Hubby and I went to see Lydia at the Adrienne and the show was phenomenal! We look forward to catching more plays here in the future.

I attended a showing of the play Bachelorette with a couple friends last night. Before then, I had never heard of the Adrienne Theater, and I was surprised when we arrived to a multi-purpose building that seemed to have a lot of different theater spaces within. Bachelorette was in the Sky Box, all the way up the staircase.

The stage was small but the set was cool, and every seat in the small theater was filled. Even from my position in the last row on the end, I could still see and hear everything just fine. I'd definitely attend a show there again.

The following are excerpted from the play I am writing about seeing the final performance of "The Threshing Floor" at the Adrienne Theater's Second Stage.

    ***

    ACT I, Scene I

(INT. APARTMENT. MAN sits in chair, lazily sipping coffee as he browses the internets on his Macbook.  After a moment, he pauses and digs his cellphone out of his pocket, then dials a number.)

    MAN
Hey, how's it going? There's this James Baldwin play going on at the theater near my apartment that ends its run this week.  He's one of those Harlem Renaissance dudes, right?  Wanna go?

    ***

    ACT II, Scene III

(INT. APARTMENT.  MAN and WOMAN sit on couch, drinking white wine.)

    MAN
(reading Wikipedia half an hour before the show)
Hey, you know James Baldwin was gay?

    WOMAN
    (prolonged, stunned silence)
He wrote arguably his most famous book about it.  Are you sure you want to see this?

    ***

    ACT III, Scene VI

(INT. THEATER. WOMAN stares at ACTOR on stage in rapt, adoring silence.  You can occasionally hear the not-entirely-muffled sounds of the dancers practicing on the floor above.)

    ***

    EPILOGUE

(EXT. STREET.  It is now nighttime.  Other attendees slowly filter out of the theater, walking behind MAN and WOMAN.)

    MAN
    So, you liked it?

    WOMAN
Yeah.  It was amazing.  The venue was so intimate, there were probably only, what, twenty, twenty-five people you can fit in there?

    MAN
Yeah.  I felt such an amazing connection to the actor in that space, like, here's this thing on its face about the black experience in America, the gay experience, too and I'm sitting there, like, this isn't relevant to my life experience but feeling this, I don't know, I don't get it but I get it, a little... yeah.  No, it was amazing.

    (EXUENT, pursued by a bear.)

The Adrienne is a cool little theater spot in one of my favorite streets (check out Long In The Tooth, The Roxy, and Fat Jacks if you haven't yet!). I went here to catch one of my friends perform in a play for The Fringe Festival a couple years back. Since I showed up fashionably late, and ended up randomly walking through a couple doors before finding the right theater, I was able to find out some cool things about it.

For one thing The Adrienne has a good small room for classes, and acting practices. I discovered while walking into a improv training session unannounced. The people doing it were talented enough to work around my sudden intrusion at least. Bravo!

When I finally found the theater I was looking for a I realized how nice and cozy it was. all of the seats were comfortable and they gave you a good view of the stage no matter where you sat.

Because it deals with so many independent productions and theater troupes you always end up with a plenty of different and obscure showings. The play my friend in was a bunch of obscure shorts that really entertained the crowd. I'll especially give a nod to the short that had my friend discovering the most serene and enlightening image ever just by placing a napkin on his face.

It's a good place to either catch something entertaining, or something that's straight out of the theater scene from The Big Lebowski.

Last evening...(after the Steve's fiasco...see previous review) I was lucky enough to be introduced to this cute little theater across the street from the Roxy.  While it doesn't look quite welcoming outside...and to be honest...the interior of the lobby reminds me of the lobby at my intermediate school's aquatic center (just a little creepy), I think this place is a true diamond in the rough!
I saw an improv show based on real relationship and situations...though the air conditioners were a bit noisy...I'm going to say it was well worth my eight bucks!  Small and intimate the way improv should be...I suggest you check out some of their line-ups for the summer season..I'm bound to go back!

There are a bunch of studios and three stages in this complex.  I've seen performances in all three spaces.

The mainstage is quaint and cozy.  We saw an excellent production by Gas & Electric Arts here.

The second stage seems to get warm and stuffy, even if the audience is small. The sound was fine, seats were comfortable.

The playground is interesting.  Only saw one performance here, so I'm not sure if the seating is always the same or if they use it differently for each production.

I've seen a bunch of productions, and each was by a different theater troupe, so I can't review them here.  But as a venue, the Adrienne is as good as any.  They seem to support new and local artists, which means not all performances will be good.  But everyone needs a place to learn and grow, and the Adrienne might be the place to do it in Philly.

Great venue! I came with some of my improv classmates to see our instructor's "Tongue and Groove" show, and it was the perfect space for it.  Not only that, there is a separate theater, the Playground, where ComedySportz (another show I am obliged to see for my improv class) performs on Saturday nights.  Will be back to report about the Playground once I see ComedySportz!
