My 1997 Nissan Quest was leaking coolant somewhere in the engine compartment. I took it to another mechanic and I paid their diagnosis fee to have them check it out. They gave me a quote, it was a little high, but luckily I didnt have time that day to leave the minivan with them.
The next morning I went back and fortunately they didnt have time for me. I saw Advance Muffler and Auto on my way back home and decided, why not, let me see what they have to say about my car.
Well, JJ looked at it, and gave me a quote that was less than HALF the price I was quoted at the other place!
Before JJ did the work, he also warned me that there may be other hoses or gaskets that may need replacing if they broke while he was removing them (which is reasonable as my minivan has over 300k miles, and all original hoses and gaskets). He told me what it would cost IF anything else broke.
I gave him the go ahead and throughout his time working on it, he occasionally explained to me what the progress was.
Aside from the very awesome price, I REALLY appreciated him keeping me informed of the progress instead of leaving me wondering what was happening!! - btw, from when I got there to when I drove off, it was a total of about 5 hours. He didnt charge me 5 hours of labor, the total time for parts to be delivered was maybe an hour or so. Guess what? I wasnt charged 3 hours of labor either..!!
I HIGHLY recommend this place.. and ask for JJ. I found my new mechanic I can recommend to others!
As a side note, there was a couple who came in to have their check engine light looked at. JJ took about ten minutes and came back in the office to tell the couple that there was a wire that was disconnected that was causing the check engine light to come on (the husband had changed the starter a few months ago and knocked the wire loose). Some mechanics would have taken advantage of that situation and do unnecessary work! Not JJ. Honesty goes a long way! -

I found my regular auto shop.
I took my truck in after it was missing badly. After a quick lookover it turns out only my wires were bad. They didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need which scores hugh points in my book.
There is a Starbucks close by if you need to wait for your car. I will definatly be back. -

I came here after reading all the positive reviews and after having my car worked on there twice I'd not come back.
The first time was to have the power steering replaced. I live less then a mile from this place and I didn't even make it back to my house before the power steering went out. It was worse then when I took it to them. They told me they must have gotten a bad part. They took the car back and an hour later it was fixed. Two weeks later I took the car in toh ave the timing belt replaced. Which happened to be on a Friday.
With in two hours of having the timing belt replace I was broke down on the side of the road. They forgot to tighten a nut causing a belt to come off a pulley. Even I, as a woman who knows nothing about cars could see what the problem was. I have a great picture of it. In fact, the bolt was sitting in theb ottome of the engine compartment.
The shop told me that it again was the power steering pump and they would replace it. That the bolt that IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT JUST CAME OFF. and that NONE of the parts in question were removed for the timing belt. So for two weeks my car ran fine, then when I take it to them it blows up thew same day. Yet they expected me to believe it was a faulty part and not their work. I found that hard to believe but I did.
After doing much research on the internet searching for timing belt work on my model car. I also called the dealership r and asked if those parts would need to be moved for the timing belt, indeed they did. So either they did something odd with the timing belt OR lied to me about what parts they did have to move. Either way, I don't care. I wouldn't go back.
The shop is very busy, more then one employee said to me they felt rushed. The girl who rang me up stated she was frazzled and over worked. In short. Would not go back. -

I have nothing but kind words for the people here at Advance Muffler. I took my Honda in to get the catalytic converter replaced and Mario, one of the mechanics, guided me from start to finish. They first confirmed that the 'check engine' light code was indeed for the converter and, all in all, it took less than an hour for the installation (it wasn't too busy, so I might have been lucky time-wise). Mario and the owner of the shop never tried upselling me or gave me the b.s. run-around. They told me the facts and did what they could to save me a few $$. I highly recommend this place.

This place is very legit and does right by their customers. They will give you the facts on what can/can't/shouldn't, instead of just blindly making modifications for quick cash (like other muffler shops on the same street)
At first I didn't like hearing any resistance to my ideas, but now I appreciate it, and realize these guys are doing their job well. -

We found Advance Muffler & Auto Service through YELP last April when searching for a good place to have our Corvettes serviced. Several women had really good things to say about their treatment and what kind of service they received. We gave them a try and they are wonderful!!!. Mario works on all 3 Corvettes and they are very reasonably priced. We can't say enough good things about the people and service at Advance. We drive from the north east corner of San Fernando Valley to Pasadena because they are so good!

