Zoltan and his wife are tailoring magicians! I've been going to them for years (I used to go to their old place a few blocks over) and I never write yelp reviews, but I felt compelled to do so for them cuz it's just so good!!! My body type has constantly changed from flab to fab over the years and his alterations keep up with my fluctuating workout/eating ethic. The tailoring he does is top notch, A+ caliber quality, he always gives me a good silhouette that contours my body in a flattering way, and he notices things that I would never notice in a million years. You get what you pay for and he does the best work in the bay area. I've been to some other tailors, but none of their work made me feel so fresh and awesome as his work does. In fact, when I lived in LA, I'd bring a suitcase of clothes to have tailored through him and pick it up a month later when I returned. LOL! That's how good he is!
I've recommended European Tailoring to my family and now I'm reviewing it to the world. BTW, you can't rush success. If you want something done over night, good luck. If you want something done right, be a little patient. They're busy and they have a large following for a reason. Exceptional work!!! If you're patient, you'll be very pleased with the work! -

Did good work, but $44 is pretty expensive for cuffs and sleeve length, and (as I'll explain below) their reliability and customer service doesn't really meet what I'd call minimal professionalism. I went in on a Friday saying I needed it by Monday night, but since they're closed Mondays that meant by Saturday afternoon (24hr turnaround). Sure, they said. I'll come by as late as possible just in case, I said. They called me at 3pm the next day and left a message telling me it was ready, which O didn't answer because I was on BART headed over there to do so. I get there 3.45, 15 minutes before closing time, and they're already closed. Call the number on the receipt, a full answering machine. Wait around 10 minutes, no dice. Screwed. Went away on business trip without my suit I bought specifically for the occasion.
Then it gets weird. The next saturday, I show up earlier, at 3pm, anticipating that maybe they like to close early sometimes. Repeat: call, no answer, wait, no one comes back. Week later, I go on a Friday at 12.05PM-- same shit. Do I have the worst luck in the world, or do they just disappear for 15 minutes at a time throughout their posted open hours? Even if I just happened to be there the three times they decided to be flakey, that's still three times they were flakey in one month.
And here's the 1-star part. I went in (now a month after they promised me next-day service) and told them all this, they called me a liar to my face, said what had happened to me was categorically impossible. Funny, my watch must be set wrong or something. "10% discount is the most I can do, even though I don't know how that could have happened and it doesn't sound possible" (Verbatim). Yup. -

Better service than I could hope for. I've had many garments altered here, from just shortening sleeves and pants to completely re-cutting a suit for my wedding. I've had many custom clothes made and my suits altered by him fit better than my custom ones.
I agree with some of the other posts about it sometimes being too busy and having to wait, but he's good and he attracts a crowd - I'm willing to wait or come at less busy hours because it's worth it. He does an amazing job. -

I brought in a vintage suit that had belonged to my late father for tailoring.
I'd asked to have the extra fabric saved for the possibility of future repairs. When I picked up the suit they didn't have the fabric. They said they'd search for it and call. They never called. I left a message several days later inquiring and asking for a return call. They never called.
Bad business. I won't return and I won't get that fabric back, ever. -

Zoltan is incredible. He did magic to my vintage suit, which needed a complete overhaul to fit me right. Not only does it fit like a glove but he made designer decisions, with my approval, to enhance the design, i.e.- cuffs. He even helped me decide what kind of hat would work with it for a vintage party I was attending. The guy is a true sartorialist, and a hell of a craftsmen and artist. I feel so lucky to have him do this work.

Zoltan is a great guy who does a great job. He's quick, efficient AND friendly. I've taken many garments to him, including a suit for my wedding, and he and his wife have done a perfect job every time. My wife's stuff, too! Oh, and very fast turnaround as well.
Plus, Zoltan has a mesmerizing accent the I just can't get enough of- I could listen to him read a phone book. I find myself not wanting to leave his shop because his voice is so soothing- yet another reason to look forward to my next visit!
Update: 4/4/2012
Just wanted to add that I had a couple pairs of pants tailored here the other week. When I got home, I tried them on and still wasn't happy about how they fit [not necessarily anybody's fault]. I took them back in to Zoltan and told him this and he happily offered to redo them- NO CHARGE and NO HASSLE. A week later I picked up the pants and now they fit perfectly. Customer service the way it should be- thanks, Advanced European Tailoring! -

