us his proposal. He was friendly, intelligent and worked with us to come up with a plan that we cold afford.
It's been 2 weeks since we've been insulated, and it's a huge, noticeable difference. We're still enshrouded in fog every day, but our heater doesn't come on EVERY morning (like it used to). On those mornings when we do have to have heat, the heat stays in longer, so we usually only go through one cycle on the heater.
AHE uses all "green" products. Every worker they had was friendly and clean - from the electrician who does the pre-insulation check, to the guy who came back to finish off the wall project. And they work with you to get your PG&E rebate done properly.
Highly recommend this outfit! -

Strike 1: About an hour before the appointment time for an audit they called to reschedule. I understand that things come up unexpectedly, but this did not make a good first impression.
Strike 2: A few days after the audit, I called to follow up on the estimate for work, leaving a message which was not returned.
Strike 3: I called few days later and was assured by a receptionist that the contractor would get back to me with an estimate the next day. This did not happen.
I wanted to consider hiring them, but they made it impossible. I'm sure they have their excuses, like it's a very busy time of year and perhaps my job is not big enough. All I know is I cannot stand to have my time treated as unimportant. -

I dealt with AHE when they were located in Oakland, just over 3 years ago. They gave me a very fair rate to install attic vents and insulation. They did the work in a timely manner.
After the heavy rains we had this winter, 2 of the vents leaked. I called the new office in Richmond and they quickly responded. They replaced and upgraded all the attic vents, covered by warranty.
I would definitely recommend AHE for other insulation/venting jobs. -

PROS: They're very nice, attentive, Insulation crew rocks
CONS: Seemed more focused on getting my business than completing it
After a so-horrendous-it-was-comical experience with All Seasons Insulation of Pleasant Hill, I was very pleased to find Advanced Home Energy. Ori was very friendly and thorough on the phone, and very patient with my concerns and scheduling peculiarities.
The job on my attic was to be done by 2 of their crews, and possibly at different times, but we did schedule for one day: the Construction crew would install the pull-down attic door/stairs and the attic ceiling fan, as well as move a subfloor so it could hold more insulation. The Insulation crew would then do the tests and blow in the cellulose fiber. The prices were on the average-to-high range, but I felt good about supporting their company.
The Insulation crew arrived on time and ready to roll. I called Ori who said the Construction crew wasn't yet finished with their previous job and that Insulation could start without them. That they would have to crawl up a ladder into a 20" x 24" opening instead of through a door with stairs to do their work didn't faze them a bit.
In fact, they ended up moving the subfloor themselves, because the Construction crew never showed up, nor did I receive a call updating me as to their availability, one way or another! In all fairness, I had told Ori that if they didn't complete the construction work the same day as the insulation that I reserved the option to have someone else do it. But to never show up or even call seemed a little lame...
Also, the air-sealing tests were performed by removing my front door, and seemed to ignore the substandard weatherstripping around it - it's autumn now, and I'll have to replace it myself as the winds are whistling...just seems like the kind of thing a whole-house test & inspection would have covered!
I wish I remembered their individual names, because I can't say enough about how well the Insulation crew did - they were so conscientious, hard-working, and inventive about problem-solving. It was hot, grungy work in cramped quarters, and they were fabulous. I would hire them again in an instant!
Overall, I felt the company was really attentive in securing my business and the resulting payment, performed the work they did do very well, but were not so hot in communicating to ensure the job was completed... B+ -

As a general Contractor we come in contact with many sub-contractors and suppliers; Advanced Home Energy simply stands above the crowd.
They are knowledgeable in their field as well as bringing a very Green product and approach to the job, which in turn allows us to pass this good news along to our clients. 100% of our clients appreciate this approach and that only makes us look better.
The owners and company's philosophy goes well beyond just selling and installing insulation; they have a complete understanding of the energy needs and uses, hvac (heating) systems, all with a long vision goal of comfort and savings and the best application of several product choices.
On several occasions I have a had building official (the inspectors) note the good work and give us kudos for having a great Co. like Advance Home Energy be part of our network. -

Our experience with AHE was very good. Ori and his crew came out to our 1926 insulation-free house in Berkeley and helped us develop an affordable plan for being warmer.
We had originally intended to just do attic insulation, but ended up adding on some weather stripping based on where the whole-house test they ran showed major drafts. The work was done on time and they were very tidy about what could have been a messy process. And they used a fairly eco-friendly option, which was important to me.
We found them through Berkeley Parents Network, where a lot of people had good things to say about them, and were glad we used them. They were sensitive to our budget and were straightforward about how to get the most energy efficiency for the money. -