After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to take my car in to Advance for a leaky coolant issue. I called the shop on Tuesday and asked them if it would be more convenient to stop in on Friday morning or Saturday.
Mario told me that Friday would work for him, so I got there just as they opened. I am admittedly car-retarded, and have been screwed over by mechanics in the past. (Which is why I now ALWAYS do a Yelp search before I go to a new mechanic. It hasn't let me down yet. :))
Anyway, Mario said that he would diagnose the car while I waited. It could take anywhere up to 90 minutes. I asked him if he could let me know sooner rather than later since I had to go to work. While he looked under the hood, I filled out the paperwork and then spent my time in the Starbucks a couple of blocks away.
Twenty-five minutes later I got a call from him that everything was done. I had a loose hose. He tightened it and showed me where the leak was coming from. He also added extra fluid to my washer container when he noticed that my check fluid light was on.
I also have a missing hubcap on my car. I asked him for his advice on where I could get a new one and he was very helpful by removing an existing hubcap, reading me the numbers and telling me where I could find one for cheap.
Mario was super nice and didn't even charge a dime for his services. I will definitely go back next time there is an issue with the car. Thanks Advance! -
Review from Dave L.
Kirk, what can I say about him at Advance Muffler and Auto Service?
How does Professional, Honest, Above and Beyond, and most importantly QUALITY sound to you? Why does it matter? Well, it is because these words describes exactly who Kirk is and his work and knowledge translates to the utmost professional quality !
In addition to his quality work, he is also just as willing to share his experiences in dealing with other automotive issues. In my case, a recent automotive collision.
As with anyone on http://Yelp.com, I searched for several days, looking for a reputable auto service. More specifically, I was looking for a place where the mechanics possess the expert knowledge needed to identify what was wrong with my Mustang GT, willing to take the time to explain to me why it was faulty, be willing to suggest a solution or an alternative to the solution, provide me with a straight answer as to the cost and the kind of work that was necessary for the repair and finally, a place that was not going to rip me off for every penny that I got. After searching and calling more than a dozen places, I came to Advance Muffler and Auto Service.
Upon arriving at Advance Muffler and Auto Service at 10:30AM, I approached an individual, I believe his name was Derek and provided him with a brief synopsis of what I was having trouble with. Immediately, he pointed me to Kirk and without any hesitation, Kirk lifted my Mustang and begin examining it. Within the first three minutes, Kirk was able to provide me with an explanation as to why my mustang was rattling and what it took to fix it. Not only did he explained it to me, I was given the chance to see the damages. For areas where the damage could not be visually identified, he was able to let me feel for it. Because of this, I know for a fact that Kirk wasn't trying to take advantage of me or sell me something I don't need. Can I say, AWESOME!!!!!!!
Initially, my problem could have been resolved with a simple adjustment to my exhaust system and Kirk could have easily did just that. Instead, he had noticed that my previous mechanic had done a terrible job installing the MagnaFlow Exhaust system on my Mustang and without any hesitation he opted to correct the mistakes for me. He completely dismantled my exhaust system and made the proper adjustments and repairs to ensure that everything was set completely right and exactly to the measures. In addition to that, he undid some of the mistakes that my previous mechanic had made and made sure that both of my exhausts were leveled and equally displaced. The whole process took approximately 2hours.
Given that I was serviced immediately on arrival (I did not call to make an appointment), how Kirk went the extra mile to fix the mistakes that my other mechanics had done, adjusted my mustang so that the rattling cease to exist and charging me only $100 dollars for all the work that he had done was simply beyond belief. He is truly one of the best out there.
I recommend Advance Muffler and Auto Service to anyone out there. This experience is by far the best that I have ever encountered. In fact, I plan on going back to Advance Muffler and Auto Service to replace my shocks.
Trust me when I say this, you will not be disappointed. I have absolute and complete faith in Kirk and his work! -

Advance Muffler & Auto Service is...
- Honest
- Competent
- Ethical
It is rare these days to find this particular combination in any auto repair shop type environment - a known bastion of incompetent retards posing as mechanics, outright scammers and blatant rip off artists.
My first visit today to Advance had me leaving with an accurate, no charge diagnosis of what it wasn't (the catalytic converters) and ended up with me tooling just down the road to Midas to find out what it was (they had no clue). Midas, in turn, shamelessly tried to rip me off for over 1800.00 in unnecessary and unneeded repairs....(see my other review on these creeps)
A few hours later back it was back to Advance again with a wallet that was now $85 lighter due to the fake "diagnosis" by Midas. I came seeking a recommendation to a repair shop that could actually accurately diagnose and repair my vehicle so I could make it back to San Diego.
After patiently listening to my tale of auto-woe and attempted highway robbery, the guys at Advance sent me to All Car Specialties in San Gabriel where, low and behold, they actually diagnosed the problem (bad fuel pump) and fixed it.
Thanks Advance for keeping things in the auto repair biz honest and reputable. Your stellar reviews say it all, keep up the great work!! -