Zoltan gets the job done right! Priced right for the service, quality and precision shown in his alteration work. The husband and wife team are very friendly and always express their gratitude for their clients' business. No wonder their business has such high marks in the industry and are always busy.
I'm happy to recommend this business for your alterations needs. They can be trusted even with your precious designer wear (unlike their rivals).
Lastly, be sure to bring and wear your shoes for hems that you'd like adjusted as it does make a difference! -

If you're following my reviews, you'll know that I had to get my son a suit, and that someone had suggested the Goodwill into which the Hillsborough community throws their hardly-worn expensive clothes. I got a great deal, and took it to Zoltan here for alterations.
To his credit, he said he could do the work, but it was going to involve basically re-building the beautiful Italian suit, and for the money we could do better shopping the sales. Although we had a hard time finding something cheaper than what he would have charged us, I really appreciated his honesty.
While I was there (twice), I had the opportunity to see him in action, and see the quality of his service. Garments looked beautiful, his measurement-taking was very professional, and there is also an eco-friendly dry-cleaning service available. I'll be back. -

Zoli and Pugi are more than the best. They always do work of the highest quality.
The BEST thing however, is that they will hem your jeans properly, by sewing the original hems back on after shortening. This is the ONLY way one should wear jeans. Any other hemming looks awful, and leaving them to drag is just plain low class. With the latest styles like sevens and citizens being far too long for your average female leg, take your jeans here to be hemmed perfectly and in a timely manner.
Plus Zoli and Pugi are very nice and will never do anything tacky to your clothes.Listed in: Heroes of Service!, Kat's Best Places 2007

I can't BELIEVE I haven't writen about Adanced European Tailoring sooner!!
Sadness :-(
Nonetheless, I too will add my opinion to my fellow yelpers that this place is fantastic. For my 7 years in Berkeley during school and beyond before crash landing in SF, I took everything that needed any sort of outside care to them. My stylish jeans always turned out great and my coats and cashmere were well cared for.
Zoli and Pugi are very attentive, patient, remember your name if you're as much of a mess as I am, and always always had everything hemmed perfect if not better. After a run with too short hems at other places, I finally found a place that knew what I meant when I said, "not too short, but not too long...just so I don't step on them, but they need to look good in 4 inch heels". Any other tailor's head would have spun off of its axis, but they simply smile and pin away without a care in the world.
They also do leather work for cheap which is nice. (My new ridiculous purse needs some TLC as I managed to thrash it in the first week I had it. Dummy I am!)
I take my stuff to them even though I am in SF, if that tells you how much I adore them!! -
Review from Paul Y.
Oakland, CA
This place is seriously legit: I'm a guy that can't sow to save his life, but who's 5'6 height means that almost every pair of jeans purchased must be hemmed accordingly. After some rotten experiments of my own to resolve this dilemma, I said "let someone else do it," and took my pants to Advanced Euro. At only eight bones a-pop to hem the length on a pair of jeans, now I'm looking good with cash to spare. Plus, their REAL quick, REAL friendly service meant that after buying pants, I felt the instant gratification that most folks experience after coming up on some great new wears - something I hadn't gotten in quite a while.
Big Ups to this establishment! -

This is by far the best tailor I've ever taken my clothes to.
These garment magicians know how to deconstruct clothes only to reconstruct them to make fit better!
These days, I find that I ask myself, "can Zoltan do anything to make this garment look better on me?" chances are, he can (if he can't, he will tell you).
Highly highly recommended; definitely worth the drive if you don't live in Berkeley. -

ok, so, i would love to give this place 6 stars for tailoring and mending. As for dry cleaning they get 2 stars.
The hems on my jeans always look authentic, even if i just get the "regular" hem (instead of "original" hem). They are so quick and always get your tailoring done by the date you ask. Also they will mend tears in your jeans and you will never know they even had a hole. Seriously, they do such a great job. And they are SO nice.
Dry cleaning is another story, they contract out and nothing EVER comes back on time. I always had one or two missing items. They did a quality job of cleaning, but it is just too unreliable.
Go to CAL Cleaners on telegraph for a no fail cleaning job that gets your stuff back super quick.
I think these guys changed location and are somewhere down Shattuck now, may want to check on that. -