I am the foreman for a construction company that does residential remodeling in Oakland and San Francisco. We were recently remodeling a beautiful home on Telegraph Hill in SF. Our client wanted to insulate the building, both for heat retention, and sound reduction (they could barely have a conversation over the cacophony of barking sea lions down on Pier 39!). We hired Advanced Home Energy to do the work.
Dvir and another guy came out and blew cellulose into the stud bays through 3" holes drilled in the drywall. They realized after doing the first few bays that there were fire blocks every few vertical feet in nearly every bay. This made it necessary to drill a lot more holes to access all of the voids in the walls. Instead of getting discouraged or walking away, they figured out an approach and persevered until it was done. Dvir seemed to be on a mission to fill every void in the walls of that building. Some areas were proving very difficult to access, because of some obstruction, or whatever reason, and we gave him permission to skip those spots... but he wouldn't! He seemed to take great pride in blowing that insulation in the walls to the absolute best of his ability. I was very impressed.
The guys came early and stayed late until it was done (the unit was unoccupied at the time). Later, we had to open up the walls in a couple of random areas to install some wiring. Every place we opened up was completely full of insulation.
I have absolute confidence in this company, in their thoroughness, and commitment to their service. We deal with a lot of subcontractors. The guys at AHE are different. These aren't a bunch of meatheads doing a job they fell into because their daddy did it. These men really seem to care about energy efficiency, and serving their customers in the most honest and thorough way. We wouldn't hesitate to call them again. -

Having been favorably impressed by a presentation given by Advanced Home Energy's CEO at an El Cerrito, Richmond and San Pablo-sponsored symposium on green homes, I hired AHE to do a complete Energy Audit of my house. So impressed was I by the quality of the audit they performed that AHE also ended up taking care of all the problem areas: reinsulating the walls, removing the old asbestos-covered duct system and installing a brand new system, doing air-draft sealing in the crawl space, and providing an April filter for the furnace. Each successive crew was highly competent and meticulous and very personable to boot. I am extremely pleased with the high quality of the work they performed. As an extra bonus, 41% of the work they did was covered by county & utility credits, and AHE took care of all the paperwork involved in securing the rebates. All the folks at AHE seem to have an intellectual passion for the Green work they're doing, and an almost artisanal level of commitment to excellence in their hands-on work. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews on this site. I would not hesitate to recommend them to my own mother.

I met with the salesman, Dvir, a few weeks ago. The work estimate was definitely on the high end for the industry, but we also felt they had a good reputation, so we thought we could trust them.
As the work has progressed, it was clear that the insulation team seems like a really good one - they are very efficient despite there being lots of people involved, and they were very conscientious about cleaning up after themselves so that we could have the house for the weekend before they came back to finish up. The insulation work looks very carefully and thoroughly done, and we can feel differences in the house already. It's also comforting to know that our very old fiberglass insulation has been replaced with recycled cellulose insulation - better for us and the environment.
We did have some issues come up near the end of the work, mostly to do with non-insulation related tasks and with the payment of the final amount at the end of the job, and I discussed these with the owner, Ori. He is very concerned about the business' reputation and really made an effort to smooth over issues. I'm generally ok with setbacks/issues coming up, since it's inevitable that they happen at some point, and I think a good business is responsive to their clients. -

I live in San Francisco with 4 other house-mates. Our landlord kindly gave a green light for energy efficiency upgrades on our home - duct sealing, insulation, blower door sealing, weather stripping, etc.. We called AHE to do an analysis because we were always cold in our house even with the furnace running. They came out and did a very thorough test after which they sat down and explained their findings. We were surprised to discover that the biggest issue was our very leaky duct system and horrible insulation. The previous company we called out told us that we needed to replace our windows and said it would cost $20k. In AHE's report we could see that changing the windows was not a priority item and would not solve our issue. We spent 1/2 that amount with AHE doing their recommendations and our house is now VERY nice and toasty. We feel so lucky that we found these guys.

I'd originally given Advanced Home Energy one star for failing to divulge when I first called their office that they have a $1,000 minimum. The quote they gave on the phone was $300-something. After their guy came to scope out the job, I called back to complain about the three-times-higher quote, and the person I talked to claimed to be unaware of the minimum. This still seems pretty unbelievable, but the owner of the company did contact me to apologize profusely after seeing my review here, so they get big credit for that. I did not hire AHE, and so I cannot speak to the quality of their work, but from reading the other reviews here, it sounds like they do a good job.