Randy and company were an extreme pleasure to deal with and were both professional and friendly and I would recommend Advance Muffler & Auto Service to anyone who lives in the area or who happens to break down in the area like I did and expect an honest, fair, and friendly experience which is a rarity in the auto mechanic world. Now if you want to read the details of my experience, read on...
I live in the San Fernando Valley and was out in Altadena/Pasadena area on a hike with some friends and upon leaving the hike, my car broke down, just wouldn't start.
I left the car in the area and my friend who lives in the area recommended I take it to Advance due to his past experience with them. He said that they put a new belt on his car and that was all he needed to fix his problem and didn't even charge him for it so I was definitely interested in taking my car to Advance after I heard about that experience.
I called ahead to let them know I was interested in bringing my car to the shop and this was on Dec 31st. They told me that they were trying to close shop early, at about noon, to give the guys time off for New Year's Eve so I had my car towed there at around 10:30am. They greeted me and were expecting me which was nice and that's when I met one of the mechanics, Randy, who was awesome.
Randy immediately took to my car to diagnose the issue after he listened to what I had to say about the symptoms. Within a few minutes, he had checked to see if the spark plugs were getting juice and after seeing that they weren't, went on to the Distributor. He took the cap off and tested a few of the leads and found that the problem was that the Distributor went bad and showed me exactly how it worked and how there were no pulses of energy going from it to the plugs when the other mechanic tried starting the car.
He got on the phone, called to one place to get a quote on a rebuilt one (which he asked me if I wanted instead of a new one) and once he heard the price of the first place, he told me he could probably do better and found one for about $40 cheaper at another place. So he told me the price of the part, gave me the price of one hour of labor and sent me on my way because the part wouldn't have come in by the time they closed at noon. I was perfectly fine with coming back after the New Year and really appreciated Randy showing me exactly how he diagnosed the problem.
After the new rebuilt distributor was installed, the car started up perfectly. Thank you Randy! -

I am just going to have to parrot everything that everyone has said about this place already. The guys here are super friendly and really talk to you like a normal person. No sales pressure or big words that fly over your head (especially for ladies!).
I took my car in, because it was leaking oil. I called ahead to see what time would work out and was told to simply come in in the morning. So I drive up, and they recognize me and my car from the conversation I had with them the day before. He pulled my car right into the shop and started working.
These guys checked out the "service engine" light for free and turned it off FOR FREE. They also told me that the leak most likely came from a misinstallation of the filter from the last place I went. They performed a standard oil change, charged me like 35 bucks, and sent me on my way in less than two hours! LASTLY, they told me to come back in three days so that they could verify their work. This they also did for FREE!
This place truly cares for their customers. Go there and you will not be disappointed. Even if you are a car dunce, it will totally be fine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! -

I inherited a 1999 Volvo from my mom that had not been driven for 1 year. I had to drive it home to San Diego over the weekend and I was feeling nervous about its condition. I called Kirk on Saturday morning and asked if I could bring in for him to look at even though I didn't have an appointment. He kindly agreed and made time for me. I brought it in and he checked everything - the brakes, fluids, tires (added air), hoses, mounts, etc. He did a thorough inspection and spent the time to educate me on some of the different engine parts (I know nothing about cars). He then made a few recommendations on what I could have looked at in San Diego. He spent a long time with me and did an extremely thorough job. He gave me the OK to drive it home to San Diego and told me that it would be fine. After all that, he didn't charge me. I was blown away! He could have charged me $100 and I wouldn't have known the difference. He was super kind, generous, patient and thorough. The peace of mind he gave me was priceless. If I lived in Pasadena, I would bring my car here.

Okay, this is a review of an establishment that I have never patronized. HOWEVER....I took my car in for repairs at another local shop this week and then had second thoughts AFTER the fact. I figured I should not have just taken the word of the first place I took it to...no matter how kindly they treated me. Anyway, I called Advance Muffler & Auto Service (after seeing their outstanding Yelp reviews) with a few questions. I was transferred to Kirk, who actually took the time to EXPLAIN to me different scenarios, pricing and repair methods. He gave me the sense that the price that I paid at the "other" shop was not an EXCEPTIONAL deal...but that it was fair. I could tell by speaking with Kirk that he KNEW EXACTLY what he was talking about and that he is highly experienced and passionate about his work. He put me SO at ease over the phone ~ as he welcomed (and answered) all of my questions ~ that I am planning to take my car to their shop for any mechanical work I need done on my car.
Thank you, Kirk for being an expert at "Customer Service"...even for people who are not yet your customers.