It's always a great thing to be able to salvage those cute pair of pants you've always wanted to wear but were too long, or that great skirt, which you never wore because it was slightly too loose and no longer flattering... or too big, or too something.... and then they collect dust and take up space in your closet. You know what I'm talking about.
I brought a couple pairs of pants and skirts here the other week for some alterations.... I am impressed. The lines are clean and the fitting is just right. After all the horror stories I've heard about bad tailors... this encounter with a good tailor makes me want to stick with this one for a while. Will report back after I have a couple more pieces altered. -

I have used Zoltan as my tailor for a few years and I have finally felt compelled to give a review. I am very particular with how I want my clothes altered and Zoltan has always been very patient with listening to my needs and offering suggestions when I ask for advice. Sometimes I have asked for a piece of clothing to be re-altered because I want it to be a little shorter or slimmer and Zoltan has always done it free of charge. He was also happy to give me suggestions on how I could improve the fit on my future MTM shirts.

This was a Yelp find for me a few years back, and I have brought several pairs of pants here for hemming. I am always exceptionally happy with the end result. The pants are always exactly the right length and the hemming is very discreet-looking.
The tailor told me that he now offers that service where they can retain the original hem of jeans. I decided to pass on it since his hem-jobs make my pants look better than those raggedy frayed bottoms that are there when you buy them.
It's $10 for hemming on jeans, $18 if you want the original hem. Also, they definitely close at 6, not 6:30 like their old business card says. -

I'm fat.
When I find pants that fit perfectly in the waist, they are always baggy everywhere else (like clown pants). I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but tailoring is the way to go---for anyone, regardless of the chubby factor.
I took several pairs of pants to Zoltan the tailor at this place and he is amazing. He is super meticulous and really friendly and their prices are quite reasonable.
Now my pants don't scream "90s baggy, skater-punk". Nor do they scream, "scrawny, heroin-chic, underfed, stupid indie kid" either.
Success. -

pretty good! I came to this place based on the yelp reviews and when I called in they said that hemming a pair of pants was $10, cheap!
I've got three pairs of pants that I love but haven't worn because one was too big on the legs, and the other 2 too long... so i'm thinkin' a little over $30 huh? Nah, it was ten bucks just for the hem of the pant, taking them in would cost $12-14. So I got billed for $54 for three pairs of pants. Not my fav price, and they were busy so it was a week before I saw my pants again, but it really was worth it. Not only did they stay open a little later for me so I could drop in for the fitting, but the pants taken in are awesomely form fitting and now i can wear flats with the other two pairs! Thanks Advanced European Tailoring! ..ha! -

I brought in two pairs of pants, one with zippers at the bottom to hem and remove the zippers, and the other that needed the legs to be slimmed. Both were done perfectly and for a great price.

My brother, who is far more stylish than I, gets his shirts tailored, and they look really good. He lives in Fresno and pays about $20 a shirt. So a couple of weeks ago, I took shirt in to be tailored at Advanced European Tailoring.
A guy measured me, asked me about what I wanted, and pinned up the shirt. I think he was Dutch, so the "European" in the title is no lie.
I picked up the shirt a few days later and it was perfect, just like my brother's! It cost $34, which is probably just because everything costs more here. Still, I wish it was cheaper. I don't think I can get all my shirts tailored yet. They don't charge for rush jobs, and their customer service is great. -

Definitely my favorite cleaner in Berkeley.
They are fast, meticulous, friendly and affordable. All the qualities you want from your cleaner. You can alter almost anything there and it's done to perfection. They hemmed my jeans the other day and the thread has a unique color, came out perfect! They can even make the end of your jeans look beat up if you want (but my suggestion, skip it: if you wear around, it probably will look beat up anytime soon). They really ask you for speficications, whether you want your stuff on the long side, the kind of fit that you're looking for, etc.
A good tailor is something everyone should have, so do come here. I know it can be a little expensive sometimes, but this place is still affordable (if you're scared, call ahead to determine the price). And seriously, if people pay 200$ for seven jeans.... might as well get some of your other stuff altered... -

