With the possible exception of taking lessons, Gene Bonk  &  Keith McGuire
( ADS Golf)  have done more to improve  my game than any single thing that I have attempted to do.
Having just picked up a newer set of irons, I thought it would be a good idea to have a professional, club fitter simply confirm that they were properly set up for me.  As I started my search I came across this link:  http://golfsmithsales....
To be exact: 4 time GCA California Club Maker of the Year, 3 Time World Top 10 Club Maker of Year.  And he is currently TEACHING at the Golf Academy. (He didn't happen to mention any these accomplishments. I counted the plaques on the wall).
What Gene does quite simply, is listen (what a concept!) to what you believe you would like to accomplish to improve your game and after going through a very through fitting process, offer (not sell) you a variety of possibilities for improvement. You can do as much or as little as you want.  There is no pressure. His cost are VERY reasonable and he is very generous with his time.  Gene & Keith are well connected to both the large and small companies  in the golf industry. And they are aware and have access to the newest golf components and products.
After trying a variety of head and shaft combinations, - including my own, I was able to feel the difference between what I had been using and what I could be using. (Specifically, as a result of putting different amount of weight either in the head or the grip, I had a better "sense" of the club head.)
Based on where the ball was consistently striking the club face (inside),  Gene made the following recommendation:  (that I agreed to)

    (1) Reduce length by  1/2".
    (2) Weight each club so that they would have the same feeling. (D4)
    (3) Spine each shaft.
    http://www.golf-fanati...  (Flat Line Oscillation (FLO)
    (4) Adjust for optimum Moment of Inertia (MOI) http://golf.about.com/...,
    (5) Check loft & lie.

    Bottom Line:
Before:    Almost very shot had a nasty little fade to it.
     After:   Going, going gone.

In my particular case, spining a shaft made a direct and recognizable difference.  (This kind of specialized treatment is standard for the pros. ) No one with their head "screwed on right" believes that you can "buy" a good golf game.  What I was able to accomplish is to ensure that my "implements" were fined tuned, - allowing me to get the very best out of them. This Don Quixote's quest for the perfect club is over. They are in my bag.