Very down-to-earth and honest people (not to mention one of the mechanics is pretty easy on the eyes). I was helped within minutes of stepping out of my car. The mechanics and owner are genuine in their assessments & seem to keep to their estimates of costs, time, etc.
I used to take my vehicle to big-name dealerships to get service done, but no more. Advance is my new auto repair home. -

Yelp users are right again!!
My stupid "check engine" light came on and I got scared. So scared I almost went to Aamco. Luckily I logged on and found this little gem of a place. It's not much to look at and you might pass it if you're not careful, but it's the best place to take your car.
When I read the reviews I thought, "no way can the place be that good"...I was right. It's BETTER! They were nice, used words I could understand and did not try to sell me a service I didn't need. In fact, the problem was a dirty sensor and he cleaned it and reset the light for free! I was just about to be on my way when I asked him to do my tune up. It took less than an hour and I drove away happy. This is definitely my new mechanic.
A+ all around! -

Car repair can be a daunting task for a lady, but this place made it a piece of cake. After getting a quote at the dealer, I contacted Advance Muffler at the recommendation of a friend. Not only was the service much less expensive, the repairman took the time to explain what the problem was, how he repaired it, and what to do in the future...all without making me feel like a moron.
I highly recommend this place if you need repair work done. The only reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is the waiting room. It's a little...dingy. Instead of waiting there, I actually walked down to Starbucks. -

Any one who owns a vehicle in the area should definitely consider Advance Muffler & Auto Service. Prior to choosing this repair shop, I had been ripped off and treated with horrendous costumer service by someone a friend referred, so I was weary on choosing a shop again. I went to the internet for an opinion and the yelp reviews for Advance Muffler & Auto Service prevailed with flying colors!
Being a young lady, I always get charged up the bum for ridiculous fees but I can speak nothing besides phenomenal words about how cost friendly this auto service shop is. A mere $90 saved my vehicle from a horrible downwards spiral of repairs and fees due to my 1999 Honda Civic having a bit of bad luck and possibly an attitude problem. Someone recently tried to steal my rims so the front axle was quite wonky providing a horrendous metal on metal grinding noise. Not only did they fix this, but they also solved my check engine light mystery.
Not trusting the specific diagnosis of the previous ill-fit mechanics, Kirk and Mario took me under their wing and saved me hundreds of dollars by knowledgeable craftsmanship and a thorough inspection of the evap system. I am shocked they offered above and beyond customer service, a speedy quick operation, and employs hard workers all in a price I can afford. I will definitely be taking future vehicles to Advance Muffler & Auto Service!

Dear Advance Muffler,
You get a smiley face on your report card...
A+ For all your dedicated work and friendly service, even on a hot summer day!
A+ For your customer care and satisfaction! Who cares if you have a small TV. You gave me water and AC on a hot humid day and that's all I needed.
A+ For being negotiable and giving me the price I asked for. Midas gets and F- for this category.
A+ For being quick and for double-checking my exact needs before going to work on the car.
A+ For being reputable and experienced since 1947.
Note: Advance pays great attention to your needs and can refer you to other reputable specialists around the area as well. That Midas whatever can "SEE ME AFTER CLASS" blacklisted in detention. -

Went here for an oil change when I found out my regular mechanic had closed down his shop. Because my car's a Corolla and pretty standard when it comes to oil changes, I honestly did not expect it to take longer than 20 minutes.
I get there, drop off my keys, and I wait. The owner comes by to tell me to change the air filter, which I agree to, and he goes back out to work on the car and call a parts place for the filter. Half an hour goes by, and no updates. After fifteen minutes (this is 45 minutes in total, just for the sake of reference), I stand outside and look at my car and no one is doing anything with it.
I guess the owner saw me looking at it because he then started putting oil into my car and telling me it was only going to be a bit longer.
In the end, it took about an hour to get an oil change and air filter changed out of my car and it cost $90, which seems absurdly ridiculous ($30 for the oil change, $20 for the filter and $40 for labor, according to the owner). He also neglected to tell me until the end that the parts shop was late in getting the air filter to me, which I wish he would have told me sooner so I could just forgo it this time around and leave after the oil change was done. He also wrote my name down as "Karl"... which is not my name.
The owner was nice, and I went here primarily based on the 5 star ratings from Yelp but I would definitely not come here again for something like an oil change. -