The only tailor I use now! When I was working in LA for a year, I would save the clothes that needed alteration and bring it whenever I came back to the Bay Area. Always on time with quality work and reasonable prices!
Hours kinda suck though. -

this place is great. I took three items of clothing there and ended up only leaving one item with them because after going through my stuff they told me that I could machine wash two of the three pieces. (Yes, I'm an idiot and assumed some pieces were 'dry clean only' without checking the tags first). They could have easily just taken all three pieces to dry clean just to make a few extra bucks off an idiot, but they didn't take advantage of me, and for that I will be a return customer.
oh and the one piece I left for them to dry clean came out clean...I guess that's important too. -

I've always had great results with this tailor. The work is top notch, my pants are always the right length, he is honest with me about when my clothes don't need tailoring and when they do. I've had many bad experiences at other places - hem done wrong, too short, thread wrong color, alterations coming unraveled. None of these problems here. Glad to have someone I can trust with my stuff.

I've had lots of work done by these folks and been happy with all of it. They've hemmed jeans, reshaped skirts and coats, and even patched my favorite jeans when I fell and tore the knee -- you can't even SEE where they fixed it. I would trust them with any repair or alteration.
I've only used the dry cleaning service once, and was happy enough with it.
I've always found the customer service to be cheerful and timely, and the prices reasonable for the quality of work. -

I don't know if I would have found this place had it not been for yelp. I've had them do a pair of jeans, several pairs of slacks and a belt. They've done an excellent job on everything and have been very communicative on how I want the pants done.
No one makes pants my size and I'm glad I've found a tailor that does a great job for on the cheap that is nice and friendly.
This is what I wish other tailors were like. -

Zoltan, you're the tailor of all tailors. Finally my search is over!! Very fast & efficient, extremely knowledgeable, really listens to what you want done & gives his honest, expert advice based on his opinions & experience.
I brought in one of my suits, cuff linked dress shirt, & two pairs of jeans for him to work his magic on. Mind you, best times for a fitting are Wednesday through Friday, after lunch rush to minimize the amount of interruptions & to make it easier on yourself to find parking. Unfortunately, I came in for my fitting during lunch rush on Thursday which resulted in a few interruptions from walk ins. None the less, Zoltan got the job done even being short handed with his wife being out of town.
He ended up getting all my garments done a couple days early in time for my cousin's wedding that Saturday. Every piece was perfect & could not tell any of them were altered in any way. Can't beat his service & work ethic is purely amazing. He is truly one that you can establish a great relationship with if you are a loyal customer. If you're in search of a tailor, look no further. -

Ah crap, I need my dress altered TODAY! So of course I go on Yelp to find one nearby that is great and this place is AWESOME! I'm not a tailor expert. I only went in to get my clothes tailored like twice in my life.
The people there are really friendly and nice. They have two fitting rooms and the guy who fitted me was really sweet. I went in knowing I wanted my dress trimmed, but also something else because it didn't fit right. He took the time that was needed to tell what what needed to be done in order for the dress to fit perfectly even though it was busy. I went in at 3pm and didn't think he would do same day and he was hesitant at first, but was sweet enough to agree.
The cost was $38 for the trim and for alterations to the shoulders on the dress. That seems pricey to me, but I don't anything about alteration prices so I could be wrong.
Whatever! The customer service there is beyond awesome and they know what they're doing. I'm mos def going to go there if I ever need to alter anything. -

I get almost everything I own tailored, which can get expensive and tedious. But LUCKILY I work right by Advanced European Tailoring, which means I get high value, high quality alterations at a very affordable price (with a quick turnaround to boot). Zoltan is the sweetest, most helpful person. He and his wife are usually very busy - whenever I come in, there are customers vying for their attention - and they are both so gracious and patient.
I get anything from jeans hemmed, to shirts, dresses, blouses and jackets shortened and tightened, and so far, everything has turned out perfectly. Next up is this vintage Oscar de la Renta blazer my mom wore in the late 60's. It's been in my closet for the past six years, arms slightly too big and waist a little boxy. Before I stumbled upon Advanced Euro tailoring, I was afraid of it being hacked up in the alteration process. But I'll be taking it to Zoltan next week because I fully trust the job will be done right. -