We had AHE do an energy audit and then several of the suggested upgrades. I was disappointed that the cost of the audit couldn't go toward the work as I had seen advertised elsewhere, and their price was very expensive. We did get quite a lot of detail out of it though, so I pretty much feel it was worth it. I appreciated the discussion of what work would have the most effect compared to its price in the recommended order of work to do.
The sealing and insulating jobs were done well with friendly professional staff that arrived on time and finished at reasonable hours each day. The work looks great and we received a report afterward on the tested performance improvement.
My problem with AHE though is the very long time it takes for communication every time. It took a long time to schedule work, and more when they needed to schedule a time to come back. It took a month and 2 reminders to get the post-work performance report. We had them organize a plumber and roofer to come out and estimate a possible repiping and solar water heater upgrade, and that took several weeks to schedule, and then several more week to get the estimate results. Meanwhile we just had someone else do the repiping only and finish way before we got the estimate back.
AHE staff definitely know their stuff for energy efficiency, but definitely don't be in a hurry when you want to use their services. -

We originally had Shel Harris come out to take a look at the RECO (Berkeley energy ordinance) work that needed to be done on the house. We weren't too impressed with him, so decided to ask someone else to check it out. From reviews on Berkeley Parents' Network, we found AHE.
We called/emailed AHE, and they were very responsive. Shira and Mira (office) were helpful. Ori came out to check out the house and see what had to be done. He was really nice, and pretty thorough. His quote beat Shel's, and we definitely liked him better, so we went ahead with AHE.
Eugene and his crew did a really outstanding job on the house.
Pros:
-We passed the RECO inspection on the first try. This was not as easy as it sounds--the inspector tried to get us on a technicality (we had to replace a lightbulb on a neighbor's porch with a compact fluorescent--be sure to check this with Ori if you are in a condo). The inspectors are super particular.
-The house stays soooo much warmer in cold weather now! We must've had a lot of the warm air leaking out, and all the new insulation makes a huge difference. Totally worth it in terms of saving on our heating bill. Supposedly it will also make a big difference in keeping the house cool, come summer.
Cons (really, I'd only minus half a star if Yelp would let me):
-We passed inspection by a hair because the inspector was intent on failing us on that technicality mentioned above. It would've been a bit less stressful if we had been forewarned about that.
-The guys were supposed to leave the house 'broom-clean'. While I have no doubt that they did clean up after themselves (and they were also careful to lay down lots of tarp everywhere they went), there were still some large pieces of insulation left, tracking down the stairs.
Side note: I like everyone's name. Maybe Eugene could change his name to Ghiri or something, to match everyone else... -

As a Realtor, compliance w/local energy conservation ordinances is an important disclosure and can be challenging. AHE was prompt, professional, and thorough. Their service included an initial inspection audit, a clear and detailed estimate, and a complete installation. Their work was quick and clean, and the fact that they were able to meet w/the City, and file all the paperwork, made my job easier and the sellers very happy. We live in a home that was built in 1950. The home had no insulation and windows that we starting to fall apart. We met with Ori and got a very competitive quote for new windows. What was even better was the quote included green insulation in the attic, below the house and blown into the walls. All the staff we dealt with was great and helped us through all aspects of the installation process and even helped us to claim energy credits which helped offset the cost of the installation. Our energy savings were noticed almost immediately and our heating bills this winter were 50-75% less than they were last year!

Ori and Ari are fantastic, as are their entire crew. We met Ori at a particularly difficult time, as my wife was ill. The timing also wasn't great because the PG&E rebate on insulating the attic was about to run out at the end of the week. Ori was already booked up well beyond the week and he rushed himself and his crew to get us into his already-full schedule. When the crew arrived, they found a leak in the roof, and some electrical work that needed to be done. They found us a fantastic roofing company that came right out and did the work, and they completed and signed off on the electrical work. All of this basically in record time and with very high quality. All of my communications with these folks was pleasant, caring and thoughtful. My conclusion is that these are good, smart people, doing excellent work. Its very difficult these days to feel like businesspeople really care about you AND the work they do. If you work with AHE, you'll get the pleasure of both. I highly recommend Advanced Home Energy!