I was referred by my mechanic brother. I walked onto the lot and told them that my muffler basically came off the piping cause of the previous crappy weld job done by some other dudes.. They were willing to weld it back on for 20 bucks. But they also had a spare used muffler for the same vehicle. They were willing to give me the used muffler and install it for 75 bucks. I already spent a couple of days looking for that same exact part with no luck and these guys had it! It would've also been a lot more if I got the part elsewhere. Based on my experience, these guys seem to be pretty legit. The work they did might've been done for a lot more at other places.
I heard from my mechanic bro that this place has been around for a while and they've got a good reputation. The staff seems knowledgeable. -

My daughter's '90 Accord started sounding like there was an old lawnmower underneath. Called Advance and they said bring it in and they'd look at it. No charge. Seeing how they had such positive reviews here, I figured it had to beat Midas.
I took it in and they put it on the lift. They told me what the problem was and explained my options to repair. They were pretty straightforward and took the time to answer my questions. Based on what they told me, I chose to replace the resonator only. The work was performed within the time promised and the car sounds like a Honda again. BTW, this Accord runs great! -

Forget Midas, come here. You will be glad you did. If you need exhaust system work in the 626 area, this is THE place to come.
My family has been coming to Advanced since 1969 and each time we are treated with respect, and great customer service. They explain what the problem is, and tell us what it takes to fix it.
Twice they could have sold us new mufflers (or more), but instead showed us a broken bracket and replaced it - the last time for less than $20.
When my friend's Suburban needed a whole new exhaust system (the factory one was totally rotted out after 15 years) Wayne volunteered that he could get my friend a big boost in mileage. So instead of replacement factory manifolds, stock pipes, stock mufflers and stock catalytics he got headers, 3" diameter pipes, matching mufflers and catalytics. And an honest 5 mpg boost.

These guys are awesome! I took a late model BMW there that had a bad resonator. They diagnosed it and fixed it right away. The price was very reasonable as well (almost 20% lower than the next best.)
I was told it's been a family run business for 50+ years. Kirk (the owner) seems like he has a PhD in exhausts. He carefully looked over my car and gave a full exhaust diagnosis. He even said that I didn't really even need to fix it. Now that's honesty!
I'm surprised that there weren't more people there on that Saturday. (It's probably better for me since I won't have to wait, but I wanted to make sure that these guys do well since they're honest and do a great job. -

This place deserves the highest rating possible. I was purchasing a used car in the area and am not from Pasadena. The staff here was better than I could have imagined. I took the car for an inspection before my purchase and the gentleman I worked with took a full hour to look over the entire car for me, teaching me a lot along the way. I would bring my car here anytime. Very trustworthy in a world where it's hard to find a high quality mechanic. Highly highly recommended!

Did excellent and affordable installation of a new muffler which they made up specially for my old MGB sports car. It runs well, sounds great, and wasn't expensive. Later when I had a small scraping issue (it scraped on my highly crowned driveway--not their fault, my driveway's fault), they put it up on the lift and looked it over to see if there was any more adjustment possible (there wasn't) and charged me nothing for that. Nice people, good service, no hassle, fair prices. Who'd get a muffler at a chain store when you get better quality here at fair prices?

oh my gwadd love this place!
my car died on me twice this weekend. first was the battery, then i had no idea what was wrong with it again but my car just wouldn't start. i live pretty close by this place and Evan was nice enough to come jump start my car so i can take the car to the shop. After about an hour or so, they knew exactly what was wrong with my car and everything was perrrrfecto within 3 hours! (pep boys on colorado took 3-4 hours just to replace a freakin battery. don't ever go there to fix your car) and the price is legit too.

Came here for an oil change after reading all the reviews. I called around 3:30pm when the shop closes at 5pm. The guy told me to head down to the shop anyway and they would take care of me. When I got there around 3:45pm, all the racks were full with cars. So I walked into the office, gave him my information, and signed some waiver. Then I started playing poker on my phone (thinking that it was going to be a while). Before I finished my 5th hand, the guy told me that it was done. So I gave him my credit card, signed all the paperwork, and went to pick up my car. I looked at the clock and it was 4:11pm. Are you kidding me? I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes without having to hear a pitch on fuel injection cleaning or microfiber cabin air bacteria elimination service. This is how easy and painless getting your car maintenance should be. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I haven't tried their other services but i'm sure i will.