5 stars for tailoring; 2-3 stars for dry cleaning.
I guess it's my fault for entrusting cleaning into a store whose name implies specializing in tailoring. (I have a thing with names - there's a lot in a name. You know, like all Britneys are divas).
Regardless, Zoli is a great tailor. Efficient and not over-priced. Because Benetton (my favorite store) trends on the longer side, all my dress pants get a treatment here before heading to work. They come back with a nice hem, well-sewn and durable. (I once took pants to a woman back at home who took a few lazy stiches to the hem -- I had to get them re-done in a couple months).
The dry cleaning, unfortunately, leaves something to be desired. Sometimes it's not back when they say it will be (forcing me to take another trip to them, and finding parking around those parts is not easy). Not only that, several times, I've gotten clothes back, and they weren't really cleaned. Or, *gasp* I found a watermark on my suit jacket. Yeah, not a fan.
I still go for the tailoring, but take my dry cleaning to Red Hanger up in N. Berkeley. -

Zoli does the most high-end work I've ever seen, and his prices are extremely reasonable.
The secret to looking great in clothes is having a top-notch tailor. If something doesn't look amazing on you, or if you feel like you look frumpy in your clothes - go see to Zoli. He will instantly identify the problem and magically transform it with his clever alterations. You'll wonder how you ever lived without a tailor like this.
I bring all my coats, dresses, skirts, jackets, and slacks here. If you need further recommendation, Winona Ryder takes her stuff to Zoli when she's in town.
I don't get my dry cleaning done here though. I prefer Clean Living Cleaners on Solano - one of the few eco-friendly cleaners in the bay area. -

Zoltan and his wife are very nice people and good taylors. Zoltan in particular is a kind european man, with good skills in the art of tailoring and great customer service provider.
Maybe a little pricer than other places, but the results and the kindness of the staff are very much worth it.
The new location is centrally located, perfect for anybody walking through Berkeley Downtown. Street parking can be difficult depending on the time of the day, but not impossible. The parking garage next to the shop is a valid alternative.
Very satisfied with this shop. -
Review from Sam L.
Irvine, CA
The last few months I've been really upgrading my sartorial and fashion sense, and part and parcel to this has been looking for the right tailor. I have rather specific things I need done to most of my clothes (I have pretty broad shoulders, for example, but not that long of arms) and have been looking not just for a tailor who will alter my clothes, but for a collaborator--a tailor I can talk to and who will respect what I want. I went to another tailor on San Pablo Ave who was completely dogmatic and traditional in what he wanted; when I told him what I was looking for, he actually had the gall to tell me I didn't know what I was talking about because I hadn't been a tailor for 30 years and I didn't know a thing about suits!
My experience at Zoli's was the complete opposite. I was still looking for experience-based opinions--and Zoli had quite a few wonderful ones!--but I never once felt pressured into doing anything I didn't want. Zoli gave me good advice and good reasoning behind that advice, and the initial measuring was pleasant as all get-out. And he's just such a nice guy!
I was really happy with his work on shortening the sleeves of my rather expensive sport coat and hemming my two pairs of jeans. The $9 price for each of the jeans was wonderful, and I got a lot of bang for my buck because, notwithstanding my being a novice at this, I think we've all seen bad hem jobs before; Zoli's, however, was flawless. The sport coat was also splendidly done and is now probably my favorite thing to wear. I will definitely keep doing business here and am so glad to have finally found the right tailor for me.
Zoli and co. are moving down a couple of blocks to Addison Street, next to Scandinavian Designs, I believe next month. Oh, and Zoli is a new dad, so yay for him! -

Zoltan & Puja (I hope I spelled that right) are very good tailors. I have to remember to be very specific with my wants, but when I am, the results are fantastic. They will do *almost* anything and are very skilled. I clothes almost never have that "I've been altered" look. They are decent with turnaround times and will try to accommodate the customer's wishes.
Parking is weird around the Downtown Berkeley area they are in, but there is a bit of paid parking within a few blocks. I only bring in a couple pieces at a time, so I take advantage of the very close BART. -
Review from Lum P.
Emeryville, CA
I've had about 6 pants shortened and many garments dry cleaned here without a problem. One pair of pants required complex alteration that Uni Tailor couldn't figure out how to do even after I told them how. Uni Tailor (on University Ave) said shortening those pants while retaining the style of the original bottoms was "impossible". So I go to Advanced European Tailoring and Zoli (or Zoltan) says, "Nothing man-made is impossible to alter" and a week later my pants are altered just the way I wanted them. "Impossible" my ass. Service is excellent, rendered by patient, diligent, experienced tailors.
Caveats: Store hours are inconsistent with the hours posted on the side in the window. Lunchtime is quite popular for running errands, so there may be a 5-10 minute wait if you go at that time. But the wait is due to business volume, not employee sloth. -
Review from Julia C.
Oakland, CA
Advanced European Tailoring is so fantastic! I have had 3 pairs of jeans hemmed here in the past, and they were all done exactly how I wanted.
But what really sold me is when I walked in on a Tuesday at 6pm asking to have my bridesmaid dress taken out a little over an inch for a wedding that Saturday (I'm not usually this irresponsible). And to my astonishment, the dress was done by Thursday afternoon - and it looked (and fit) perfect - all for $44!! I've never had a bridesmaid dress altered before, but this seems like a bargain to me, especially with the quick turnaround.
This place is a life saver and they do really quality work; I would highly recommend for all tailoring needs. -

Found this place thanks to -- tada! -- Yelp! I had a shirt with a hole in the seam in the armpit & a pair of my fiance's shorts that had a tear in one of the back pockets, & a pair of jeans with a missing button.
The shorts were the toughie -- these were shorts bought in Taiwan, & unlike the standard patch-pocket (think jeans: a patch sewn on top of the leg with the top left open); it's sort of like a hole was cut out of the back, & then the pocket was sewed on on the inside... sort of difficult to describe. Anyway. The owner ended up patching it extremely well, so that it looks like the shorts were actually made to look the way they do!
When he wrote up my claim slip, I had some trouble reading his writing so I thought it was $13 for the shirt, $14 for the pants button, & $15 for the shorts (he had said they'd be most expensive). But no! $3 + $4 + $15 = $22 for everything -- & trust me, the pants were *well* worth it. -

I should have written this review years ago! I have brought well over half of my wardrobe in at some point to be altered (either hemmed, or taken in when I lost a bunch of weight, or changed up a bit... you know). I have NEVER been disappointed with the work they do here. More importantly, I am always VERY VERY HAPPY.
I'm moving now and I dread having to find a new tailor. Maybe I can just wait until when I visit to get stuff fixed or taken in? -

I, too, am one of those people who took way too long to get around to writing this review.
I also only recently discovered that getting things tailored makes you and your wardrobe look so much better...and it doesn't cost much at all. Zoltan is super friendly and very conscientious. I've given him several pairs of jeans to hem - he gives you the option of keeping the original hem (slightly more expensive) or not (about $8 I think). He's done a great job. Have also given him dress pants, a formal dress, and a jacket - all were fantastic. And when you are in the store, he devotes all his attention to you and your concerns. This place was a great find. Thanks to yelp and yelpers for leading me here!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Hands down - best tailor I've ever been to!
I'm a girl of the shorter variety, and have thus become accustomed to having my pants hemmed. In the past I've had some iffy results and so I had become pretty nervous about the whole hemming business.
Enter Zoltan. First off, Zoltan is one of the friendliest men you'll ever meet. Not in-your-face-fake friendly - think: courteous and professional friendly. He's also very meticulous (which I love!) - if you're just in to have your pants hemmed, he'll also look at how the pants fit you in the waist and seat and will tailor your clothing to fit you like a glove. I've had countless pairs of pants hemmed by him, and have recently started taking other garments in to have them tailored. He's done a beautiful job putting some darts in on a cocktail dress of mine, and he's taken in a few of my husbands dress shirts as well. I also had my wedding dress mended, dry-cleaned and boxed up by him, and he did a wonderful job.
